Opinions de The Little Brown Jug Chiddingstone Causeway
We were here while waiting for our son's mock test to finish and it turned out to be a lovely surprise. The Little Brown Jug has a massive garden - booths, benches, regular tables, even a playground - perfect for families or anyone wanting a bit of space. Inside has that true pub feeling: warm, rustic, with wooden beams and vintage charm everywhere you look. The staff were really attentive and friendly from the moment we walked in. We had breakfast and coffee - both were absolutely delicious. The presentation was spot on (yes, the food looked just as good as it tasted), and the coffee was exactly what we needed. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re in the area - relaxed atmosphere, great service, and excellent food.
Coming from Central London to travel here for a nice dinner and drinks. It's directly in front of Penshurst Station which was super convenient. Staff was super friendly and customer service was top notch and the vibes was over all cosy and welcoming. Food away amazing too! Definitely would recommend and I'd love to come back again soon!
Really delicious food and efficient and friendly service. Very spacious pub with a nice atmosphere. Plenty of outdoor space too for when the weather is nice!
Dropped in on Sunday for a late lunch. Obviously busy but we were lucky to get a table for 2 and we were made to feel very welcome by the lady who seemed to be managing the restaurant that day. We ordered 2 roast chicken dinners, a small wine and a pint. £59 including service. I’m glad the service gets added on. We are generous anyway but nice to know nobody is getting away with being mean. Oli who served us was great. Very pleasant. Oli and the lady both asked if all was well with our meals. The portions were plentiful! Massive Yorkshire, delish red cabbage, I think a swede/carrot mash, cauliflower cheese which we have to pay extra for in our local. So 4 veg! Bit of salad too which doesn’t seem necessary. Really nice chicken breast rather than a cheap half chicken places serve. Stuffing, pig in blanket. If that doesn’t fill you up you over eat 😂. 3 potatoes, my husband had to finish one of mine. Too full for desert. Really lovely place. A big family meal going on, seems ideal for that. A big garden. We got a space in the car park. Wish I could remember the lady’s name, she was really friendly and professional, as was Oli. Other people visiting were a nice crowd, well behaved kids etc. which you can guarantee but made for a really lovely visit after a walk at Chiddingstone
I had a warm welcome when I arrived and my daughter loved playing in the play area. The staff were very accommodating. The meal was very generous on the portion size and also tasty. It was a lovely atmosphere.
Did a circular walk from Bore place and the Little Brown Jug was about half way along, so stopped in for drinks and some food. We sat in the covered patio for the shade as it was a warm day. Service was good, food great. Plenty of choice on the menu. Dog friendly in bar and outside areas. Will come again. Just check the bill as service was included, but that was pointed out to us by the waitron when we tried to add more on to the card machine. All good.
What a find. Lovely pub, is actually massive inside and a huge garden and patio area. We ate here for lunch, partner had a burrito and I had a fish finger sandwich. Great menu, food was really good and such generous portions for the price. Staff dead friendly. Will definitely go back
Sunday lunch for 19 on a busy lunch time. The staff worked seamlessly to deliver. Hats off. Loved it 😁
We ate in a private booth outside and the service and food was outstanding. Couldn't fault anything. Great job.
We went for a family roast. We sat outside and the garden area was very cozy. The food was really tasty and staff very friendly. There is a play area for smaller children including swings, seesaw, slide and zip line. There are also pods outside which can be hired for a more private feel if you wish. There is parking or it is directly opposite Penshurst train station 😀
Very nice pub, looking forward to try the food in the new year.
Had a lovely meal with friends after visit to Hever Castle. Nice and spacious, accommodating and welcoming. Food was lovely, nicely presented and well priced. I had a lovely piece of fish with homemade chips
Portion was huge, and the staff were friendly. Better book a table, though the waitress might make you wait even with many empty tables
Went for dinner tonight as I'm staying at the Hever Castle B&B and the restaurants recommended we're busy. I'm so glad I did because this place might have been the best food I've ever eaten! I had the tomato and roasted red pepper soup with roasted brown bread - hands down the tastiest thing I've ever put in my mouth! Also had the mac'n'cheese with bacon and it was rich and delicious as well! As a bariatric patient, I can only eat 2-3oz of food at a meal so I feel bad leaving most of my food on my plate but they didn't make me feel bad about it once! Very friendly staff, beautiful building and decor. If I ever find myself back in this area, all of my meals will be here! Also want to note, before I placed my order, I was asked if there were any dietary restrictions or allergies they should work with - I don't have any (aside from a small stomach pouch 😅) but hearing it asked made me happy for those that do need to worry about it!
My partner and I visited this pub whilst we stayed at a local air bnb. We called ahead for a recommendation for a cab and Molly provided us with two options. The pub was lovely and quiet for the time and day we chose, Joel kindly offered us the corner table next to the fire which he lit for us as well. The interior was beautifully decorated and the outside looks amazing for warmer weather! Even still it looked as though they offered hot water bottles for outside. The service was relaxed and casual from the waitress Molly which was nice to not be fussed for that evening to have some privacy. The music was not suiting the vibe of the cosy interior, so we only asked Joel to turn it down just a touch- which he did happily but as well as that he changed the playlist to more jazz like music which was a lovely surprise! Molly did later changed it back to a more upbeat playlist not realising why Joel had changed it haha but it was slow mamma mia that time so it wasnt as bad. The food was absolutely amazing- the best Mac and cheese I have ever had at a restaurant before and Im a big lover of Mac! My partner only wishes his sausages to have been cooked a bit more. Otherwise we had an absolutely amazing evening for my 25th so thankyou! We would absolutely be regulars if we were not a 2 hour drive away!
Brought the family to the Little Brown Jug to celebrate the mrs birthday and what a treat it was. The outside huts are well worth the money, being heated inside we took our time to enjoy our meal in privacy whilst the little ones played in the garden swings and slide. Service was amazing, the gentleman serving us was exceptional and catered to our every need, nothing was too much. Thanks for making our experience the best it could be, we highly recommend to others and we will certainly be back. Kind regards
Lovely little country pub great views. Good for kids as a good play area. Marquee set up outside plus plenty of outdoor seating. Excellent choice of quality locally sourced food. Inside is just as nice everything finished to a high standard.
What an fantastic meal! Vegan fish and chips which had an incredible texture and flavorful and the vegan burger was delicious too! We also had the jackfruit spring rolls for starts, which comes with a hoisin/peanut butter dipping sauce, perfection! Friendly staff and lovely atmosphere. Would highly recommend!
Excellent food, service was brilliant, fantastic place for children. Play area and had Halloween events on. Highly recommend and will be returning.
I came here for my mum and nan’s birthday and we had a great time! We had a lovely birthday plate with a brownie and a candle for my mum and nan, which had ‘happy birthday’ written in chocolate sauce, which made it special for them. The pub itself is a lovely traditional country pub, which is easily accessible from Penshurst station, which is across the road. I’d highly recommend a visit and the fish and chips!
This is a lovely chill pub with good homemade food! It has plenty of outdoor seating and it is dog friendly!😍
Loved this pub, great beer garden with good play area for kids. Excellent veggie & vegan options, 8 in total! If they did a nice local cider it would be even better!
Great pub, first visit, nice friendly staff. Will be returning in the summer for the alfresco drinks 🍸
Great place, great service, good staff, and directly opposite. Lovely sitout area too. Penshurst railway station which is quite helpful. There is free parking for about 30 vehicles. Highly recommend this place for anyone who wants to chill out, eat, drink well and take the train home 😀
A lovely historic pub . Very welcoming.Great food and good value. Nice relaxed cosy atmosphere.
Beautiful pub not far from Tunbridge Wells. We visited here with some friends and the most brilliant thing was that the children played in the play area for ages meaning we had a proper catch up! Delicious food, attentive staff, cracking local ales and they've got some great events coming up too (Oktoberfest!!) I'll definitely be back and will be recommending this gem far and wide.
Nice pun right outside the station. It’s a green king so the quality of food and the beer selection is good as usual. Staff very friendly
Popped in without a booking. Staff were amazing. Great service, food was superb and very reasonably priced considering the quality. Would definitely go again.
I loved the atmosphere we visted on tuesday 21 October 2025 with my sister her finace me and my fiance and even the dog i would recommend visiting the pub will be drinking there again even the staff were lovely first class service thank you 100% service x
Food was alright. Friendly, quick service. Prices were okay. Would return. Part of a very nice walk where you could also visit a pub in Chiddingstone, and one in Penshurt with 45 mins between each one. Has Greene King on the sign outside but appears to be a much smaller, local pub chain. Maybe they took it over and didn't change the sign yet?
The Little Brown Jug was recommended by friends and we were not disappointed. Fabulous food, excellent service from the young team and lovely atmosphere. For warmer days there are beautiful grounds and private pods for hire. Definitely 5 star.
A delightful and cosy place to go for a date or just to have a meal with family and friends. Service is top notch and the food is amazing. Might be on the expensive end for some but it's absolutely worth every penny. 2025 Update Had a lovely meal at The Little Brown Jug today with the family. We enjoyed starters, mains, and desserts - everything was well prepared and served promptly. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our visit. Being a weekday, it wasn't too busy which made for a relaxed atmosphere. Plenty of parking available, which is always a bonus. The prices were very reasonable for the quality of food we received. There was a small mix-up with our bill regarding the burger pricing (we thought they were half price as advertised at the bar), but the staff sorted it out quickly and professionally without any fuss. Overall, a really good experience and we'll definitely be back. Would recommend for a family meal out.
The Little Brown Jug is in a lovely location. There is a reasonable amount of parking on site with disabled parking available very close to the entrance. The garden area is expansive with plenty of room for children to stretch their legs. A patio area is available close to the side of the building. If you are looking for something special, look no further than the romantic Tiki Huts available at an extra cost. Now for the nitty-gritty, the food. We've eaten here before many times over the years and had very good experiences. However, today was not the best. The starters were very good, the chicken parfait with bloomer bread and salad, absolutely delicious. To be honest, that would have been sufficient as a main for me and I would have gone home happy. My husband had the crispy duck spring roll, which he was also happy with. The mains were a let down, the sirloin steak was flavoursome but chewy, and the chunky chips had seen better days. My husband's gourmet burger was more thyme than beef and he found it inedible. However, this is not our usual experience here. The waitress noticed my husband's struggles and reported it to management, not our intention, but greatly appreciated. The owner dealt with the situation in the very best way possible. The staff members and management here are absolutely brilliant. You feel valued as soon as you enter the building, and nothing is too much trouble. It really matters to them that you have a great time and therefore will make return visits. It's a beautiful building inside, decorated with lots of nostalgic pictures and nooks and crannies. The tables are spaced to allow for romantic couple meals or big family celebrations etc., along with candles to add to the ambience. All in all a great venue, and we will definitely be back.
This used to be our favourite pub in Kent. The food / Roast is not as good as before and the price has gone up, too. Portion is big and plenty of vegetables. Vegetables are bit too soft. Friendly staff and good service. Toilet is clean. Free parking available. You can go across the train station opposite and have a walk in the field. There is also a play park in the pub and kids had fun playing there.
Lovely pub. In the beautiful Kent countryside. Visited here whilst on a bike ride. Staff were amazing friendly people who even called me sir when I was dressed in Lycra. Madness. The food is great but don’t eat too much as all the routes back to London involve big hills to cycle over. Which will make that journey rather bloated.
I had a tasty bangers and mash with a side of seasonal veg (mashed swede, cauliflower cheese, purple cabbage, sliced courgette and greens). It was a lovely sunny day with a great play area for kids, including a zip wire which adults seemed to use more! There’s a large outdoor sitting area including huts. I enjoyed my experience and will go back to try other items on the gastro pub menu.
A family favourite for birthday meals. A lovely looking place serving tasty food. On this occasion the pub wasn't very busy which meant we could park close to the entrance which was helpful for an infirm relative.
Our server was Jack, lovely guy very helpful. Food was great as always,
A great country pub, great atmosphere really nice inside with an amazing beer garden. Food was very good, really good quality and great portion sizes (everyone was stuffed), the prices were okay for the quality and size of the portions. The staff were brilliant the girl that served us was very tentative, checking to make sure everything with the food and drinks were okay. The only negative and why it isn’t 5 stars was the time it took to get our meals was exceptionally long (about 90mins from ordering) they were incredibly busy so its understandable, but it was a long wait. However overall a great place to go, will happily go back again.
The food and service were good considering how busy it was, but two of the desserts never arrived despite three requests, which tended to spoil the end result. So a poor review sadly.
Lovely spot, huge capacity: service suffers as a result. Food can vary from decent to poor and drinks and food are quite overpriced but will keep supporting local pubs like this. Would use more if it were better value!
A mixed review here, I liked the ambience, sitting in the garden on a sunny evening, and was much taken with the variety of photos, picture cards, and news items on display inside. The food ordered was of reasonable quality, but we were stunned when the bottle of wine ordered cost £34 , a glass apparently was £12. I admit we didn't check the price beforehand, but the bill took the gloss off the occasion. So ,if you are passing by pop in, but be cautious with what you order.
Great garden for a meal with children and the service felt attentive. The fish and chips were really good but the roast was a mixed bag- the porc and Yorkshire pudding were dry but the porc belly pièce and veg sides were nice.
I hate to leave a bad review but we had a very poor experience overall yesterday. We arrived at quater to 2 and it was not overly busy. Staff were attentive when we first came in and we were immediately sat down and asked twice for drinks/food orders - all seemed well at first. We ordered 2 sandwiches and 2 pints of Diet Coke- after waiting 40 minutes our food came out. One of which was fine- although we had to ask the same member of staff twice for sauces and still waited the best part of 10 minutes to get any. The other sandwich was just not as described on the menu- ham, lettuce and whole grain mustard mayo came with spinach/rocket and lathered in American mustard. Of course I don’t mind about the lettuce but American mustard is completely different to a whole grain mustard mayo! The side salad was also- quite literally- swimming in oil on both plates. Nobody came to check on us to see if the food was okay, when we asked for the bill from one of the waiters and he didn’t even question why one plate was untouched- the bill never actually came and we ended up paying at the bar ourselves. Eventually I caught the manager after he had gone to speak to a separate table and I explained that the situation and while he was incredibly apologetic, it was too late. We’d been here over an hour and I didn’t have time to wait another 40 minutes for another sandwich and crisps. He kindly took this off our bill which I was appreciative of but It was still a disappointing experience when the pub looks so lovely! When we then went to the bar to pay for what we did have, it still came to £20.85 for 1 sandwich and two pints of coke (no service charge was added) which is incredibly expensive. We noticed two other tables around us were also having issues, one group had been there 2 hours and were still missing 3 of their mains and another table had issues with missing drinks and had sent something back to the kitchen Prior to seeing the bill we said we might come back here for drinks as the pub really is beautiful and we frequently do walks around the area but following seeing the drinks prices, I don’t think we’ll return!
I met a couple of mates after work for a meal and a drink. Having looked through the menu, I decided on the “Gourmet” burger. When it was served, I can only best describe it as a Lidl special and even that’s an insult to Lidl. The plate was half filled, chips in a stupid metal pot smaller than a small tin of sweetcorn and a thimble sized pot with some kind of coleslaw. This “Gourmet” burger was far from the description, even burnt on one side, something you’d get from a school fete. I raised my concerns and was asked if I’d like some “bacon” to jazz it up a bit - how about you serve up what you’ve described on your menu (picture shown) in the first place - there is no way on this planet this burger is home made. A Big Mac and chips for £6 is by far supreme and presented better. I paid when I left and was not offered anything off due to my obvious disappointment. That’s 3 people and anyone else we know that won’t go there again - terrible.
We visited for mother's day lunch today, which we were realy looking forward to, arriving at 12.15. The starters were nice, but then we waited until around 14.15 for our mains, watching other parties be served their food before us. The meat and Yorkshire puddings were nice, but the roast potatoes were quite hard, as were the vegetables. We spoke to several members of staff, who said our food was being plated, but still had a little wait. Some staff were attentive and said they would follow up our concerns, but we were finally approached by the deputy manager, who listened to our complaints and kindly reduced our bill. We decided to give the puddings a miss, as had to go by this time. The pub was packed, so thought this was a very good sign, but it seems quantity of guests, won over quality today.
Been here a few times, we come as the children love the outdoor play area. We came with friends this time and thought it would be nice in the sun. The food was expensive but nothing special £10 for a child's meal. For the adults, i don't think much was below £20 for a meal, again nothing special. We had to go to the bar to order and we still got charged 12% service (even on drinks) and no drinks service outside, a complete joke! Staff seemed helpful but the pub wasn’t busy and a theme we have noticed over the last few visits. We last came on fathers day but couldn’t eat because we didn't prebook, fair enough but the pub was not ‘busy’, they didn’t seem bothered. Won’t be eating here again as the experience it leaves a sour taste. We kept giving it the benefit of the doubt but we have given up on it. I think the pub thinks its customers are just cash cows, there are better more reasonable pubs around.
On fathers day we were forced a three-course menu which was overpriced and the quality was bad. The burger was disgusting and the roast was tasteless. We asked for a kids menu to be told we had to pay for a three course meal which is underhanded, to then see other families gaining access to the kids meals? Needs new management.
Not good. Took a long time to get served, I asked for burger to be well done, it was pink. Other meals were average at best. Cutlery being cleaned beside our table made for a headache throughout the meal, no one checked to see if everything was satisfactory and service charge added automatically. As we settled our bill the girl didn’t even say goodbye or thanks, simply started talking to a colleague. Service is very poor, food not great either. Would not recommend or return.
I hate to leave a bad review but honestly what has happened to this place? Went a few years back and it was fab but on our visit last Sunday, this time with two children in tow, it was incredibly disappointing, in fact worst meal we have had I think (and we are not fussy!) To start with the positive, the staff were attentive and welcoming. But that’s where it ends, we went due to recommendations about the kids play area, however it was very run down, one swing broken everything else looking very tired. The food was quite frankly abysmal, two kids fish and chips consisted of two small fish goujons, a table spoon of beans and about 15 chips, my eldest is 5 yrs and left hungry. I had seafood pasta and quality was awful, I was also sick the next day. My partner had lamb kofta, again portion was tiny. Like a starter and quality was low. We had a round of drinks and this all cost nearly £100!! We were so shocked we asked for a receipt to check! On a Sunday in school holidays at peck time you would expect it to be busy, but there was only a handful of tables and only about half of those were eating. It’s really sad to see a once vibrant pub on its knees. With the cost of living we can’t afford to eat out lots but when we do go out I want to enjoy it and not felt totally ripped off. I am jealous of the people able to leave good reviews! Our experience was completely the opposite and we would never return.
