Good food. Drinks are a bit pricy. Service is slow due to limited waiter and waitress. Live music is way too loud when sitting outside. We have a hard time making a conversation.
The beer and fries where amazing. Great place to bike to for great local gems like this. I've never been here before but I'm so grateful I had the opportunity to experience this wonderful establishment. I'll deffinatly be a returning customer. It's atmosphere is just wonderful and it shows it it's employees and guests. Very welcoming and I never felt like my party wast never cast aside after it had a big dinner rush we just beat. The fries and beer are phenomenal. Go your taste buds will thank you.
This place has the best burgers you'll ever taste. I've always ordered their signature burger and it has always blown my mind. The quality is top notch and the taste is out of this world. Ordered a side of fried as well. The quantity is good but the quality is even better. Whenever I visit LA I always take a detour to visit this place. Its totally worth the price and the extra drive.
One of our fave gator pubs around. Offers a wide selection of food and dranks. Very well executed with their speciality cocktails but what has us coming back here is our ultimate favorite beer ever which is their KLOKKE ROELAND! It's an amber beer that has the perfect mix of sweet/butter and refreshing. We even looked for this beer all over Belgium and we had no luck. I have to say you don't need to go all the way to Europe for good beer coz this place offers it all. Even their food is also very delicious. On weekends they even have a musician playing while you dine in their outside patio. Overall highly recommend
Small space inside and out, overall above average selection of beers and wine. Didn't eat here today but want to try their food. Good place for groups of less that 6-8. Tried the food, and it is phenomenal. Back abbey burger was perfect, fish and chips savory and fresh, and the cheese board had a great assortment of flavors. Must try this place.
My Girl was liking to have a cheeseburger 🍔 for dinner tonight, The Back Abbey pooped up on Google search for best burgers. Checked reviews, some of them were complaining about the french fries so I had to find out for myself. We ordered the Back Abbey and Backyard burgers, Cut them in half so we could both try together. We were gonna order a large fry but the server said the small fry would be more than enough he also recommended to cheeseburger medium rare rare, going to be true was delicious!!! Servers work together as a Team, shop has Plenty of help to get the job done , Burgers 🍔 n fries 🍟 spot on, everything came up fresh n quickly, service was great!!! Not sure why people were complaining about the fries on other reviews, they have their own little style of fries 🍟, tasted good!!! We would recommend the Back Abbey for a nice meal …….
It is a restaurant, that is located in downtown area of Claremont. I have been to this restaurant once. It was at the beginning of December 2021. The meal, that I have ordered, was delicious. At the same time, it was prepared in a timely manner. Furthermore, they have a good selection of beers and wines. The prices, though, were on the expensive side. Still, I did not regret spending my cash. Since, the meal was delicious, and they had a good selection of beers.
This place is my favorite French fry location. They fry it in duck fat. Crispy outside soft inside and a great beer selection. They recently offered old fashions, and they are great.
Great unpretentious pub with quite the selection of German, Belgium and Dutch brews. Happy hour was quite the deal and the beignets were fantastic! Mussels and steak fries were bomb and service was great! Great place to hang with friends for good shared eats and beers you don't find just anywhere!
We are visiting our kids in Claremont and found this great restaurant bar near our hotel casa 425. We ate at the bar and the amazing bar tender Eric created a drink for me that was delicious and I normally don’t try anything new so this was a big leap and it was beautiful too We will definitely return on our next Claremont trip
Amazing beers -loads of European on tap, plus others not in tap. Incredible food, casual and lively environment. Great for group get togethers or friends out for a bite or beers. Schnitzel, pretzels, pommes frites, steak sandwiches, and amazing burgers. Lot of choices. Parking might be hard so may need to walk but it's in a great area. Will be back next time I am up in Claremont area. Thank you Back Abbey for making our family get-together memorable.
This place has Amazing live music, good food, and great service. Never, and bad experience here and we come often...
Parking on the street is always full. However, half a block south is a free public parking structure, drive to the upper levels and park by the stairs and elevator for quick and easy parking. The staff at the Back Abbey are friendly and aim to make your visit remarkable. The food is delicious. We shared the Funn Diip, which changes each month and was delightful. It was toasted bread with artichoke dip. We also ordered the beignets, which were covered by chocolate, strawberries, and whipped cream. So yummy!
The Back Abbey is small but mighty! I always end up here when I'm in the area with friends and we're not sure where to get drinks. The drinks are delicious and the beer is good. The food is also really good, but to be honest, I could eat just the fries and be happy. The fries are crazy good. Definitely check this place out.
Just a really solid spot to get away, get some exotic Belgium beer and be left alone in the daytime Being going for 10 years now Very solid and nothing to complain about They keep the food the same throughout Decent bar food that fits the occasion anyway you cut it. Not overly high scale
This has become a favorite of ours. I especially like the man's salad (with slices of steak). Many places have similar on their menu but not as generous as the one served here. They are noted for their hamburgers, but there are many other options like mussels, duck fat fries, pork spaetzel, and many more options. All of which are delicious and satisfying. They only serve Belgium beer. Tell them what you like and they will offer you similar. They have added a larger heated patio which triples the number of people that can be accommodated. The staff is wonderful as well. In my opinion, it's the "gem" of Claremont.
I LOVE BACK ABBEY!!! I travel from LA just for their burgers and fries!!!! I'm sure everything else is great, but im all about the burgers!!!!!
Very chill and relaxing and comfort restaurant. And all the menus looks and sounds scrumptious.
Second time I’ve eaten here, got the burger this time. They actually cook it how you order it, really excellent. Last time I got the filet sandwich with us even better. Fantastic and unusual beer selection. Really fast and friendly service. Also prices are very normal for quality imported beer and really great food. Folks complaining must not be local…
This is a popular spot, with lots of good European beer on tap and bottles, with good food. A little on the pricey side, but worth the stop of you want a unique food and beer/wine. 4 stars because they didn't have a good (or obvious) vegetarian selection.
I have been at this restaurant once! It was in the beginning of December, 2021. The meal, that I have ordered was quite delicious. Furthermore, at the time, for a Friday evening, there was ample of space to sit down. They have, also, a good selection of beers. At the same time, they hired good bartenders. These bartenders are capable of making good cocktails. Of course, since the service is of top notch quality, the prices are on the expensive side. Nevertheless, I did not regret visiting this establishment. I will definitely visit this place again, when I have some disposable cash.
Great food, had the cheese platter for an appetizer and the portobello burger. Amazing! I would definitely recommend that burger.
Seriously my new favorite place! The meat platter has samples of meat that remind me of Germany 🇩🇪 and all the good memories I had there. I got their back abbey burger and I would dare say it's the best I've had so far. Amazing flavor! Overall great ambiance and decent service. You need to stop here before you try any place else.
Overall, decent experience. The food was really good. We ordered a cheese board, steak salad, fish and chips, and a few drinks. The cocktails were really good. The service was great, despite how busy they were. The atmosphere was so-so. I felt like it was a bit too crowded, and someone in the back was smoking, which was a bit gross to smell while eating.
Incredible food. The mussels dish is up there in my list of “things I ate that I won’t forget eating”. Had a great dark beer here, best one I’ve ever had: quadruple or quad something. And a cocktail, the Orange Blossom: flowery and orangey, really enjoyed it as a gin fan. Will absolutely be coming back. Server named Joe helped me out a lot: dope guy and I wish him the best. Note: came back and found out the dark beer I got: Unibroue Terrible. As someone who knows a lot more about beers now I’m a little embarrassed for my past self Also the pretzel was really good. And the French 75 is one of my favorite cocktails I’ve had.
Back Abbey never disappoints! Best selection of German beers and food that always hits the spot.
Ready great food. Service was excellent! One of my favorite places to eat.
Never had a bad experience at this place, used to stop here for lunch back in the day. Service is always excellent, the food is always top notch, and last time we were behaving so tried out the mocktails, they're as tasty as the real thing if not more so! Also huge shout to their beer selection, they seriously know what's up!
This is still my favorite pub. I love that they have the correct glassware for each beer, usually labeled with the brewery and beer name. I'm not normally the type to care, but it does make a difference in the aroma and head of the beer. Particularly with the delicate euro beers they specialize in. It's a little detail, but it elevates the experience. The draft beer selection does (slowly) change over time. But there's always something interesting to try. This is a great place to sit and relax while the kids take an art class at the nearby Studio Clairemont. I have fond memories of playing cards with my family (with some duck fat fries and a charcuterie board) while a kid was in class. I like the redesigned patio. It's not as comfortable and homey as before, but the new sun shade is a welcome addition. The menu is a bit more expensive than I remember, but that to be expected during pandemic recovery.
Ayden and Callissa were absolutely amazing! The back abbey is one of my favorite restaurants in Claremont. Love the food and the atmosphere! The staff is one of this place’s best asset!
🍻🍔 I just took my wife out to The Back Abbey the other night and it was great! For starters, the service was on point! From the host that sat us, all the way through to getting the check. They were attentive, and friendly. I love Belgian beers and I was stoked that they had Delirium. My wife got a margarita and she said it was great as well. The food was super tasty. We got the Back Abbey & Backyard Burgers. They had a ton of flavor and came out quickly. It’s usually super busy, so be prepared to wait or get there early to put your name in!
One of my favorites! Been here many times the past few years. This review is overdue. I am Never disappointed when I come. Although, it can get packed here, it's worth the wait. Excellent place to grab delicious entrees, snacks, brew and spirits. Food here is so delicious, and the selection of drinks is amazing. My favorites are the brats, schnitzels, beignets, and the martini espresso! Their seasonal menus are great too. My S/O loved the hot totty, and the burgers.
This must be the best beer place in Claremont! Very extensive list of outstanding beers (many Belgium), both on draft and in bottles. Food very good as well. I was surprised to find such good beers outside of Portland. I’ll be back!
2 people... We had a few high quality beers on tap from Belgium. Every beer comes with its named glass. Food is excellent and drinks are some of the best I had at a gastropub. If anyone loves Belgian and German beers check this place out. It's the only place I found on the West Coast with a large selection of Trappist ales so far. Btw all fried food is fried in duck fat; NO SEED OILS HERE (HEALTHY)!
The hidden gem of the Claremont Village. The most excellent beer selection, great food and wonderful atmosphere. Staff is really friendly and helpful as well as knowledgeable about what they serve. Food quality is excellent and worth the price. There is street parking and a multilevel parking structure nearby. The dining area is dim and cool feel and the patio is nice.
Lots of greats drinks and food! They have German and Belgian imported beers, my friends think it's worth the drive from LA to get them. The duck fat fries are really amazing, the dipping sauces are on another level, so good. Service was awesome. The servers were very kind and food/drinks came out very quick.
I had the pleasure of dining at The Back Abbey and I must say, it was an outstanding experience from start to finish. The first thing I noticed was the cleanliness and tidiness of the establishment. It’s clear that the staff takes pride in maintaining a spotless environment, which is always a great first impression. Speaking of the staff, they were exceptionally nice and attentive throughout my visit. From the moment I walked in, I was greeted warmly and felt genuinely welcomed. The service was prompt, and they made sure to check in regularly without being intrusive. Now, let’s talk about the burgers – they are nothing short of phenomenal. Each bite was a delightful explosion of flavors, perfectly cooked and seasoned. The quality of the ingredients was evident, and the variety of options ensured we had choices. The drinks were equally impressive, complementing the meal perfectly with a great selection to choose from. Overall, my experience at The Back Abbey was fantastic. The combination of a clean and inviting atmosphere, excellent service, and top-notch food makes this a place I’ll definitely be returning to. Highly recommended for any burger lover!
Found this restaurant driving through from Las Vegas. The breakfast Abbey burger was quality flavor and great flavor. Not a fan of brioche buns but it was still good. This waffle and chicken sandwich though, wow. That one was absolutely amazing. Came with a hot honey syrup that added a perfect amount of sweetness. The duck fat fries were also a perfect crispness and flavor, the different dipping sauces were also great.
Just went in for a few drinks. They have happy hour all day Monday and Tuesday. Had the fried pickles, which was great. I had the lemoncello spritzer. Very tasty and refreshing. See also had the lavender fog which was VERY good as well. I wasn't to go back to actually eat and try more of their specialty drinks
The food here is quite good, maybe not life changing. Or at least for what I usually go for here, burgers. My only qualm is the portions and pricing ratio, especially ordering for just one person. The burger isn't like huge, avg size. Yet the duck fat fries don't make much sense. 7.50 for a fry but they try to talk to you into getting the large for 10 so a large fry and burger is at least 30 bucks. What do i do with a whole box of fries? And its heavier than regular fries. I don't think anyone really expects nacho sized fries for sharing. I would prefer an individual portion but this makes sense for a large group Still, this is a nice place for a date night or cozy dinner. The ambiance is really there. Old historical building. Great drink menu. If you like bars or pubs, then this one is probably a must-see for you
Had the burger and schnitzel. Both excellent. The fries good as well. They were a little slow service-wise, but these days who has full staffing? Would definitely go back. From a male perspective, talent was good.
They're known for there burgers. Stick to that. Crab cakes were bland, no crab flavor. Steak arugula salad, steak bland and overcooked. Both burgers were fab and would return for those. The fries? spectacular. Truly worth the visit.
Went here unexpectedly day after Christmas with my Daughter. I had forgotten how delicious their burgers are. The Pomme Frittes were slapilicious 🤣 and my beer was tasty, I asked for something similar to New Castle and I can’t recall the name but it was savory pairing with my Fish and Chips. Respectfully Reviewed
Dog friendly patio and friendly service. Clean, nice ambiance. I got the fish and chips and it was so fresh and tender and delicious 🐟 Subtracted one star because they seemed understaffed and they took a while to take our order. We had a party of four, and there was at least 10 mins between each person served, so one of us got our plate 30 mins after the first plate. The appetizers came out last. Very odd.
I've been coming here for a couple of years. And it's a good experince overall. Sometimes the waiters can be smart asses, but they're cool. Beer selection is great. A lot of beers that aren't common, they have it here more likely. Appetizers and food is good as well. I like to sit at the outside patio in the summer. Nice and cozy place. I order the Fin du Monde beer, unfiltered wheat beer. But which ever you choose, you'll enjoy it I'm sure.
Really nice little spot in Claremont. As the name implies, it's in the back. I drove past it as it is tucked away a little. It's a little upscale pub. So everything is going to have a more fancy take. This includes the alcohol, dont expect to get Budweiser or Coors for beer. Also dont expect your more brand name spirits here. That being said it is all very good. They have so have seasonal meals as well. So the menu will be a little different, which is a nice change of pace. They do have a lot of standard menu items they have year round. We split a BBQ Chicken sandwich with a salad. The sause had a little bite and the chicken was very juicy. They only had 2 desserts; beignets and the seasonal Cheese cake. We got the beignets and they we very good. They come with some fresh fruit on the sides. Overall it was a really nice place and we will go back.
Fun little spot to visit outside of the core Claremont Village. As you'd expect, there is a great selection of Belgian beers, both on tap and in bottles. The food choices are pretty decent. We were pleased to find mussels. The sauce was delicious; it would have been great to have more bread to soak up the deliciousness. I'd add a star if they could provide better descriptions of the brews (the servers weren't too helpful and seemed overwhelmed) and carried some lower ABV choices. All said, we would go back to hang out in this back alley patio.
Great place. Great beer selection. Not a lot of space indoors. But cozy. Can get a bit loud indoors. Nice outdoor area for sunny days or with heaters for those occasionally chilly days. Menu is small and simple but the food is very good. Not for sports fans although there are two tiny TVs above the bar. Go for the beer and food. Bring conversation.
Only 4 stars because of the service. Our server was very nice and helpful. Answered all of our questions and gave pretty good recommendations. I had a whiskey sour and I thought it was incredible. I'm not a whiskey drinker but I really enjoyed their whiskey sour. My friend had their Spencer IPA. Which was really good. You can taste the hops but not in a bitter way. As for food, we ordered the Crab Cakes as an appetizer. They're were really delicious and had a great balance of flavors. My friend had they're burger. Which was really good and I had the Steak Frittes (medium rare). My entree wasn't the best it was okay. They definitely overcooked the steak and was very under seasoned. I definitely would not recommend the steak and fries.
Always a charmer. The Burgers are fantastic. and the beers are well chosen. This is a very nice gastropub that offers a nice selection of very delicious meals at non crazy prices. The beers are clearly for those who might want to try and expand their belgian repertoire. Its always a treat and the the desserts are worth coming back for.
Taste :4.2/5 Environment: 4.3/5 Service:4.2/5 Stay pretty crowed over the weekend. Indoor seats are limited First come first reserve ! I like the vibe on the weekend . Live music bring the awesome vibe if you choose to sit outside . It’s a bit chilly at the night .bring a jacket is optional. Recommend Cheese board Beef sandwich and back Abby burger
Came here for a second dinner/late night kinda vibe and it was great! A fun german vibe, live music.... fun german beers, great frites, and beignets. I'd honestly just come back and hang out just to have more frites and a beer. It can get a little busy but they have outdoor seating as well if you just bring a jacket. Food: 8/10 Atmosphere: 9/10 Service: 7/10 Value: 7/10
Great burgers, nice fries, and prices were about right. Had the lamb burger and the alley burger - both great! I wish I could come up here a couple more time to try the rest of their burgers. That being said, these burgers could be an easily 10/10 if they filled them more with thicker meat and/or toppings. It felt like the burgers were missing a bit to match the circumference vibe they gave. Maybe im just overthinking lol
Although the beer selection is fantastic, the food is not. I ordered the schnitzel and it was so dry that I couldn’t even finish it. I attempted to dip it in my partner’s sauce but there was no saving that dry, overcooked chunk of meat.
Apparently, sometimes they decide to shut down the bar and kitchen well ahead of their posted hours if they decide they aren't busy enough (in my direct experience, this meant 90 minutes before when they were at abpit 50% capacity). The fries are good, crispy, and served with three dipping sauces. For some inexplicable reason, the burgers come with a side salad, and you can't substitute the fries, so you'll have to spend an extra $10 to taste them. They claim their burgers are made from 28 day aged beef--which I am skeptical of--but even if true, it doesn't impart any particular improvement to the patty. Overall, the experience was fine, and I may try them for lunch again sometime, but I'll never risk another dinner on them for fear of walking into a closed kitchen.
I really enjoy the place but this has been the second time within a month that the service was not great. Today a shorter Hispanic guy was our waiter but completely forgot about our table and it wasn't even busy. Another waiter, tall red hair Caucasian girl ended up serving us and was extremely attentive. Good food, good drinks, but needs better service.
Dinner. When you pay higher prices so these over privalge kids think they are going to make a living at serving people at least smile. We thanked and praised our waitress every time she came by. Never a smile. Never! If you can't handle dealing with the public become an Uber driver. My son was here 2 times last month said food was great waitresses bad. I almost feel we are rated as we enter. Use to have to wait, 2 times last month no wait. May be a sign of bad service?
Pretzel was good. Fries are ehh. Grilled cheese had two thin slices of cheese which left the edges without cheese as it was sourdough bread. They should have used grated cheese to cover entire surface. I was expecting a hot gooey grilled cheese, not the case! You can see the cheese is barely warm. Hot cheese would have folded over to the sides of the bread. The soup was tasty.
The Fish was a 6 out of 10, but the Burger is definitely a Hard 8, I was happy that the Server gave us a better batch in the fries. The 1st round was stale and cold. The Servers were very attentive after waving them down. They seem to crowd together and Chit Chat, I get it, but I just don't do when Customers are in plain sight
I’ve been going Here for lunch with daughters for past ten years. Today we had mediocre service and the spicy chicken sandwich, which is normally very good, was dry and tasteless. I should’ve went to KFC for a better meal. Lately ,The food here and experience with the servers, has been less than par… With food and entertainment prices as high as they are, you should expect at least good service and great food… So, I suggest to go somewhere else. I’m sorry ,it’s not good here anymore
Hadn't been to the Back Abbey in a few years. This Monday afternoon visit was a disappointment. Service was almost nonexistent, to the point where one had to find the server to get a drink refill. The signature burger I ordered "medium" was well done and would have been flung across the patio if I were Gordon Ramsay. Had a really good experience here during our first go around six or seven years ago. Maybe this was just an off day, but in any case, we won't be back.
This place used to be great. Now the servers are less than professional. I had to ask 2 servers 3 times for a glass of water after ordering our food. Only got the water with the final check.
We waited for more than half an hour for our lunch, not acceptable. The kitchen is small but the wait was too long. The food was average - greasy. The tables were sticky and the floors were greasy. The aircon inside wasn't cool enough, better to a it outside. Oh and sitting outside usnt nixe cause the building next door has it's laundry vent spewing out hot air directly onto diners.
Review is for brunch only. Hospitality was friendly however a couple of drinks were forgotten and went long stretches without seeing our server. French toast was very dense and sweet. Small portion but tough to finish. Avocado toast was very sad, unseasoned and came with one half raw- half roasted tomato see photo. Best thing we had were the potatoes. Deep fried and battered deliciousness. Eggs were cooked perfectly, but everything was unseasoned. Not under seasoned, but literally not a bit of salt on the eggs or avocado. Worst thing we ordered were the biscuits. They were so dense to the point of we wondered if they were still raw dough in the middle. Didn’t work as part of the benny. The biscuit side also was supposed to come with lingonberry jam but instead came with syrup. Especially at this high price I wouldn’t return.
The menu is not available until 3pm apparently. We were stuck with a small menu with brunch and some burgers at 12 on a Sunday. No thanks. Need to update everything. Wouldn’t have come if I knew this
The food was not good. I do not recommend. The salad from the steak salad was the only bearable thing. The steak smelled like overused oil and was not fresh. The schnitzel was not good either. There was also a pungent smell coming from their kitchen, even though we were sitting outside. There were a good amount of customers there, so maybe we didn't order the right food but either way we will not go back.
I have mixed feelings about the Back Abbey. They have the best beer menu by far and even give many of the local breweries a run for their money. The service is usually pretty good here and the patio is nice, especially during the day when it’s calm. The food menu options are good, even if overpriced. Have the mussels and a burger and you’ll be less disappointed; trust me, do not deviate from this order). If you add the fries, or any other side for that matter, as one is often tempted to do, then you’ll find your experience will be out of whack. You’ll think the fries are special, but they really should be included with the burger… and there’s the rub. It’s a thing in Claremont for our restaurant’s to take that extra noticeable tug at their patrons’ wallets. Even when satisfied you’ll think, “what price victory?” It’s hard to eat in town and wonder why you didn’t just hit some destination you’ve had in mind instead… ad astra per aspera. Edit: Met family there for lunch (their suggestion). Service was SLOW on a Sunday. They just ignored us for 30 minutes. They took our order, the food came out one… plate… at… a… time… about ten minutes apart each for a table of five. Two of the meat temperatures were wrong, and one got sent back. We wanted our check but thirty minutes had passed since anyone had checked on us. We were there for over two hours and not by choice. Screw it, I tell the fam I’d meet them at home and went inside to settle the check. Well, turns out that while I was inside settling up and still adding a tip, the server chased my wife down and yelled at her and our kids in public, “hey are you going to pay for your food!” I guess she was aware we were still there after all. Didn’t realize this had happened until I got home. Wow. Unbelievable? Not really, not anymore. Update: haven’t been there since my last review. I walk past it everyday and just today I realized, “I’m not missing a god damned thing.”
I recently had a date at this location, we were seated almost immediately in the patio area. It was hot outside, so we asked for waters as we sat down. 10 minutes pass, no waters were brought. We ask a second server for a water and he said he'd bring them right away. Another 10 minutes pass and he comes out to take the orders of two other tables that had just sat down. Our order had not been taken so we left and went across the street to Gus's BBQ which had the best service and food!
This place sucks for anyone GF. Not one appetizer, dessert or beer. They have only 2 food items, a steak salad and a chicken something. Most restaurants have become more inclusive and sensitive to changing times. It is embarrassing for them to even write GF on their menu, when they only have 2 items in the entire menu including appetizers and desserts.
Worst customer service we’ve ever experienced from someone answering the phone for reserving. Called in the afternoon for a dinner reservation to ask if dogs are allowed, as we’re bringing our small dog. Gal said “absolutely” and then hung up! My husband called immediately after and mentioned she hung up - but no apologies, no mentioning of the hang up, hell - she could just lie and we’ll take a decent reason. It’s for our wedding anniversary and so we’re willing to spend whatever, and have a memorable time. But I’m not willing to give this business my time and money so they can be rude to us. I cannot even imagine the service we’d get when we eat there! Maybe it’s a super busy and wealthy business so they don’t need more people to dine.
I've been there twice and treated very poorly by the hostess. Even told to go to another establishment Eureka at one point. Maybe it's a sister company since they promote it so strongly? I don't know but I really wanted to try the food and give an honest review. Last time we were moved by the same hostess because she wanted to fit another group where we were seated which I find to be very unorthodox. Maybe it just wasn't meant to be.
