Blake's Cafe is a small-town diner with a nostalgic atmosphere. Customers rave about the friendly service, especially mentioning servers like Benjamin and Elizabeth. While most enjoy the food, consistency can be an issue, with some finding dishes overly salty or poorly prepared.

A small town diner with good choices. We had chicken fried steak sandwich, fried catfish, shrimp salad, and smothered steak was tasty. Sides were cooked fresh and service was friendly.
Great food and wonderful wait staff. We had a ¹/2 order of onion rings for a starter and it was a lot! The chicken strips were great as were the fried zucchini. The Swiss mushroom burger was fabulous. It looked like a dogwood burger when put together. The grilled chicken sandwich was tasty as well. Fun stuff on the walls. Leave a dollar on the wall and at the year it goes to charity. That says something about this place.
Country cafe…great place, great chicken fried steak and every thing else.
This historic site is a must visit. Service is outstanding from the moment you open the door! Home cooking that is delicious and portions that satisfy the hungrier. Cozy atmosphere, great menu, and superior staff. Give it a try. You'll be glad you did!
Blackened catfish was wonderful!!--- and the fried zucchini is the best side I have ever had. My sister's chicken dinner was also wonderful. Our plates were totally clean!!
The place had a friendly TX home cooking feeling, you felt welcome and the staff was very helpful and friendly I would definitely recommend it to my friends. If a home cooking meal is what you're looking for then this is the place to go to and the prices are reasonable I would definitely go back there next time I go visit my friends in Seguin they are the ones that recommended the cafe. Looking forward to another visit down the road, again thanks for being a real TX cafe to go eat and relax 👍👍👍👍👍😎😎😎
If you want good home made food, this is the place to go. Service is great. I have lived 5 miles away from it for 22 years. And I eat there as often as I can. The atmosphere reminds me of relatives' gatherings. ❤️ .It's like stepping back in better times.
First timer here and pleasantly satisfied with an awesome chicken fried steak, we also had the chicken fried chicken and a cheese burger. All were very tasty along with the fried pickles and onion rings, okra, and zucchini!!! Friday nights they have prime rib! Can’t wait to try that. Visited again on a Friday night. Why you may ask is that important? Well because they have prime rib which was very good with a reasonable price. It may not be the biggest piece but the value is certainly there along with the onion rings and fried pickles!! Change the rating from a 4 to a 5. The atmosphere goes with the story of the building which I think is very cool.
I was greeted by friendly staff and a friendly waitress named Ursula. The place is equipped with several tables and booths along the walls. There is extra parking behind the restaurant. The food was delicious - I will return to try some of the other dishes listed.
I love their food hot food and their business is great ! Waitress are awesome excellent management best place to eat Hot wings and chicken fried Steak love their tea also Great Meals
Terrific menu with so many burger, entree and appetizer choices! You can order a half or whole order of fried mushrooms. Our son likes their liver and onions. My husband ordered the 2 piece fried pollock with french fries and hushpuppies (also available as a 4 piece meal for $4 more)! I also ordered the 2 piece fried pollock but substituted sweet potato fries. These 2 pieces of fish are large and remind me of Long John Silvers but with much better tartar sauce! Our waitress, Karen, was very friendly and served us well. She kept our iced tea refills coming on a hot day and provided us with a to-go cup when we couldn't finish the last glass. Excellent comfort food and terrific service keeps us coming back for more!
In town visiting , the moment you walk in you are greeted , the customer service is so friendly and the atmosphere is homie. The food was delicious! Especially the fried cat fish , highly recommend . Will be coming back!
Stopped in for Tuesday dinner. They were not busy, so we were seated/served right away. I got the pulled pork sandwich and sweet potato fries. Both were excellent. My wife got the Buffalo chicken salad. It was good but could have used more cheese and tomatoes (only two). The staff are super friendly and food is pretty great/reasonable too. We will return.
Best part was the waitress. She was outstanding.
Always a pleasure eating here during lunch time. Fast and attentive staff all around. Also some of the best chicken fried chicken can be found here.
Always good fried foods. Cod was underwhelming. Chicken tenders, fries, fried zucchini, and Mac n cheese are perfect 🤤
It was Friday evening, so I had the Prime Rib with fried okra and corn for sides. I ordered the prime rib medium rare and it was perfect! It was fork tender and oh so flavorful! My wife ordered blackened grilled chicken breast with salad and onion rings for her sides. She didn't say much during dinner but she was obviously happy! The food and service were absolutely over the top!
Solid local choice...staff is always friendly and attentive. Good value for the money especially now a days. Don't expect a fancy dining experience but if you want country cooking and not the typical tex-mex in the area this is a solid choice. Try the fried mushrooms.
Seated immediately during dinner time. The mozzarella sticks, salmon, chicken, steak, and catfish were delectable. Must mention, our waitress Cindy was fantastic, great table side mannerisms, friendly, quick, and funny.
Fantastic food. Short staffed but still amazing food. Everything was nice and hot. Tasted fresh and staff was friendly. Would highly recommend. Yall doing a fantastic job.
Fun place to have lunch. Had the special spicy chicken. Was delicious.
We haven't been here since before C-19. Stopped in with my in-laws for lunch. The cafe is looking good, nice staff and the food was awesome! The Fried Mushrooms were probably the best around! Wife and I split the large catfish. We had plenty for two. My in-laws both had the Liver & Onions. They said it was real good. I'll take their word on that. Just not my thing. Price was okay but a little more than expected, but everything is expensive everywhere.
A dear friend brought me to Blake's to celebrate my birthday. I had the chicken fried steak sandwich with a side of fried zucchini. Both were very tasty. The atmosphere is pleasant, and our server was very attentive. We were there during lunchtime and it was not crowded. I would highly recommend Blake's. My friend tells me it is her and her husband's go-to place when they choose to go out to eat. I'm sure I will go again.
Great hole in the wall. Friendly staff. Great food. Need building
Lovely old school eatery. Welcomed as we walked in. All Staff were attentive and friendly. Food, yum, chicken fried chicken, huge portion, mashed potatoes fresh, cream gravy yum!!
Tasty down-home cooking in a historic building. Americana and the country style dishes made this a hit on our trip! Service was fast and efficient. Reasonable prices and large portions had us blown away. This eatery definitely warrants a visit.
First off, I loved the atmosphere. Im the type to choose a mom and pop place over a chain and I'm not one to be bothered by the state of the building. I've personally found a few 'hole in the wall' places that are better than any chain and this is definitely one of them. The old school decorations mixed with some what appear to be newer renovations had me at the get go. The food was great. I had fried mushrooms and a pulled pork sammich with fries and was in no way disappointed. The servers were friendly and appeared to have each other's backs when I came to helping customers with requests so that was a big thing I liked. I made sure to take some pics of the food and a couple of the restaurant so people can get a good feel of what to expect if they stop by. If I'm ever in the area I'll definitely make a point to stop back!
Benjamin was our server and he was absolutely phenomenal. The way he speaks about the menu, ingredients, owners you can tell he is proud to work here. Actually all the servers were amazing. The food was absolutely delicious. Literally my entire family cleaned our plates we could not stop! I highly recommend the chicken fried steak and burger! I cannot belive we waited over a year to try this place. We will be regulars from now on!
Went there today for lunch. Had the Ribeye Sandwich. It was delicious, cooked to perfection. Great service also.
Small town all American cafe. Great atmosphere and staff and the food is decent. I’ve come back to this place because they are consistent in their level of quality and I thoughly enjoy the small town “homey” atmosphere but the food is nothing spectacular.
This is a cool place to have a meal. Great food, good service, and you are sitting in a historical building! The bar is an amazing site to behold! Definitely worth detour on your route to visit!
Very convenient parking. Food is always excellent and the steaks are great. Service is excellent. Britney is fantastic. Cannot find better steak in a 100 mile radius. Perfectly prepared.
Very good food, plenty on portion and well prepared! Great service, an enjoyable experience for all. Nice nostalgic atmosphere.
A charming harbinger of the American Spirit, Blake's Cafe is a delightful small town diner I'd never miss while passing through McQueeney. The food was exactly what you'd expect from a homestyle café. My wife and I ordered fried catfish, which was perfectly seasoned and breaded, as well as a BBQ mac burger, cooked just right and rich with cheese. Our server was attentive and as sweet as can be all smiles and happy to help. As pass through Blake's Cafe is worth a detour of the main roads and we will be coming back!
We were deciding on where to eat for Valentine's Day dinner after I got off work and drove out of San Antonio to get away from the crowds. We always love to try new places in search of hidden gems and this is now one for us. My husband's been here once before and remembered how good it was. We arrived around 8pm and there were a lot of tables available. The customer service was great, or waiter was very attentive and friendly. The food was delicious and we thought the price was great and reasonable, especially for Valentine's Day dinner and not having to wait around for an open table with a 10 year old and a toddler. We'll definitely be back. We were so stuffed we forgot about dessert and I think that's what I'll be ordering first next time we go 🫣🤣
On my way home found this Cafe and it did not disappoint one bit. Had the onion rings as an appetizer and the batter was light and crisp. The chicken fried steak was amazing, the batter was also light, crisp, and so delicious. The lemon meringue pie OMG, ITS A MUST GET!!! just going to leave it at that. The gentleman that was waiting our table provided excellent service and probably was one of the most respectful waiters I've ever had. Almost forgot, their sweet tea was on point. Stop on by at Blake's Cafe if you're ever in the area.
We loved the fried mushrooms! They’re my kids favorite! Food was great and so was the service. We had a new girl and she did a great job 👏 the only complaint I have is the kids burgers were burnt and they didn’t like them but they definitely devoured the Mac & cheese! Steak was cooked perfectly and didn’t need sauce, the chicken fried chicken is very thin, but some people enjoy it like that. Wish we could have tried desert but it was out lol
A wonderful tucked away, in a small town, Café. Home cooked type of food. Cheery wait staff. It's hardly ever a wait time. Adult alcohol beer & wine are very basic selections. Unique atmosphere. Blake's is on our rotating visits to eat out. Our town next door is very touristy, so we don't mind the 20-minute drive!
Great food, Great hometown atmosphere, we had a party of 5 around church time on Sunday. We had to wait about 20 minutes which is fine. The food made it well worth the wait. Meatloaf is very good, catfish is also very good. Great thing about having a larger party is sampling what everyone else ordered. The staff was very friendly and the food is on point with what you would expect from a home town eatery. They have been here for 20 years so that should say something about anyplace that can survive that long and not be associated with a franchise. Keep up the good work., I'll be back..
Fried mushrooms 🍄 were delicious! I enjoyed the small chicken fried steak (which was plenty big) with onion rings and fried zucchini. Hubs had grilled pork chops with mashed potatoes and applesauce. Just a couple of side notes: I don't like Hunt's ketchup. We preferred the Ranch dressing to the cream gravy served with the mushrooms. Husband didn't like the pork gravy served with the chops. The applesauce is an individual, prepackaged plastic cup (hubs LOVED it). The chocolate caramel pie was yummy, very rich. Hubs liked his pumpkin pie but was disappointed with the whipped topping. Service was great! Friendly and attentive staff. Fun atmosphere with playful decor. We would return, bring friends and recommend to others.
The food is pretty great. I had the blackened salmon while my husband had the sirloin. He ordered it rare and they were able to cook it perfectly rare! Huge kudos there. The fried zucchini was excellent and so was the rice pilaf. Our waitress was super sweet too! Also, the dishes we ordered were reasonably priced, although we found our servings a little on the smaller side, they were big enough to fill us up.
First time here. Food was good. Service was fast and friendly. I look forward to going back and trying something different next time.
Service was so nice and friendly, especially with my little ones. Our mains were really good but it was our appetizer and sides that were lacking in flavor. Still a very nice place when we were passing through.
My husband and I attended the @hopeful_acres gala recently. We won a $50 gift certificate to @blakescafemcqueeney. Today, we checked it out for lunch. We started with their Sweet Chili Wings. Finger licking good! We scarfed down the 8 pieces. 5 stars for the wings. Hubby tried the Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes. They're supposed to be known for this dish and unfortunately it was chewy so it's 3 stars. I ordered the Swiss Mushroom Burger with onion rings. The onion rings were great but the burger lacked seasoning. We got Dad the Beer Battered Alaskan Pollock with sweet potato fries. This entree and side was excellent. We brought home leftovers. Mixed review for this staple in McQueeney. Perhaps it was an off day. The desserts sounded good but we were too full to have any. Would be worth checking out if you're in the area.
We have visited Blake’s Cafe in McQueeney a few times now, and it’s been good every time. I’ve had the Chicken Fried Steak a couple of times and my wife got the Hamburger Steak. Chicken Fried Steak Plate 8/10 - probably on my top 5 all time CFS. Large and thick cut battered and fried to a golden crunch. Lots of flavor and very hearty. The meat is thicker which I like. Damn good! I also had the Mashed Potatoes and Onion Rings. Both were very good. Hamburger Steak 5/10 - she ordered it with sautéed onions and brown gravy. She also had the Sweet Potato Fries. She said the Steak lacked flavor though. Service 9/10 - the service was fantastic!! Never let the drinks run out!! Atmosphere 7/10 - it’s an older restaurant and gives a comfortable vibe. Overall 8/10 - definitely give these guys a try!!
Elizabeth was our friendly waitress. The parking lot was so full, we almost left. Plenty of room to eat inside. I ordered the grilled chicken n shrimp. They were very small n shrimp was a little too lemon peppery. Mac n cheese was good, green beans OK. My husband had the sirloin n it was seasoned well. The tea was delicious, but I think it just didn't set well in our stomachs. We love Blake's, but will try something new next time. They used to have catch of the day, but I'm saddened that they don't anymore.
Well recieved for the frist time to eat there. My wife and I have a family of 11, but no worries for space. The cafe put us in our own sitting space. Prices were high in contrast to the food quality and quantity. My order was the boneless pork chops. They were not boneless and were dry and about a quarter inch thick. Not well prepared two very small chops along with side that came with it. Not satisfying, was still hungry afterward. Staff was friendly but we will probably not eat there again.
For a small town joint it is pretty good. Their batter for their seafood platter is done really well. I went for the "best steaks" that they had awards posted for. Wasn't the best steak ,but at least it was cooked the right temp which is always a hit or miss for me. It didn't have much flavor. I wished it was seasoned a little more. Besides that, the employees are nice and knowledgeable of the menu.
Food was pretty good. I had the chicken fried steak and my husband had a burger. Mine wasn't the best of ever had but it was good. The restaurant has a rustic charm to it , but felt a little dirty. Our waitress was very nice and service was quick. Overall, I'd go again and try something different.
I have ordered food here before and it was great! They changed the menu and I wouldn't order the same plate again. The atmosphere reminds me of growing up in a small farm town and that means a lot to me. I'll try something else and would go back as the price is reasonable unlike most restaurants today
Good home town comfort food. I had liver and onions that was a stingy portion. My man had a huge pork chop portion though. Atmosphere is old and dingy. I question how clean the kitchen is. The hostess is rude and cocky. Our waitress was sweet and attentive. Hit and a miss.
Went for prime rib. They now only have it on Fridays and the price is at market price. Many changes under new owner. All the steak prices are market price. Example: a 12 oz ribeye today was $23. $19 for sirloin. No little loafs of bread(was told the bakery closed.) Side bake potatoes now $2.49. Seems like less choices with higher prices. I paid $17.89 for 8 shrimp withe baked potatoes and water. The shrimp was fine.
Last 2 times the food just isn't what it used to be. I ordered the chili cheese hamburger steak and the meat had zero seasoning. Even adding salt didn't help.
Had the Prime rib last Friday. The cut was a nice medium, very little flavor. Needed seasoning. The sides are nothing special. Right out of a can or freezer bag . Instant potatoes, gravy, etc . Service was not good. Our waitress “ H “ was extremely new and needed more training. Basics like removing dirty plates from table . No server should ever go to the back of the house empty handed. Took three reminders to bring us water . At check time she disappears with our CC for 10 minutes? She clueless. Again…. It’s about training.
We eat here often, food and service has always been very good ...not so much tonight. Waitress was told several times no mushrooms due to an allergy. She brought out a piece of meat covered in mushrooms! We got our salads after she brought the food. Both meals were wrong. We'll give it another chance but it will be awhile
Ordered Prime Rib special with 2 sides & salad on Friday. The meat was nasty no flavor lots of fat. Looked as though it had been sitting for a while, cold food. Very surprised when I went to pay & told staff that I wanted to speak to manager or owner about meal. Lady who was server not mine came up & said no managers or owners here. She didn't want to make any adjustments on bill. Then she finally took 1 drink off. I haven't been here in over 3 years I doubt I will ever go back.
Blake's used to be really good but it has gone downhill. We went to eat recently and it was possibly the worst experience I have had there. Ordered the Chicken fried steak and it was mostly breading. The sweet potato fries were pretty good but the overall experience was still poor. Definitely not worth the money.
Haven’t been here in years. Family brought us back. Server was amazing. Food was just sad. Alaskan pollock had soggy spots & liver was burnt to a crisp. Two others had chicken fried steak which were overly salty & chewy. My family informed me they had never had a bad experience before & we’re surprised. We did overhear someone mention other complaints as well. Could be just one of those days.
Blake’s Cafe has such a cute nostalgic look and a charming old school vibe to the building. Unfortunately, my personal experience didn’t live up to the atmosphere. The service was slow and seemingly pretty cold, like the staff didn’t care much about being there or helping customers. It took a long time to get our food, and when it finally came, it was just okay. There was nothing bad, but definitely not something I’d be excited to come back for. It’s a shame because I used to like it here a couple of years ago I’m not sure what’s changed.
Food was good. Had large fried catfish. Glad I got large only had 4 pieces. Guess small is 1 piece. Wife had salad she was happy. Kinda hard to mess up lettuce. Service was ok. Never seen waitress after she took order. Had to ask for check. Drove an hour to get there would only return if in the area. But would drive on to Clear Springs next time
Went a couple weeks ago and had great service and meal was great. I took my husband last night and had such horrible service. It was busy yet but not one person came up to take order or even acknowledge us. I went to the hostess and asked who our waiter was. Still didn't trigger getting someone to wait on us. We ended up walking out after about 15 min with no service. The food was good the previous time( not great). Won't go back.
Disappointed. Had been there a couple of times previously. I decided to take a couple of our friends to celebrate my wedding anniversary. The four of us arrived just short of 6pm yesterday. It wasn't that crowded, and we were seated pretty quickly. First thing I noticed was that the table in some areas was a little sticky as if they had taken a second to run a dry cloth over it to just clear a few crumbs off of it. The waitress was friendly, but we all know that good service includes much more than putting on a friendly face. They had already run out of prime rib (only available on Fridays starting at 4--or until they run out). We eventually ordered sweet teas (3), water (1), 8oz sirloin steaks (3), fried zucchini (3), green beans (2), rice (1), chicken sandwich (1), & a side order of onion rings (1). Three of our four orders arrived in10-15min, and were brought out by someone other than our waitress. We had asked about the chicken sandwich and fried zucchini and were told she would check and get back to us. Unfortunately, it took awhile (only after we flagged them down) that they ended up giving us an update. Our regular waitress didn't regularly check back with us. The steaks were the size of a hamburger patty (and dry), and the rice was clumped and also dry. Three of us ended up finishing our meals before my wife received her chicken sandwich which was dry and tasteless. Our regular waitress eventually came back to give me the bill and ask how everything was. I felt like telling her, but I just said ok--to be polite. Then she gave me the near $90+ bill (before the 15% tip). Adding insult to injury--when I got to the register to pay, I was greated by the "oh by the way" we now charge a 4% service fee if you use a credit card. Maybe they need to post that at the entrance. Sorry, but I don't think I will go back again.
My Boyfriend and I showed up at about 4:30 on a Friday afternoon. Not busy at all, maybe 7 small parties (all already seated) in the restaurant. We walked in and were seated immediately. We ordered a half order of fried pickles, a burger, a BLT and 2 sweet teas. (I worked in the food industry for 2 years so I try to be patient). We received our drinks very quickly which was nice. It’s took 20 minutes for us to receive our order of fried pickles. It then took almost another 45 minutes for us to get our food. His burger was okay, but my BLT was 90% tomato, the bread was soggy from the amount of butter on it, and had a total of 2 1/2 pieces of bacon on it. The fries were great though. So if you like waiting over an hour for 2/10 food then this is the place for you. Will not be going back :)
Most great, caring restaurants read their reviews and will take the time to thank the reviewers if it’s a good review or apologize if it’s a bad one. Not this place. They don’t read their reviews and frankly they don’t care.
Walked in and sat there for 10 minutes, with workers walking by and no one said 1 thing to us about getting us seated. Another group came in and immediately got seated by the hostess. Not sure why we were completely ignored but it was really rude.
Walked in with my family at 11:30am to eat lunch with my family, staff could not be less interested in seating us despite us being 1 of 2 groups inside the entire restaurant. We waited 10 minutes to be addressed and left.
I ordered the chop steak, double fries, and garlic bread, today 11-2-2025, now i have visited this place 2 times before and every time they have forgotten or do not bring me my bread including today. On the menu it says 1/2 pound chop steak. Don’t believe it, it is small. My double fries looked more like a regular. The ice tea was 4 dollars. I will never, ever go back to this overpriced, overrated restaurant. I will tell everyone i know not to visit your place.
Been coming here for 12 years this is the first time all the food was nasty there was 6 of us. My liver was burnt as well as the gravy. Chicken Fried steak which has always been our favorite was too salty and chewy. Green beans were mushy and had no taste. Fish was not cooked all the way. I don’t understand what happened tonight.
