Opinions de Mother Mash Covent Garden London
Fantastic experience at Mother Mash – Covent Garden. Classic British comfort food done right. I ordered the steak pie and it was so good that I went back for a second helping — rich, full of flavour and packed with tender meat. Absolutely delicious and very satisfying. Portions are generous and the prices are extremely reasonable, especially for such a central location in London. Great value for money. Another big plus: no “coperto” or hidden charges. You only pay for what you order, with optional service tips if you wish — very fair and transparent. Fast service, casual atmosphere and consistently great food. A must-stop if you’re in Covent Garden and want proper British food without overpaying. Highly recommended.
Steak and Ale pie with Farmers gravy and cheesy mash was unbelievable. Was incredible tasty and the pastry was flakey. Sticky toffee pudding kind of tasted like a super sweet muffin. Got it with custard and wish I would’ve gotten it with ice cream. The custard just mixed in with the toffee syrup and couldn’t really taste it. Small space so recommend a reservation but they were taking walk ins! Great service
You know that moment when you’re traveling to a city, and you have one very specific craving in your head, something cozy, nostalgic, soul-warming, and you’re just hoping you’ll find the place that nails it? That was Mother Mash for me. And let me tell you… It delivered. I went with the Colcannon Mash, paired with the London Smokey main and traditional gravy, and it hit every single comfort-food receptor I was aiming for. Rich, hearty, indulgent in that very British “this will fix everything” kind of way. Exactly what I wanted after wandering London in the cold, questioning my life choices and footwear. The vibe is small, quaint, and cozy, and clearly everyone else agrees, because the place was packed. This is intimate dining in the best way, but that also means reservations are highly recommended unless you enjoy standing around fantasizing about gravy. Service was no-frills, fast-paced, and efficient, not the linger-for-hours type of spot, but honestly? Perfect. Food came out quickly, staff kept things moving, and after a long, chilly day exploring the city, that was exactly what I wanted. This is a great spot, whether you’re with family or friends and just need something that will hit the spot. I’d maybe skip it for larger groups, not because it isn’t welcoming, but because it’s delightfully small and best enjoyed without playing table Tetris. The price point was absolutely worth it for the quality, and I already know this will be a mandatory stop on my next trip to London. Final verdict: 10/10 - will be back to let the bangers fill me up and leave me needing a cigarette and a nap.
The pie was absolutely delicious, and the menu is clear and easy to navigate. The service was efficient and friendly. I chose the steak pie with colcannon mash and the onion sauce which was recommended by the lady serving us — it was wonderful. The cider was excellent as well. This place is a real treasure, and we will definitely come back.
If you want traditional English sausages and mash, or pie and mash, then book a table here. Friendly service, and the pies are just the right consistency. The puddings are also really nice - our guest raved about the sticky toffee pudding. Thank you.
Soooo good! I didn't have a reservation and waited about 20mins for a table for two. Honestly was so happy to even get a table! Highly recommend a reservation. The steak pie & "champ" mash were delicious. They also have great veg options. Our server was really friendly but very frazzled. We sat with empty glasses and no water until dessert. It was ok though because the food was good, and we understood it was really busy.
Coming all the way from Canada, we wanted to get a meat pie while we were in London. This was probably one of the better restaurants we visited. We were pleasantly surprised at how delicious the pie was. We ordered the steak pie with classic mash and chicken gravy and it was phenomenal. For dessert, we got the vegan friendly Apple and Blackberry Crumble which came with some ice cream. It was okay, I think we should have gotten the sticky toffee pudding instead. Would recommend a reservation since it got quite busy.
Absolutely incredible dining experience. Cozy atmosphere, hospitable owner, and great care go into the menu. Gluten free options clearly marked on the menu, and lots of them! We’ve been there twice in a week and planning another visit before we leave for home. Make sure to get the apple and blackberry crumble with ice cream AND custard for an absolute dream dessert.
Had a great time all thanks to lovely Safa who took very good care of me and my meal and deserve a very big raise. I was seated very fast in probably under 10 minutes despite the place being absolutely packed, and I got my food quite fast as well (I suspect microwave), but it was very tasty nonetheless. I had the spiced vegetable and brie pie with the cheese mash and onion gravy for £15.5 total, which isn’t shocking for central. None of the meat is halal, that was to be expected, but they have a large choice of vegetarian/vegan options. I was glad to finally try a british classic !! Safa, you’re a rockstar and you’re also very pretty !
Great food and great service. On our brief visit to London we went here twice. They got quite a few choices of mashed potato, sausages and gravy for you to choose from. I personally like their cumberland and london smokey sausage. The sticky toffee pudding is great too.
We went for a date night and it was an amazing experience. We really enjoyed the sausages and the pie with basically traditional smash and gravy, and a saucy chocolate dessert. It was really really good. We stayed for 3 days in London and this place just captivated our hearts. Can't wait the time to come back to enjoy a delightful meal like that again. Moreover, the staff was extremely kind, and although the restaurant is not that big, it felt really cozy and warm. Thanks for everything!
Loved this place! I am visiting London and wanted to try more traditional food like pies, mash, mushy peas, etc. but am vegetarian so didn’t seem likely. I was able to choose a vegetarian mash, pie, and gravy and get to have the perfect meal! We also got dessert but ate it too fast to get a picture :)
Great beef pie with mash and red wine/bacon gravy. We had one traditional mash and one sweet potato/carrot mash. We had to wait for 10 minutes during a dinner time crowd. The servers were very apologetic while we wait. Once we are seated, everything comes promptly. Other dinners are also happily chatting and having a jolly time.
We dined here 3 times while on our holiday in London and would have many more times had we found it sooner. Please don’t miss out on delicious exceptional food with superb service. The staff were welcoming, extremely attentive and good fun. We had the best time while enjoying the food. You can pick and choose your type of pie, mash, gravy and even add a sausage. There are several combinations you can try. My favorite was the traditional mince pie with cheese mash and onion gravy. However their special beef bourguignon pie is a must try! It was scrumptious.
English classics, pie/sausages and mash at Mother Mash. These dishes are sadly phasing out these days. Luckily Mother Mash is still going strong and a notable spot for tourists as well as locals. Obviously, if you know where to go there are pie mash shops about but again getting phased out. Not the first time I've been here but the sausage and pie options are better than a few years ago. Had the chicken sausage, veg sausage with cheesy mustard mash and chicken gravy. Simply comforting. Also got the bubble and gravy boat. More gravy would be nice. By default spoons and forks are the best utensils. This place is severely understaffed but you get served and fed eventually.
Classic British food done properly, and the service one of the best in the UK - staff was helpful and proactive with organising our birthday cake (that we bought from the bakery next door), they also made sure we had comfortable seats to wait before our table is ready since we arrived early. The best part is, no service charge added to the bill, so it actually made us want to tip, and we did! The restaurant was lively but not noisy at all. This is definitely a must-visit if you want a real good British pie and mash, served with positive energy from all the staff working there. We spent £146 for 7 people, including tips 🤯
Wow. Excellent steak pie. It had a lot of filling and the pie itself cooked to perfection. Everything was seasoned perfectly. Not to salty. I need to try the chicken pie and sausage and mash next time. Service was wonderful. Very nice and friendly.
Love the cauliflower cheese!! Chicken mushroom pie very delicious and my favorite gravy was the tradition one. Must try for local comfort food.
Fantastic find in the heart of Covent Garden. Booked 4 days ahead and so glad we did as it gets very busy. Brilliant service and the best pie and mash I've had.. I had the steak pie, horseradish mash, onion gravy and red cabbage.. Wow.. Will definitely be back when we are in London..
We come here every single time we’re in London! This time we got steak pie with classic gravy and oh my God! What a delight this is 🤯 As desert we got the apple crumble. Lovely service. I absolutely recommend!
Loved loved loved! Absolutely delicious with great service! I wish I had more time to go ahead before the end of our trip! Highly recommend, great selection and a happy vegetarian right here!!
Amazing food, both the bangers and pies were really delicious, and we cleaned our plates. The service is great, one of the best in our trip so far. Would recommend coming here for good British food, and will coming back again for more.
Really loved this place — we even came back to try other dishes! Everything was always excellent: incredibly tasty food and caring, attentive staff. Highly recommend! 🌟
Pie, Mash and Liquor! What's not to love about it? Hot, plentiful and Tastey! The Waiter suggested Vinegar to compliment the Liquor, wow, what a difference. Apple Crumble and Custard for Pudding, Mmmmm! Overall a great experience, the Staff were busy but nothing was too much trouble for them!
Food that warms your cockles. Charming, delightful atmosphere. Excellent, friendly service. Great 80s playlist for background music 🎶
Amazing food and service - proper nosh! Apple crumble and sticky toffee pud - brilliant way to finish off a great meal ! Service was brilliant as well!
If you visiting London you must try this place. Amazing place with delicious authentic UK food and a homely atmosphere. Very nice server who makes you feel welcome and puts the experience on a whole new level. Sticky toffee pudding with vanilla ice cream and custard was on point, and honesty was better than I expected. Overall it is a lovely place with comfort food, definitely will come back on my next London trip.
Mother Mash in Covent Garden was simply delicious well made food. There is a good variety of mash, pies, sausage and gravy. The food is served very hot. They’ll cater to allergies and dietary requirements (vegan and non dairy mashed). The atmosphere is very cozy playing a lot of classic jazz and soul music from the 1960s. The service is excellent from Olu, Darren, and Billie who will make you feel at home.
It was a really lovely place, The waitress was amazing, I love her enthusiasm, she made the experience. Food is excellent, it's not just sausage mash and gravy, no it's flavour and texture. This was high quality and well worth a visit. If you get a seat outside you can people watch too. As it was London you'd expect London prices, however the price was very reasonable
Great food, nice casual atmosphere, funny and engaging servers. This is an all around gem to experience if you happen to be in the area. Can make a reservation, but if you don't they'll still try to accommodate you. Just may have to wait a bit.
The Beef with Guinness pie and Chicken pie were both deliciously rich and flavorful. The creamy mash and savory gravy added to the comfort food experience. Top it all with good service!
Traditional British cuisine in an old school diner environment at great prices! Original set up whereby you choose the type of delicious mash you want first, then which types of sausages, or pies, you would like. I went for a variety of pork sausages (they allow you to mix and match)… all very good but I think the standard Cumberland was marginally the best. My father had the Steak pie and it was lovely too. The gravy is absolutely spot on - and again you get a great choice. In fact I’m sure it was the smell of the gravy when we walked in which first caught my attention! They cook with real butter as well which is sadly not that common anymore. Drinks selections are fantastic too, traditional zesty lemonade and proper Dorset ciders tasty and light… in fact “light” is a good way to describe all the food and drink..one would expect after after large plates of commonly regarded ‘heavy’ food to feel sluggish afterwards, but nope, on the contrary! Even the puddings (generous in portions and super tasty although not sure they’re home-made) didn’t make either of us feel like we had eaten too much! Particularly commendable was the service from the two ladies working there, Safa and Rosa. Safa was there to greet us and show as to our table. She did so in a helpful manner and a smile on her face. When we arrived in the queue, ahead of us, there was a tourist struggling to make a payment on the machine in which seemed like an eternity. Admittedly I was getting frustrated just watching the struggle (being hungry probably didn’t help) but I noted how Safa showed zero signs of any impatience herself and handled it very professionally with such positive energy. I’m not sure I could have done! In the end it was Rosa who served us who, again, had a very happy aura about her whilst simultaneously working hard to be as accommodating as possible. It was nice chatting with her briefly about her experiences in the restaurant and her home country. If I understood correctly they’re opening up a third branch which is great news, and shows customers enjoy it. There needs to be more establishments offering top tier British grub (clearly there is a demand for it). Shouldn’t be a rarity in what is Britain after all. My only complaint is that there is no ice available. I am told an incident at the other branch with the ice machine there could have something to do with that, but nonetheless a cold cider isn’t quite the same without it. In fairness Rosa offered to nip out and get some for me, a gesture that I did not take her up on but one that was certainly appreciated and would have been filed in the “going above and beyond “ customer satisfaction category! Next time we are in London, which doesn’t happen that often unfortunately, we would be sure to return.
If you're craving proper British comfort food in the heart of London, Mother Mash is the place. Tucked away on New Row in Covent Garden, it's a cosy little spot that does exactly what it says on the tin—mash, pies, sausages, and gravy, all done brilliantly. I had the classic mash with the roasted vegetable and chickpea pie, topped with veggie gravy. The mash was buttery and smooth, the pie had a lovely golden crust and a hearty filling, and the gravy tied it all together. My partner went for the cheddar mash with veggie sausages and was equally impressed—rich, comforting, and full of flavour. The menu lets you mix and match different mash styles, sausages, and gravies (don’t miss the onion or the veggie one), and the sides are worth exploring too—especially the red cabbage and cauliflower cheese.
My first time in London and I wanted to try some authentic English food — and this place absolutely exceeded all expectations! The waitresses were unbelievably kind, friendly and attentive, and the food was simply outstanding. Everything was perfect, I genuinely can’t think of a single negative thing to say. One small moment that really stood out to me (in the best possible way): they actually apologised because one of the beers on tap had run out and I had to wait a bit longer. As a Hungarian, that level of service was surprising and very much appreciated. An amazing experience overall — highly recommended to everyone visiting London!
We managed to secure a same day booking for 1PM - our train had been a little delayed arriving into London so we arrived at 1:10PM and were seated with no issues. We had a theatre booking for 2:30PM and I always worry about being late but no problems here - order was taken quickly, food arrived in plenty of time for us to actually enjoy it and still have plenty of time leftover to take a slow walk to the theatre. Food was delicious, I had the London Smokey sausage and also tried some of my friends steak and stilton pie, both were gorgeous. I thought the prices were incredibly reasonable. Waiting staff were truly some of the loveliest people I've ever met. Absolutely no faults at all, can't recommend enough.
The food is absolutely delicious! The pies were very flavorful and the mash is extremely smooth and soft. Gravy is excellent too. It gets pretty full so it’s best to make a reservation, we had to wait around 30-40mins for lunch
Tried this spot after the reco for their pie with mash and gravy 😗 Wanted to try some English staples The pie was a lot bigger than I thought but expected for the price. I got the mince meat and it was pretty heavy and super filling. The potato tastes good too but was way too much for me after the pie. The gravy and meat taste weee pretty subtle. Not sure if another one would have a stronger taste. 🤔 Also got the toffee sticky pudding and my gawd! Was delish. Prob best one I’ve had so far - at least better than USA and Japan The berry cider was also a huge hit. Kinda pricy but no regrets 🍻
Absolutely loved my visit to Mother Mash – Covent Garden! I had the steak & black heart stout pie with bubble & squeak mash and farmer’s gravy, and wow – it was next-level delicious. The pie was rich, hearty, and full of flavour, with the stout giving it a perfect depth. The bubble & squeak mash was creamy with just the right texture, and the farmer’s gravy tied everything together beautifully. Comfort food done right! The vibe of the place is cozy and welcoming, and the staff were super friendly. If you’re in Covent Garden and love classic British dishes with a twist, this is a must-visit. Already planning my next trip back!
I visited Mother Mash in Covent Garden today (a regular Tuesday), and I really feel the need to share what happened, not because of the food, which I genuinely love and order often, but because of how the place is being run. Even on a weekday the restaurant was packed with tourists, I even heard people speaking my native language, and it was obvious the team was completely overwhelmed. There were only two staff members on the floor for the whole room!! One, i think, was mainly handling bookings and payments, and the other, Safire, was the one actually running up and down between all the tables, basically keeping the entire service moving. And honestly, she was incredible. Despite the constant pressure, she stayed calm, kind, and fully present with every guest. She apologised for delays that weren’t her fault, fixed an order issue straight away (plus, offered us a side to apologise), and somehow managed to make us feel genuinely looked after while juggling far too much for one person. As someone who works in customer service myself, I know exactly what it looks like when an employee is carrying the room because the shift simply isn’t staffed properly. I also want to acknowledge the other girl on the floor, she was doing her part as well, but it was very clear that Safire was the one taking the full hit of the rush. She was basically managing everything almost by herself, and without her the whole service would have collapsed. This is mainly for the management: you cannot run a busy Covent Garden restaurant on TWO people. It’s unfair on the staff and it shows in the guest experience!. You’re extremely lucky to have someone like Safire, but she deserves proper support, better staffing, and real recognition for what she does. Safire is the reason I’d return. The staffing situation, however, seriously needs attention.
I had the Bubble & Squeak Mash with Steak & Black Heart Stout Pie and Farmer’s Gravy - it was tasty but could have been seasoned a bit more! My tablemate had the Sticky Sausage & Sweet Potato Salad with a side of mashed potatoes, which was also done perfectly. As it is quite popular we had waited about ten minutes for a two-top table, which was extremely close to another two-top, which again was really close to another two-top. Staff was friendly though. We would return as we liked it overall.
The booking system was easy to use. The food is just what you would expect, traditional British food. Not the tastiest in the world but interesting experience. The staff was nice but they were clearly understaffed. We saw only two waitresses serving all tables in the restaurant and they were busy running around, not easy to get their attention. It’s 20 degrees outside but inside the restaurant it was quite a bit hot and stuffy, even though we were seated by the window. If you haven’t been there, no harm give it a try. At least better than many other outlets nearby that clearly target at tourists. But we are unlikely to visit again in near future.
Overall an enjoyable and good value meal. British comfort food done well. Don’t be put off by the pale looking sausages from other reviews as we almost were! Service was the biggest contention point of our visit (understaffed) Atmosphere: A good atmosphere. We were sat in a booth that was nice. Moderate noise level but could clearly hear each other. Recommend to book ahead as was busy on a Tuesday 6:15pm. Service: Sadly the restaurant was clearly understaffed and struggled to cope as a result. Took 5 minutes standing at the door before we were finally seated with a wait before ordering. Hats off to our waitress Safa who appeared to be running the place on her own (she was joined by one other staff member who was notably useless to be honest - we weren’t sure what she was doing. An evening of standing about and taking a few payments whilst our waitresses appeared to do everything). Safa was so friendly and apologetic about the delays. She was serving almost every table, cleaning them, seating everyone. Credit where credit is due. We felt very sorry for her and thank her for her hard work. Food review: - Colgannon mash (10/10) - Very creamy - Bubble & Squeak (8/10) - Less creamy version of the Colgannon mash. Would order Colgannon if you like a smooth creamy texture. - All sausages were a very good size but really need to be browned more. Very anaemic looking at times which almost put us off - Cumberland (9/10) - Pork and chilli (7/10) - London Smokey (6.5/10) - Pies were very popular. Almost every other diner in the resturant got a pie. We tried the chicken and bacon which was lovely. Pastry was cooked well. (9/10) - Sides. Don’t order the Creamed spinach. Watery and not great. Gravy: In order of deliciousness 1. Onion 2. Farmers 3. Traditional Recommendation to restaurant: 1) Brown the sausages more. Pictures sometimes look almost raw from other reviews. Some of ours looked questionably pale before we covered in gravy. 2) Make sure there is adequate staffing
The pies, mash and sausages were really delicious. The service was friendly and fairly quick. The place is very busy and noisy, so it’s not ideal for a relaxed sit-down.
Second visit to Mother Mash after going to their other location. I have to say I prefer the other location over this one, though it was still good. Indulged on the special pie (steak and Stilton), cheddar and mustard mash, and the farmer’s gravy. Finishes the meal with sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. The service was a little lackluster as we watched the wait staff vape while sitting in a chair in the outdoor eating area we were sitting in…. The food overall was good, but the pudding was a tad dried out. I still recommend Mother Mash, but I might prioritize the other location which isn’t far away.
I had champ mash and the steak & blackheart stout pie with traditional gravy! The gravy was perfectly seasoned as was the pie. And my server was such a sweetheart. Perfect last meal in London!
The food is delicious. some great comfort British food. Service however, wasn't great. The place is severely understaffed and it took way too long to get our orders taken and for the food to be served. We sat near the staircase leading to the kitchen and heard the bell ring multiple times before the food was collected and served to our table. Food arrived lukewarm at best. Moreover, the servers were not very systematic and we noticed that orders for other tables/food were sorted out before us, even though we were first to arrive. I would definitely come back for a takeaway but not so to dine in.
Just want to start it off by saying this place would probably be 10 times better if they had maybe one more waiting staff on the job. After we were seated it took them a good 20 minutes to get our food and drink order. The vibe in the restaurant is cool, really takes you back to the classic pie and mash shops you have growing up. I ordered bubble and squeak and got given mash, but the food took so long I didn’t want to send it back. We were really tight for time getting to our show. One of the waitresses was nice but the other seemed like she didn’t want to be there. Maybe that’s part of the classic pie and mash vibe they want to go for. I would definitely get takeaway if they do that, but I wouldn’t risk going here if you have a show booked.
Chose this place because you'd think a specialist venue would be great at what they do. Service was very slow and inattentive. Sausages were edible but nothing special, mash was revolting with a sour taste. Any of the pubs nearby would offer much better bangers and mash. The atmosphere is more modern than traditional (Cindy Lauper playing on my visit) which is a matter of taste. There were small flies hovering around the drain and our table (see photo). Don't recommend.
I really don’t understand the reviews. We traveled 30 mins specifically to go here. The mash was absolutely horrid. It has a sour taste and we had theee different kinds so I don’t imagine it is one in particular. It tasted off. Also took an incredibly long time for the food. They gave me a 10% discount when I said mash tastes off but that simply wasn’t enough. The sausages were fine but not amazing same with the pie. Go elsewhere.
Honestly, I don't normally write a negative review but the service in this restaurant was poor. The wine was abysmal and they wouldn't even sell us a bottle of any wine, only a carafe. I found this amazing because presumably they would have to open a bottle to get it in the carafe. Makes you realise why the wine was off. Really, there are fabulous in places to visit only a few doors away. I think the positive reviews for this establishment are visitors outside of London who don't know how fabulous a pie can be. The pie here was distinctively average. The pastry in this shop was shop bought and the gravy was tasteless. But the service was so bad even the servers said they were surprised we were relatively smiley. Save your cash. Loads of better places to eat. Khalid and his leopard print with purple haired sidekick were really terrible, rudeness that they really tried to achieve.
