We were traveling from SF and got some take out from Din Tai Fung. Bad idea! The next day we got some take out from Dan Modern. Very good!! Everything was made with minimum msg and very flavorful. The owners are super nice. Xiao long bao - 5 stars. Juicy, fresh, super good. You can see the little twist on top which signifies quality Crab fried rice - good amount of crab in each bite. The short grain rice was good quality and springy. Short rib beef noodle - hand made udon width thick noodle, slightly sweet and savory with lots of short rib.
hey foodie fam, are you craving for Chinese food? We recently stumbled upon a new Chinese restaurant in the Sawtelle area. It’s called Dan Modern Chinese, featuring hand-made dumplings 🥟 and noodles 🍜, wok-fried rice 🍛, vegetables 🥦 and other delicious delicacies. Our fav was the short rib dan mein for the chewy noodles 🍜 and tender meat 🥩. Another hit was the dungeness crab fried rice 🦀🍛. So yummy 😋 • 🍜 Short Rib Dan Mein 🍲 Oxtail Noodle Soup 🦀 Dungeness Crab Fried Rice 🥟 Xiao Long Bao
Love this Taiwanese food restaurant! My fave is the pork chop fried rice and soup-filled xiaolongbao. The pork chop was juicy and tender, the fried rice nicely plain, and the xiaolongbao bursting with flavor! The staff were all so nice and the service was great. We ate outside but stayed warm thanks to their outdoor heaters. The three cup chicken also recommended.
For an authentic Chinese culinary experience, DAN is your place. The food is full of flavor and made with integrity. My favorite dish tonight and the star of the show, Shrimp in Crab Sauce. William the server is an absolute star. Attentive and friendly while ensuring your experience from start to finish is perfect.
wow paublo was amazing the BEST busser i've ever seen HE DESERVES SERVER POSITION EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS PLACE IS AMAZING THE BATHROOM THE SERVICE THE FOOD THE FOOD CAME OUT SO FAST despite it being dinner rush
So good. Ordered delivery: green beans, pork dumplings, dan lo mein, and chicken noodle soup. No notes, all delicious!!
I love their short rib Dan Mein, spicy pork Xiao Long Bao and garlic green beans so much that it’s all I ordered for awhile. Then I brought more people and we finally branched out and tried more stuff. Great place, nice vibe , simple menu
Excellent dumpling selection- love pan fried and crispy options. Soup dumplings are also good. Not that many choices on the Westside for fresh quality Chinese. Highly recommend! One suggestion is to have a little bit more focus on prompt service. Glad to support a restaurant that fed firefighters and first responders during the wildfires! Thank you.
This review is mainly about how AMAZING the service was with Zander. My friend was visiting from out of state, and I hadn't seen her in forever! She was craving soup dumplings, so we decided to try this place. From the moment we sat down, the service was impeccable. Zander's personality, energy, and attitude really set the stage for a great girl's night. He made great recommendations. It was also like he was psychic, talking about bringing chili oil a few seconds before I was going to ask. The short rib noodles were great, and we tried multiple soup dumplings with flavorful broth. Another highlight was the bok choy. I still cannot fathom how they got SO MUCH FLAVOR (especially garlic flavor, yum) into the simple bok choy. The food was delicious, but the highlight was our service. Our wine glasses and water glasses never went empty. The food was delicious, but the highlight that really made the evening was Zander. I will definitely be coming back to see him. FYI: For some reason, the review keeps changing my individual star ratings to zero. SERVICE AND ATMOSPHERE WERE DEFINITELY 5 STARS.
I had a quick business lunch with a client here, they recommended and ’m so glad they did. The scallion pancake is out of this world, and the soup dumplings make me regret not having tried them earlier. If you’ve never been here before you have to come. It’s some of the best Chinese food I’ve had in Los Angeles.
This place is very good! They have some very yummy soup dumpling. Their noodles are also amazing! This is a great place to share lot of different plates with friends.
Authentic Hand Made Steamed Pork Dumplings. Very tasty food with great service. Very flavorful. They have brown rice.
Wow, I’ve been looking for Chinese food in LA and this is the best I’ve had so far! The restaurant has an elevated vibe, but is serving up some classic Chinese dishes that feel authentic. The short rib noodles were my favorite & the garlic green beans are simple but so delightful. Can’t go wrong with any of the dumplings, but the spicy pork soup dumplings really hit the spot! Ask for sides of sauce they have all different kids and will let you try them all. Staff is great and prices are also fair. You have to come here if you’re looking for delicious & cozy Chinese food!
Amazing service and even better food. Xander was an outstanding server and a soul reason we will be back! The green beans are AMAZING. 15/10. So rich with favorite and cooked to perfection. Cucumbers are fabulous, the tofu pork, popcorn chicken, and chicken fried rice. I absolutely love that they are gluten free friendly! We will be back!
Pork Xiao Long bao and beef noodles were amazing. Restaurant filled up fast at 6pm. Service was quick and efficient!
Dan modern Chinese was a pleasant surprise as the person who brought me told me it was better then din tai fung. It was not as good but the food was solid, the dumplings were great and so was the salt and pepper beef. Would come here with a date or a friend for a casual meal.
TRY BEEF ROLL. Beef roll is my favorite at dan modern and cannot stop thinking about it 🤤 It’s got unique flavor & texture and I just love it. If you crave high quality Asian-fusion cuisine, this is the place. Food is great. I recommend their menu with short rib bc it just melts in your mouth - I can tell they use fresh and high quality ingredients. Dumplings and noodles are also great (how can they not be; they’re handmade!) Overall 5/5 restaurant. Price is also reasonable and Sawtelle vibe is so nice!
Listennn, everything we ordered was bomb! My favorite was the short rib noodles and the green beans! Everything tasted so fresh and well seasoned! Our waiter was also super nice and I would go back again. I also love that this strip of eateries has a little bit of everything, there was even dessert a short walk down the street. I think this strip of restaurants is great for a night out with friends or even date night! The parking was a little crazy, but there are lots and street meters that you can park at pretty easily. You may have a little bit of a walk, though, but it wasn’t too bad!
Really good, everything we had! I want more and will come for more. The veggie noodles and fried rice are vegan and super delicious. My new favorite noodle place! Also the vegetable by itself was really well done to perfection. Thank you for a great lunch.
Great casual dining with delicious food! Personally I’m not a huge fan of their XLB (maybe I’m weird) BUT the rest of the menu items are yummmmmmy 🥹!!! My go to favorites are the popcorn shrimp with spicy mayo (ordered that today) , fried tofu appetizer, chicken noodle soup, oxtail noodle soup (this one is really bomb 💣), crab fried rice (ignore the appearance of my rice. I requested no onions lol.. I know plain jane). Overall I do highly recommend visiting!

2nd time visited a different location. Food tastes and quality were the same. This time ate oxtail noodle soup and it was my style. The broth was perfect. After a day of drinking alcohol, if you need same soup for your stomach try to it
I randomly found this place when I was in the area. The restaurant itself is very cute and clean. The service was superb, we got seated right away and got our water right away. We ordered the noodles, XLB and popcorn chicken and cucumber salad. The XLB was so juicy and I didn’t expect a stream to shoot out from my mouth from the first bite into the XLB. Thankfully I didn’t hit anyone with the XLB juice. I will be back to try other dishes.
We tried pepper beef (very tender, a little spicy), chicken in three cup sauce (very tender), oxtail soup, chicken noodle soup (some pieces of chicken were a little tough), chicken dumplings in chili oil (spicy), baby bok choy, green beans, and egg fried rice. Everything was delicious! Will definitely order from here again. Price range was $30-$50 per person. Update: The first time you place an order using their app, they offer a discount. However, I couldn’t get the discount until I deleted my account that was automatically created after my first order on the website (not the app). You also earn “dan dollars” that you can use as credit on future orders.
Great spot for apps and full meals. I love the crispy dumplings and the scallion pancakes, you have to try them if you never have. The soup dumpling are out of this world and you can taste the handmade freshness of everything on the menu.

It was okay, but felt a bit heavy handed. The xiaolong bao are clearly the thing to get here, but the sauce for the gyoza was a complete miss. The combination of soy sauce and sriracha is just so primitive and doesn't belong on a serious menu. The noodles with beef screamed takeout, and the beef was fatty.
I came here for lunch. They have ‘lunch portion’ items in the menu, which were pretty decent deal. The Dungeness crab fried rice is 👍👍 I tried the XLB dumpling, pork and Dungeness crab. The crab was slightly scaly. The dumpling can use a little bit more flavor. I did not feel I tasted as much of the crab. Otherwise it wan’t bad. I also tried the ox tail noodle soup. It was a bit bland. I was not too impressed with this item. Maybe the spicy version can be better one.. Still not bad for ordering 3 items my bill comes out to $32 before tip. Pretty good.
Tried out dan with a friend for lunch. We came in right around when they opened, so we were one of the first few sat. We ordered: XLB pork crispy pork shrimp dumpling 1 dan short rib noodle 1 string bean The flavors were all there. The best way to describe dan is similar to Din Tai Fung. Although the flavors are similar, they were slightly different in its own way. I did enjoy the dan short rib noodle, which is something that DTF doesn't offer. Overall, meal was good. Ambiance is nice. Dan is a good option if you want something a smidge cheaper than DTF and without waiting super long lines. Street/metered parking only I believe.
Love their crab fried rice and soup dumplings. Stir fry vegetable is on the sweet side, but they do have pea leaves, which is hard to find most time of the year.
Food and wine selection were incredible. I got the short rib dan mein noodles. The short rib was cooked perfectly and the noodles were garlicky and delicious. The ambiance was lacking (I think this is a newer restaurant?) and the service was lacking - no one to greet/directions on where to sit, and was never served a glass of water. That said, with a few simple changes, I think this could be a great restaurant!
Tried Dan Modern Chinese and ordered the sautéed string beans with garlic, oxtail beef noodle soup, and pork chop fried rice. Everything was tasty, the staff was super friendly, and the ambiance was relaxed. That said, for Chinese food and the portion sizes, it felt a bit overpriced. Still, I’d recommend it!
Overall, a good experience! Good tasting dim sum, especially the soup dumplings. The pan fried dumplings are unique, but its just dumplings with a crunchy bed of some sort that doesn’t taste like anything. I would totally recommend getting the short rib dan mein noodles, that was the best thing we ordered in my opinion. I wish they had more selection of dumplings. Its a cute place to get basic dumplings and good noodles, but its not a true, authentic Chinese dim sum place. Great costumer service and fast service.
The soup dumplings here are delicious! I also love the spicy cucumbers and rice. The service is attentive, and the ambiance is great. It gets very busy on weekends, but it's worth the wait.

The food at Dan Modern Chinese is tasty and consistent (have ordered takeout & dine-in for 3+ years now). Often bring out-of-town guests to Dan when they visit and they always love it (and ask for another meal from Dan if they return). Personal favorites (order every time): - pickled cucumber - vegetable dan mein (great for anyone that loves a thick noodle) If you want meat + noodle, consider ordering chicken or veggie noodle and then a separate order of meat (like three cup chicken or beef w/ broccoli). The amount of meat given with the noodles isn't to satisfy. Recently tried and plan to order again: - dan dan noodle w/ pork (spicy and delicious!) - beef w/ broccoli Honorable mentions: - pan fried chicken dumplings - three cup chicken - pea sprouts - snow pea leaves Items I discourage people from ordering: - scallion pancake Portions aren't massive so some might be disappointed, but highly suggest going with a couple people and sharing a few plates!
I think the service was good and they are clearly working very hard to help you here. I’m not a huge fan of how much drier and colder the food came out than I’m used to in Chinese cuisine. I think it would probably be good for people who don’t like very much seasoning, have a strong sweet tooth, and don’t like their food to be hot when it comes out.

Instagram: @eat_saw_telle Eat: seaweed and tofu salad, pork and shrimp xiao long bao, pork and crab xiao long bao, vegetable dumplings, pork dumplings, short rib dan mien, chicken dan mien, baby bok choy Saw: use your noodle, bok choice, dumpling scroll, roc and a hard place, pillow dough Tell(e): 7.54/ 10 Hi-bite: Short Rib Dan Mien Lo-bite: Vegetable Dumplings
The service is really great and we were seated immediately, but unfortunately the food wasn’t very good. Almost everything was under salted and lacking flavor. Egg fried rice- needed white pepper. Way too small of a portion. Dan mien - way too sweet, needed more soy (the vegetables were nice though) Pan fried dumplings- not good. Needed more salt in the filling, the wrapper was not strong enough to withstand the fry. The dipping sauce is completely wrong (too think, I think they used raw oyster sauce?) Chili oil dumplings- again, filling lacking flavor and under salted. Should be served in a bowl to soak up more flavor. Popcorn chicken- really bad. Tasted like frozen, needed salt, needed a second or third fry. Was soggy. soup dumplings- should be served with vinegar dipping sauce too. This was OK.
I saw a movie at 3rd St. Promenade with some friends, and afterwards, we decided to get some Chinese food. We ended up choosing this spot to see what all the fuss was about. From the get-go, we noticed the menu is heavily skewed towards vegetarian options, with only a few meat dishes scattered about. I decided to try the chicken dan mein, which is their version of chicken chow mein, albeit with noodles that looked like they might be auditioning for a role in a thick pasta commercial. When the food arrived, it was the culinary equivalent of a 'meh' emoji. The chicken dan mein was fine—if by "fine" you mean it was as memorable as a random Tuesday. The noodles were indeed thicker, which I suppose could be a plus if you’re into that sort of thing, but the flavor was about as exciting as a conference call. The service was also on the 'blah' side of average. Our server was around, and they did the job, but it felt like their heart wasn’t entirely in it. Not that I blame them; it’s tough to be enthusiastic about food that doesn’t quite hit the mark. The ambiance? It was what you’d expect from a standard LA eatery—polished but lacking any real personality. It was as though someone took all the typical LA restaurant clichés, rolled them into one, and called it a day. Nothing about it made me think, "Wow, I want to come back here just to soak up this atmosphere." Now, let’s talk parking. Or rather, let’s talk about the elusive quest for parking. Since the restaurant is on a street with zero available parking spots, finding a place to leave your car felt like competing in an Olympic sport. We had to circle around and settle for a spot several blocks away, keeping a hawk-like eye on the street signs to avoid the dreaded parking ticket. All things considered, this place didn’t offer anything remarkable enough to make me want to return. It was like a forgettable first date—fine in theory but lacking the spark to make it memorable.

Shiitake mushrooms in noodles were amazing but rest of the dish was very greasy and heavy. Dumplings were good crispy. Scallion pancakes were underwhelming. Nice interior
Would of gave it a 5 star if they weren't rude . I wasn't done eating and the waiter came to charge me and waited until I paid on the portable machine. Stood waiting , so shocked. I didn't even ask for the bill. What if i wanted to order more ? It 6:09 pm I get it that there busy but it not the way. I came first people have to wait .
Worst location, too busy service sucks. No parking. Overpriced. Zero help when trying to pickup my order. They told 20-30 more minutes 2 times already…. Still just waiting and hungey
I had read about the scallion pancakes & How light and airy they were So I was very excited to try Dans modern Chinese restaurant. I have had Japanesescallion pancakes At many other restaurants before. So I can’t tell you how excited I was. We spent $75 on dinner for 2, To take out. We had the crab& pork soup dumplings & The chicken & shrimp steamed dumplings 2 Orders of scallion pancakes & Beef short rib Dan Mein noodles. & pork Dan noodles Pretty much everything was a miss, The dumplings had absolutely no taste of shrimp or crab in them & The soup dumplings Had a very thick skin on top that was almost unchewable! (Especially when their menu brags about the tender, thin skin, the dumplings have) I ended up removing the outer dough & Just ate the insides. I couldn’t even find traces of crab or shrimp in either ones! The beef, short ribs were Extremely hard to chew!!! At least they were lean, But short ribs cooked properly should be tender & soft. Whereas, these were definitely improperly cooked & Hard as rocks. The good things, The homemade noodles were very tender & You could tell they were homemade. Both of the sauces for the noodles were delicious.(the portions were half of what most restaurants serve) Oscar, took our order was very kind & courteous. Taking time answer my questions. My biggest disappointment, however, was the scallion pancakes. They were hard as rocks & you needed a magnifying glass to find the teeny tiny pieces of scallions! I could not even bite a piece off (that’s how hard they were) Maybe they were busy or had a new cook but I was extremely disappointed, & they did NOT stand up to the wonderful reviews that I had read.
They will make you wait for your food for a looooong time. They had some other orders ready right by the door getting cold while making others wait for their order. Pretty bad organization. I waited for like 30 minutes for my food.
