My parents are regulars here, and I’ve joined them several times. The food is always fresh, and the service is always excellent. On our most recent visit, even though the kitchen was running a bit behind, our server kept us updated and made sure we felt taken care of. Our favorite sushi rolls are the Jenny and the Executive Suite
Update We just had an even better experience. Ryan and Hannah are the best! I was about to tell Hannah about my daughter's allergies when she asked us. She was extremely concerned. Ryan the manager comes out with our food. He said it took a bit longer to make sure there was no cross contamination and they were extremely careful after they heard that another Tsunami didn't care and weren't careful about the allergies and we ended up in the hospital. Hands down the best Tsunami, with the most caring and concerned people working there! We already had heard they were the most allergy friendly and we have no doubts about it. Thank you so much Ryan and Hannah!!! This is my brother-in-law's and my sister's favorite place for sushi. I never went since I hated the name. My brother-in-law said this sushi is better than what he can get in California which says a lot. He said he wanted sushi so we went. We were highly disappointed they didn't the spider roll. We both wanted it. Now a bit of negative, I didn't love the vegetable tempura. I've had better. The cucumber salad needed to be in the seasoning for a bit longer to get the taste on the cucumber. I'm a cucumber lover and I grew up eating my Japanese neighbor's cucumber salad. I was very impressed that all the fish is wild so my daughter can have it and that sold me on this place for sure! The server (Blythe) was so kind, patient and amazing with all of us. She was excellent! The food was great too. As my husband puts it, it will be in our rotation of places to go.
Why have I never been to Tsunami? Well, I am not a Sushi fan but let me tell you the other items they have are incredible. Boneless Short Rib was amazing. Not sure my review will help this place as by the time we left I think every seat in the house was full. Well done. Will be back.
The food was great. Our server Teagen was so sweet. Will definitely come back.
We always enjoy coming to Tsunami. The food is always great, they have a good variety on their menu and their sushi is one of the best in town. We also like their reward program that they have which makes us come even more often. This one of the restaurants that we like to keep in our rotation. We have been here for lunch and dinner and the service is always great. Their booths are also very comfortable. I just wish they opened Mondays since we love coming here so much! Great place to check out.
It's my first Japanese restaurant in Utah. I like bake roles Vegas. Not bad cocktail Dragon. Miso soup like for me was little bit salty. I can compare only with Ukrainian Japanese restaurants. We celebrated my birthday at Friday evening. It was busy place at that time, we ordered place for advance. It surprised me that that here in restaurants they use plastic cups, bowls.
I went here on Friday evening. It was full. They are able to seat people quickly even though there was a waiting list. The sushi bar offered fish that many Salt Lake City locations do not. I enjoyed speaking with the sushi chefs that were nearby. I would recommend this restaurant for sure. Try the whole aji offered on the sushi menu. Great presentation and delicious
The sushi was great. I loved it here. I had such a great time eating all my sushi. The iced coffee came in a can which was kind of weird, but it still tasted really good. The sushi itself was great. I tried to use chopsticks, but ailed. The fish was really good, the shrimp and eel were also really good. It wasn't that expensive either, moderately priced for sushi and the quality for the price was great. The desert was also delicious. I would recommend the blueberry cheesecake or the toffee cheesecake. I also love the fact that it was a nut-free facility so I didn't have to worry about getting an allergic reaction.
Solid choice for a great sushi lunch or dinner. Always great service and atmosphere. Short ribs appetizer is excellent. Excellent selection of specialty rolls!
Great food, especially good varieties with the dinner combos. The tempura vegetables with the combos taste great, as well as the miso and salad. Good quality with the fish in the sushi. I would just like to see greater options with nigiri and sashimi.
My husband and I haven't been since they closed the one in sugar house. We love the food. They have our favorite sushi still. We also had the mussel shooters. Absolutely fantastic. The quail egg at the end added a pop and sauce to the dish. Thank you for a great lunch.
The Amaebi was Amazing We told our server we love to say compliments to the chef but he never came out. Our server said he was new and it was Amazing that he made it for us. We agreed! Wish we could have met our chef maybe next time. The atmosphere is relaxing and fun. Our server was very nice and maybe we overwhelmed them by ordering so much food . I only gave 4star because I was drinking water out of my husband's glass. Other than that it was a wonderful time.
Love it. We stay at the bar and had great time. The service was quick and they brought the food about fast. The sushi not only tastes great but also looks great. I never realized why the spider roll was named such until I had it here.
Tsunami is always one of my favorite date night haunts. Union heights is a great space with awesome service and chefs who know exactly what they’re doing. The food at any tsunami location is consistently good, and it is especially so at this location. I always end up wanting to order more even when I’m completely full. Our server was very sweet and quick. We were seated maybe two or three minutes after arrival as well. Just a well run and delicious restaurant. My favorite sushi in Utah hands down.
We usually get great food. There has been 1 or 2 times it wasn't amazing but it usually is. We went early so it wasn't busy. We have been to this location lots of times. We like Light Rice on all rolls! It's a must. Executive suite Buddha Something tropical Da Heck Tipped with habanero salt (for me!) It's what we like.
This place has a low key atmosphere where one can sit back, relax and enjoy a Japanese meal that looks and tastes as it should. You will pay moderately for food but it is very authentic. Be prepared to be well taken care of a be bring $$ I typically spend $100 per person for a meal. Worth every penny. Enjoy.
The food was really good and served in a timely manner. It was moderately busy and had a lively atmosphere but well staffed. The decor was pretty too and the bar was amazing. I got the galbi short ribs as an entree that came with a spicy and delicious red pepper sauce. There were also some crunchy tempura veggies, delicious miso soup (enhanced with enoki mushrooms) crunchy shredded pickled carrots and spicy pickled cucumbers that came with it.
Our server Blythe was incredible! We planned on coming here as I have a Gluten Intolerance and heard about their GF menu. It was delightful. There were multiple options for both plates and sushi, they had tamari, teriyaki, and even brownies!!! I got a GF rainbow roll, teriyaki skewers, and 1 brownie with 2 to go because it was so yummy! Loved this place for GF options specifically!
Excellent food and service tonight. Great private room for our product training tonight. My only complaint was it was a bit too loud. Even with the private room and away from the main dining room. I would suggest closing that staircase to the private dining room so you don't hear the entire restaurant noise, down below. But, Happy staff afterwards made it all worth while. They also provided a TV which was nice for our slideshow. My educator didn't have to bring a screen or projector with her from Portland.. That's a huge time saver in itself. Also less headache and stuff we had to carry in.
Great friendly sushi place! The prices were reasonable with lots of seating. They have sushi bar seating as well as seating at their normal drink bar as well.
If you actually like sushi, don’t kid yourself with anything else. Just get the large sashimi and thank me later. Some of the best sashimi I’ve had in ages. The rolls are good as well. But trust me on just the fish !
Pros: -decent prices - good location -nice atmosphere -little wait time on meal(I ordered 4 rolls) Cons: -parking Went here for lunch with family (3) at around 1pm. No wait time although if you call for reservation ( they only reserve 1 hour in advance *note) was greeted by Deanna nice lady who sat us at a booth table (I chose it). Almost immediately Jill (Experienced) was with Jill (New person asian) they greeted us and told us about the specials and asked us if the we had any questions on the menu. ME being in sushi restaurants always asking how much sushi is per roll. Jill (XP) answered it swiftly. We ordered 4 sushi rolls a miso soup and bento box and not even 10 mins has passed food comes out all nice and present. Water glasses were always filled. Although I didn't appreciate Jill (xP) moving stuff in our table without saying a word to me that spoke body language of Haste and rush. And that's something I don't like especially in a sushi restaurant. After we finished our meal mom still eating jill (asian) asked if I wanted more rolls politely declined and Jill (xP) without saying a word takes our done dishes and leaves moms to finish I broke the ice and asked if she wanted to take these unused dishes she said yeah. I'm sure she has good intentions though.. And the Jill (asian) was doing well too! Overall all experience I love this place atmosphere is nice and clean that Asian feel. Recommend Level 10! Try the House rolls their good for feels~ personally the dragon did it for me
This is one of my absolute favorite sushi places! My wife and I love the Shrimp Poppers as an appetizer and the Nagimi (steak with onions), then we always order the 2 Executive suite rolls and the 2 Cocabana rolls. So good!
The food was excellent and the best we have ever had. The Sushi Chef was very friendly and easy to talk to about your favorites. The service staff was friendly and attentive to our needs who continually checked on us. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys Japanese food or Sushi.
Went in tonight for the first time and Jamie took great care of us. We got our food in a few rounds, which is how we ordered it. Everything tasted great and fresh. The salmon belly was so melt in your mouth. Jamie was consistent and made sure we had everything we needed for our meal. I’ve been looking for a good sushi place nearby and it may just be my new place.
This is the best spot for the freshest sushi in SLC, and I'll stand by that. It hits every time. Such incredible roll options, all of them unique, delicious and fresh. You truly cannot go wrong. Give this place a try, you'll be so happy you did!
We love to get the Tempura Shrimp and Vegetables then lots of appetizers. Our overall favorite is the Negima, rolls of heavenly prepared steak wrapped around asparagus in the most devine sweet teriyaki sauce, so delicious! We go here for birthdays, shopping days, friend days and woke up this morning celebrations. Find your own reason and just GO. You’ll be glad you did. Remember to make a reservation and they’ll get you right in.
Did enjoy coming here having a few drinks, shared a few plates and rolls with family. The way service ran was a bit interesting, I think our server was new where things took awhile But he was friendly and trying and other servers jumped in and helped make sure the guest experience was taken care of! Definitely will be back again and wanting to try different rolls
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Good food, slower start, but stellar service turned it around We visited Tsunami in the Fort Union area recently and had a bit of a rocky start. We arrived during a shift change, and unfortunately we got a little lost in the process. We waited nearly 20 minutes just to get water, and had to ask multiple times for a physical menu. It was a frustrating start, especially since I was hungry and feeling a bit impatient. But here’s where the team really impressed us: one of their servers, Adi, overheard my comment that I wasn’t a happy camper and even though her shift was done and she was wrapping up and preparing to leave, she jumped back into action without hesitation. She took our order promptly and helped reset the tone of the whole experience. Our server Lance was also incredibly kind and attentive throughout our meal and their Manager Tyler went out of his way to ensure we felt cared for and well taken care of. Despite the rough beginning, their team turned it around with genuine hospitality and attention to detail. The food was good (as always), and we left feeling heard and appreciated. Thank you to Adi, Lance, and Tyler for going above and beyond. We’ll definitely be back!
We had a fantastic experience at tsunami tonight. The manager Ryan could not have been more helpful and kind. And our server, (wish I could remember her name). Was fantastic as well
Kevin! Theeee BEST server! When you go request him and you will not be disappointed! He is knowledgeable, quick, personable, attentive and cheerful! Thank you Kevin for making all of our visits worthwhile. The food is amazing! Such great quality! Cons, this location, is old and outdated. The restrooms are gross and need to be cleaned and remodeled. And the manager looks grumpy and doesn’t look pleasant. We go to see Kevin and the food ofc!
Kevin Anderson has been our server several times. He is so upbeat and always smiling. Always goes the extra mile to make sure our order is correct. Best server there.
I've been coming here for the past 6 years. As someone with a severe peanut and nut allergy, I don't have many options for restaurants that are completely free of nuts/peanuts with zero fear of possible cross contamination. My husband and I come here for every special occasion (they are on the pricey side) and we always have a great experience. The food is always fresh, delicious, and well worth the money. I don't have another point of reference for sushi since I have never been able to have sushi anywhere else, so I can't say it's better or worse than another restaurant. It's the only sushi I've ever had and I love it. However, my husband doesn't have a peanut or nut allergy and he says the highest quality sushi he's had, he wishes the price was a bit less expensive, but it's worth it if we can enjoy sushi together at a nice restaurant. I highly recommend Tsunami to everyone, especially those who also have peanut and nut allergies. I wish there were more dedicated nut free facilities and restaurants here in Utah.
5 stars for a couple servers and the food. Tonight 12/13/25 we had an interesting experience with one of the waitresses. She was slow, forgetful and just not great. We started the night ordering our meals on a double date. I told her to put the food on separate tabs, she didn’t until the end and took forever to split the tables. She was off putting. I tipped 10% not because I am young but because she was so bad. She came back to gave us our to go box and was pissed that we tipped a low amount. Threw the box and said here you go and then started to angry clean the table up. Tattoos and curly hair didn’t catch her name. Now for the reason I gave 5 stars. I believe this waiters name is Calvin tall dirty blonde hair I’m sure he gets a lot of good reviews , Calvin is fantastic. Asks about allergies proceeds with haste and gets everything right so I tip him 25% to 30% because I respect good service. Tattoos and curly hair, if you want a better tip be like Calvin (again I believe this is his name). Lastly it was 5 stars cause the food is phenomenal, been coming here since I was 8 years old and it never misses.
Sushi was pretty simple. Wasn't impressed. We thought it would be better. Just kind of flavorless. Midi soup was diluted or at least it tasted that way. Cucumber salad was good. Teagan, our waitress, was very attentive and good.
We really liked their food. The rolls we’re good. My favorite is the executive suite roll, so much flavor in a roll. Their service wasn’t bad. The waitress was super nice and tended to us. Loved the decor of the place, the lanterns for half of the restaurant and jelly fish lookalike we’re floating like they were lights. We also had Sake that’s not pictured and yellowtail sashimi? Very fresh and good.
Went here for a birthday dinner celebration and we had a good experience. Our waiter was super awesome and recommended a roll to us that was off menu. I wish I could remember the name of it because it was definitely my favorite!! We also tried their crispy shrimp appetizer which to me tasted kinda like Cheetos haha they were good. The only thing we didn’t like was the Vegas roll, which is a bummer because it is a standard roll. Overall food was good and I would go back. Keep in mind I have high standards for sushi having grown up on the coast and lived in Hawaii.
Came here on a Thursday afternoon. It wasn't busy so we were helped very quickly. The service was great, our waitress was super nice and was quick to serve us. We decided to get 4 sushi rolls and Calamari. The price we paid was pretty expensive, I would had rather gone to Fat Fish but for the time crunch I was in, it wasn't too bad!
You can find innovative rolls and drinks here. The service is good and fast. The hosts are pleasant. Sushi is great. The location is a little dingy so 4 stars.
The food was decent for a non-coastal city. Coming from Boston, I'm used to pretty great seafood, but Tsunami was a pleasant surprise. We ordered a bunch of rolls and they were all delicious in their own way. The tempura was great here.
Though service is slow, it is also personable and polite. I found my server of good humor and knowledgeable of the food, as if he himself ate it. The interior is urban modern with only the slightest touch of Asian. Seating is a mix of booths and booths with chairs. Music is tropical Caribbean and completely removes you from the mountains of Salt Lake City. In this environment, it is too easy to imagine myself on the beaches, having fresh caught fish turned into sushi. And talking sushi, the sushi was DELICIOUS on the first bite and worth the wait. When ordering, scan the table for a menu that comes up on your smart phone, in honor of current COVID standard of contactless ordering. (I much prefer this to the many restaurants printing and throwing away paper needlessly. Why spend money on printing and paper costs, let alone add to the mess that is our country, when you can go digital, like the modern people we are?) I ordered the P.D. and the Jenny. The P.D. (see images) was a mix of both tangy and sweet flavors, bursting on the pallette with a touch of savory in the back. Somewhere in each bite is also a tad bit of spice but not enough to disrupt the decent combination of flavor between salmon and mango. While the flavor is not consistent with each bite, it is still good enough to come back. If not satiated after the P.D., I encourage you to try the Jenny, served currently with a choice of king or ivory salmon. I chose the traditional salmon as I found the ivory a tad too buttery in flavor for my taste. Don't let my pallet stop you from exploring, though, because it was still delicious as sashimi- which is how I tasted it. Sadly, I give this experience 4 stars and not the 5 it so easily would have deserved had I not had to send back my tea twice just to get a hot cup of tea. (Arrived cool in a warm cup first, then warmer but not "hot tea" until the third cup arrived.) But, if you use that as excuse not to come and enjoy this experience, bluntly stated: you are an idiot.
EDITED: I do feel that service has improved greatly since my last review. I frequent this location for lunch, and the bento boxes are a good deal also. I wish I could give it a 2.5 stars. I've been here a few times, and will say that I've had better food/service at the downtown location. The last time I went in (a few days ago) I was alone, and when asked if I had a reservation, I said no, and was told to take a seat. Sat there for maybe 15-20min, until a different person finally asked if I was waiting on take out. When I said no, I was asked to wait to be seated by someone else, and they immediately took me to a seat at the half empty sushi bar. Prior I was considering just leaving and going to Yings down the street. Food was average; consistent with past visits; I got salmon teriyaki with tempura shrimp (only came with 3 shrimp, heavy tempura.. lots of breading) and a spider roll. Pricing I feel is high, for smaller portions for less food than Yings. The decor is definitely nicer than yings ... but overall at this point I have no reason to go here again 🤣. Both are equal distance from my house, and I always have great service at Yings, with much better value for my $$. Picture is 18.99 dinner (included miso soup)
It was delicious that's all I recall I'll update this later when I go to the movies again. I had the shrimp and teriyaki combo was flavorful shrimp had a small crunch chicken was sweet. I wish I got sushi though but I really wanted something fried.
I had an amazing dining experience! The food arrived promptly and tasted delicious. Our server at the bar was exceptionally friendly. I savored the refreshing flavors of the Sake Delight with Asian Pear, Lychee, and White Peach for just $8.99. My cousin and I indulged in a delightful array of dishes including Don Juan sushi, Fried Calamari, Chicken Wings, Gyoza, and Salmon Rangoons. While everything was superb, the only disappointment was the dry Salmon Rangoons, which could have been improved with a touch of cream cheese and green onions. Nonetheless, the portions were just right, and I can't wait to return soon for another delightful meal! The whole meal was $70.
Been here plenty of times with good service. Not tonight. First off, they wouldn’t seat me (party of 1) without giving them my phone #….they put me on a wait list even tho the place was empty. I should’ve pushed for the manager. The waiter was MIA. The manger kept looking at me but didn’t come check on me. Weird. Won’t be back.
Last time I ate at Tsunami (different location) was years ago and I wasn't impressed with their food. Came back here the other day with friends for a special occasion and I feel like there wasn't much improvement. I ordered Katsu which is ok but the rice that came with it is a little bit hard or could be undercooked. The service and ambience is good but hopefully they will put an effort to improve their food quality too.
Unfortunately I see why this location has the lowest rating out of all the locations. Whoever the manager was working on 9/18 was awful. The rolls were made too small and our lovely server noticed and was like “these are so small so I’m going to grab my manager and see what we can do” Manager comes over (male), didn’t hear out his server. Asks what the problem is and we just say there’s no filling in these rolls. His response, all our rolls are made with a special rice so it was probably just rolled too tight. And I responded the rice isn’t the issue the fact that there’s nothing in the center is the issue. He goes, “I’m open for feedback”. Actually if he was ACTUALLY open to feedback he would have taken the time to listen to his server (who was the one who noticed the smallness of our rolls) and he would have taken a look at our rolls verses assuming things. Super disappointed in his behavior towards us and his mistreatment of his server. To top it off it was my birthday night. So my kids couldn’t even sing to me since we felt so dismissed by him. Honestly I’m waiting for tsunami to contact me to make this right
Marisa was extremely unprofessional from the moment we were sat at our table. She was short with her responses when we asked about the menu and seemed flustered when we asked to order after waiting quite a long time. Our food was delicious but due to our experience with our server we will not be returning any time soon.
I just left Tsunami and waited 15 minutes longer than asked originally (1 hr) for a to go order! The front end sent out my order with someone else… right in front of me. The person actually arrived to wait for their to go order after me! I can’t believe I watched this happen. Then the manager said there was a mistake and said he would have his kitchen hurry the order and I said it will take 30 more minutes and he agreed! He made NO offer to either compensate me or make any other consideration toward me. We have dined at this location for years!! Crappy service and terrible management!! We have been witnessing the demise of this restaurant for a while and always seem to give them one more chance!! I don’t know if the other locations would have the same experience but we’re done!! Don’t be surprised if you have the same experience!!
I came because I heard good things. What I found was a poor experience. I had just moved here and had an out of state license just wanting to sit at the bar. I sat and when asked for ID showed my valid ID… the server/bartender took it and immediately whispered to someone and then came back asked why it said “not for real id purposes”…. Yes it’s not a “REAL ID” you know the thing that has nothing to do with proving your age. This all went on and and after showing my freaking passport I was allowed to be served. I was served mediocre sushi after. Taking the whole experience and hassle into account… don’t come here. Much better sushi around.
