Opinions de Tai Wu Restaurant Millbrae
Hong Kong Palace has consistently impressed with their dim sum. The quality and pricing is attested by the dining rooms filled to capacity with the great and good of the Cantonese community. Not only is the food served hot and delicious, one can also take advantage of their "happy hour" pricing! Selected dishes, around two dozen, are priced at a discount for the first 1.5 hours post opening of the restaurant. One can get a generous portion of 10 or so large (I do mean large) salt and pepper prawns for a pocket friendly $12USD! The shrimp is well fried, well seasoned, and a treat especially at the price! Also on the happy hour menu is their mix grain lo mei gai, chunks of chicken, laced with fat pork, a salt egg and sticky rice mixed with black wild rice all wrapped well in lotus leaf and steamed. Excellent flavor, mouth feel, and nostalgia mixed with modernization! Another highlight on the happy hour menu is their wood ear mushroom dumplings. Filled to bursting in a sumai wrapper ina shape of a traditional dumpling. 4 per order and delicious and pleasing with a touch of chili sauce! The mushroom flavor is predominant and the filling moist and lovely! This is not to say their regular menu has no high lights! They serve a great roast duck, their steamed BBQ pork bun has one of the more flavorsome BBQ pork fillings. Also delightful is their peashoot dumpling (lovely well filled!). The classic shrimp dumpling is also quite good, chunks of shrimp threatens to burst from its wrapped confines! Look about the menu and you'd find hit after hit. Look at what the aunties and uncles are eating and get inspired. A personal favourite, however, is their 莎翁, Chinese eggy powdered sugar donuts. They make them to order so the donuts are fresh, with a crisp exterior and soft eggy interior. The donuts are well coated in powdered sugar and just simply divine! They have a small parking lot next to the restaurant and a large, 20 odd space lot two blocks further north on El Camino. Just watch for the signage.
I remember growing up when this used to be Tai Wu before transitioning into Hong Kong Palace. I used to come here in the early mornings for yum cha. It was always packed and parking was a bit difficult during those times. I believe Tai Wu departed not too long ago. I was recommended to try this place out ever since it opened by close ones of mine. Finally I got the chance to for dinner, upon arrival, it was packed but luckily we had a reservation and that was reliving since it took me some time to get a parking spot, but that does not bug me since I am a very patient person. Since I was the last one to arrive, food was already on the table which was just in time for my big appetite. They offer authentic Chinese dishes, fresh seafood, specialty dishes, dim sum, Hong Kong style barbecue items, many unique fried items, wok specials, tons of soups to choose from, fine dried seafood/bird nest, vegetarian selections, homemade desserts and much more to choose from. Everything is made to order here which is always a plus for me since it is quality over quantity. The staffs here are welcoming, well trained, understanding, polite and helpful where my visit was a satisfying and issue free one. In fact, the head chef was nice enough where he came out to greet us even though he was on a busy schedule packed with tasks, but little did I know he knew my family for over forty plus years. The building has three levels in total, where you can do karaoke on the upper floors. Overall this place is slightly on the high end side, but I promise you will be satisfied with everything you order. I highly recommend this place to all Chinese food enthusiasts, if you are willing to try something new, a laid back spot to dine at or if you just so happen to be in the area to check them out. I definitely will be back to tryout the other delicious items they have to offer.
I always pass by this place when driving in Millbrae. My friends were craving dim sum and we decided to try out this place. They have a super small lot right next door, but it was packed. We saw that we were able to park at Burger King, where there was ample parking. It was across the street, but definitely convenient. We went inside and saw that it was kind of small on the first floor, but there were still available tables. They ended up telling us to go to the third floor. We were pretty surprised because three floors for a restaurant?? We went upstairs and there was a lot of empty tables. We were seated immediately, but our table wasn't set up yet. It did take a while to get our tea and paper for ordering, but nothing that deterred us from here. We didn't get a menu to mark stuff, but I spoke Cantonese so I was able to order. The ladies walk/push the carts here. Their custard buns were really cute with pig designs lol. I really liked their beef rice noodle wrap. The total was $69 dollars for three of us, which I didn't think was bad at all. I think the decor and ambiance is really nice. I would like to come back and bring my family to try it.
My family and I enjoyed our experience here! The dim sum was very tasty and authentic, just what we'd expect from traditional Hong Kong flavors. The Pork & Shrimp Siu Mai and Shrimp Dumplings (Ha Gaau) were delicious, with the Egg Tarts a "must have". The Custard Piglet Buns were also creative and yummy I highly recommend this place!
Great service paired with delicious Chinese food, which is a bit unusual, so I was pleasantly surprised. We tried a beef dish that was absolutely delicious, as it was very soft and tender. And we also had a delicious tofu and mushrooms dish, as well as one of the prime fish dishes. Everything that we had was absolutely tasty, and well-made. Every time we order here, we get great service and delicious food!
Happy with our first visit at the new Millbrae location for the famous HK Lounge in SF. Food is great, especially love the tofu and fish clay pot. We also got the siu mai, fried rice, roast duck and some veggies. They have some dim sum options even during dinner hours. Interior is a bit cold, hope heat can be turned on next time we visit. ;)
Dimsun is good. Service is good. Price is reasonable. The plate and tea cup are clean. Only concern is the parking. You may need to find the alternative parking if you arrive during peak time since the restaurant parking may be full.
Excellent spot for dimsum. They have wait staff constantly circulating to provide fresh dishes. Everything is made with care and service is excellent. Personal favorites are the shrimp dumpling and red pork buns. Will not be disappointed here!
Nice banquet hall on 3rd floor. Great atmosphere with large video screen and excellent sound system. Great for Karaoke or video presentations. We had the roast piglet dinner that was wonderfully made.
We recently had a wedding banquet celebration there. The food & service were excellent. The manager was easy to work with, listened to our request for menu changes and the food came out great: nice presentation, delicious & generous portions. Staff was attentive. We love the large dance floor, which was included with the banquet menu price. They had 2 large free parking lots for guests. Overall this restaurant was less expensive than other large places for wedding or other celebrations. We had 2 minor issues: The restaurant initially told us that there's 3 parking lots. The manager did not inform us about the change beforehand and some guests had to move their cars to the other lot (before the car is towed). The sound system that the restaurant allowed us to use did not play the music in our slideshow, but it played the photos. We recommend making an appointment to test the sound system in advance if you are to borrow & use their system (no extra charge). We definitely recommend this place.
We had a lunch with plenty of dim sum. The flavor was great, and the size of each serving was much more than we expected, so that I took the rest of them back home as part of dinner. The only difficult thing is parking. The parking space of this restaurant is extremely limited. Be prepared to park across the street (usually with 1 hour limit) or about 2 min drive to park at Safeway.......
Best dim sum I've had! Excellent quality. Filling for buns and dumplings is very generous. We will be back. Also, we shared with my parents, and they absolutely will be going back.
Great service! Go early for dinner. The food was served quickly and tasted yummy! Something new that we tried was like goat stew with mushrooms and cabbage in clay pot. The meat is so soft. Recommend to try
The roast duck was fantastic. Best in the Bay Area!
I Don’t usually review but this place needs 5+++++ stars foods are great atmosphere is great also staffs are very friendly , the owner of the place is handa on with His customers We went here last night (10/3) for family dinner He suggests great foods in their menu and even gave us a complimentary dessert the peking duck was awesome I don ‘t eat duck due to its after taste but this one is great highly reco all foods We tried are great We went back again the following day (10/4) for lunch the owner himself prep our foods and served it to us again He gave us complimentary dessert it is sesame ball but it is different it has tapioca yhe made it crunchy and the fillings is great . All in all I give this place 5++++++ stars exceeded our expectations …. This place is highly recommended .. salute to the owner for being friendly and hands on
My parents love this place for their early brunch dimsum discounts. Pretty good options and dim sum. No complaints.
Authentic high quality dim sum and other Chinese dishes. Clean spacious and beautifully appointed setting. We were there early afternoon and there were still plenty of customers. We definitely plan to go back again and again.
The food is abundant, delicious, and reasonably priced. It's the best choice near the airport! The only drawback is the insufficient number of service staff, which could be improved
Nice restaurant with a huge party ballroom upstairs. Tony and Wei Wei are both super friendly managers who always take good care of us. Their food is considered moderate but cheaper than other millbrae Chinese restaurants.
Awesome foodie experience at HK palace. I was staying in a hotel next door and just needed some takeout food. I ended up having some of the best, juiciest duck ever. It was so good that I had to go back to the restaurant to try out more delicacies, including dessert (do not leave without the sesame balls). The restaurant is huge, great place for events, private room dinners and even karaoke. Plus it’s in short walking distance from BART if you are into alternative transportation like me. Highly recommended!
We got one of the private rooms upstairs. Parking is limited. 3 handicap and another 3-4 general parking. Some spots on the street. Make sure you are traveling north on El Camino. No u-turns around here. Food is good. We made a reservation. Suckling pig is discounted atm. Pictures below are what we had for dinner.
It has been over 4 years since the last time I had a meal here. A new owner came in a year ago and I feel like the food is way better than what it was before. Wish I was still living in the state to eat here all the time. Coffee pork ribs were crispy with just enough sauce for a full flavor! A must order since it's so unusual. And the Honey Walnut shrimp is so hard to get right or even find any where else. First time having the baked Pork buns. So good! This is definitely a stop in to eat every time I come back to visit.
We had a dinner with family friends at this restaurant and the food was amazing. The king crab was made three different ways, the Chilean sea bass was lightly glazed with honey and the suckling pig had juicy, crispy skin. We all left with many to-go boxes and a satisfied belly! The Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon also was a good quality red wine, very reasonably priced. I heard they are doing promotions Monday-Friday 11am-12pm half off on dim sum. I can’t wait to bring my friends to try!
Great restaurant! Food came quickly and was delicious and authentic. I especially enjoyed the salt and pepper squid, which was really crispy and perfectly seasoned. Parking was a little difficult for our first time there, but once you know that they have 3 reserved detached parking lots, it's not too hard. There's a small lot next to the building, but if you continue north, you'll see signs for Hong Kong Palace on the same side of El Camino after the light. The addresses are 400 El Camino, 450 El Camino, and 460 El Camino, the last two are past the MQ restaurant. This is a huge 3 story restaurant, with dining on the first and third floors and private rooms on the second floor, with an elevator option to get to each floor.
The 5 star is for the food. Quality and quantity were excellent! We went for dinner. Ordered 1 soup and 4 dishes. The chicken chow fun was really pan fried, and had a nice flavorite (some restaurants will boil and then mixed in wok). Salty pepper fish was tender inside and crispy outside. The beef dish was also tender and juicy. Husband who usually doesn't drink soup, had 2 bowls of the papaya and snow ear(Tremella fuciformis). Yum! Food was delicious; however the kitchen service was awfully snow. We waited for 30 minutes from the time orders put in to the time that the first dish came out. The service stuff was not attentive to notice. We have to flag them down to check with the kitchen. One star off.
Nice interior and exterior design, upstairs reserve rooms and karaoke, food quality is good but not as the best, impressed by fatty beef flank and fried style egg plant, fish and shrimps are fresh but everywhere is the same with fresh materials, parking is limited, there’s another parking lot cross the street, lunch tea time might be super busy, overall but pricy for seafood every where now and nice in and out design.
Pretty fast service here. The food here was pretty good, and I quite liked the lo mei gei, sticky rice steamed in lotus leaf. In my experience, this place is pretty crowded most of the time so I would recommend getting a reservation. All in all, I would say that with the fast food service and good food, Tai Wu is a very solid choice if you're looking to get dim sum, with or without a large group.
It's recommended for families. Enjoy varieties of dim sum
It's a dim sum place that has been around since covid. It has traditional dim sum, nothing fusion. Service is excellent. The restaurant has 3 floors with an elevator. Dinner menu has many entrees to choose from. There's a tiny parking lot. Street parking is nil.
Came here for a wedding banquet and had a good time. The food was good and plentiful. It cane out fairly quickly and tasted great. I especially the black child fish. I can't tell you about pricing. They have a deal with the burger king down the block for parking, do that's no problem. The main floor was a little tight for 12-15 tables but the also have upstairs area. I liked it there.
A male man was friendly and excellent service and knows how to communicate English speaking! Thank you! We enjoyed our lunch and will try to go back to have dinner! Thank you👍
The service could be wayyyyyyyy better (they kinda ignore you a lot)... but I came here for the food and most of what we had was good. We had the Siu Mai, Chinese broccoli, salted egg yolk pumpkin, har gow, and shrimp crepes which were all good. The sticky rice and beef chow fun could've used more salt/flavor.. it just felt like it was missing something. The place itself could use an upgrade and the bathroom could be a little bit cleaner.
Our first time visiting this restaurant. We went for a baby 1st birthday celebration. Our first impression, was WOW, the place is beautiful. It was a large party, so we were directed to the 3rd floor. Who would have known the place could seat that many people. There was 20 party tables which took half the room and still another half for their other guests. All the dishes that was served was tasty and delicious. Food gets 5 stars and finding parking gets 3 stars.
The owner of the restaurant maintains good quality of foods by using fresh ingredients. Services good! Free parking available next to the restaurant building and additional parking space also close by! Their prices are reasonable! There are about fourteen different kinds of fantastic delicious desserts amongst which I like Egg Custard Roll, Sponge Cake, Meng Bean Coconut Flavor Pudding, Sweet Black Sesame Roll, Mango Pudding, Baked Custard Tart.....The Best!
Not busy for a Saturday morning but there was a street fair in town so that could be why not that busy. Food was good and all the dim sum mostly came a few at a time.
Five of us came to try the $88 set menu for 4-6 people. (I initially thought it was $88 per person and was overly disappointed, but found out later it was $88 for all of us 😆). We ended up ordering 3 other dishes, which brought our total closer to $200, but it was not bad. Everyone enjoyed the food.
We came here 12pm on a Saturday and there were open tables to our surprise. They have two parking lots, one next to the restaurant and additional parking down the road at the old Burger King (next to MQ). We ordered 12 dim sums and one rice dish. The dim sums were good, hot and fresh. The service was okay, the servers wouldn’t take away empty dim sum plates even though they would come to our table. We resorted to leaving them on the side table and then they would take them away so fast. After receiving all our dim sums, we were waiting for the rice dish and they had forgotten to make it. We asked the server and she asked the manager and you can tell they were making it now. The rice was too salty, and rice not fried, still soggy. They probably rushed it since they forgot it. Another big thing is that it was too hot in the restaurant, we were sweating eating and drinking hot tea. They need to increase the AC or open some windows.
It’s nice to come on a weekday to eat dim sum since it’s not too crowded and we could be seated right away. For a party of 2 the quantity of food seems a little overboard, but we ordered with the intention of taking food home since this restaurant isn’t convenient to where we stayed. I ordered my usual favorites: - Deep Fried Pumpkin with Salted Egg Yolk - Pan Fried Chives Dumpling - Deep Fried Turnip Cake with XO Sauce (Spicy) - Shiu Mai Shrimp and Pork The food is consistently delicious so I dine here every year when I visit the Bay. The service is usually very good, but on this visit they forgot some of our dishes even though I checked with them multiple times in both English and Cantonese. They were friendly and apologetic, but it was still a little frustrating and that is why I rated them 4 stars. Normally I’d give them a 5. Regardless, I will keep coming back. The quality and uniqueness their menu offers is worth it, way better than what we can get in Hawaii.
Just wait until they're fully reopened. Right now it's take out only and it's a hot mess on the weekends. Long wait, messy pick up orders. But food is still pretty good. The shrimp rice roll (churng fun) is hands down the best item. The beef items were disappointing. Hope everything reopens soon!
My family was not a fan of this place for the longest time - probably because the service sucks, the food is alright and overpriced. I agree to a degree, but I thought the dinner that we had that night was actually pretty good. We got the family style meals which included veggies, noodles, fish, peeking duck, more veggies, lots of meat, etc. I was pleasantly surprised at how good each dish tasted. Service was kind of flaky though. We asked for waters and she brought in cups and a water pitcher, set it down and never served us. We just grabbed it ourselves. After dinner, we were hanging around like most big parties do and they literally told us that we needed to leave. So rude. I didn't see how much the bill was, but I know it wasn't cheap. Overall, the food is decent, but overprice and don't come here if you expect good service.
Good go to dim sum without a ridiculous wait. They do all the classics fairly well with some a few highlights every so often. Nice setting but minus points for the tables with the cross bars that my knees keep ramming into.
There was a constant cold draft from what seemed like an open door. Cigarette smoke came through the dining room from an open door to the kitchen. The whole steamed fish was excellent. The white chicken was dry. The mushroom dish was very good. The cold meats appetizer was dry. It seemed like half the dishes were leftover from CNY.
It was an event held upstairs on 3rd floor. The dish was really soo. It had more to do with the cooking than the type of food they provided because they did give you relatively good quality seafood, poultry etc. Just the cooking was not the best. Also, still not easy to find parking.
We were hankering for some dim sum and we had not been to Tai Wu in Millbrae. But when we got there, it was now operated as a new restaurant named Hong Kong Palace. We thought we’d give it a try. We ordered traditional dim sum favorites: the Shiu Mai was all right. The barbecue pork was flavorful, moist, and tender the tofu skin wrap lacked some flavor although the tofu skin they used was good quality. The braised tripe with a little amount of tendon was good, tender, tasty. The Peking duck (they did not have just standard dim sum roast duck was bland and had no flavor (did they forget to marinate it before they cooked it). It was also extremely fatty. Ugh! I miss Mr. Fongs roast duck that is served at Tai Wu - lean, crispy skin, flavorful, tender meat. Not so with this new restaurant. They had a pan fried noodle with seafood. It was uber dry. Not much sauce there and had not much flavor or taste either. The pork in crispy rice mochi was good except maybe the mochi coating was a tad thick and made the pork inside it less tasty. We had the coconut red bean cake for dessert. That one was good. I hope this is all because they’re new to the place and need time to adjust. I’d be willing to give them another chance but I think I’ll wait until a few months have passed. Maybe their cooks need to get their act together and get used to their new environment.
Decent typical dim sum foods at better prices than the area. Taste can be hit or miss. The siu mai was tasty, the tripe was blander, and chicken feet were overdone. Some food items that we wanted to try were out. Service was okay during late lunch time when they may be planning to close for lunch. Sat downstairs. Cannot speak to the atmosphere of the upper levels.
I have been coming to this restaurant since it first opened up. Their dim sum menu has improved since my first impression of it. It is certainly not the best, but it is consistent. However, service can be hit or miss. There are certain staff that definitely tell me to give this place five stars. However, other staff at this restaurant are rude. Here is an example of typical service. We arrived at the restaurant early, but we're seated next to a large family who took up 3 tables. When food was coming out direction, all of the items that we wanted were taken. This happened for about 20 minutes. With no food in sight, we flagged down a wait staff in a suit. When we asked for a sheet to order food, he told us that they didn't use those anymore. No problem. We let him know that due to the large family, we weren't getting any food. Immediately, he rudely told us that we weren't getting food because we weren't ordering from the servers carrying food out. However, aside from this person, the rest of the staff were helpful, responsive, and, in two cases, predicted what we wanted. I don't want to rank a place less for one bad egg, but this is what you can occasionally expect, and this is what detracts from a restaurant experience.
Food is good but hardly any service. We had to service ourselves such as utensils, napkins, more water for our tea.
I was staying nearby and in the mood for dim sum. There seemed to be a lot of choices in the area but settled on this one. The place was huge, so despite it being crowded with lots of families and large groups I was able to be seated right away up on the 3rd floor. I guess it's overflow and was nothing fancy, not great atmosphere - just a large room with various size folding banquet tables. Anyway, I wasn't there for the view and really enjoyed the food. The staff were nice but seemed to have many tables to cover so be patient.
Roast duck, Ha Cao, and Scallop Vermicelli were all good. The lunch specials had value. However, it was a bit dirty. Also, we ordered Beef Lo Mein and we waited 58 minutes for it only for them to cancel it on us. They charge $1.60/person for just tea. Altogether $50 including tips for 3 people.
This is a new restaurant replaces Tai wu. It is pretty much the same, but now, dimsum only on the third floor. Like like they cover the seat now. It looks much better and doesn't feel cheap. We had dimsum, and dimsum is yummy. The first time, I have lo mai kai with small abalone. We have chicken feet , xo daikon, lo mai kai, and chui zhou dumpling. All are yummy.
With three stories, it is one of the sizable dim sum places in the bay area. The menu has lots of variety. Many customers order BBQ dishes. The price is competitive. The dim sum meets expectation, a bit on the salty side. The place is understaffed considering the size, resulting in inattentive service and very busy staff. That is a pity. The upkeep of the place is fair. That is another pity given the opportunities of the location and the real estate spaces. We like the menu overall. You can try and decide for yourselves.
Food: 3/5 Service: 3/5 Ambiance: 3.5/5 Overall: Pretty standard fare. The extended review... Food: 3/5 - We had quite the selection of food. Food was standard fare with typical Chinese dishes. Service: 3/5 - Standard service. Ambiance: 3.5/5 - We were in one of the private rooms which was pretty nice in comparison to the main hall.
Overview: Chinese Food...family style. Meal/Time: Dinner Sat 5/11 @ 1806 Party size: 9 Seated: 1806 Ordered: 1810 First ordered item arrived: 1815 Decor/Atmosphere: 2 floors of dining. Looks like the banquet rooms are upstairs. Parking: there is a small lot next to the restaurant, but if you continue down El Camino there is a dedicated larger parking lot right across the street at the corner. It is marked for Hong Kong Palace Parking only. Family style dining...meaning large tables available. Service/ Front of the House: greeted and seated immediately. Service/Serving Staff: helpful in describing and making suggestions. They came around and replaced dirty plates. Food: we ordered Family style. Crab & Fish maw soup $22.00 - very flavorful, but add some black pepper. Steamed Chicken $32.00 - served cold with minced ginger and oil. Peking Duck $48 for a whole duck- crispy skin. Meat is tender. I just which the skin was a bit more crispy. The buns that were served were really tiny. Honey Walnut shrimp $22- really big shrimp. Lightly battered. Not overly sauced. Salt and Pepper Lobster $66.00- ok... flavor is very light. Steamed then lightly floured and flash deep fried. Lobster is chopped up so you can pick what you want. Oyster and Tofu clay pot $24.00- the oysters are dried oysters and not fresh. The Tofu is really soft. Unless you are used to dried oyster the flavor can be a bit intense. Steamed fish $55.00 - moist. Not much flavor . They dress the fish at the table Sautéed pea shoots with garlic $22.00 - yummy but some pieces are on the mature side so it can be a bit tough HK Style Peking ribs $20.00 - more like sliced pork chops. Not boneless pieces. Flavor is really light. Beef short ribs with tofu $29.99- tender braised beef with steamed broccoli. The Tofu is creamy. Very flavorful. The sauce is light and a bit peppery. This is the winner for tonight Complimentary dessert- red bean soup with kelp. Sweet and a bit fishy tasting. Not my cup of tea. Value: $375.15 (Tip included $67.53) total $442.68. $49.19 per person including tip and tax. Lots of food, not bad for banquet level food. Restroom: Men's Room has 2 urinals and 1 toilet with 1 sink. The automatic hand dryer was broken at the time of my visit. The bathroom is very roomy and very clean as Chinese Restaurant Bathrooms go. Will I come back?: sure why not... not really bad.
Came here tonight for stramed chicken on a chili sauce. I like it, and went well with steamed rice. What i didn't like was the head waiter took the chicken away whem i asked for the bill. If it wasn't for the chicken, I might have rated it lower. I just feel they didn't deserve a tip!
Attended a local banquet. The food was fresh and properly cooked but the seasoning was quite bland. I've definitely had better. The staff talked loudly while our master of ceremonies was giving out awards. It was distracting and I had to get their attention twice to ask them to quiet down. We had to ask for everything ... soy sauce, water, hot sauce. I'm disappointed.
The waiter aggressively convinced us to order more food and then proceeded to laugh when we could not finish it. Food was mediocre, food portions were small, and left feeling disrespected
This is a good restaurant, food is good however, there is no concept of reservation. Typical Chinese mentality, no decency. I made a reservation on May 13 for May 14, 2016 at 7:00 pm. When reached there were no difference. We got the worst table with unprofessional service. Since my wife likes the food we spent more that US$250.00 for a party of four with no alcoholic drinks. There is a big competition in this locality Tai Wu management should think that professional service and quality food with reasonable price is the key to success otherwise customers can move to other places. My criticism is to see that the service is improved. Not to mention, compared to food charges are higher. Next time I may think to go to another Chinese Restaurant in the same area.
Food is good. But the service is very very bad. I don't recommend
It wasn't a busy day so we were seated quickly. We wouldn't recommend the short ribs dish, a lot of fat. It's usually one of our favorites at dim sum restaurants. The dumplings were good. We had to wait a long time for soy sauce. They lady that helped me check out tried to force us to put in a tip % that she wanted. Fyi if you don't give them the tip they want, they'll be rude about it. The lady told us "only this much tip??" We were very generous with the tip too. Overall, not the best experience.
One of the worst values in bay area. For Chinese New Year's dinner, it was $600 for 10 dishes for 10 people. One dish was fried rice. The expensive dish was a steamed catfish. Didn't taste good. For $600 for 10 dishes you would expect something reasonably decent. I could easily get a full steak dinner or unlimited hot pot for the same price. You are basically paying 5 star prices for a 1 star meal. Dessert was sponge cake. It ended up close to $800 after the included gratuity. I don't bother with any big Chinese restaurants anymore. Chinese food used to mean you get more value for what you pay. Those days are gone.
Hong Kong Palace was 1/2 empty at 11:30am on a Tuesday. It quickly filled up. There aren't dim sum carts roaming the floor. The ordering system is marking the menu and submitting it to a staff member. There were only two people working on 25+ tables which is grossly understaffed. Customers had to refill their own tea pots, which is very odd for a dim sum restaurant. I was like, why are people walking into the kitchen with their tea pots? The waiter mis-marked our ordering sheet and some of the dim sum we ordered never came out. The first item came out after 30 minutes of waiting. The last item arrived over an hour after we ordered. So, if you have only an hour for lunch on a weekday, I can't recommend Hong Kong Palace. Most of the food tasted below average. The exception was the tofu skin rolls. My friend sudden got up and went to the washroom to throw up. He later came back and said it was rancid. The noise level was OK for a conversation over tea. The only redeeming factor of Hong Kong Palace is the menu. Some of the dim sum sounded interesting. The food is below average. The kitchen is slow and the service is abysmal. There are much better lunch places in Millbrae/Burlingame.
Terrible customer service - DO NOT go there especially for any special occasion or celebration. Very rude staff and the female restaurant manager's attitude was even worse than the staff. We had a party of 9, but there were 8 bowls of setting on the table. When we asked for one more bowl for the soup, the waiter didn't believe us that we had 9 people. He proceeded to point his finger and counted around the table of the 8 of us sitting there at the time and ignored the empty seat with a jacket on it (one person was away from the table at the restroom). We told him one person was at the restroom and we needed 9 bowls. He continued to argue with us and INSISTED that we only had 8 people like he didn't believe us. It took a few more tries for us to convince him that there was really a 9th person before he reluctantly went to get one more bowl for us. The dinner package came with white rice, but they never gave us the rice until we asked for it several times. We had to ask twice for them to change our dirty plates. The fish entree came out VERY LATE, AFTER we had finished eating all of the other entrees, and they were non-apologetic about it. They were actually non-apologetic for everything that went wrong for that meal. They broke the chocolate 'Happy Birthday' sign for my mother's birthday cake into many pieces and the manager accused us of breaking it and giving it to them that way. This was one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had!!! DON'T GO THERE!!!!
It was missed an item, we told the manager to cancel it when almost to go. He still counts and take the food on the last mins. One star is for the manager.
Last time we visited we had a dispute between what we ordered and we were charged. We were 8 people party so we checked in the dim sum order sheet and I guess it is normal I won't ask around what you and you and you order so basically my point is that other than what I ordered I didn't know what the other people ordered. At the time we checked out, we checked on what we ordered to compare what they stamped according to the size of the dim sum they delivered. We found there was one extra SM dim sum difference. Before raising the question to the restaurant we asked each other at that time if we ordered anything extra not in the dim sum order sheet but we didn't. Next we told the waiter and then the waiter brought that up to the boys lady. What we were surprised the boss lady reacted quite rude saying that it happened again I don't know if she meant this happened again from particularly us or she meant this happened again in general. Long story short, we found out that SM dim sum in question was put down by one of the workers during the time and we basically didn't even know if maybe any of us ordered. We did ask the boss lady to charge it anyway before we found out. We also told her that after we understood what's wrong. What we felt bad was that she sounded like we were trying to cheat. I really don't think it should be our job to remember what to order especially we have so many people and order so many. What they should do is to ask their worker to cross check while putting down the dim sum to make sure we did order in the sheet. Pretty disappointed how they handle the dispute.
Food is fine. Location is less than ideal with extremely limited parking. Decor is acceptable. This review will be based solely on the experience we had during the bill paying process. We paid the bill by credit card, hence we also filled in the "tip" field freehand. After everything was filled in and signed, the manager lady came to collect the bill and checked that it was finished. She promptly turned around and asked us to check our calculations, explaining that the tip wasn't enough because she gave us a dessert. All of this happened in front of our family members in close proximity. Please note that we did not request this dessert. Not wanting to cause a scene, we added to the tip to satisfy this absurd request for more tip. During our meal, our service was fine; not extraordinary nor bad. We tipped according to our experience, but the manager lady decided it was perfectly ok to demand more tip because she served us a dessert that wasn't asked for. We will not be returning to this restaurant anytime soon. Tip is not a requirement or an obligation. Serving items that weren't ordered in order to leverage tips is simply poor decorum. To do that in front of the other guests in the party is simply rude.
Average dim sum food. And demands no less than 15% tip. Tip is a courtesy depending on the service and the service was average. My bill was 93.03 so I tip them 6.97 to round it off to 100 but no they selected the calculated tip instead. Would not recommend this place.
On two separate occasions the shrimp was sour and past its prime but still being served to customers. The first time it happened to us we mentioned it to the staff and they apologized and replaced with an upgraded shrimp dish. The second time it happened we decided we just can’t go back. The Yee Mein noodles were also old and not fresh. Dim sum seems to be fine but dinner service is unacceptable
I’ve been to this restaurant when it was under a previous owner and now going back to try this “new” place again. Overall, the food quality is poor. Nothing was good other than the snow pork bun and Chinese donut. We tried 18 of the usual dim sum items on the menu. Everything was pretty much below par. I would not recommend nor return. Consider yourself warned!
My visit to this Bay Area dim sum restaurant was a disappointment. The service was inadequate and the food was of poor quality. The steamed spare ribs had an unpleasant sour taste and the sponge cake was inconsistent in texture, with the top half being fluffy and the bottom half being hard. To make matters worse, I accidentally bit into a small rock, which added to the overall unpleasantness of the experience. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
