I had the pleasure of photographing a wedding reception at Spring at Somerset House. It's a beautiful location for a wedding bright, elegant, and really thoughtfully designed. There’s loads of natural light (a dream for photography), and as well as a gorgeous room for dining, there's a separate space with room for a band and a proper party. The staff were brilliant throughout and the food is obviously incredible. The supplier meal I was given was absolutely mouthwatering! It’s a great choice if you’re after a stylish, upmarket London venue that still feels warm and relaxed.

Last Friday we visited Spring at Somerset House. Before I review the restaurant itself I'd just like to say how brilliant Mark (one of the security guards at Somerset House) was. We asked him for directions to Spring and not only did he escort us down there, but on the way he gave us a load of history about the building on the way. A real credit to his employer. Back to the restaurant itself, Spring offers a scratch menu which uses the food that would have been discarded and turns it into fine dining, which we chose. It was wonderful, like somebody had taken the concept of 'Bubble and Squeak' and pushed it to the ultimate level using every type of food. That doesn't do it justice, but I'm sure you get the idea. Everything we ate was fabulous, the staff were attentive without ever being intrusive, the wine was gorgeous and the entire experience was perfectly executed. There is, of course, an a la carte menu for those not fancying the scratch. Great food, lovely wine, wonderful staff inside and out. 100% recommended.

The Spring restaurant is within the Sommerset House was & the food was simply amazing! All the food was cooked with fruit, veggies & other ingredients that would have gone to waste otherwise! Simply incredible! Salt baked beetroot with herb creme fresh, Imam Byialdi ( aubergine dish) & meringue with rhubarb sorbet! Divine!

Truly delightful food in an airy, understated dining room. Perfect service including a great approach to a gluten allergy.

Amazing food. The mushroom in my seabass was incredible, and the tart was absolutely the best smooth dessert I have ever had - my friend confirmed the same. Only thing we were surprised was the meat plate - it was good, but not as exceptional as other food.

Absolutely great atmosphere with great food! Very high ceilings which makes the acoustics pretty good. Cannot remember if i hear any music though. Lovely stuff and very cute and knowledgeable sommelier.

Words cannot describe how amazing the food was at Spring! Skye Gyngell’s philosophy of letting the produce shine and letting it speak for itself, showed in every dish. Yeah, there’s reviews talking about the service charge but that’s London dining for you, and it goes to the staff anyway. Lamb was recommended by my section waiter and it was amazing.. along with the yummy scallops! Will be back, thanks Spring team!

Spring is one of my new favourite restaurants of all time. My husband and I visited for a finer dining date night and the ambience was like nothing I’ve experienced in another restaurant. The dining space is so beautiful & elegant, while the food is such high quality with surprising flavours that you’ll want to forever savour. If you’re in London & looking for a more high end dinner or lunch spot, you must book at Spring.

One of my favourite restaurants in London. Though the furniture is a bit dated (my chair could have done with a little spruce) it did not deter from the extraordinary food and wonderful service. The bonus is being located in one of the most beautiful buildings in London, Somerset House. The focus on vegetables being as important as the meat makes Spring extra special. Make sure you leave space for dessert! May it forever be on my London recommendation list.

Fantastic Experience We booked the scratch menu which means you get what they cook using waste ingredients, but wow! Michelin star food at Gastro pub prices. Service was perfect. You never waited too long but they didn't pester you. The ambience of the restaurant is magical, and the food is brilliant. 3 courses with bottle of wine for £115 and worth every penny If you want something different when you are in London, this is the place

The restaurant is beautifully and effortlessly elegant, nestled in a wonderfully historic building that offers other options if you want to make more of your day out. The wait staff were attentive, respectful and polite which is a 10/10 for me. As for the food, whatever your choice I’m sure your tastebuds will thank you for it, although I’d certainly recommend the roast potatoes for sides selection. They are unlike anything I’ve ever had before and they’re quite exceptional, and I’m very funny about roast potatoes! For drinks … do try the Rhubarb Sour. Enjoy.

Beautiful space, friendly staff, seasonal menu. The mushroom truffle tagliatelle was amazing, you could tell it was fresh made. The fish was great as well. The pork shop taste delicious, although butter on top of a pork chop is a bit too much. The vegetables were great. We will definitely go back, highly recommend it.

What an incredible dining experience! Everything from the beautiful space, to the incredible service from kind and knowledgeable staff, to the insanely good food... Everything was a 10/10. We had all the pre-starters and loved the freshness of the heirloom cucumbers, and the butter for the bread was perfect consistency. We tried the Prawn Aguachile and the Crab Nduja with polenta, the crab in particular was so flavoursome and the texture was sublime, it was the best thing I've tasted in ages. We had the pork belly and lamb as mains. The bed of vegetables under the lamb was just as delicious as the meat itself. We tried the custard tart with peaches and bitter chocolate cake. The peach tarte is really something special and not too heavy or sweet. If you love excellent quality wines, their sommelier introduced us to some incredible orange wines and a beautiful burgundy. We even got a cute little boule of sorbet with a candle for our anniversary. This is such a good choice for a special occasion dinner, and we will definitely be back to try their scratch menu soon (uses ingredients to avoid food waste).

Delicious food and beautiful setting. Lovely high ceilings and brilliant service. Always there when we needed them but never felt like they were hanging over us. It’s not cheap to come here but it’s definitely worth it on a special occasion. I had the San Daniele, melon and stracciatella to start then beef fillet for mains. Both were superb.

On a magical spring evening, my friends and I found ourselves stepping into the enchanting realm of Spring, a restaurant renowned for its culinary masterpieces and classy ambiance. We were gathered there to celebrate a special birthday. The restaurant was a vision of elegance, adorned with blooming flowers and soft lighting that cast a warm, inviting glow over the entire space. The menu was a work of art, offering a tantalizing array of dishes that promised a gastronomic adventure. Each course that arrived was amazing. It was nice to celebrate spring in the Spring! Thanks to all team.

With the passing of the equinox a new season is in early bloom. The soothing, calm decor of the dining room is impeccable, and only surpassed by the explosion of flavors that made for one of my most memorable meals in a long time. Highly recommend it!

Really relaxing environment and great food. The service is efficient and professional. Would come here again. The waiter mentioned they change the dinner menu every 2 weeks

Honestly, one of the best restaurants in London. Every dish was exquisite. Fancy and elegant, but without being pretentious. Staff was very friendly.

A remarkable restaurant. The setting and room are elegant and impressive, they have the well designed, classical wow factor actually all too rare in London. The service is impeccable, and the food first class. It's not cheap, but it is all excellent across the board: tasty, classy, fresh and well judged.

Excellent service with knowledgeable staff who are engaging and attentive. We celebrated my partners birthday at Spring and couldn't be happier. Despite the challenges wracking the hospitality industry, Spring appears to have navigated the challenge in staffing and really did provide an excellent service. Highly recommended.

Table for 4 all opting for the scratch menu. At £20 per head the dishes were full of flavour and colour. French wine bottle at £40 was a bit steep but as we saved per head for the food courses it worked out well.

Incredible Scratch menu from 545pm - 630pm. Beautiful restaurant. Top notch service.

Based in one of the wings of Sommmerset house, Spring could so easily have been a run of the mill F&B outlet catering to the West End crowd. Instead, it the restored 19th century Drawing Room, Skye Gynell (formally of Petersham Nurseries fame) and her team have created something really special. Working closely with biodynamic farm Fern Verrow to bring the UK's best produce to London, this is expensive, elegant and dripping with a style. We had the 'Scratch Menu', a zero waste menu, changing daily and with limited available - Tuesday to Saturday between 5.30pm and 6.30pm and is limited to 30 guests per evening. At £30 per head, this is an excellent value for the space, and their ongoing work with Food Waste charity Felix Project shows their commitment to this area.

Eating out doesn’t get much better than this. Proving that using quality ingredients, gets you quality results. All of the dishes were very good. The service had a good balance of friendliness and professionalism. A great experience all around.

A hidden gem of a restaurant in London. Tucked away in the passageway next to the Courtauld Museum is this amazing restaurant. Pricey but worth a reservation either for lunch or dinner.

We had our wedding reception at Spring and it was perfect. The private dining room is fantastic for an intimate wedding and the staff went above and beyond to ensure it was a great event. They were also excellent with little children who were attending the event. The venue is also fully accessible which was perfect for our guest in a wheelchair. The food, wine, and service were incredible - highly recommend this venue for a wedding reception.

Waiters and waitresses were so kind on arrival, and fantastic speedy gentle service all the way through. The food was some of the best I have ever had from the cusuines. Generally the vibe was fantastic, will bring my family over next time.

We came across the Arum restaurant by chance as were visiting the Barber in London Exh, and so glad we did. The staff were lovely and friendly and the food was absolutely delicious; we had 2 salad choices plus meat or fish at a very reasonable price.

Three of us enjoyed a celebratory lunch at this elegant restaurant. Service was friendly and attentive, and the ambience buzzy but relaxed. Portions are more generous than I've come to expect - we were tactfully discouraged from ordering two side dishes, a pleasant change from upselling. My trout came with roast beetroot and a green sauce, delicious and nicely presented. I can't comment on the price as the meal was a birthday treat but I gather the bill was less than expected. Highly recommended.

This is one of my top 3 London restaurants for delicious food. I've always had the Scratch menu made from 'leftovers'. Imaginative, extraordinary cooking. Get the waiting staff to tell you about sourcing their ingredients. Book an early evening meal for the Scratch and be surprised.

Had a lovely dinner at Spring last night, Served very well and not intrusive, lovely room with a nice atmosphere, the restaurant was full but it didn’t feel rushed and had a relaxed atmosphere. The food was very good the highlight for me was the marinated Trout with citrus and chilli very well balanced and delicious Ive taken a point off only because the portion was just too small. The Halibut with Clams and beurre Blanc cooked to perfection delicious, my friend had the Sheep’s cheese tortellini with truffle butter sauce she said were delicious however again could have done with one more especially at £40 a portion. The slip sole also perfect, I had a lovely selection of Cheese to finish which was perfect and she had a chocolate torte with an absolutely delicious bark ice cream. Bottle of white wine to accompany and a couple of large Calvados and coffee, very enjoyable evening, roughly about £120pr head which is about average.

I’ve been to Spring previously and wasn’t overly impressed. It felt expensive and the service a bit cold. So much so that I wasn’t eagerly looking forward to returning when a friend booked it. But I was pleasantly surprised as this time the service was very friendly, helpful, informative and lovely in general. The cocktails were great, my ricotta dumplings were delicious, as were the crispy potatoes. Others said the fillet and Guinea fowl were also amazing. Then we had the custard tart to share for desert which was incredible. Would now come back!

This restaurant is undeniably stunning to look at but the menu is not quite to my taste. Still, it will make for a very impressive date location, so I recommend visiting at least once. There was no background music playing when I visited so go with good company 😅 I had a main of lamb. Dessert with kumquat and orange wine. Wine lovers will be glad to know that the wine list is quite long here.

Beautiful interior with with an airy room with high ceilings. Slightly cramped layout in the middle of the room. Opted for the lunch selection- down side: no choice unlike most restaurant with two or three items per course/ also no vegan or vegetarian option - single dishes offered per course. As the lunch option looked less than interesting- we ordered the bread and the meat selection as a per 1st course. Bread was good and meats were average. Cocktails was good- nice twist of the usual classic but did not have the coffee infused whiskey which two in the part ordered. The waitress who serves us was abrupt, miserable and always in a rush and therefore dropping items when clearing the table. Food was good: the beetroot soup: excellent, onglet: food, was more rare then medium- rare and the accompaniment of veg was disappointing. The desert of rice pudding and goose berries didn’t take out fancy so we ordered one to share- turned out to be quite nice.

We tried the scratch menu at Spring. It's a daily changing three course menu to minimize food wastage. We loved this ethos and it was amazing value for an upmarket restaurant. If you don't have any food restrictions or allergies it's a great choice

Beautiful place to have a lunch out. Reasonable price as well. We had 3 course meal on that day. Professional and polite service, enough space between tables. The ingredients they use all supplied by themselves, I personally very fond of this food ideology so would recommend.

The food was delicious, the setting was beautiful, and the service was great. Only one veggie option and the vegan option being a reduction of the veggie option was disappointing and outdated. That being said the veggie option was very tasty! Could do with some soft music in the background for atmosphere.

Calvin Tarlton

Beautiful dining room with a minimalist vibe. Had the scratch menu and the starter was exceptional. My paloma cocktail was also delicious. Unfortunately, the rest of the meal was good, but not great. The dessert, in particular, was disappointing. Overall, a good experience, though, and worthy of trying again.

*Creeping service charges a stain on an otherwise great meal* Had a lovely pre-theatre meal in the beautiful setting here. The 3 courses were tasty, especially considering the price at £30/head. We were happy to bump up the bill with some good wine. What leaves a bad taste however, is the creeping service charge increase. Whilst it's written at the bottom of the menu, the rate of 13.5% is conveniently left off the bill, merely described as 'Discretionary service charge', with no mention it's 13.5% as opposed to London norm at 10 or 12.5%. Really? Please, just pay your staff a decent wage and increase the meal price if necessary. Luckily the service was delightful (especially our Spanish waiter), so I didn't want to ruin an otherwise lovely evening. But I am left conflicted as to whether I would return. It's not about the 1%, it's about the way places are trying to push up the 'discretionary service'.

The menu here is ambitious and maybe trying a bit too hard. Flavors work, but overall presentation is flawed. Service and ambience is outstanding. Carpacio was from a cut so tough that it was hard to cut with knife provided, although it tasted lovely. Main course of veg dumplings was stodgy and like eating massive rounds of solid, dense goat cheese, although sauce was heavenly. The wine list is thoughtful and matches food well. I would come back and perhaps try set menu next time.

Would avoid for a la carte. The food was very tasty. We had the scratch menu which was a fixed, random 3 courses. We enjoyed each one and for £35 for 3 courses it was quite pricey but good. The main thing is the atmosphere however. Very echoey and quite stark environment with little character. A warning however - the a la carte prices are 35-40 for a main. See menu in photos. And make sure to sit on the outside or a booth. The middle is very loud even when empty and no music.

We took the Scratch menu which is literally pot luck! Excellent margarita cocktail. The salad starter had no flavour and the green stalk was too chewy; the fish main was simple and tasty but indistinguished for a quality restaurant; the desert was the best, both well balanced flavours and textures and creatively presented. Staff were welcoming and informative, especially about the restaurant’s green credentials - seasonal food sourced from known supplier, no food waste - food reused creatively in the Scratch menu, no plastic anywhere. Raising the bar for food standards. Maybe more thought given to simple flavours.

Very good food, although fully priced and with a couple of misfiring elements on the dishes. My major gripe was with the service which was aloof and unfriendly. Why oh why do these ‘fine dining’ restaurants constantly misjudge the service!? Most diners want warm, friendly staff who speak to us like human beings, not terrified and undertrained automatons who can’t relax and enjoy serving food to diners. We had the ‘scratch’ menu (we had to ask for it, it wasn’t offered) and whilst it was good, the strained ambience in the dining room and the lack of warmth from the staff meant the meal was less enjoyable than it should have been. The wine list was also underwhelming - I always think you can tell a good sommelier by the house wine they choose. Using that yardstick, the sommelier at Spring needs to have a word with themselves.

D
David Carnochan

Large open restaurant with some lovely grand period features. Unfortunately rather busy, noisy and lacks any ambiance. Service was adequate but it seemed the staff were slightly stretched and it took a while for them to take a drinks order. Staff were pleasant but lacked any sense of personality and the experience seemed a little soulless. Food was generally very nice especially the steak but side dish of roast potatoes were slightly hard. Salad was just bare leaves and cost £12. Dessert was uninteresting and could have easily come from M&S with a bit of sauce dribbled over it. Given the high prices (£40 steak +£12 side dish), I would expect better. Overall OK but left underwhelmed.

J
J H

I was really excited to eat here, but it disappointed. My fish was over cooked and a gentle complaint about this went totally ignored…and no, this was not a situation of eating the entire dish then complaining - I left 2/3rds of the fish, but they just didn’t care. The fritto misto starter contained just one piece of squid, but numerous slices of deep fried onion masquerading as squid - maybe they were running low on the night.

N
Noxolo Pule

Beautiful restaurant, decor and location. My husband and I had a very sub-par dinner: service left much to be desired; my seasonal sole was undercooked and my husband’s beef check was under-seasoned. Margarita was good and the restroom was beautiful (silver lining). Manager was checking on most tables but did not come to ours to figure out our experience. Disappointing for a restaurant that promises seasonal goodness and a true farm-to-table experience.
