Opinions de Moon Kee New York
I am so happy to have an authentic Cantonese restaurant in the upper Westside. Went for dim sum with my very Chinese family. The dumplings had the tender skin and the duck clay pot casserole had that nice crispy rice on the bottom. Wonton noodle soup was a little under salted but the noodles were crisp like they should be. Overall very happy with our meal and this place will be a regular place for us. No need to schlep to Flushing or Chinatown for authentic Cantonese cuisine anymore.
The best dimsum in uws! Probably the best outside of Chinatown. They serve authentic hk/Guangdong cuisine. We are regulars and get great service every time we dine in. Good prices with lunch specials even on the weekend. Dont miss the fun dinsum cart on Sunday !
I’m almost confused as to why there is such an authentic Cantonese spot that opened up in this location. Servers are all Cantonese. It’s as if they pulled the staff and the entire restaurant and just opened it on the uws. With that said, servers will be yelling to each other 😂 Been here twice now. Love the clay pot rice. And also the dining atmosphere is very nice, especially for a Cantonese restaurant. Good lighting, nice decor.
Delicious and authentic… the soup dumplings and eggplant have the best flavors. Yummy pot of tea as well. Coming back to try more … it all looks divine! Service is warm & welcoming.
I absolutely love it here! This place provides a real canto dinning experience. It reminds me of my childhood. Always will come back for clay pot rice 🫶🏻
Nice to find Cantonese food in the area. Enjoyed the noodle soup w duck and pork and the congee. Will be back to try dim sum.
Moon Kee Restaurant fulfilled my expectations completely. I've yet to find comparable service quality. Moon Kee Restaurant maintains quality that deserves recognition. They provide recently prepared food displayed skillfully. Regardless of the wait, this restaurant is worthwhile.
Fantastic Cantonese food. Like having old-school Mott Street in the neighborhood. Great dim sum, terrific roast meats, and a+ noodle soups. Update: talk about obscura, they serve seremban siew pau as part of their weekend dim sum! Delicious!
Have only done take out but the food is consistently good, it’s hard to find quality Chinese food on the UWS! I also messed up an order and called the store and they were super nice about fixing it. Would recommend!
So delicious. My children, husband, and I devoured the dim sum (the steamed dumplings, soup dumplings, crystal shrimp dumplings, and steamed chicken with mushrooms in rice wrappers were among our favorite). The duck and clay pot with chicken feet and short rib were splendid. Wish we lived closer or that we could take the whole restaurant home to Connecticut. The staff was so friendly, too. We hope to return soon!
The staff is friendly and attentive, and immediately brought us a pot of fragrant tea. Perfect for such a frigid day! We ordered A6. B.B.Q Favourites Combo and chose the crispy roast duck, crispy pork brisket, and roast pork. The food arrived promptly and all the meat was tender and flavorful, but the crispy pork brisket was out of this world, with a savory, caramelized crust and layers of rich, well-seasoned fat. Just a heads up, the duck has bones so be careful. We also enjoyed their beer, which was smooth and not at all bitter. Great food and service, we highly recommend!😊
This is the best crispy pork I have ever had in New York City, and its affordable too. Try the BBQ Favorites Combo, two choices (If you are a party of one for cheaper options), and go for Crispy Pork Brisket and Signature Crispy Roast Duck. Totally delicious. If you are still hungry, you have to try the Steam Shrimp Siu Mai and Signature Pork & Shrimp Siu Mai. Legit!!!
I have eaten here two times over the past three weeks, after finding out of its opening from a friend's recommendation. First and foremost, I am a bit of a BBQ roasted duck connoisseur and I can say that the one they prepare here is the best that I have had yet in the city(among 22 different restaurants so far that I have sampled). They actually go through a very particular, time-intensive dry aging process(other restaurants tend to use a shortcut method for this step) with their birds that yields a beautifully crispy skin that is just to die for and meat that is seasoned so perfectly, bursting with juice and flavor. Everything that I have had here has been absolutely delicious thus-far. The food is so fresh and the atmosphere and service are completely inviting. Their noodle soups are wonderful and their signature clay hot pots, you cannot get enough of as they are so aromatic and just a real treat. For dim sum choices, everything is made on the spot and their dumplings are just so delicate and thin. I could go on and on but what I will say is this......"the Upper West Side has an "A class" spot for those wanting delicious, beautifully prepared, Cantonese food." It really is one of the best in all of New York City will not remain a newbie, "hidden gem" forever.
They have the best scallion pancakes, perfectly flaky and not oily. I’m usually not a fan of pork, but I tried the pork chops and they were tasty. We went for a late lunch, the restaurant was fairly quiet. Great service too.
What a delight! We had a lunch of dim sum, about 6 or 7, ordered by our friend originally from Hong Kong who now lives in the neighborhood. It's exactly what an authentic NYC neighborhood Chinese restaurant should be
I’ve lived here for over 12 years, I can’t believe today my first day. The soy sauce chicken is delicious, but the duck is spectacular. Can’t wait to be back for dim sum. The roast pork buns are delicious.
Excellent dim sum on the UWS! Sunday brunch crowded but a lot of carts and everything was great. We eat a lot of dim sum and this place is legit. Dinner food very good too. Very good roast meats. Great place!
Eaten here a bunch of times, with others. So glad it’s here. Sticky rice, Shu Mai (both kinds), har gau, rice roll, turnip cake—all very solid. Char siu noodle soup was also good. Eaten a lot of dim sum elsewhere, good and bad. This is very solid. The staff are courteous and very prompt. It’s not too loud, but it has some of the dim sum bustle, complete with carts. It’s not dirt cheap but you can easily find more expensive dim sum that’s not as good.
It's an absolute new gem for the UWSiders! Behold, a "sit down" and enjoy the Chinese cuisine as it was once back in the 1960s feel. The food we tried was dim sum and noodle duck soup. Excellent! The tasty broth was very hot, as expected in any authentic Chinese foody places. The dim sim was flavorful and hot! We stack this place to Big Wongs on Mott Street for their Wonton roast duck noodle soups and Regal Seafood also on Mott St. for their dim sum. We strongly suggest trying this 💎!
Bring a horse, I think this restaurant should be better than Hong Kong. This rest is a gem. They are using the traditional way to do the food here ( all the best chef from hk had moved to us and uk). I am so lucky to find them here !!! The authentic childhood Favour. I cannot find it in hk anymore.
This Cantonese style restaurant (I tried roast duck) is just as good as the very famous Yat Lok Restaurant in Hong Kong. I have tried them both, and I would tell you they are the same in taste. It's a lifetime opportunity if you are traveling in NYC and a pilgrimage site if you live here. Go for it.
We visited before the lunch rush, so it was not busy when we arrived. It got lively about the time we left. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted with warm welcome immediately by a staff. We got a nice booth seat, and a staff brought us complimentary hot Jasmin tea for us. We ordered a few things to share. One of them was from a Lunch Special Menu, that comes white rice, Vegetable Spring Roll, and choice of a soup. We went with Egg Drop Soup with Sweet Corn. Our choice of the main was Sauteed Bok Choy with Garlic. It had loads of garlic and tasty. The lunch special is a really great deal. Crystal Shrimp Dumplings. The wrapper was shiny, and slightly see-through. Each dumpling holding one large, super plump shrimp inside. It was pretty darn good. Roast Pork Rice Roll. It was really good with pork that is packed with flavor. Pan-Fried Pork & Shrimp Chives Dumpling had a nice crispy top, but still plump and mochi-y. It was satisfying and comforting. Stuffed Eggplant with Mince Shrimp looked interesting, and different from what I expected. In the middle were bits of shrimp, kind of sandwiched between two ends of the eggplant. Not really “stuffed” but it was still really good! Deep Fried Pork & Dry Shrimp Mochi was very crispy, doughy like mochi, with sweet flavor. The filling was juicy and delicious! We had a really nice lunch here. The staffs were very efficient and friendly. We enjoyed every dish we ordered, and the price was great too. We would definitely go back again.
Dine in and Takeout. Both times the food was very delicious. The place was beautiful and clean and comfortable. Decorated tastefully and well. The people were very friendly. All in all a good experience.
All the best authentic Chinatown Chinese food in one store. All the Dim Sum are freshly made on order. Ingredients taste fresh. Recommend if you want a taste of Chinatown in the Upper West Side.
I was hesitant to try this restaurant but I decided to give it a chance based on word of mouth. I went on the weekend for dim sum. The food was authentic and very satisfying, and the congee was especially good—rich and creamy. This is now my favorite dim sum spot in NYC; I’ll definitely eat here every time I visit.
Moon Kee Restaurant, NYC - A Hidden Gem for Authentic Flavors If you're in search of authentic and delicious food, look no further than Moon Kee Restaurant in NYC. The flavors here are truly exceptional, making each dish a delightful experience. One of the standout features is the generous portion sizes; we ended up taking home enough food for an entire feast the next day! And your wallet won't have a big hole in it. While the decor may not be the main attraction, and the service might not be overly exuberant, the focus here is undeniably on the food. If you’re a fan of bold flavors and hearty meals, Moon Kee is definitely worth a visit. Come for the great flavors, and you won’t leave hungry or unhappy!
wowza I'm very hesitant to try chinese food in case its not as good as its supposed to be. wow i'm glad i tried this place. prices are very reasonable, portions are excellent, and service isn't the nicest (which means the food is going to be amazing). the deep fried mochi with pork is probably one of the best things i've eaten in a long time. if you like savory sweet - get it. the crispy pork is crispy yet fatty yet moist while the duck is juice and skin so crispy. only thing to nitpick was that the duck pieces they gave in my bowl were not very good cuts (little meat). will be back!!
When they say crispy, they mean crispy. Entrees: Sweet and Sour Pork, Shredded Pork in Garlic Sauce, Sesame Chicken, Crispy Sesame Beef, Kung Pao Chicken, Crispy Orange Beef. Dumplings: Pork Soup Dumplings, Shrimp Shumai, Pork and Peanut Dumplings Higher quality food compared to your standard "pictures on the wall" Chinese restaurants. I appreciated the friendly and accommodating staff. Made me feel welcome and excited to return. Wife likes their Hot and Sour Soup. I prefer their Egg Drop Soup with Corn. My favorite entree tried thus far is their Sweet and Sour Pork. Wife's is the Soup Dumplings and the Kung Pao Chicken. Next visit, I would like to try the crispy fish filet with salt and pepper, the congee, and their noodle soups.
After several months of takeout and dining in I’ve come to the conclusion that this is the best overall Chinese spot in the hood. It’s not a cheap hood spot that you hit up for the ultimate NYC staple: the wings and pork fried rice combo. It’s not fine dining either. If Ollie’s is mid level, this is a notch above. Their consistency is what sets them apart and at the top. Their service when dining in is stupid good. Friendly and accommodating, but more importantly they speak English well. The true tell tale sign of their excellence is the amount of Chinese people that actually dine here, which is plenty every time I’ve stepped inside. It’s one thing if it’s just random Asians but actual Chinese people means it’s really authentic Cantonese. The meats: BBQ pork: 4/5, Roast Duck: 3.75/5 Roast pork, with crispy skin: 4.25/5 Yes, I'm comparing every meat to Ollie's, because where else around here is there meats on hooks behind the window as you walk by? Here and Ollie's, Karen. The dim sum on the weekends is the best in the neighborhood. Their dumplings are just ok though- wrapper is too thick and fillings are mid in flavor and quantity. The beef ribs are the move. They even come around on carts like downtown but the ladies aren’t mean or worse: indifferent. Hmm, there’s a pattern here. The owner is here most of the time. This guy is very dedicated and you can really tell hospitality comes naturally to him. He runs a tight ship. The vibe of workers to owner is a two way street of respect, it’s clear he treats them well. In return, not only does that show in the service but more importantly- it shows in their products. Love this spot.
One of the best Chinese/Cantonese restaurants around the neighborhood! Price is reasonable and all the dish we tried were amazing. We went there on Friday for dinner at around 6pm. There were still some tables available but the restaurant got packed pretty quickly. Roasted duck was so juicy and will definitely try again. Great we have this restaurant so we can taste authentic taste without going all the way to China town.
I spent my childhood in Hong Kong and try to visit every year. I'm always on the lookout for good Cantonese cuisine, so I was thrilled when Moon Kee opened in my neighborhood. Hong Kong restaurants have a unique energy, and I immediately felt it upon entering. The staff recommended some dim sum options. They even shared that they made their own soy sauce and what items were coming out in the cart next. The food was fantastic, including the dim sum, barbecue meats, egg tarts, and clay pot rice. It definitely satisfied my craving for authentic Chinese food until I can return to Hong Kong. I plan on returning to Moon Kee and would highly recommend it to anyone looking for delicious Chinese food with an authentic touch in the Upper West Side.
Great place to dine in. They put out a full pot of tea for the table, which is great coming in from a cold night. Staff is quick and friendly, and care about the quality of the experience. The scallop dumplings, and roast duck and dumpling soup were very good. Walked about 35 minutes here from The Met and was very happy.
Amazing addition to the Upper West Side. I no longer have to go down to Chinatown to get my dim sum fix in (they’ve got the dim sum carts on the weekend too)! The atmosphere and service are great. The food is fresh and delicious as well! My favorite items include the shrimp dumpling, pork&shrimp shiu mai, shrimp rice roll. I’ve been back 5+ times and will continue to do so. Love this place!
Super authentic Hong Kong experience, I’m thankful it opened in the neighborhood so I don’t have to trek to Chinatown. Staff was very friendly and took good careful of my 2.5 yo. Took the family last night and everything was a hit, definitely will be back for rice rolls (silky and smooth), the wonton noodles (authentic and has “bite”), roast pork. Can’t wait to go back for clay pot rice.
I have gone for both dinner and lunch special take out and can confirm their food is amazing! The portions are generous and the food's quality is exceptional. They have a great lunch special and offer it 7 days a week! I recommend trying their roast pork and wonton noodle soup with the bamboo pole noodle, or any of their clay pot options. Their dim sum is fairly priced and they offer a wide range of options. Their wait staff is attentive, friendly, and accommodating. This is a family friendly restaurant and so they have high chairs for babies and do everything to make sure children have a great time as well. (They even made a bowl of cut up noodles for our baby to enjoy with us!) Wishing this place success.
We had a very pleasant experience on Sunday Feb 15 , 2 pm at Moon Kee. It was a party of 10 at one of the round tables, for a birthday. Some people were quite hungry, so we started ordering dim sum right away from the trolleys that were making the rounds. All of the dim sum dishes were excellent. The main dishes that came later were also on point: well cooked, tasty and quite large portions. Very few of us were able to finish our meals; many take-away containers were required. The staff kindly helped us serve out a birthday cake that we had brought in. My only small critique, which brought the atmosphere rating down to 4 stars, was that our table, which was the round one closest to the front door, would get blasted by a cold draft whenever the door opened. I recommend that they install some sort of windbreak entrance as you see at many restaurants. Overall, a delightful experience, large quantities of delicious food at reasonable prices. Will definitely be going back, and will recommend to others.
good dim sum; good place in the area, been dozens of times and have taken my family as well. have catered from here for events and they are also very nice and timely as well. few weeks ago, server charged me incorrectly (not intentionally) but it was fixed promptly, so maybe mgmt can just make sure bills are done right even when its weekend service. overall, its a great place!
Dinner with the family - everyone left happy. Staff was friendly and food was brought out fast and hot! Chose a large variety of menu items - dim sum, clay pot, duck - something for everyone. My favorite were the little black pepper ribs (from dim sum menu). The place was packed (with quite a line!) and tons of delivery guys there to grab take out. Wouldn’t think twice about going back again. Pretty sure they’ll take a res for a large group and I’d do that for sure if we were meeting friends. Casual vibe with lots of energy. Shout out to the staff (not that many people but wow do they work the room!) who were able to handle the rush with ease and grace! Fun night out!
This is the best Chinese food in NYC, certainly better than anything in Chinatown. The duck soup is fantastic, as is the beef chow fun and sautéed string beans. In fact, it is the best duck noodle soup I’ve ever had. The restaurant is always clean, bright and service is amazing. Worth the trip from midtown east just to eat here.
Moon Kee is easily one of the best spots for Chinese/Cantonese food and dim sum in NYC. The dishes are consistently fresh, flavorful, and authentic, and the dim sum menu has that perfect balance of classics and unique items you don’t see everywhere. Everything comes out hot and well-seasoned, and the portions are generous without feeling heavy. The service is quick, the prices are reasonable, and the overall vibe is relaxed but lively, exactly what you want in a great dim sum spot. If you’re craving quality food in the city, Moon Kee is absolutely worth the visit.
Best Chinese food on the UWS. A quick delicious lunch with soup for $15 is a treat... with leftovers! Generous portions. True test is the old crowd favorite of crunchy steamed broccoli and tender orange beef. Perfect. But you will find there are lots of Asian patrons who order their favorite dishes here no doubt because it tastes authentic. Am so glad to be back home in NYC to eat here, try new flavors of dumplings, roast duck and a wonderful array of other dishes from this welcoming place.
As a devoted dim sum lover, this is my favorite spot in Manhattan. The food is incredibly fresh and authentically made, but what truly moved me was tasting a real Hong Kong-style herbal soup in New York. It’s the kind of soup that takes at least 12 hours of slow simmering to extract the very best essence of the ingredients!
Very Authentic Cantonese Food, Glad to have found a spot that tastes like food back home (HK). I ordered the Wonton and Braised Beef noodles, Pork Ribs Claypot rice, and Choy Sum(Vegetables). Wonton was big with shrimp and pork in it, you can taste that it's the freshly made and not frozen ones. Braised Beef was tender and there were many pieces in it. Noodles are just like the wonton noodles in Hong Kong, cooked great, a bit chewy. The clay pot rice was made to order and came burning hot after cooking it over the fire. Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes.
Long overdue review. I discovered Moon Kee soon after they opened 2 yrs ago. My BFF lives on 103rd so it's just 2 blocks away. I can't believe there is an **authentic** Canto restaurant up here! I grew up in LA, lived in NY for 6 yrs and now in No CA. Yes I'm an ABC, but my husband was born in HK and I know good authentic Chinese food. They even have BBQ meat hanging in the windows and people yelling in Cantonese to each other, haha. Sign of authenticity in a dim sum place. The only "non-authentic" thing? It's very very clean, no food stains on the chairs or tables but I haven't seen the bathrooms (I know I'm risking offending some ppl on here...it's a *joke*). There are always lots of Chinese ppl in here too. I was hungry after flying in from CA and why spend $7 on a ham and cheese croissant heated in a microwave when you can have 3 gao choi gao (shrimp and chive dumpling) cooked fresh for the same price? Look at the size of the shrimp! And you can sit in a clean booth with a/c (it's 90 deg outside). They're really nice and weren't upset that I just ordered $7 worth of food. Very good service. I've been here ~7 times and everything has been excellent. The big test for me in any dim sum place is the wu gok (taro dumpling). Many reputable places have other excellent dishes but their wu gok tastes of ammonia meaning old taro. Or they're really oily. NOT here - they're crisp, made of fresh taro, and not oily at all. The dan tats (egg tarts) are perfect- flaky crisp dough. They just told me they are hand made here and the chef has over 30 yrs experience making dim sum. I told my friend about this place and now her family gets food from here all the time. Someone mentioned the prices- ummm look at where they are. And it's not more than what we spend in SF and some places in NY Chinatown.
It was our first time to dine in here, it was nice, staff are approachable and friendly, the bathroom is clean, its a big plus as always. My daughter and husband loved the shrimp shumai and dumplings it was made fresh and in house. Its a must try 5/5 The beef noodle noodle soup, it could have been better, i would rate it 3/5 Scallion pancake was a let down 1/5, the texture is off, we were hoping for a flaky chewy scallion pancake and their version is not my fave Coconut jelly 5/5 my daughter and i love it! Not too sweet, the texture is amazing
Delicious and authentic Cantonese food on par with the best in Chinatown. Very friendly staff, clean and spacious environment. The Sunday dim sum carts serve up piping hot dishes. Come with friends and family for a feast or 2-3 dim sum dishes for a quick, healthy and delicious brunch.
Very delicious dim sum with fast and friendly service. We came here at 3pm on New Year’s Day, and it wasn’t super packed. Our first time trying authentic roast duck, we were surprised that it is served room temperature, so just a heads up for anyone ordering (it says it on the menu). The chicken congee was so delicious
The dim sum here is delicious. The best we’ve had in a long time. Everything was delicious. My favorite was the pork soup dumplings (d4). My wife’s favorite was the deep fried pork and shrimp mochi (d27). We also got the pan fried turnip cake (d25) and it was amazing. The sticky rice with pork in lotus leaf (d7) was cooked perfectly and had great flavor. We also got the roast pork rice roll (d20) it was great too. Honestly, everything was great here. Very friendly employees too!
Beautiful atmosphere large tables though would be nice with a tablecloth. Service is attentive and bring out food very often, and food is delicious. Better than chinatown and as good as dim sum in Vancouver. Lots of flavours and meat is very tender. Has cantonese flavours so it is very authentic and tastes authentic! Very pleased. Good price as well
Thank you! We finally have delicious dim sum on the UWS! My family and I had rice paper shrimp rolls, shrimp crystal dumplings, pork fried dumplings, chive dumplings, orange beef and the BBQ combo platter. All was outstanding. The service was friendly and efficient. We WILL be back. I can't wait to try the taro dumplings. Please expand your beverage selection!
Moon Kee has authentic Cantonese dishes. The Clay Pot Rice is a must try with delicious roast pork and rice that crisps up on the side. The Seafood pan fried noodles were crispy and the seafood mix was fresh. The salt and pepper pork chops were perfectly fried. The service was very good as both the owner and wait staff gave recommendations as to what to try. They also had hot tea which was perfect for the cold day.
A welcome addition to the neighborhood. I enjoyed my crispy orange beef lunch special ($14) although the portion, as usual, could be bigger. The decor is clean and attractive. I’m not sure about the roast ducks hanging in the front window but I suppose that’s a reference to its Hong Kong/Chinatown roots. I think it will do just fine.
Went there for dinner and wasn't disappointed. We had the Shrimp Shumai, shrimp dim sum, general tso chicken and the spring rolls. Everything was delicious 😋 the atmosphere is good and the service was top notch. Greatly recommended place for authentic Cantonese cuisine at an affordable price.
This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in the Upper West Side. Quality is consistent, and service is friendly and fast. I enjoy both the dim sum menu and the regular ala carte items. The only one item I have found to be overpriced for what you get has been the claypot rice. Other than that, I like it!
Food was good. Sweet and sour chicken: chicken was cooked well and seemed like better quality than other places. Sauce flavor was not amazing. Everything else was pretty good and authentic Hong Kong dim sum. Staff look professional and you can tell they work hard. I have to be back on the weekend to try the baked pork buns! Yummm
Excellent beef chow fun! Perfectly seasoned and great portion. Noodles are super silky, not too salty and the beef is tenderized well. The crispy duck wasn't as good so would pass on that. Food comes out quick!
Foods are okay. Nothing stands out as amazing, but most items are fine. The rice clay pot we got tastes a bit strange, to be fair, we were ordering when they are about to close.
Quite authentic Cantonese cuisine! Probably the best between W80 and W110. However the dim-sum dishes are not really to my standard (e.g., frequently stuck with the container, flavor not strong enough). Nonetheless, other non-Americanized items on the menu are very good. I will definitely revisit the place or order takeouts in the future.
I was told that Ruth Reichel raved about this restaurant, so I decided to go. I'll start up by saying that there was a pot of good Jasmine tea. My friend ordered a clay pot or meats, egg, and two pieces of broccoli. He liked it, and I tried it and liked it. On the other hand, my order was not so great. The hot and sour soup was not terrific. I ordered beef and Chinese broccoli, unaware that what I would get was mostly stems with only the stumps of the leaves. I know enough to say that the leaves contain the nutrients. I brought this to the attention of the manager, and he passionately defended the dish on the ground that it is traditional. It’s not. I wouldn't order it again. The small spring roll was not hot and only fair, and the hot and sour soup was underseasoned and didn't have tree ear or lily pad stems. Also, the restaurant was empty when we entered, but it took more than half an hour for the main courses to arrive. On the strength of my friend's dish, I'll go back and order differently.
When I first walked in I was greeted by a tallish man with a button down white shirt and bald head. He was super friendly and kind and I instantly replied with a smile and felt very welcome. He had no way of knowing it was my first time here and the place was very busy but his greeting seemed authentic. He asked if I was just a party of one and I concurred and I was given seating by a lady. Where my dinner seemed to turn a little sour is when two men in front of me were having trouble figuring out what to order and asked another server for any recommendations. The server waved them off quite rudely and walked away. They looked completely baffled and just stared. I was pretty confused myself and thought maybe the guy didn’t understand them so I waited until he was nearby to explain to him that the customers needed help with ordering and he did the same exact thing to me. Completely waved me off and walked away ignoring me. I was not happy. I understand the place is busy but unless this isn’t the culture in this particular restaurant that should be unacceptable. I didn’t feel comfortable going to home with any needs I may have had after that. The first guy is the reason I may come again, but the service I experienced from him trying to remedy someone else’s is likely why I will not. Or I’d request a new server if I did. I prefer the hot peppers with minced shrimp and it was delicious. The steamed dumpling with shrimp and scallop were okay and the fried pork dumplings were good as well though it was a little doughy.
The food here is consistently good. The sesame beef tonight was tough, but the chicken was very tender and tasty. The problem with this place isn’t the food it’s the atmosphere. The manager who works tables is very nice but incredibly LOUD. He walks by table talking to people across the restaurant in a booming voice. All the surfaces in the restaurant are all hard with nothing to absorb sounds. The older guy who buses the tables throws dishes into his cart and rushes around like they are closing at any second, despite the fact we came in at 7 pm. He is also contributing to the extremely high noise level. Our female waitress was very nice and was mercifully quiet. Conversation at the table is very difficult so if you come in to eat here, wear ear buds unless booming voices and constantly clanging dishes are your vibe.
I ordered pickup from here for the first time. I got a lunch special. The spring roll came in the same container as the hot food so it was soggy and greasy. It also did not come with any duck sauce or mustard for it. The sauce was all settled at the bottom and was too thin to really stick to anything. The chicken was bland and the broccoli was very undercooked. The rice was made well. The star of the show was the hot and sour soup but unfortunately they did not fill it nearly to the lid so it was only a few spoonfuls. The restaurant seemed clean and the order was ready quickly which I really appreciate. If I did go back again, I would probably stick to the dim sum.
I have ordered from here many times in the past and have never had bad experiences. Tonight my order included the minced beef rice roll and pork soup dumplings. Instead of minced beef, the rice roll contained a very unappetizing mush of meat, almost like a paste. We could not eat it. I’ve ordered this dish from Moon Kee before, and tonight’s version was very different. The pork soup dumplings we got were undercooked- the dough was still too chewy. I called the restaurant and they were very accommodating. They offered to bring me a new rice roll and soup dumplings, but since I did not want to gamble on another rice roll, I asked for 2 orders of soup dumplings. They agreed and it was delivered to me fairly quickly. The replacement soup dumplings were cooked appropriately and tasted better. I think they used to include more than 4 dumplings in an order, or at least they used to be bigger. 4 dumplings of this size for $10 seems overpriced compared to most restaurants. The sesame balls from here are always delicious!
This would be a great place if they didn't use MSG. It's almost tragic, because they make such excellent food, but the MSG makes it impossible to eat (for me anyway).
From all the positive reviews for Moon Kee Restaurant, and my reason for trying out this establishment, I can not believe that we received "nasty" tasting and ill prepared food. On 10-12-24, I did a carryout worth $79.00. Considering fried rice is $18.00 (plus tax), not only is it not cheap, the rice was obviously not fresh (very soft). Maybe even heated up several times before being placed in my order. The Roast pork was old, fatty and tough. The General Taos Chicken was old and soggy with the batter peeling off of the chicken. The ONLY item that was decent was the Chinese Broccoli (fresh). With the exception of the Broccoli, I was ripped off and will report this to the proper authorities. When an establishment does things like this, they will never be successful. I do not believe when eating in the restaurant, would they have served this food to a customer. Needless to say, not only have you have lost me and my family as customers, my friends will not support this establishment again. Shame on you!!!!
Quality regarding food unfortunately declining. Sauce less flavorful, dry broccoli like cotton in my mouth and serving size shrinking. Started out so good for long time. Have been long time customer. Tried to run this by owner of restaurant who actually said he doesn’t care. Such a shame. The owner really gets so upset if you give him any feedback that’s not positive. He raises his voice and yells at you. You’d think he’d value customer feedback but it freaks him out it seems. If you check many of the lower ratings here, you’ll see many reviews describing his temper and lack of caring about any feedback that’s not a compliment.
Dim sum cart is extremely dangerous. It is gas powered and it lit up in flames as it was going to each table. Absolutely terrifying. After this happened, staff couldn't care less. Charged full price and didn't ask anyone if they were okay.
We wanted to eat here so badly but when we told our server that we have a gluten allergy, she told us not to eat there because they don’t know which meals have gluten… how can you not know that information?! That was extremely disappointing.
the waiter will suggest high tips for you instead of letting you decide independently (the lunch costs 12 around and he ask me to pay 3 for tips its 25percent)
Staff was extremely rude. Tried to rush me and company out of store and had an attitude over splitting payments. One of the workers physically threw his hands up and his head back in frustration after being asked if we could pay half on card and half in cash. Food was mediocre too.
Got kick out because I stood up for a delivery server lady was nasty respect ever so when she try to give me the same vibe I rise my voice and put her in her place they void my order… also manager had under control but when server lady was going crazy already be respectfully to ur delivery any deliver pls avoid this let make them understand deliver are import for restaurant have respect
Quality of the food has drastically declined, at least for the weekend dim sum cart brunch. Spent around $40 for a few dishes and all were essentially inedible. It seems that others may feel the same, as the place used to be packed for weerkend brunch, and now was quite empty. Won't be returning,
Came in for lunch often but the server always gets mad why inquire about sugar content other menu. Today was a horrible experience especially when I get assaulted by a server by not paying enough tips. The server wants a street fight after the payment. (2 dollars short on tips for the bad attitude) called NYPD and filed a complaint. Please avoid this restaurant at all costs.
