I had the spicy big tray chicken. Served with noodles, which I didn't order and I guess it was a miscommunication with the waitress, but it wasn't much extra so I'm not complaining. It was massive, enough to feed two medium appetites. And importantly I thought it's amazing - - ridiculously flavorful with the cumin, mala, and (more subtly) star anise. Here I am pretending I know what went into it; I'm probably missing other key flavors. There's no decor to speak of, which I think made me like the place more.
The best Chinese restaurant in Manhattan. I highly recommend it. There is always a wait, but it's worth waiting for what you are about to eat. I ordered the pepper chicken, white rice, and a pork pancake on the side. It was incredible. The service was great! Even though it was a small hole in the wall, I enjoyed my experience, and the portions they serve are big. I enjoyed my experience and will definitely come back for more
Tiny little Chinese restaurant, Chinatown vibe. Don’t let the name fool you, there’s plenty on the menu that’s not spicy. But if you do like it hot, this is the spot for you. The place is very cheap, even for Chinatown standards, and it’s tiny so you might have to wait (I don’t think they take reservations). Great service and attentive staff. Excellent food.
I love it here! Great place to have a casual little sit down meal outside with a friend. I recommend the spicy big plate chicken with the hand pulled noodles added :)
I have to hit up Spicy Village every time I’m in New York. Since I started going a few years ago, I think I’ve been back at least twice a year (I live in Maryland and have no relatives in NY btw). Their big tray chicken is the best (better than the one in New World Mall in my opinion) with hand ripped noodles. Their pork burger also reminds me of my childhood in China — great porky and fat flavor and I don’t even eat pork 99.9% of the time because I don’t like the taste. This is just too nostalgic I guess. Then a few years back Eater did a video on them and it became impossible to get a table on a weekend night. I always try to go during the week or at least a lunchtime. They have very limited seating. They had BYOB and have a per head minimum which is low (maybe $14 a head or so?), but their food is so cheap we had to order a ton of stuff to hit that. But hey, more leftovers for me. There’s a liquor store (or beer and wine?) right around the corner which is very convenient.
On a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon in NYC's Lower East Side, I traded the comfort of tortillas for something equally soul-warming. Menudo was the dream; Spicy Village's Omasa Hui Mei became the reality. Don't let the name mislead you—the heat is more of a slow burn than a fire alarm. These hand-pulled noodles? A love letter to culinary craftsmanship. The tripe sings an offal truth that'll make any meat lover grin. Not a tripe fan? They've got oxtail. Plant-based? There's room for you too at this gastronomic roundtable. In a city that never stops, Spicy Village offers a pause—a bowl of comfort to break the chill. A different home, perhaps, but home nonetheless. #SpicyVillageNYC #LowerEastSide #EmbassyofTacos #NoodleGameStrong #RainyDayEats
This place is cash only, so make sure you have some before heading in. They also do not have any alcohol but if you want to bring some beers all they ask is you spend at least $12 a person on food. Which is probably what you will spend anyway. We came here after an escape room, everyone in the group was happy with their meals. The spicy noodles are their specialty and are delicious.
DELICIOUS!!! We got the chicken and added hand-pulled noodles which were amazing. The red oil dumplings were seasoned perfectly though the dumpling skin is on the thicker side. Beware that the “soup” dumplings weren’t very “soup”-y, but we’re still good. The chicken deserves more than 5 stars though. Will be back for it!
Spicy Village is a small restaurant a bit farther out from the central Chinatown area, with limited seating (more suited for small groups of 1-3). My partner and I came on a Friday night and waited just 5 minutes before getting seated at a shared a table with another party of 2. The staff were really nice and friendly, and the service was quick. We ordered the oxtail hui mei, which is listed as a dry noodle but it still comes with a good amount of broth. It was a bit spicy, which paired well with the well-balanced flavors of the broth, noodles, meat, and veggies. The hand-pulled noodles tasted pretty fresh and soaked in a lot of the broth's aromatic flavors, but they did get soggy pretty quickly. The oxtail was excellent— tender, flavorful, and fell right off the bone; I wish it came with more! The price ($12.75) was pretty good, and there are many cheaper noodle options on the menu too. Overall a solid spot for flavorful Henan hand-pulled noodles! — Price (relative to peers): 4.5/5 Food: 4.5/5 Ambience: 4.5/5 Service: 5/5 Overall Value: 4.5/5
Spicy Village is known for their fresh, hand-pulled noodles, particularly broad, homemade, wheat noodles. This spot is a hole in the wall, no-frills restaurant serving Henan-style cuisine. We ordered their spicy beef brisket noodles, the beef pancakes, and homemade steamed dumplings. The noodles, you can get in either soup or dry. They have a nice chew and bouncy texture to them - rich, hearty, and filling. We ordered the bowl with tender beef cubes, where you can definitely taste the cumin spice through these noodles. The steamed dumplings are filled with pork and scallions - a little savory, a little sour, a little spicy. For the pancake with beef, the breading is crispy and the beef they use in every dish is very tender and savory. A great spot to try traditional Henan flavors in Chinatown! Spicy Village (68 Forsyth St B, New York, NY 10002) Open Mon-Sat 10:30am-10:30pm
The food was absolutely fantastic. If you are looking for authentic Chinese food, this is the place to go.
Hole in the wall well-known for their big tray chicken. Very limited seating so takeout is recommended. I ended up getting some beef noodles to go for lunch. Food came fast and tasted great. The broth was flavorful, noodles well prepared! And the whole meal was happy for your belly and your wallet.
This place is small (in a quaint cozy kind of way)but the service and food are out of this world!!!! Very friendly helpful and attentive staff members. Every staff member said hi and greeted us as we entered. Food order was taken when we placed our names on the waiting list. This allowed us to enjoy our meal as soon as our table was available. The food is like nothing I’ve ever had. Amazing flavors that continue to develop as you eat it. Recommend trying everything they offer you will not be disappointed. You will leave full and satisfied. 😀🍜😀
One of the very best Chinese restaurants in NYC--it's a local favorite! The foods ideas are simple, but the complexity and execution of the dishes make it amazing. Try the pork bun, spicy chicken Hui Mei (in dry pulled noodle section), and if you're with a group of 4, definitely get the Big Tray chicken--you can get it either rice or noodle; DON'T BE AN AMATEUR and get it with rice, order the noodles, you won't regret it. I'm not particularly sold on the soup dumplings :/ but the rest is tremendous! Best thing is it's BYOD!!! 🤤
*Update 8 years later: funny enough, we picked the same place again, not knowing that it was until looking up this old review. And I’m adding another star because it was absolutely perfect. They work so hard to move the line (there always is a bit of a line) to get you to a warm table, and already take your orders outside on the sidewalk so the service is super quick. Excellent service, fantastic food, you cannot beat the value! (Just make sure you stop at an ATM first as it’s cash only. And BYOB). 2016: We wanted authentic Chinese, and we definitely got that. Hole in the wall in Chinatown, make sure you make a reservation and show up on time. The food was perhaps a bit too authentic for our not all that adventurous family. The hot and sour soup tasted a bit soapy. The dumplings and sesame chicken were great. The best thing was the price. Nowhere in New York could we feed a family of six for well under $100 but there. It's bring your own alcohol, so make sure to remember to stop at the corner store for some beer or wine if you want that with your meal. It was also nice that we didn't ever get rushed, even though they could have seated another party right away. The service was very good.
We loved this place. It is very small and cash only. If they don’t have a table ready they have you wait outside and order prior to your table being ready then seat you once the table is available. We ordered the big chicken tray, soup dumplings, and the scallion pork chili dumplings. Everything was very tasty & perfect to share. The big chicken was falling off the bone & the flat noodles were cooked perfectly. Really loved the chili sauce the pork dumplings were in just the slightest spice (I could have had more spice but extremely tasty)
Get the big tray of chicken. We were a group of 4 and only wait 5 minutes. Please try their food it is delicious!
This spot is a gem. Had to wait a bit since it was very busy. Small space inside but line is moving quickly. Be careful if you cannot handle spicy food since many of the dishes have chilli oil. You can ask to adjust the heat. Really liked the beef brisket with noodles. Meat was tender and good for those who cannot eat spicy.
This place is a real gem! I have been craving the food here weekly. Those well spiced dishes are just so satisfying. I used to go to Xi’an famous but after my friend recommended this place to me and I tried it first time, this place has had my heart and stomach! Updated 11/13/21: I went there for lunch today and had a pancake with spicy beef which was just perfect. I also had spicy chicken hui mei. I was planning on getting a spicy big tray chicken today but the nice lady there successfully talked me out of it again! 😄 She said I won’t be able to finish it and I’m glad she insisted on me not getting it. But I’ll get it next time when I go there with a foodie companion!
Spicy Village is a Chinatown classic! The food is bold, flavorful, and full of that real homemade taste. The famous spicy big tray chicken is amazing — tender meat, chewy noodles, and the perfect amount of heat. Everything feels authentic and satisfying. The place is small and no-frills, but the flavors make it totally worth it. A true hidden gem for anyone who loves real Chinese comfort food! 🌶️🍜🔥
I had a little time to kill today so I searched for a spot to eat at and Spicy Village came up on my map. Really glad I found it. I ordered the pancake with beef and oxtail noodles. Everything was really good. I wish the pancake was a little hotter, but it was quite tasty. The noodles were thick and filling. Such a good spot to visit on a cold day. My only gripe was I spent $22+tip. I understand inflation is hitting hard.
Love this place! Truly a hidden gem in Chinatown. This place gets packed pretty quickly because there are a lot of tourists. It has also gained a lot of popularity because it was featured in the 2020 Michelin Guide. When you come here you have to get the big tray chicken with the hand pulled noodles. That's what they're famous for. It's good enough for two people, but wish there was a little bit more noodles. We also ordered the triple salad that had cucumber salad, seaweed salad, and tofu salad. It's a pretty nice refreshing side to cut the spiciness at times. We also got the pancake with beef and the spicy scallion sauce with pork dumplings. To be honest, we enjoyed the dumplings the most! The sauce was really tasty and not too spicy. I wish there was more meat in the pancake but overall a good place to go in Chinatown!
Flawless the noodles are perfect the flavors are THERE. The pork pancake is one of the best ive ever had. The spicy chicken trayyyy like hellooooo. The dumplings are hot and fresh. Great spot.
This place reminds me of the classic hole in the wall gems my dad used to take me to in Chinatown. Great food, sassy servers and no frills tables. Always craving their noodles. And their playlist is the best, all the songs I grew up with. The line is a tad annoying but glad they’re seeing success.
Undoubtedly one of the best Chinese food I've ever had in all of NYC and also while traveling. We had a pretty big portion of spicy chicken plate with curry and handpulled noodles, steamed vegetarian dumplings and another plate of grilled pepper chicken with rice. The taste was straight out of China/India, great spices and blend. Super delicious and felt like home food. The prices are also very affordable, considering the portions were really big. Highly recommend if you're in Manhattan/NYC Chinatown area. In the daytime the place is not so crowded but my friend told me that peak hours can be crazy with long queues - so keep in mind. Also: only cash!
I can't say anything about service/atmosphere since I ordered takeout, but the lamb hui mei (a type of noodle soup) I got was amazing! Honestly I didn't have very high hopes for it because it looked very plain visually, but the more I ate, the more I liked it. The broth is this beautiful creamy color with a rich lamb flavor but not too gamey. The noodles paired so well with it, and the vegetables added the necessary crunch. All the dry ingredients are simple, but that broth really ties everything together. Would definitely order again!
We were seated outside, which was our preference since it was really nice weather with a bit of rain. We ordered lamb noodle soup, beef brisket noodle, and fish balls. All of them were delicious and at first we thought they were too much but in the end we finished everything. We arrived there at around 6pm and it was quite busy and after we were seated the line got longer. This is not your regular ‘Chinese’ food (like Cantonese or Sichuan). The lamb soup taste was so comforting, the beef brisket was a bit spicy (but in a good way), and the fish balls were so good and tasty. Just like how I had it when I was a kid. Service was friendly and professional. Would definitely recommend this place. Cash only establishment.
The beef brisket hui mei was incredible! Thick, fresh noodles. I took it to-go and ate it about 30-45 minutes later and it was still warm!
The food is delicious so much flavor and options, I got the pork soup dumplings, spicy chicken huimai, and beef pancake. All i recommend to get😋 . Also very nice customer service, but There is also limited seating with a small space and around 15 minute wait which is worth it! Will be coming back to try more food👍
Been wanting to come here for years and it did not disappoint. Food was delicious and surprisingly cheap. I had the beef pancake and spicy chicken huimei (dry hand-pulled noodle). The staff were very nice and accommodating too. Highly recommend.
If you are thinking of eating here, definitely do it. This is one of the best spots in Chinatown that is worth the hype. I can only speak to the Big Tray Chicken (with extra wide noodles) + dumplings; the former is a unique dish not to be found elsewhere, while the second are the best dumplings I have had at a sit-down restaurant. Service is very quick and friendly. There may be a line, but turnover is quick - do not let is scare you off!
Tiny place but pretty okay to wait. If you are looking for small + sketchy feeling restaurant for date night. I feel this is the best place. Their food are really great but figured it’s mostly about msg. Our group drank so much water after the dinner but still happy because it was really good.
A bustling Chinatown gem that instantly transported me back to China with its street side and lively energy. The Spicy Lamb Hui Mei featured wide, chewy noodles coated in a fragrant, spicy sauce that was satisfying and comforting. Not necessarily a spot I’d rush back to, but definitely worth trying for an authentic, no-frills noodle experience.
I finally tried Spicy Village after spending loads of time in the area. I've been thinking about it ever since. The food lives up to the name - very well spiced. I got the vegetarian dry noodle (fully vegan), and I was blown away, and the portions are huge! You will wait a long time for your food if you order takeout at peak times, but it is worth it.
amazinggg comfort food and reasonably priced! The service was fast and the food came out quick. We tried the hand pulled noodles, vegetable scallion dumplings, pork bun and the pepper chicken rice. Everything tasted great and the noodles the portion size was huge for the noodles. Be informed that they accept cash only!!
Dry black bean with pork noodles tasted so much better with chilli oil, the beef noodle soups tasted too kelpy at first but it grew on me and it feels good for your soul and health. Pork pancake was my favourite. Cash only js annoying but there is an ATM inside a little grocery store around the corner.
Absolutely loved this spot! Got there on a weekday around 9pm so it was pretty empty. We were seated quickly and got our orders in. The food was so excellent! And you can get some drinks of your own by the nearby bodega. Sure, I saw some rats scuttle by (in the distance) but it honestly added to the charm of it all. For me as a first time visitor, it was truly a hidden gem.
Easily my favorite vegan chinese place in new york city. I travel there several times abl year for work and order from different vegan chinese places every time. Their general tsos and kung pao is perfectly crispy and the dumplings are served in this spicy chili oil that is incredible. They keep the sauce separate from the veggies so they dont soggy in transit. I ordered delivery and have never been to the location in person, so I can't comment on service or atmosphere, but I look forward to ordering from them again next time I'm in new york.
flavor is decent and not what you would expect, very savory noodle shop with handmade noodles that have bouncy texture and flavorful broth. broth. the food comes out hot, and the place is not for spicy crave but for savory tastes. very bustling also and service is attentive and quick and decent pricing
I went today around 1 pm and waited less than 5 minutes for a table. I got the beef pancake and spicy chicken soup and omg… amazing. The hand pulled noodles were so fresh, chicken was tender and the beef pancakes were so warm and savory. Both dishes tasted delicious with their chili oil. I cannot wait to go back!

Hidden gem in the neighborhood. Love all th broth. The service is excellent. I've been coming here 3 times a week. The prices are amazing.

Quick service and very affordable food - like, are we still in Manhattan?? affordable. They use mostly plastic / disposable plates and utensils which does not jive with my low carbon footprint diet style (flavor of the season) but I also ate beef here so I’m being a little bit of a hypocrite. Went on a Saturday early (before 6pm) and this small place (really small, maybe 8 tables total?) filled up fast. I enjoyed the food. Ordered two dishes (#26 Spicy Beef Brisket with hand pulled noodles and A3 Sesame Chicken with rice bc somebody who was not me wanted sesame chicken) and a plate of dumplings (7A Spicy scallion sauce pork dumplings) which was way more food than we shld have had or eaten. Place seemed BYOB but we were fine with water. Total with 20% tip was ~$30. It’s more of a homey place (hole in a wall) than a place to enjoy the finest Chinese cuisine. I think this is more of Sichuan cuisine (thus the name Spicy Village). I love spicy food and take heat well so it was not spicy for me, but for those unaccustomed to spicy food, be aware! I would go back for their famous Spicy Big Tray Chicken! Serving size is LARGE so order accordingly. Also cash only.
This rating for Spicy Village is entirely attributed to their famed spicy big tray chicken, which was plentiful, perfectly flavored, juicy and delicious. The hand pulled noodles were good although the portion could've been bigger for the two of us. The dine-in experience however, was horrendous. We waited an hour to be seated (arrived @ 6PM on a Saturday), ate with our jackets on as the door kept opening, and the worst part was the people waiting in line inside were pressed against our table, breathing over us as we ate. On the plus side, the service was friendly. But just do yourself a favor and get takeout.
If you are looking for a spicy Asian meal to salivate your taste buds, look no further. This cozy restaurant sits about 22 customers and was packed when we arrived. The menu is typical of northern Chinese cuisine. We had the Spicy Big Tray Chicken with a side of hand pulled noodles, Pork and Vegetable Dumplings and an order of the Soup Dumplings. There was plenty of chicken and the soup base had tons of peppercorn making for a spicy combination. We weren't impressed with the dumplings though. The soup dumplings had no soup inside and seems to be commercially made. We had some beverages to keep the spice levels down from the big tray.
Spicy Village, unlike it's name, is not very spicy. They are well known for their chicken dish in the last picture which you can add rice or noodles. However like a typical Chinese place, it stressed me out too much because it's tiny so they always end up rushing you out the door. It's BYOB but it's a $12 minimum.... Which means it's a lot of food. Decent food but not a place you linger. Eat and get out or they kick you out.
A small restaurant in Chinatown that serves a lot of Chinese noodles dishes. I ordered the Spicy Lamb Huimei ($11.75) and Pancake w. Pork ($5.75). The noodles were decent but I was not amazed, but the pancake w. pork (also known as a Chinese hamburger) tasted delicious. The service was great and they are cash only. The pancake was a bit on the expensive side, but still not expensive. Overall, I would rate this place a 7.5/10 - I wouldn’t have any urge to revisit, but if I were to be in the area I would show up to enjoy a good bowl of noodles + Chinese hamburger.
In Chinatown, NYC, there are lots of Chinese restaurants... ok, this is not a very good introduction, I know... 😂 Yet this is true. And finding the best option in all this offer is kind of mission impossible... Google is here to help, though, but does it really help? Well, somehow, it told me that, in the Lower East side, slightly outside of Chinatown, there is a small and affordable restaurant called Spicy Village that has good reviews. But I failed to see that the restaurant is always packed and that I would have to wait outside for... 45 minutes, maybe?.. because the venue is so small you can't barely move from the door to a table. The waitress initially told us there was no room and then she told us to wait... or so we thought, because we couldn't really understand what she told us and I'm pretty sure she didn't understand us either. Anyway, we managed to get inside and get a small table for the 3 of us (my wife, my son and I). And we started ordering. The tricky part was that my son does eat spicy food at all... but we basically ordered everything else. And it was way too much. It would have been nice if they had told us to stop before. But for the price, ordering too much wasn't really a big deal: we paid $50 for the 3 of us (no desserts... but none needed) and ate a lot. This is very cheap for NYC. And we ate good and unusual dishes. Honestly, next time, I'll probably get there at the opening time, but I will definitely go back. Just keep in mind that they don't accept credit cards... My first dinner spot after a long travel day to New York and the food did not disappoint. So comforting and warming — I highly recommend the pancake with beef, steamed dumplings, and black bean sauce hui mei noodles. Every dish is handmade with care which honestly adds to the charm of the run-down but cozy atmosphere. Will be back to try more!
Get the spice scallion sauce pork dumplings!! 10/10. Ordered these as a starter and then the lamb hui mei and the beef brisket hui mei for our mains. Decent noodle dishes but nothing to write home about. The diners seated beside us ordered the big plate chicken, and I will definitely be trying this next time. Small place with very little seating, but we were able to get a spot right away. Popular spot for all types of people.
Excellent food quality, friendly staff, and loved the Big Tray Chicken dish. The Seafood Hui Mei soup itself is extremely flavorful too, and the Beef Hui Mei had chunks of good tender beef with the noodles and bok choy. Only down side is that the restaurant is very small and you are squeezed almost shoulder to shoulder with other tables and chairs and there’s barely enough room to walk in and out. Otherwise, it’s a great affordable location for noodle soup!
The prices here are great; but despite having "spicy" in the name, we did not find the spicy items that we ordered to be all that spicy, although they all had great flavor. We got the dry pulled noodle brisket, the spicy scallion sauce pork dumplings, and pork pancake. I'd skip the pancakes next time. It's a cash only establishment, so come prepared.

My friend and I decided to go here because of all of the great reviews. There was also a pretty long wait for seats so we expected great things. However, it did not meet our expectations. The pork bun was really good but the rest of the dishes was not flavorful enough. It was a bit lacking in taste and flavor.
Hit and miss! The pork dumplings were the best I've ever had! The pork was shredded - not ground. The fresh colantro was perfect. You get a lot of dumplings for the price. but the spicey chicken soup was bland as could be. The menu noted "hot". On a scale of 1 to 3 it was a spice level of 0.
Honestly. Mediocre. It's just hype. The location is quant. Love the home and authentic feel to it. The broth is bland and had to use alot of Chilli oil to try and bring out the flavor. The soup dumplings were good but taste like other dim sum places. The seating is limited and can maybe fit 15/16 at most at one time. You'll have to get a number and wait outside. If you speak Cantonese, you can cut the line 🙄 I get it. The location is cash only. It looks like it's also BYOB. Regular drinks aren't over priced. The price overall isn't too bad and not city competitive like most places.

I ordered the Lamb Hui Mei - I’ve got noodles in boiled water with a few pieces of meat without any flavors or spices, even unsalted! I love Chinese cuisine, so I was very disappointed. Also, I ordered dumplings, but they served 11 instead of 12 (as listed on the menu). The dumplings were delicious. And the restroom was unclean.
You get nearly thrown out before you finished because the Village is so tiny that there is no space for other guests. The dumplings where great, but the sour soup tastes horrible. The spicy chicken was more sauce than anything else. Bony, meatless, fatty chicken pieces with crushed sharp bones inside. Not good. Price ok, but not as cheap as it was.
Food overhyped in my opinion. Maybe because it’s cheap people love it idk I don’t get it. And the women working there totally ignore you when you walk in, if it’s your first time there you won’t know what to do. You just have to grab a table with other people. Order at the register.
