Opinions de Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem Pub Paige
Unforgettable historic pub that claims to be the oldest inn in England, with a history dating back to 1189. That claim has been debated, but what is certain is that this pub is a must see, with a unique atmosphere resulting from its location partly within a large rock face. It's immediately clear on arrival that the pub is something special, as you walk through the narrow doorway and are met with tables set within sandstone caves. It's quite dark inside and there isn't a surplus of space, but this all adds to the atmosphere. The staff were helpful, food decent value and service was efficient. Even at a fairly busy time the food wasn't a long wait. The drinks selection had something to suit most tastes, and I couldn't fault the fish and chips - crisp batter, chunky chips and a generous portion size. Outdoor seating provides extra capacity, but I'd advise finding space inside to get the full experience.
Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is worth visiting for the history alone. It is carved into the rock under Nottingham Castle and the cave rooms make it feel properly old and atmospheric, not just “old style” decor. You can imagine the centuries of stories in there, including links to crusaders. Food is alright and the place could look a bit smarter in spots, but that is not really why you come. It is more about having a drink somewhere genuinely different and full of character. Not perfect, but memorable and definitely worth a stop.
Visited for the first time for a Sunday roast. Best to go before 12.30pm so you can get a table and the Sunday roasts are still available. Ordered the beef roast and beef croquettes. Delicious and reasonably priced. Service was splendid. Inside the pub was literally still like a cave. I will definitely go back again.
What a fun place to visit. This is a very old pub built into the rock that was the foundation of the old castle at Nottingham. Allegedly this is the oldest pub in England dating back to the Crusades. Whether the tale is true or not, this is an exceptional stop if you’re in Nottingham. Great food and atmosphere and you’ll have a fun story to tell your friends. Cheers!
Well, what can I say, if you like to eat well and eat in a place where it takes you into the past as soon as you cross the threshold ...This is for you ! I fell in love even before I came in. ...The food was really all very good.😍
It was very easy to give this historical 12th century pub nestled into the caves of Nottingham Castle a maximum rating. I received very good bar service and a generous discount being a CAMRA member. The bartender was quite knowledgeable about local ales and some of the history of the pub; even the regular customer propping up the bar, was keen to chat about both subjects. I can imagine that as autumn becomes autumnal with howling winds, the cooler temperatures and the long nights, this pub will be a gem for supernatural thrill seekers. Will definitely return very soon!
Geat pub loads of different rooms to explore. Loads of history. I went on the weekend it was very busy loads of seating outside but you need to sit inside really to see. Pints about normal £6-7 only stopped for 1 as it was too busy.
This pub was the main driver behind my trip to Nottingham and it didn't disappoint. Absolutely stunning inside out, oozing character and history. Decent selection of beers, nice and friendly staff. I have only detracted one point from the food simply because one or two elements of my order weren't brilliant (eg. the onion rings - very average towards bad, sadly) yet most of it was really nice pub grub. This is one of those places that have turned into proper attractions and it's no coincidence you see them first in photos online when you google the place (Nottingham, in this instance). An absolute must visit.
After visiting the castle and surroundings places stoped here 1st just to take photos and check out the pub but ended up having late afternoon meal. The food was tasty and the atmosphere gives it a cosy and nice vibe. Best was seeing people talking and not with their faces glued to the phones. It's a little tight inside but that's what gives the pub a charm, combined with it beenig carved into the hillside. The staff was very nice, good service. The pub was clean and despite beeing full no bad smells inside. The bar offers a nice variety of drinks. Outside seating with plenty of tables and an inside smaller court. The outside seating comes in handy in warm sunny days to enjoy food and drinks with friends or family. There's on street paid parking next to the pub. Will be returning when visiting Nottingham again.
Attractive pub both inside and out. It's built into a sandstone rock which makes part of the pub feel like a cave and there are two levels with nooks and crannys. The food looked good although we didn't eat there hence no rating for food. The ambience of the place was good as was the beer.
Well this really is a very special pub to visit. Its an absolute gem of a pub carved into the sand stone of Nottingham Castle. Its possibly the oldest pub in England but wasbis for sure is the warm welcome from the staff who are very friendly and knowledgeable of the ales and beers on offer. Lots of great seating inside and out and super fine ales. The beer choice really is very good. I look forward to coming back again soon.
Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem is a great little pub. It is partially underground set in a cave, so a very interesting setting. There is a really good menu catering for almost everyone. Vegetarian, and vegan options available, and for people with specific allergies. The food arrived promptly, and was delicious, as well as generous. Very friendly, and attentive staff behind the bar. Great range of beers and ales. Must go back as I only had two! The others look very inviting and attractive to lovers of Real Ales. No complaints at all. Highly recommended.
It was so cool to have Sunday lunch in the oldest Inn in the UK and it was amaizing that half the place was carved into the rock that nottingham castle is build on. The atmosphere was great, the decor was interesting, there are so many different types of spaces where you could sit according to your taste, the beer was so good and the food was excelent. We had a great time here just relaxing, eating and drinking. The app to order was so easy to use and even gave me a free beer for joining. Go on spoil yourself, have a pint and a meal, you deserve it!!!
Quaint, historic establishment well worth a visit or two. Delicious dinner menu in a seriously impressive interior (beware the over 60's or partially sighted, you will need a torchlight to illuminate the menu offerings for you, and to find the QR code for ordering your food otherwise you may find yourself hungry and awaiting service). The outdoor area is also hugely pleasant to sit outside for a drink in fair weather, with the enormous petunia hanging baskets providing extra eyecandy and entertainment.
Recommended by a friend in Ohio, and what a recommendation! I had lunch after touring Nottingham Castle, which I would recommend as Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem is in a cave under the castle. Like all structures of this era, the ceilings are quite low and the stairs and rooms are quite twisty and full of surprises. The staff was so nice and efficient. I ordered at the bar downstairs and had my meal delivered to a table on the next floor (see video). I’ve taken many trips to the UK, and frequented many establishments with signs claiming the “world’s best fish and chips.”. The fish was amazing and perfectly prepared. The chips were not greasy at all, and very flavorful. The highlight was the fresh peas! Bursting with flavor. I rate the fish and chips second only to the Mayfair Chippy in London, however, the ambiance and experience takes it over the top even if you’re only slopping by for a pint.
Great experience, bit of wait at bar but to be expected as is such a popular place. Booked table for food and had to change choices couple of times as they had run out of first (and second) choices. But when food came was hot and really tasty and not a long wait. All ln all a must place to visit.
