Opinions de Cactus Grill and Cantina Potsdam
Food is fantastic, always worth the wait and family friendly. The front of the house waitstaff are very attentive, helpful and accommodating. And the margaritas...let's just say it is difficult to have only one! Well worth the experience and the staff make it that much better.
A fun place to get Mexican. The margaritas are great. The portions of salsa and guacamole are enormous. I had and enjoyed the Shredded chicken burrito. I would love more Mexican hot sauce options our a house made one. That's the only thing missing. Otherwise we will absolutely go back when back in the area.
We had a wonderful dinner in a terrific Potsdam landmark. My wife and I had not been to the Cactus Grill and Cantina for many years. The staff was very attentive, the service was quick, the food was great! A wonderful place for an evening out.
A coworker suggested I stop in for dinner and I am glad I did! The atmosphere was very clean and family-friendly. I enjoyed a fabulous burrito bowl at the bar... I was pleasantly surprised by the food portions as well as the fresh taste and presentation. The bartender and staff were talkative, fun, and checked back frequently to be sure I was taken care of. I will definitely be back!
Delicious food & excellent service! It's a fun loving environment. I'd definitely order again
Great as usual, very friendly and attentive staff. Party of three, I had the taco salad with shredded chicken, very generous with guacamole and sour cream. Shell was perfectly cooked. Shared a pitcher of the house margarita, also very good. It's a slow time of year here in late June with most students gone for the year, it gets really busy on weekends. This time we quickly got a great table over the river outside. If you don't mind climbing stairs and the weather is good, there are also tables on the roof, giving a cool view of the village. Not surprising, but service was slow up there the one time I went
Took my wife here for her birthday party. The staff was amazing and I do mean amazing. They went above and beyond my expectations. They hid my cake and present for my wife brought it in as a group and made noise and sang happy birthday which I didn't ask them to do. Very awesome. On top of that the food was great. I highly recommend this place. And if any of the servers read this, thank you so much. You all are the best and helped make my wife's birthday one to remember. Thanks for everything. :)
This is a great spot for some Mexican food in potsdam. A huge selection of flavored margaritas as well. Very large and free shared parking lot across the street from the front door.
This is my wife's favourite restaurant. While I don't often like Mexican food, Cactus is the rare exception. The enchiladas are always great, and this is one of the only places that does Fried Ice-cream. We drive two hours to come up here and eat, and we're never disappointed. The restaurant is cramped, and doesn't have a ton of space. Be mindful of where you're sitting so your chair doesn't get hit constantly. While we almost always have a great server, there have been times servers not handling our table have been inconsiderate. Overall, after years of coming here I can safely say we will continue to do so for years to come.
I was in town for work and was told to stop by Cactus Grill & Cantina for their margaritas. I had a wonderful mezcal margarita out on their patio and got to enjoy the perfect weather. Jacob C was my server and was very kind and attentive throughout the meal. I’ll definitely be stopping by for another marg next time I’m in town!
Second time there and it is becoming a favorite. Both the San Cabo soup and Oaxaca soup are meals and excellent. Second time has the full rack of ribs. St Louis, not baby back so they are big and meaty. My college son couldn't eat a full rack plus huge beans and rice made for at least another meal. Highly recommend it if you have taste for Mexican. Plus a good rotating tap, had Bell's Two Hearted so that tells me there's a bartender who knows his beer.
I love the atmosphere here. Seating is super flexible to accommodate big parties. The deserts are so good also.
My family and I visited the night before my brothers graduation. Despite was I am sure was a long day for the staff, they were attentive and polite. The portions were massive, you could easily split a burrito bowl between two people. My parents shared the nacho's and had lots of left overs. My only critique was that the dine in area was pretty dark at night. Would definitely visit again.
This place is doing it right. I had the best Chile Relleno that I’ve ever had. Food was flavorful and the atmosphere is nice. The dining room was nearly full by the time we left, so I think the community at large is also a fan.
Haven't been here in years and, man, have we been missing out. The ambience takes you in as soon as you walk through the door. The setting and decor transport you straight to a Mexican locale. Our server, Andrew, was attentive, friendly, and understanding despite how busy the place was. Food was well cooked and seasoned. So delicious. The whole family loved it, which is a rare thing with our kids. Lol. Will have to come back more often.
Food and service both good. Street tacos were SUPER generous and great flavor. Great attention and refill on beers for us both. The atmosphere… a bit sticky in the floor department (“that’s what she said!”, 99% humidity, plus a WWII squadron of flys (judging their accuracy, possibly French) made their way into the main serving room to nibble on the food and my ankles. Nothing much to be done about that, hence a god review. But seriously. AC?.
Met a friend here for lunch on a Saturday evening. Although they were out of chimichanga, which is what I went there for, the fish tacos that I ordered were good Lupita, our waitress, was very attentive. We ate on the rooftop and had a large fish bowl drink of Cosmo Rita and mango margarita. From the rooftop, we can see part of the dam and catch a nice view of the sunset.
I want to love this place, the venue is great, the ambiance is solid, the staff is usually fantastic, the bar is a great place to hang with friends, but the food is honestly not the best. The menu has been the same since I was a kid, and no matter what meat I order it's always beyond spicy. Being a thirty something ordering a quesadilla is becoming embarrassing. Though they are delicious! The margaritas are also a major plus, every flavor, except butterscotch, is fabulous.
Margaritas were excellent, as usual! Nachos were on the smaller side tonight, which was a bit disappointing, as 4 of us were planning to split them. They are usually piled high with tons of flavorful toppings. Still were delicious, just smaller than we've ever had. Always a go to spot for great drinks and service! The smell of the fajitas in the air as we left, was mouth watering!! Definitely worth eating there again and again!
I've been here a few times. The staff are always pleasant and the food is usually quite good. The complimentary salsa that you get with the chips before your meal is really good. There is a notable lack of variety in the types of drinks you can order (I only bring this up as there is a bar).
This is an extremely busy place so it takes a bit to get your food. Since it is so busy it tends to get rather noisy. The servers are busy but do come buy to see if you need anything. Food selection is pretty good. I had the beefy burrito on this visit. I ordered it a certain way and it came just as I requested. It was very good. If you have a large group it is best to reserve a table ahead.
Our family stopped here for dinner while camping in the area. This place is festively decorated, and has a fun atmosphere. Service was excellent. Our teens thoroughly enjoyed this place. The food was good, tasted fresh, and was hot. We agreed that the overall taste was a bit bland, but was still good Mexican. To us, it was not authentic enough. The guacamole was made fresh, but lacked Mexican flare. Still, we all did enjoy our food, just hoped for a bit better. Worth a stop!
The food is good but it was crowded the last time I was there and it took 45 minutes for the food to come out. The atmosphere is festive and a little loud. That's great if that's what you're looking for but it's not the place for a quiet conversation.
Too hot! They need fans or AC! I got three tacos and they were delicious! Loved the pork carnita and barbacoa. The steak one was okay, but I won't get it again.
I’ve eaten at this establishment two times and each time was nice, however, the second time we ordered the queso and it wasn’t as I thought. I thought it’d be creamy and a little spice but it was just the opposite. Is the texture supposed to be as it was? It was stringy and you could see the oil as it slid off your chip when you tried to scoop it. I won’t order it again for that reason, now with that being said, the items I had when there were very delicious and very generous portions. I ate leftovers for several meals. It’s well worth the money.
Great place for some Mexican food and drinks. Nachos were great. Fajitas were also very good.
Visiting from out of town. The old building is cool. Originally a water treatment plant back in 1875 so it has some interesting throwbacks. There is a cool little outdoor dining area on the river that I found when I left. Lots of fun colors and Mexican decor. My nachos were HUGE! Like 4 people could share. They dont shirk on toppings either. There was a smoky flavor coming from something, maybe the beans. That flavor was a really nice addition. These are smoky nachos not spicy but maybe a non-ground beef option is different.
Rooftop dining? Yes. This place has turned this aged building and authentic piece of Potsdam building history, into a alternative dining experience for St Lawrence county. The server we had was on his game and the wait for the food to come out was very short. Drinks were refilled quickly and the view from the roof was quite nice. The climb to the roof top uses several staircases and the steps are tight. (It is an old building so it's to be expected). If you have problems with staircases you should opt out of the roof. I've been to MANY Mexican style restaurants and would have to critique the salsa as it was ok but just a little off in flavor. The beans were a little dry and tough. The portion size of the food overall was adequate. The tables and floors were clean and napkins were plentiful. Overall it was not a bad meal. We will return!
We had a quite disappointing meal the other day. We ordered the loaded nachos with me and the meat that was on it tasted to be a canned chili a very popular brand that probably everybody is familiar with. The chips were excellent the salsa was good. When I came to the burrito bowls the meat was undercooked and cold. we've been here many times in the past and always had an excellent experience so it was quite disappointing to have an experience like the one we had the other day. Staff was amazingly friendly very nice, they were trying to keep up on the cleaning and a disinfecting of locations and tables. The food is the only thing that was disappointment this time so we're not sure if we'll be returning..
Service here is hit or miss. One time the server dropped my meal and I waited about 15 minutes for my food to get there. Meanwhile the rest of my party was finished eating. Thankfully they had pitchers of margaritas to keep me happy :) Overall the food is pretty good (considering we are in upstate NY). It's also usually pretty busy, but I have never waited more than a few min for a table.
Pretty good Mexican food. Had to say salsa was good with the fire roasted tomatoes. Only complaint is atmosphere seemed a little off. They had a work like party in same room as diners and other parties which was kind of annoying. Chairs to table are not sturdy and old like. Need a decor makeover but food not bad.
I've eaten here twice. The food is very average. 2.5/5 stars. I ate it all but I don't think I'd eat here again.
Went on a date here with my husband. The atmosphere was nice. I would love to try the roof top bar. I ordered the beef fajitas and they were not very seasoned but they were okay. Next time I come here I’m going to the bar and just having drinks.
Positives: lots of mushrooms in my Portabello quesadilla, good salsa Negatives: tacos and quesadillas very greasy, chicken in quesadilla over done and burned, many salsa chips broken into pieces, NO AC! 😠 and many flies 😠 It makes me wonder how many flies were on our food in the kitchen 😒. I will never go back when it's warm outside.
Benjamin, our server, was excellent. He made sure we had everything we ordered/needed. It wasn’t super busy which was nice. Most of our food was good & large enough portions; but a little pricey. A few things that NEED improvement: 1. we don’t need 1/2 a container of sour cream on our plates when a small scoop will do; 2. PLEASE do NOT add cinnamon to everything & think that makes it authentic Mexican food because it DOESN’T; 3. The pico/salsa would be okay if it didn’t have cinnamon and had fresh tomatoes; ours seemed very mealy, bad texture.
I was very disappointed in my recent visit. In the past, the fajitas were always served with refried beans and guacamole. On my most recent visit the dish was served with day old lettuce, shredded cheese, and sour cream. When questioned, our server said he was not familiar with any changes. I might add that the chicken was very dry as well. Not up to the usual standards!
Server was great! Apologized for the long wait for food. But then the food came and my half rack of ribs was closer to room temp. Fries were cool with random slightly warmer ones and were getting that stale taste. My wife's bowl had meat (steak) that wasn't hot. Disappointed in my food when paying 130 for dinner and waiting longer than usual. Kids didn't complain. But also took there food home from filling up on chips while waiting.
Loved the food. I was in the mood for Mexican and Cantina hit the spot in that aspect. But overall experience ? Mediocre at best. They are undermanned when it comes to staff. Our waiter was serving like 10 tables by himself, and failing miserably. I had to get out of my seat a couple of times just for re-fills. I also asked for hot sauce when he brought the food (but never received hot sauce). I think it may be time to expand to a bigger restaurant, or add more seating. I felt like I was sitting at a bingo hall, shoulder to shoulder, waiting on numbers to be called. Be very careful when picking the time you come here. Especially if you are out to just enjoy a meal.
Hi. Food is okay. I’d rather have smaller portions that are really great so I could say “really great”. The place was dirty and smelled of heavy, rank alcohol spills all over the bar seating area and that was at 4pm when they open and tables not cleaned very well. And the tables in that area you can’t sit at without the staff trying to level the tables with napkins. Disappointed but still giving a 3 star because we don’t have many dining options here.
First off it smelled like a frat house basement when you walk in. Then we had to wait in the lobby for 15 minutes when there were many tables open. The table was grossly sticky. The little plates they put out for salsa were literally sticking to the table. And they leave the water glasses upside down on those gross tables when they set them, then fill them with your water. Yuck. The noise level is nearly unbearable. We almost left but we were hungry. The rooms are concrete with nothing to deaden sound at all. It's incredibly loud. Service was unpolished, but passable. Food was also decent, certainly not great or anything special. We wouldn't return. Update: I checked the health inspection reports after we ate there and, as expected, they were terrible. See my posted photos. Gross. The place is dirty and mismanaged.
The food was juicy and tasted good, but not very seasoned. If you're looking for authentic this isn't your place. The building itself is adorable with a lot of character. We sat on the roof and had chicken enchiladas and steak fajitas. The staff was very friendly. $52 for our two meals, 2 beers. Complementary chips and Pico.
I had a pretty good experience at Cantina. It’s always very packed, which can be a good and a bad thing. Because of this, the staff are friendly but very busy. One of the waiters is very funny. The food is mediocre and expensive, but it’s decent enough. Good drinks, very pricey. Too pricey. Discounts are the only thing worth going for.
there is a dead animal in the dining room. totally ruined everything. servers were amazing
Waited 40 minutes to get into here to eat, came here with 3 friends tonight. Ordered 3 burrito bowls and 3 tacos. They brought out the burrito bowls which looked good for my friends and no tacos waited about 5 minutes and finally the waiter came out and told me it'd be about 10 minutes for the tacos because they "messed them up". 3 beef tacos with lettuce onions and cheese... After an hour and twenty minutes waiting to eat here and get my food I finally decided to cancel my food and go else where. The waiter who tended to our table never came for refills or checked on how the food was and couldn't tell me what half the stuff on the menu was. Horrible experience
Nice atmosphere and a great waitress on my recent visit. But they just don't get Gluten Free at all in the kitchen! Even the salsa contains gluten via the "clever" addition of regular soy sauce. All the chips are fried in the same oil, the shredded chicken is seasoned with the gluten-containing green sauce. Get with the program, folks! I went with a friend who likes the atmosphere but I won't go again. Too bad - it would be pretty easy to make some fixes.
Positive: Super cool location inside of an old building. We sat outside on the deck overlooking the water, which was nice. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. Negative: If you've ever had good Mexican food elsewhere, you will not find the food here good. I know that this is in Potsdam, but there's still a minimum level of taste and quality that's just not met here. Portions were almost too big for us even with leftovers, and it just seemed like a lot of lower quality. For example, the guac was already oxidized, and they just throw a cup each of melted cheese and sour cream on the plates. Additionally, EVERYTHING has cinnamon in it - the salsa, the guac, and the meals. Perhaps it's because they use the US Cassia version of cinnamon (very pungent) vs. the Mexican Ceylon variety. Either way, this needs to be fixed.
EDIT: I loved this restaurant when I used to eat meat, but now as a vegetarian I am nervous to order anything there. After writing my initial review, I discovered that all of their beans are cooked with pork fat. I had been ordering the beans to substitute meat in my meals there for years before I found out... by finding a piece of bacon in my beans. The servers are not even aware of this so they had no reason to think to warn me. I saw someone else mention that they don't have any gluten free meals. The food is great and you will love it if you aren't a vegetarian/gluten free, but they really need to get with the program and modify their menu to make it more inclusive to people with dietary restrictions. ORIGINAL: Service is good. It is always very loud in here, so I wouldn't recommend it if you have sensitive ears. The food is always great, with very large servings... be prepared to have leftovers! The salsa and chips are undeniably the best. There are very limited options for vegetarians, even the chips are cooked with animal fat.
The WORST Mexican food I have ever had in my life, made me nauseous while I ate it. Queso and salsa were bad. Margaritas were subpar… cheap ingredients. Service and staff were excellent. Very nice people and ambiance.
Our server was great. Friendly, efficient, and knowledgeable. The margaritas were pretty horrible. The salsa had way too much sugar in it, no lime or cilantro detected . The food was okay, nothing amazing, no WOW factor. I can make better Mexican food at home. Everything was just kind of one-note. Sorry, guys, just relating my experience!
If you are looking for good food this is the place to go. However, it is very dirty. My partner and I got dirty menu’s. The menu’s had old food in them that weren’t wiped out. Like legit old food. And the silverware was dirty. I had to ask for a new fork. ALSO THE BATHROOMS ARE DISGUSTING!!! Especially the women’s. Only one door closes and it was gross. It felt like they hadn’t cleaned it in a week. The food is amazing though. Just bad sanitation.
Food was bad. Didn’t like the salsa, it tasted like it had cinnamon in it. I got the shrimp quesadilla and it tasted like they threw shrimp and a large amount of sharp cheddar on an oversized tortilla and called it a day. No spices. Their margaritas are good, though so giving it an extra star. Overall a little disappointing.
Extremely overpriced, first off the salsa had cinnamon?? all we got was the steak nachos. The nachos were poorly made, it tasted like they microwaved them. Not to mention, it tasted like the beans also had cinnamon?? as someone with a slight allergy to cinnamon, it was just overall unfortunate. the waiter was chill and helpful so that’s the only redeeming factor.
Wow. First time here and took an hour and a half to get our food and steak fajitas were borderline inedible (overcooked and tough). Wait staff was good and explained that they were short staffed and transitioning new help. End of the day though there was nothing done to rectify the situation and even if there was, I doubt we would be back, which is unfortunate because the place has a great location and atmosphere.
Nice place. Good service. They were out of 2 entrees that our party ordered on a Thursday afternoon. Will not likely return. Special dietary needs were overlooked. Could have caused health issues has we not caught the problem. Ruined my evening. Food is very good.
First impression was oh look its a cute colorful mexican reaturant that looks like its been maintained by some drunk guy with a single corn husk broom that he used to paint every surface a different color and sweep the floors once a week. Nice place if your a college kid and mom and dad are paying the bills, If you're into getting drunk, you're in the right place, but bring a friend if you're a girl because the partition/stall doors in the women's room don't close or lock. The bathrooms are both a disaster, and everything is filthy. We sat at a table by an entrance where the floor is at eye level when you're sitting down so when people come in the door, they can kick dirt onto your plate or table. Our table was waiting for us for a while they had it set up before we arrived with chips salsa and waters the ice was all melted, and the salsa was huge chunks of tomatoes there is chunky salsa and there is the 1-2 piece per chip they have... The dinners we ordered were: 3 quessedillas. 3 tacos 1 fountain drink 1 juratios 1 margarita The bill was $93 There were no rice beans or sides of any kind on the plates. The quessedilla had a big glob of sour cream.... Honestly, this is probably OK for college kids. And it's a good thing we came for a graduation and don't have to come back ever. Seeing as potsdam doesn't have many choices, they can be successful because they have no competition. But I don't recommend this place. The waiter did OK he was attentive and checked back on us a few times he got the orders right and our drinks weren't sitting empty.
Don’t bother trying to order food for takeout tonight (2/9/24) from the Cantina. They’re too busy to take your order. Apparently they made enough money today. 5:30 pm and their response to me. . . “We’re too busy, call back in an hour”. Really?!?! That is absolutely pathetic from a customer service standpoint. I’m seriously debating if I ever want to go back there to eat. You don’t want to bothered to take a takeout order that I don’t mind waiting for. . . What are you going to do if I’m actually there wanting to eat?
My family was taking me out for a special mother's day dinner, we even came from an hour and half away to go to this place, since I love Mexican food... Then we waited over an hour and only received our drinks. Waitress didn't even touch our table in that time. When asked how much longer she ignored us and walked by the table a couple more times. We paid for our drinks and left very unimpressed. Food smelled amazing, sadly didn't get to try it.
When I first moved to the North Country last summer, I was excited to learn that there was a Mexican restaurant in Potsdam. And then I read a review online saying they not only used lard in their beans, but that even the oil was not vegetarian. I call occasionally just to make sure this has not changed because I would be a regular customer if there were more than 1-2 vegetarian/vegan items on the menu, but I am always told the same thing and am disappointed. NO ONE does this anymore, especially in a college town. Clearly the owners of this restaurant do not care about accommodating dietary restrictions, or animal welfare. It is also expensive, and they don't have waitresses, which makes customer service less than satisfactory.
Visiting from Southwest Arizona. If go here any day of the week for the Margaritas. However the food was horrible. I ate half the plate (which wasn't easy) and the server asked me if I needed a "to-go-box". When I stopped laughing I politely said no thank you. Did I say great Margaritas?
The hostess acted like she was doing a big favor getting my take-out order, rude and disrespectful. It is not worth the hassle, and the prices are outrageous. The food quality has declined in recent years.
Fair food for an average price. Couldn't hear the waiter when they talked. As a person with a Vegetarian family, the food sucked. Who puts broccoli in tacos?? Was told the tacos were corn, they were flour. Huge turn off. First time going and definitely last time. I wish the food was better as the place is cute and charming, but completely not worth it.
This was actually the worst “mexican” food I’ve ever had. Their beans were severely undercooked and tasted like nothing; canned beans are better. The meat was worse, way over cooked and had no seasoning. The only half decent item we ordered was the guacamole which was still underwhelming considering we were eating it with store-bought chips. The pico they gave us was literally just poorly diced tomatoes with two pieces of onion and MAYBE a HINT of cilantro. My girlfriend and I took one bite of our food and then asked for the check. Our server didn’t even ask if anything was wrong. If I could give this place zero stars I would. Taco bell has better food than this. I can’t believe this place is open.
Not worth coming. Big portion taste terriable Bad service
Yeah this place is trash. From the moment I walked in I had a feeling it was trash. Weird server at the front, brought us our chips and salsa which was mediocre at best. We asked for a few extra moments to review the menu and didn’t get served for 30 minutes, not even a water refill. Ended up leaving before ordering. Don’t waste your time or your money, place is trash; run by an owner who doesn’t care and operates under the assumption he’ll always have customers. One day they’ll close and it’ll be good riddance
Our party of 6was asked if we would mind eating in the bar, which we did. There was a noticeable smell in there, which to me smelled like chlorine. There was a large sign that advertised a daily special for $5 margaritas. We each drank 2 during our dinner, thinking we were getting the specials, only to find out when we received our bill that the margaritas were only that special price if you ordered them at the bar yourself, so we we charged a full price of 9 or $10 each. Where we were seated, i could have reached out and touched the bar. I told the waitress and bartender that I felt the sign was misleading. They pointed out that next to the large writing for the special pricing, in teeny tiny letters it said "at bar only". It was almost impossible to see. My Baja salad had a greased soaked shell, tough steak and tasteless fillings. Not impressed Cactus Grill.
Food was not good at all. No flavor and everything covered with melted cheese. The flag dish was very dry. My kids nachos was the only decent item. My wife’s three amigos was again very dry and not edible. Would advise going elsewhere. Food over-priced. Don’t waste your time or money.
i wanna preface this by saying the server and manager who helped us was great. real friendly people, and they understood and helped us out. but please, for the love of god, do NOT come here because the prices are OUTRAGEOUS for the food they give us. there’s about four of us, and we get to our table after ten minutes of waiting and order our drinks and food. the soft drinks were fine but the margaritas were around 8-9 bucks a piece and both tasted like watered down liquor and were VERY small for the price. it was quite a bit of a wait (they didn’t tell us this beforehand, only after we had gotten our food, but there was a party of 40 so of course this backed up the kitchen) but eventually we got our food and we were all very disappointed. we had gotten two baja salads, one with shrimp and one with chicken, one steak burrito bowl, and one steak quesadilla. the shrimp in the salad was ICE COLD (to the touch) as if it was precooked and then dumped onto the salad, which seemed to be like store bought salad mix. the chicken in the other salad wasn’t as cold but it wasn’t hot and fresh either, and was VERY over-seasoned. the steak in both the quesadilla and the burrito bowl were very stiff and tasted funky, and also was pretty cold. both the burrito bowl and quesadilla came with HUUUUGE scoops of sour cream on the side (it looked like ice cream scoops 😭) and the guacamole they charged me extra for (NEARLY $5 EXTRA) in the burrito bowl was decent in flavor but was a VERY small amount. it felt like i was paying for the bowl instead of the actual guacamole we told the server who brought the manager, and he was happy to take off both salads and the burrito bowl (we paid for the quesadilla seeing as that one was the most edible and we can doctor that up at home) but the final check, after paying for two margaritas, three soft drinks, and one meal, WAS $52.39 DOLLARS. our whole party left with empty stomachs and we paid half a hundred bucks just for essentially one drink per person and a sorry quesadilla. if we hadn’t asked for them to take off the salads and the burrito bowl, the total would have been around $94, which is BAFFLING. i know that potsdam options are limited but please, go somewhere else and spend your hard earned money on food that’s actually worth it.
Very Disappointed!! I really don’t like to criticize places but this one!!! The place wasn’t that clean, the waiter wasn’t too welcoming the FOOD was terrible NO seasoning and NOT FRESH!! After 2-3 bites on my food I left the entire meal the waiter saw my plate he didn’t ask if something was wrong even tho I told him that the food was terrible at least he should’ve ask what was wrong with it!!!
Service was good. The tortillas in my taco weren’t cooked. Place was very dusty and had lots of cobwebs. Their salsa comes in 50 gallon drums so it just tastes off. I wouldn't recommend this places food over the local taco bell.
Strange. bordering on italian? why would a chicken quesadilla come with pesto? who knows! certainly not me, server was nice. extremely hot inside no air circulation tbh edit: got food poisoning would not recommend
This was my far the worst Mexican food I've ever had. The food was so dry and with zero flavor. The service was slow, but that wasn't the servers fault. The best thing about this place was the drinks. That's not saying much. I will not be back.
This place is disgustingly dirty. I will never eat there again. After leaving the area 5 yrs ago, it hasn't changed.
I only came here because my girl friend likes the food... I told the waitress that I didn't want any vegetables in or on my food. She recommend something to me and assured me it wouldn't have anything on it.. It was loaded with green peppers. I asked her about it and she said o they don't put that in there most of the time and walked away I will never come back. Not to mention my food had lettuce and tomato and some green pepper sauce all over it. Train your staff on what's in your food or do a better job at writing it on the menu if there to dumb to learn.
I came here with my girlfriend to celebrate our anniversary. We saw this place online and thought it would be a cute place to try out. To our suprise the food was quite interesting. The guac had no flavor, and my steak was basically raw. My girlfriend's rice tasted like ketchup and there was a suspicious black thing in her food. When addressed to the waitress all they could do was take 4 dollars off our bill (for an uneaten RAW meal). Our bill was 52 dollars. This restaurant was basically run by college kids and there was no good system. Workers seemed confused the whole time and this place appears to be an old factory. Essentially we ate gourmet dog food. The flys in this place were basically coming out of our food and it was a very upsetting experience. I hope we don't get sick. 1 star...
This is possibly the worst food I have ever had. Came here with my girlfriend and we were both disappointed from how salty the meat was. We took her food home to feed to the dog, atleast someone can get some enjoyment from it… Our waitress didn’t refill our water glasses a single time. This may have all been forgive able had it not been for the flys. I lost track of how many times they landed on our food and kept flying into my hair/eyes. This has to be some wild health code violation. All that doesn’t even address the heat, it was super hot. To sum it up: -over priced -wait staff are bad -very overpriced (3 tacos were $13) -looks/tastes like dog food - very hot Would give 0 stars if I could.
Both the food and service were terrible. After waiting for over 40 minutes to be seated, and observing the host seating other parties who had clearly arrived after me(who did not have a reservation), I only waited because I was feeling nostalgic. To my disappointment, I quickly learned that this is certainly not the same establishment that I enjoyed and dined at, frequently, as a Clarkson student. The guacamole tasted sour and the shrimp in the Rosarita were dehydrated and overcooked. What happened to the quality of food and service here? I was so excited to be back and the whole experience was a total let down. I have no desire to ever go back when I return to Potsdam. Sad! 😵💫
My wife and I went here last year and (despite the mosquitoes) enjoyed it well enough to come back while her parents were in town. They've gone downhill since then. The food was just OK and the portions were big enough to take some home but we will be throwing that away tomorrow. The staff at the front desk was rude and we waited ten minutes to be seated despite every table open on our arrival. Our waiter was not at all friendly and was trying to take our drink order before we even sat down. He offered a high chair for our baby and left me standing there holding the car seat until I had to ask someone else. He interrupted our conversation everytime he came to check on us during the meal. A few hours later we got sick. I had a massive stomach ache which turned into diarrhea before bed and my nursing wife threw up in the middle of the night. The atmosphere feels like you're eating in an abandoned factory. Accoustics are terrible and you can hardly hear people at your own table over the uproar of echoes and reverb even with less than half of the tables occupied. They need to put more effort into the building and hire professionals, not college kids if they want to charge the prices they do. I'd rather go to Taco Bell next time.
We were very, very disappointed in the food and atmosphere. Tables were so dirty our napkins stuck to them. The floors were dirty and inside smelled like old beer. The place needs to be cleaned from top to bottom. The chairs in the lobby were filthy. Salsa was old and mushy, food portions were small and cold. my enchilada was dry and tasteless. The restaurant appeared to be run by youngsters who didn't care about cleanliness, or unsatisfied consumers. We told the waitress about our dissatisfaction and she said she would tell the cook but did nothing to compensate. The margarita was very good. Sadly, I will not return.
The whole experience was a bummer. The smell of sewer when walking inside the building. Our table was very sticky so we asked the waitress to clean it. It was still feeling sticky after it was clean. We were hungry so ordered anyway. Our ice water smelled like chlorine. We ordered the slush margarita with corona beer in glass...it was good! The complimentary salsa and chips were stale. The salsa wasn't fresh. Taste like it was in refrigerator too long. To our surprise , the food came very fast but disappointing... because it was cold and everything lacked flavor. The chicken in my quesadilla was very dry. We did mention these things to our waitress, but nothing was done. The young people working there, lack restaurant experience. Doesn't seem to be supervision/management on-site. My concern and fear for all these issues that we experienced at this restaurant..is getting ill from lack of cleanliness and from contaminated food. I highly, WOULD NOT recommend this restaurant.
The staff is great and they make awesome cocktails, so you can go for that. I honestly feel bad for the staff though, because the food is not good and the bar is dirty. Nachos are a pile of chips with Colby-jack cheese. The chicken tacos were COLD. The fish tacos barely had fish. They had NO hot sauce, said they hadn’t for a few days. It’s a Mexican restaurant- get some at the store! they obviously don’t care- it’s the only Mexican restaurant in town so people will keep going there, but don’t expect good Mexican food if you go, especially if you’re a foodie. The owners own most of the restaurants in town so they seem to not really care, especially about this restaurant.
Food was bland and dry. There was not a drop of salt or any other seasoning on the chips. Smelt heavily of chlorine throughout the building. The lights in the dining area kept flickering. Service was slow but the staff was friendly. Typical experience for a restaurant ran by the Hazens.
What can I say? If the water hadn’t been refreshingly cold, I’d have nothing positive to report at all. Without a doubt, this was the worst “Mexican” food I’ve ever encountered—and the most disappointing meal I’ve had at any restaurant in the North Country, which is saying a lot. I opted for the steak fajitas, figuring it was the safest bet on the menu. Big mistake. The beef was as tough as boot leather, and neither it nor the scant half-cup of onions and peppers showed even a whisper of seasoning—not a pinch of salt, spice, or flavor to speak of. It was served with wilting, browning lettuce, a dollop of sour cream, and a pile of cheap shredded cheese. That’s it. No flair, no finesse. The experience was further ruined by about 20 flies buzzing around the table, eagerly claiming their share of the untouched portions. If not for them, I’d have had more leftovers for the dogs. And don’t get me started on the condiments: no hot salsa in sight, and the only “hot sauce” was a bottle of watery red vinegar labeled with the restaurant’s name—fittingly awful, like everything else. If you’re craving anything resembling authentic or even edible Mexican food in Potsdam… tough luck. It simply doesn’t exist here. Save your time and appetite; head elsewhere. *Edit* Burrito Bob's is pretty good.
Food was good but it was 10 degrees outside and probably 50 degrees inside. Unacceptable if you ask me. We had small children with us and everyone literally had to wear their coats the entire time. Even the poor staff had sweatshirts on. Sadly the margaritas were not enjoyable because of the inside temp- complete bummer!
Cold inside so dress warm. Food was good but is high on price for how much you get. I was is a large group and service was good for 1 table but other table not good. Every time I been there service is spotty at best.
Food was terrible. Ordered queso and it appeared they just melted some cheddar cheese and put it a bowl. It was sticky and thick, not queso. Salsa was cut up tomatoes, no onions, cilantro, jalapeños. Anyone could make better food. Finished our drinks and left. Didn’t want anything else from there. Don’t waste your time or money cause it’s disgustingly bad!!
