Opinions de The American Hotel Sag Harbor
The restaurant is amazing. The food and drinks are excellent and the service is outstanding. We were seated in the back patio and it was lovely.
Im have been in and my friends are in the restaurant business and are huge foodies and wine buffs. The food at the American Hotel is absolutely amazing. I went on a Tuesday and saw their $1 Oyster special and had 2doz myself. All apps & entrees were incredible and the desert was phenomenal as well. I'm sober but my friends order 2 bottles of fantastic wine also at a very very reasonable price. 5 star all around because the service was impeccable on all ends.
Impeccable service! Food was delicious! Our waiter, Dennis, was top notch! He was knowledgeable and very attentive. We had a great time and didn't feel rushed. Even though they were busy. Highly recommend this restaurant!
The staff, service and food were absolutely on point.... oysters Rockefeller, the bone marrow and the lamb chops were a favorite among all our guests... Truly an amazing experience all the way around.... highly recommend the restaurant at the American Hotel in Sag Harbor.
Quite simply, this is one of the finest restaurants in New York. I went on a Saturday night with my partner, and everything about the experience was outstanding. The service was fast and friendly, and the food is out of this world. We got the duck confit and the Pate de Foie de Canard to start, and both were really tasty, especially the duck. For mains she had the rabbit, and I had the filet mignon. Both were good, but I felt the filet really stood out. One of the best steaks I’ve ever had. The other star of the show here is the wine. Our server was very knowledgeable and directed us to an absolutely fantastic California Cabernet that went perfectly with our food. This place is not cheap, but it is worth every single penny for a special dinner with a loved one.
The landmark hotel in the heart of the iconic fishing village of Sag Harbor is a mainstay for exquisite dining experience to the white glove service from our waiters Joseph and Dennis to the delicious prepared meals and old world charm ambiance this is a must for a special occasion or for a date with that special someone in your life
Service was prompt, outdoor seating had very good heat lamps, food was tasty (a bit overpriced but to be expected) and interior is thoughtfully done. Enjoyed the experience, 5 stars, but not enough to return over trying other restaurants for now. Also, very cute restaurant washroom.
The American Hotel in Sag Harbor is nestled in the heart of this quaint beautiful village. Their restaurant is within the hotel which is gorgeous. We had lunch, a table of 6. Their menu is trendy and features fresh local proteins and produce which are simply delicious. The atmosphere is casual chic and the service exceeds expectations. A wonderful experience not to be missed. A stroll through the town has variety of wonderful shops which is sure to please everyone in your party. In a word. AMAZING!
They understand customer service. This is a special place from top to bottom. You're gonna pay, but we spent a week in the Hamptons and it's impossible to find professional friendly hospitality workers like this anymore. Get a drink and some oysters at the bar before your table is ready. Test me.
Food was absolutely delicious. My wife and I had to seafood dishes that were incredibly fresh and had amazing sauces. Ambience was nice. Service was a little slow but with Covid it’s acceptable. And nothing horrible anyway. Definitely a bit pricey but nothing too crazy.
My wife and I had our first wedding anniversary at the restaurant at the American Hotel 20 years ago and it was like a movie. Perfect service, beautiful room, delicious food. We recently went back to the Hamptons for our 20th and had brunch at a place that shall go nameless that I will never go back to, and it was almost $100. Later on we stopped at the bar at the American and the bar food we had there was less than half and again ridiculously delicious. The grilled cheese & bacon sandwich was amazing. My wife had the rabbit and couldn't stop complimenting the bartender and staff. While we were there, a group of veterans, in their seventies, some in uniform, had a reunion at the bar and then the restaurant. It was as a wonderful night. We will go back again, and won't wait 20 years.
Amazing food, great atmosphere highly recommend this restaurant, the only thing now with the COVID restrictions make a reservation for 7pm so you can enjoy your food and drinks with out feeling rushed the last 15minutes of dinner. Remember restaurants close at 10pm by law, but yes get there early and enjoy a few drinks have full dinner. Ask for the specials, I had the flounder, with lobster and shrimp bites, season vegetables topped with a lobster sauce and it was amazing!
Great ambiance. Food is incredible every time and drinks/wine list is phenomenal. Service is amazing
To OSMAN the concierge guy: You are a life saver!!! You helped me big time in getting a cab. Seems like a pretty simple thing but the thing is I am not even a guest. For him to extend his services to me speaks volumes of the kind of person he is. Even the wait staff was nice when I was in his way. He was never rude to me. To the hotel: you employ very good and genuinely nice people. Please acknowledge and appreciate them. I highly recommend this hotel. Thank you very much from the bottom of my heart.
The American Hotel is a staple of sag harbor. It always offers quality service, maintains great staff, and provides delicious food consistently. This is a timeless restaurant that we are lucky to have in the area
This is by far my favorite spot in Sag Harbor! If you want a little escape back to the early 1900s with old school vibes, delicious French food and classic drinks, this place is a MUST! The bartenders Vinnie, Paul, Harold, and Irvin are stupendous! Thanks Always for the great experience!
Always great food! And the atmosphere cannot be beat. We tried the lobster BLT this time. Excellent
Timeless elegance and top-tier cuisine in the heart of Sag Harbor. Exquisite dishes, fresh seafood, and perfectly cooked meats pair with an outstanding wine list—one of the best in the region. Attentive service and a warm ambiance make every visit unforgettable.
My visit is based off of a bar visit only! I have a book about touring the Hamptons and and there when I have time I go through the book and pick out some stuff to check out that the book recommends. The American Hotel bar was one of the places to visit. I walked in and the atmosphere was quiet when I went in and spotted the bar pretty easily. I sat down and had one on one service from the bartender since I was the only one there. I don't drink alcohol anymore but recently I have been having non alcoholic beers here and there and the bartender had one in stock so he poured me a non alcoholic beer. It cost me $15 including leaving a decent size tip for a drink since I normally tip $1 a drink when I go out. It's a more swankier place so I expected a higher price. The bar seems to have a good selection for alcohol drinking people and if there were more people there it might have been a more fun atmosphere, for me it was more of a relaxing, take a few minutes to get myself together atmosphere which I appreciated. Maybe one day if I've got more money I'll spend the night as a guest in this hotel.
Simply marvelous. The guest rooms, fine dining, and gracious staff all made our visit something worth remembering for years to come. Everything was just perfect. Cannot wait for our next visit. With appreciation.
Had the most wonderful birthday dinner last night! From the concierge to Dennis, BESt server ever, it was amazing! Great food and best apple dessert with scrumptious caramel..thanks to all ❤️
Maleeha was such a great help. She was institutional in finding me a room with accommodating interests. BOOK HERE NOW.
I have been coming here for over 25 years! This place never disappoints and always has excellent food and excellent service. The building itself is very charming with a bit of a spooky feel inside, which adds to the experience. Fun crowd, great people watching. Great for families and if you’re just coming out to grab a drink at the bar. It’s a staple in sag!
Maleeha and Eugene were exceptional!! Awesome customer service! I look forward to seeing them again!
Have been going for years. Love the hipster repellent decor, wine list, great food and amazing service. I’ve only had two bad experiences there. The first was a cougar attack on my dessert. After two hours of flirting with everyone eligible at the bar, the predators took spoons to my ice cream without asking. When confronted, they attempted to use a coordinated smile and back touch maneuver...which was lacking and dated. The bartender (I was eating at the bar) might have done more to protect me as I was an obvious bystander (sub 50 / lacking 3 commas). The second episode involved a friend’s 4 month old baby. A member of the board of directors (not of the hotel) lifted her out of her stroller (without obtaining prior approval) and began to engage the toddler. When confronted and forced to return the child he grew agitated. All in all, an amazing place to dine at and an amazing place to be. Should be 12/10.
Charnice was the epitome of customer service I often stay here I come maybe every two or three weeks every time the smile is the same. The level of Service is the same she’s warming. She’s funny not only that she is beautiful. That smile is very captivating. She’s one of the reason why I keep coming back to this place I do recommend cannot wait for the new Renovation as well.
Fresh, delicious seafood and classic American dishes. The staff are some of the most polite, accommodating, and helpful I’ve ever met. We had a large party—including three young children—but the staff helped fit us in and attended assiduously to our table. I will certainly be returning.
Myself and a woman I'm dating had a 7pm reservation. We were greeted very warmly upon our arrival and it only got better from that point. Seated in the bar area at a 2 top table which I thought was perfect it was alive with all types laughs and conversations which made for a great atmosphere! Food wine service dessert as always was perfect took our time after 3 hours I know thats a long one but my date was so engaging gorgeous and a little tipsy it felt like 1 hour. No pressure to leave or flip our table if your in Sag Harbor don't miss this place it's fantastic!!
Ate dinner with my wife for our anniversary, the staff made us feel special. Mikhail was our server, 5 stars for him too! The food was excellent. Loved the Lobster Risotto and the Bananas Foster.
Beautiful old style restaurant, very good service, nice staff and good food. All meals came at the same time and it seemed the waiters had some good training. Always would go back.
Stopped in for a drink on a sunday nigh. Bar was packed, so we were offered the couch in the front of the establishment. Absolutely great. The staff was friendly. The Manhattan was perfect. Watching staff interact with local patrons as they came and went was all the entertainment we needed. Historic, iconic, and quaint. A Sag Harbor must !
I did not come to stay. I came strictly for the restaurant located downstairs. MY GOD IN HEAVEN...BEST ABSOLUTE BEST SEAFOOD I HAVE HAD IN MY LIFE (and I eat alot of seafood). The fish was fresh, vegetables fresh, sauce spectacular! I have NOTHING bad to say about this place except that it's too far for me to come here more often but I will definitely be back. MY COMPLIMENTS TO THE CHEF
Lovely old world, old money atmosphere, wonderful food and fair prices for the quality. Only somewhat slow service caused a markdown from five stars. When my glass of wine finally arrived it did come with an apology and a generous pour. It was Saturday lunchtime and they were busy, but we'd finished our appetiser before the wine came so not really up to the standard one would expect. Top marks for everything else.
Awesome room. Classic decor. Restaurant wasn't all I expected but it was convenient and for the most part delicious. There was a random power outage for maybe a half hour but didn't affect service. Remember no TV in the room but it was actually nice. Beds were a little stiff but nothing severe. No safes in room and doors aren't exactly state of the art for security so don't bring anything you plan to leave behind.
Nice, charming. Great for intimacy. Loved the side room. The restaurant really needs to have more vegan and gluten free choices! Wade the wonderful waiter looks like a down to earth Anderson Cooper. He was excellent, and I think our group accidentally under tipped him, so make sure to show him some love when you go and enjoy his excellent service!!!
Breakfast on Monday looked worst than it would in average diner. Potatoes old and dried up, smoked salmon Benedict, has salmon smoked salmon steamed and it looked well cooked. Waitress who as also a hostess forgot the orange juice. Asian waiter than asked for pitcher of hot water, had a rude reply. Usually service Is much better, I guess it's no a breakfast place.
I had the pleasure of eating at the restaurant this weekend. The place was packed, lively crowd, piano playing in the background. Service was very good, drinks were exceptional, the menu is classic American and my food was cooked perfectly and was very tasty.
The food mediocre -the rabbit overcooked again. The bison should’ve been medium rare - came out fully well done at $76. No apologies. The bread is stale tonight. We’ve been coming here for about 30-35 . I don’t know what’s going on now. Management needs to be replaced for the Chef does
American Hotel was highly rated so we thought we would give it a try. Ambience was excellent. Decor was for Christmas. Staff were friendly. Prices were fairly competitive. We got three appetizers to start, cod souffle, French onion and blood orange salad. All three were underwhelming. We were expecting something phenomenal from the reviews. We did not get an entree. Street parking was fairly accessible.
Living just blocks away from The American Hotel, we have enjoyed many a pleasant meal in the restaurant or family brunch on the porch (and countless great cocktails in the bar!). But on a recent date night for Valentine’s Day, I have to say the food was rather mediocre, especially for the price (landing well over $300 for two). Most notably, the special “order-ahead” chocolate soufflé was a collapsed lump of chocolate. It’s hard to complain about “just ok”, but at those prices, and at a restaurant that claims to be one of the best in the area, it’s unlikely we will return for much more than cocktails. To end on a nice note, one of our two appetizers was delicious.
Extremely unprofessional service. We had a dinner reservation, but went early to have a drink at the bar. The older gentleman behind the bar was extremely cold, immediately made us feel unwelcome. Common attitude of thinking because you have done a job for a long time, you must be good at it. Cocktail was unbalanced, but the bitterness from bartender is what caused us to cancel our dinner reservation and go elsewhere. Disappointing because I know we could have had a much better experience. The atmosphere is gorgeous and very unique and we have friends that rave about the food.
Food was excellent. Maitre d ruined our experience. Pompous and rude. There are many other fine dining experiences we look forward to experiencing.
I won’t give 1 star as we didn’t get a chance to dine in the half empty restaurant. But the experience trying to get a table was disappointing. We were in Southampton and a friend recommended American Hotel for happy hour and dinner. So off we went as the house we are staying at this summer is around the corner. We went to the bar and were informed that the bar is for dining, not drinking.. who knew.. then we asked for a table and we’re then informed that they were completely committed for the entire weekend. Luckily LuLu’s across the street was able to accommodate us with drinks and then an amazing dinner. As Nancy Reagan once said.. Just say no..
American Hotel has decent food but for the price they charge the restaurant is in MAJOR need of a face lift and a proper cleaning. I get your supposed to appreciate its old world charm but when we were 1st sat in the dinning room on the left it smelled so bad like moth balls we asked to be relocated. The hostess was not happy that we were moving but it was that or we were leaving. After a few minutes we were moved to long dining room with the glass ceiling which was much better but still also had a funky musty smell.
A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I stayed overnight at the American Hotel and had dinner. The room was fine, but we were disappointed by the restaurant. It is a historic place with occasional celebrities and Hampton's prices but the food and service did not live up to our expectations. The duck breast portion was minuscule, the smoked trout appetizer was not appetizing and our waiter was stretched thin. The oysters were very good.
Came for the wine list - which was impressive indeed. Was hoping to see the cellar but that didn’t happen. Food was the opposite of the wine list. You would think that if you’re dropping big money on a bottle of Romanée Conti you would like to eat something equally remarkable. Furthermore, while we were picking away at our orderings some of the staff were heaping leftovers into a big, sloppy pile of food a few feet away from us. It literally made it impossible for us to keep eating and we left. The picture is the second pile, the one before it was at least three times the size. The table next to us also commented on the event. 100% not the experience we were expecting. If you look at reviews not done by “local guides” you’ll read more honest commentary.
Incredible experience. Called to book a 2 night stay- business meeting in Sag Harbor. I was told that they couldn’t accommodate me. I thanked them, then began to look into booking with Sag Harbor Inn or Barron’s Cove. Before I had a chance to book Sag Harbor Inn ( which had availability) , I received a call back from American Hotel, telling me that they could accommodate me for 2 nights. I then booked it. When I arrived at hotel on Sunday afternoon, I was told that I would need to move to another room for the 2nd night- I was a bit taken aback, but I went along with it to be helpful to them. The following morning around 11:00AM , I went to the front desk as I was leaving for a meeting, asking to move my things into the other room ( an “ apartment”- the next level up). I was told that the room was not available and wouldn’t be for awhile. I asked for a key as I told the clerk that I would be back very late. They wouldn’t give me a key for the apartment room. They told me there would not be any problem later in the evening. Well here is the unbelievable part- I returned to the hotel around 10:45PM- the hotel was completely closed-locked up. I am with my bags and there is no one there! I had nowhere to stay that night. If gets better- I called the hotel the following morning explaining what happened. I asked to speak to the manager- I was told that he would call me as soon as he came into work. I called back at 3:00PM and was told that he had left for the day. Can you believe this!He never called me back. The clerk I spoke with at 3:00PM insisted that there was a bartender there at 11:00PM the night before and could have let me in.Well , I’d like to know where he or she was , as the place was locked up and dark- no one responded to my persistent knocking. I have stayed at the American Hotel on a few other occasions - this was a shocking and incredibly disappointing experience. I will never stay there again- this experience was horrible. I would encourage you to stay away - there are other much nicer places to stay in Sag Harbor
GM selectively turned us away due to dress code (T shirt disallowed) while others wearing Tshirts (older than us) were being served at the bar.
This review pertains to the dining experience at The American Hotel Restaurant, as I did not stay at the hotel. I brought a group of six for lunch, and unfortunately, the experience was a major letdown. The food took over an hour to arrive, and when it did, the half chickens, priced at $49 each, were dry and overcooked. The wild rice tasted like a generic brand, and the meal was accompanied by only three short asparagus spears and half a carrot. To make matters worse, a margarita in a rocks glass cost $23. With a total bill of $600, the lack of care and creativity in the meal was striking. Despite being in the Hamptons, the experience felt like a tourist trap with no real value.
Very bad experience. If you're in your thirties and looking for a nice, but fun place to go to dinner in the Hamptons, do not go here. So many other better options. After arriving, I was told my shirt (a nice tee shirt) was inappropriate for the restaurant. I humbly accepted that and sat down. Next, waiter walks up and makes a joke asking if we want expresso martinis, as if we are kids just looking to get buzzed. That followed by very poor service and just okay food. In summary, going to a nice restaurant, spending a bunch of money on cocktails and multiple courses, against being made to feel like fools, felt like a bad trade. Go somewhere else.
This is - without a doubt - one of the worst restaurant experiences I’ve ever had. We had a 7pm reservation and didn’t get our food until after 9pm. For the record my food was RAW OYSTERS and that somehow took them over two hours to make. The waiter didn’t check on us once and actively avoided eye contact and we had to chase him down many times. Before the meal even began he was rude and snapped at me when I asked if he could bring us menus because we sat at a table for 15 min without even getting menus to look at. Every single thing was a disaster from start to finish. We got up to talk to mangers many times and still nothing changed and not one single person ever came over to apologize. The biggest offense was when we got our bill and saw that we were expected to pay for every single thing we ordered despite how insanely awful the experience was. I went up to the manager to discuss this with him and he was rude and fought me plenty. Finally they gave us a measly 20% off our bill. Let the record show this place charges over $40 per entree. It was beyond beyond appalling, clearly the problematic service goes all the way up to the top - I have rarely seen a restaurant so poorly managed and you quite literally couldn’t pay me to return.
It is with great disappointment that I must convey my dissatisfaction regarding our recent visits to this establishment. My wife and I, having graced this venue on multiple occasions with the hope of consistency, have resolved never to return. The ambiance, regrettably, lacks the refinement one would anticipate from an establishment of purported standing. The culinary offerings were underwhelming, a stark contrast to what one expects when patronizing such a place. Moreover, the conduct of the staff was, to put it mildly, unbecoming. A particular waiter—whose name, if memory serves, is Osmian—displayed a demeanor towards fellow patrons that was nothing short of appalling. It is most disconcerting that the management appears disengaged from these glaring deficiencies. Observing waitstaff indulging in meals within view of the guests, while others awaited service, speaks volumes of the absence of professionalism. One would expect a more cultivated approach to customer service, especially when considerable sums have been expended. In summation, the experience fell woefully short of the standards we uphold, making it impossible for us to revisit.
Tourist trap? Came in as a group of 5 for dinner, spent a trillion dollars and literally no one remarked on the food. I ordered the crab cake. If the food we were served was actually sourced from pre-made food from Costco I wouldn’t have been able to tell. And the atmosphere including clientele is giving pure Miss Havisham vibes.
Looks and smells like something out of a horror movie . I think the place was hot but maybe 40 years ago .you won’t believe but the place has a dress code 😂😂😂😂the guy who enforced the dress code at the door of the restaurant makes faces like a drunken sailor. Do your self a favor STAY AWAY FROM THEM
