The Shipwreck (SALT) offers a beautiful waterfront dining experience with fresh seafood and friendly service. Standout dishes include the lobster roll, shrimp with polenta, and carrot cake. Some reviewers mention slow service at the bar and occasional inconsistency in food quality.

Fantastic! Everything is delicious. Atmosphere is heavenly. Staff and chef are top notch. Absolute must visit!
Great waterfront restaurant in a beautiful location. Good food, wonderful service and a great location. Would definitely recommend
Go-to restaurant. I frequently come here. Very chill and nice. Love their mussels. You can just pull up in a dinghy. Good vibes Saw scott disick here once lmao
Beautiful setting, right on the waterfront overlooking a pretty marina. Food was outstanding and portions were larger than we expected, so nice value.
The staff was ultra accommodating to special needs. They were all very friendly, and very polite. Also, they were prompt to take our order, and deliver drinks. The meals came a few minutes later. Food was really good. Everything was cooked and plated to perfection.
We stopped for dinner on our way to the ferry and were seated immediately overlooking the marina. Our waitstaff were very courteous and helpful. 5hey have an IPA on tapfrom a local brewery and also ordered a jalapeno margarita. Both drinks and the foor were perfect. We walked around the marina and were not rushed in any way. There is a dog water dish outside and customers were friendky. Just what we needed after walking the nearby preserve.
We had a dinner for thirty in the tasting room and loved every moment. Drinks were served outside on the deck over the water and then delicious appetizers graced each table set with hydrangea blossoms. Our dinner choices were on the table and all the food was served simultaneously. Every dish was fresh and light. We lingered over tasting platters of dessert. It's a perfect place for a party or dinner for two! a Shelter Island find!
Salt is very accommodating and laid back, which is exactly what you are looking for when you have kids. The food is good, and the views are nice. They even have an outside bar carved out of a boat that they call Shipwreck. Shipwreck typically has live music on the weekends, and there are lawn games to play close-by. The bartenders are chill, the drinks are good, and food can be ordered from the bar and brought to your table in as take-out from the main restaurant.
Beautiful view, excellent food. The calamari and mussels were to die for, the fresh fluke was perfect and the carrot cake served all four of us and might one day make it into the urban dictionary as "Legal Crack Cocaine"!
Had the lobster roll, very good. Had the calamari appetizer. Right on the water, beautiful scenery. Would definitely go back.
Come by boat or land to this Great restaurant for lunch or dinner amazing spot on the marina fresh seafood Also, the shipwreck bar is a beautiful outdoor bar which opens at 4 pm on the weekends they feature live music employee night on Mondays
Always have had great food and service. Super location. Call well in advance if you want to make reservations as they book-up quickly for weekends and Holidays.
Thank you Chef Bobby!!! It was a pleasure to meet you today. From the information you provided in the parking lot, to the ice bag you provided my wife after her bicycle injury from our trip around the island, to your introductory crab cakes and right down to the exquisite meal you prepared. As Arnold once said: "We'll be back!". Dave and Cathy S
Super casual and fun atmosphere by the water. There is an outdoor bar with more casual food/drinks and also a separate restaurant with seating. Both are great with awesome service! The linguine with clam sauce was delicious in the main restaurant area! I was with a vegetarian friend who they were happy to accommodate.
Stopped in spur of the moment and glad we did. Staff was friendly & attentive, and the location offers wonderful views. We started off with a Whale Killer and Jalepiño Margarita which were great. I'm a big fan of spicy margaritas and this was one of the best I've had. We then had the steamed edamame and clam chowder which both were enjoyable. The main course was a lobster roll and tataki tuna, both were fresh and tasty. There finishing touch was a warm chocolate volcano cake. We will definitely be returning.
Delicious food served by the water by super friendly international crew made the meal experience fantastic!
Stopped in for lunch- great service - low key vibe but very classy. The menu was great - but the same as PORT in Greenport. I will say I liked to atmosphere more. The polenta was strangely a side that was delicious. Would recommend!
Always a pleasure! Easy to imagine you're in the Caribbean, sitting outside along the dock, with a view of the boats and the bay beyond.
Such a great spot! The food is super tasty. I loved the chicken wings and my friend was very impressed with the oysters. The waitress was very sweet and attentive! And of course the view from the dock is so peaceful. This place is a must if you are visiting Shelters Island
what a great place to relax, drink and chat with friends, old and new alike! always great music at shipwreck bar on a weekend afternoon.great location and you can arrive by boat or car.the food is very nice made with fresh and healthy ingredients.yum.
A sister restaurant of Port in greenport. The food and service were great. We went for lunch, with a child. They are kid friendly he loved seeing the boats in the marina. They have a little shop and a nice bar. People were great and it was lively. I highly recommend. Thank you for a great day out.
What a wonderful experience! We’ve been coming here for years! Always great! But this year was super special! They have many areas to eat... and one was especially set up for people who would rather social distance in this lovely spot! They were very careful and caring and did this dine-out area perfectly!! And the lobster roll and clam chowder were the best! Thank you for it all!!
Visited weekend after Labor Day when most places started winding down - but not here! Great atmosphere right by a marina, amazing drinks (in big sizes too) plus kitchen from their next door restaurant with very good apps - dumplings, edemame, etc. Haven't tried entrees, but looked delicious. Great place to enjoy sunset withive music on weekends. Go Team Salt - big thumbs up!
09/01/2023. We have been back numerous times since this first review. Food is always delicious. Our servers also are always terrific. Today was an exception. Johan was our server. Brought out appetizers and our soups at the same time. REALLY??. 20 minutes later the main course. ( dinner). Through the entire meal, not once did he check on us to see how anything was. After clearing the table we thought maybe desert. He just brought the check. Watch out for him. Incredible lobster roll, delish fish tacos. 95 degrees 100% humidity. White wine and beer was ice cold. Had reservations and seated 10 minutes early. Waitress was a doll and extreamy attentive.
Love SALT! Best chill spot on the island for lunch and dinner. Food is great and staff is so friendly. Ali is the best! Their separate bar on the hill is such a scenic spot especially with the live music. Main restaurant has covered outdoor space to you don't get burnt! Beautiful water and boat views!
Katelyn was an AMAZING server! Very accommodating when our large party wanted to split the check, everything tasted delicious, and the atmosphere was perfect for a summer sunset meal with a big group of friends, highly recommend checking this spot out, make sure to ask for Katelyn!
Love everything about this place in a beautiful waterfront setting on shelter island. particularly great are the sushi specials, crispy rice, shishito peppers and the mussels.
Kaitlin is the best! Ask for her if you come here… she makes it fun and your glass is never empty! View is awesome and the food is great!
Katelyn was amazing!!!! She was one of the most accommodating and sweetest waitresses I’ve had in a while. Chill and efficient. Wish all servers were as great as her
The view was beautiful, looking out on the water at all of the different boats. They had indoor and outdoor seating. We chose outside. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable. The hostess was very nice. The food was out of this world and the prices were great. We left with smiles on our faces, and our bellys full. Will definitely be going back again!
One of the best hamburgers I've ever had, everything is delicious. I recommend making a reservation ahead of time, but if not they have a great outdoor bar area to wait for table have a drink and just chill..if you are in GreenPort or Sag Harbor it's well worth the 10min ferry ride over..5pm they have live music outside. The safe is wonderful...put this place on your list
Salt was great for a Sunday lunch. The GF and I, took the ferry over in the morning. Drove around and checked out the island. We ate lunch at Salt. I recommend you make reservations as it fills up fast. I had the Lobster Roll and she had a sushi roll. We sat outside, right next to the boats docked. The atmosphere was great on a beautiful Sunday. Service was great and the food was delicious. We plan to return.
I have been going SALT for ten years and it is the most idyllic waterfront spot on the island. The food is delish. Especially Chef Matt’s sushi and the vongole. We love the service especially Delila. She’s been working at SALT for years and always is cheerful and helpful.
What a gem this place is - the setting, the staff, the atmosphere is just stunning - and the menu! Delicious Lobster Roll, tuna crispy rice and the toro bomb were all fresh and so good! Make a point to spend some time at Salt - wonderful relaxing day and attentive staff
SALT is one of my favorite spots on Shelter Island. The setting is beautiful, right on the marina, and it has such a relaxing vibe. I’ve been a few times now and the food is always fresh and delicious. The lobster roll is a standout and the fish tacos are also really good. The staff is friendly and the service is quick, even when it gets busy. It’s a great place to sit outside, enjoy the view, and have a nice meal with friends or family. Every time I go, I leave happy. Highly recommend if you’re visiting the island.
Great food, great views, great staff. Lovely location by the water with a varied menu served by very friendly staff. We enjoyed the tasty mango mahi tacos. The pasta dish was good also. Wine was good value.
Great view from the patio. Food was reasonably priced, we split a seared tuna sandwich special. Delicious! Also check out the cocktails, the jalapeño margarita is very refreshing. Staff was attentive and professional.
Good view and nice outdoor atmosphere. Food was good, but portion was on the small side. We had literally rushed our meal bc of bees, but hoping this is not typical.
Fantastic! The poke bowl is amazing. As is all the ahi dishes we tried. And my 6yo discovered the calamari, declaring it the best ever. Friendly service all around.
Our waitperson was attentive and knowledgeable and our food was spaced appropriately. The Thai mussels and spicy calamari were very good. So was the roasted Brussels sprouts. The clam chowder, however, was somewhat bland and had some gelatinous lumps in it. The grilled asparagus was fine but could have used more flavor. Overall this is a very good place to dine, and you can't beat the ambience of the marina!
Restaurant was so cute & our server was so sweet and super accommodating! The mahi tuna tacos were 10/10, the blackened tuna sandwich was okay, and the drinks were great. Pricing wasn't too bad either! Would definitely recommend.
The atmosphere there is very relaxing and I love the pool. We just spent the whole day there Sunday and I literally had to drank my niece out of the water because we had to get on the road. The marina owners are nice too. Sometimes you can see a celebrity there but don’t bother them 😉
The calamari was really amazing, as we're the crab cakes. The fish tacos were decent but not great. The setting was beautiful and the service was friendly but a bit disorganized. It's quite expensive, but what do you expect in this area adjacent to the Hamptons?
Noting first that satisfaction doesn’t correlate to the best but you will for sure be satisfied with their lobster rolls. Perfect for a boat day in Peconic or a quick ride if you’re local to Shelter Island.
The fact I couldn’t get pictures of the two entree’s should be very telling. Every dish we ordered was fantastic, made with such talent and love. Please do yourself the favor of trying the seared Tuna sandwich!!!! Fantastic. And the Carrot cake is good enough to save the world. A great variety of drinks as well. Blue crab roll is distinctly East end, a diverse taste that feels at home on the docks of SALT. I wish the Artichoke had some more garlic/ginger or just another primary flavor to enhance the artichoke texture and taste. Looking forward to seeing this place in full summer bloom. Come check it out!!
We had the sweetest waitress! She was not only super bubbly but she was on top of everything. Nice clam chowder. While it was fresh, we thought the poke bowl was a bit dull considering how many options there are when you go to a poke restaurant Throwing on some toasted sesame seeds, scallions, edamame, nori flakes, sliced cucumbers shredded carrots, shredded red cabbage, crispy onions from a jar, etc. could go a long way in making this dish more tasty, delightful and colorful without increasing the food cost very much. BF enjoyed his lobster roll which was expensive but had a lot of lobster on it. Probably enough for two lobster rolls in the city.
Great dockside restaurant offering inside and outside dining. The menu includes fresh seafood and salads as well as interesting appetizers, soups, entrees and deserts. Well stocked bar able to create many exotic cocktails. Whether you're looking for lunch or dinner you must try Salt. Most times reservations are recommended.
We made reservations through Open Table and were seated promptly upon arrival. The wait staff was friendly and always had a smile on their faces. Salt is a nice laid back and cozy eatery with nice views. The menu had a nice mix of food to choose from and was amazingly well prepared. We had a wonderful time and will definitely be coming back.
Sad to say that Salt has changes every year I visit. This time it wasn't busy, service was fast and fair. Menu was limited more to snack or app.choices. Margaritas was great.
The food is very average, typical bar style food. The sushi was surprisingly good. Come for the drinks and the vibe. Also the bar boat in the back is the true highlight. Its super cute and fun!
Nice location on West Neck section of Shelter Island. Service and food were good. As for wine: my huge pet peeve is when you pay $14.00 for a glass of wine and it's not even filled 1/2 way. Come on!! Next time, if there is one, I'll stick with water and have my wine at home!
Can't beat the view and the friendly service! Now for the food.... Friends like the chowder, wished they had a version w/o bacon! Mussels in green curry.... not much flavor and the bread? What was that stale crostini type bread? Served about small 10 mussels, for $23?? Mahi Mahi tacos... we had to ask for salsa or something to give it some flavor, very bland and the most expensive three little tacos ($26) I've ever seen. Clearly you are paying for the view and the scene!
Never got to try as they were too busy. Not even take out. So don't know.
We came here as a party of 5 for dinner. The food was just ok all around. Not bad but nothing stand out. The staff was a little abrasive. The space itself is nice. I've heard good things so we'll have to give them another chance in the future.
Nothing great about the food here. Small portions and the fish is not the best. They are trying hard under difficult circumstances and the setting is pretty but no real excuse for the skimpy portions and second rate fish.
The restaurant was very busy, but my friend and I could stay at the bar. The service was good, Korean BBQ appetizer was okay, calamari was crisp and tender.
Very nice location. However I ordered a cocktail and it didnt quite seem worth it. The bartender didn't seem interested. I would say overall pretty average experience.
Great location and beautiful views are the highlight here. The drinks at the bar were tasty and well made and the service was solid. The let down was the food not particularly good quality especially at the price point. Next time I would save money and just get food at the food truck at the shipwreck bar and listen to the live music.
Food was delicious in general although too many sandwich tyoe dishes. . However they could not provide coffee at the end of dinner at 9 pm. Dessert was also very limited.
Water view dockside restaurant with overpriced drinks and even more overpriced food. Don’t waste your time and money, there are so many other beautiful delicious local places on shelter island and North Fork.
Nice location and nice staff, but unfortunately food wasn't very good. Nice bar and live music was starting soon, so that's worth a trip if that floats your boat....
Service was lacking, the veggie sushi roll was served ten minutes after the other dishes, and the fresh lobster was dry and served with only one claw! When the manager stopped by our table to ask how our meal was, she seemed genuinely confused when we shared about the lacking claw and told us she would check on it and get back to us. She never returned.
My previous lunches at Salt have been satisfying, however my most recent lunch experience I was very disappointed. The server was rushed and not did not listen to instructions on how I would like my tuna cooked. The order arrived raw, not rare as ordered. Manager heard my complaint and replaced my lunch order. Order was served raw the second time around. This time she was not helpful or the least bit concerned about getting it right, with abit of a huff she marched to the kitchen with my plate. Third time now with tuna cooked ( the same tuna). New french fries. Tuna was served sliced, so one could tell how it was cooked. I was sooo disappointed and unhappy at this point. I had a few bites, of this unpleasant meal. When restaurants cannot carry out a simple request on a order, and staff manager has the attitude they are doing you a favor, why bother. This happened on a off season day.
We have dined at salt before on several occasions and were completely satisfied. However, this day we were very unhappy with the lunch served. The response from management was appropriate but nevertheless cast a shadow on what should have been a wonderful day. I'm not sure if I'll ever return.
My husband and I went a few years ago and couldnt wait to go back..we went last night and wont be back for food. The dinner was nothing special...and on the expensive side..service was....hmmmm Lovely spot for watching the boats.
My wife and I took a day trip to Shelter Island and decided to check this place out based on reviews and location. Unfortunately our visit was less than stellar. We got to the restaurant mid-afternoon and it was pretty empty, so we got seated almost immediately. However, it took close to a half hour before someone finally came to our table. Maybe they were in between shifts? The server who finally came was very nice. My wife tried to order a non-alcoholic drink but they only had one option on the menu and couldn't make anything else she asked for. So she asked for a club soda with mint leaves in it, but she got rosemary twig instead. Food wasn't great, clam chowder was terrible. Bao buns were pretty tasty but nothing special. After we were done eating we decided to check out the outdoor bar they have and went to go a drink at the indoor bar first to take with us. We stood there for close to 20 minutes and the only bartender they had never looked at us once. So we left and decided to get a drink at the bar outside instead. They were admittadly packed but again, standing at the bar, not a single bartender acknowledged we were standing there for close to 15 mintues. We finally called someone over so I could get a beer. All in all, location was very nice, but service and food were very mediocre at best. Their sister restaurant in Greeport, Port, is much better. We will not be going back if we make our way back on to Shelter Island.
Expensive mid food. I had the worst fish tacos of my life. I could not imagine making worse ones if I were in a TV show contest. Everyone else’s food was similar, just blah. Great service and location. Fire the chef, start over. And I have been going here for years. Never again
I came here on a Sunday afternoon during Labor Day weekend on a day trip to Shelter Island from East Hampton with two others. We made the reservation for a lunch table two days prior on Yelp. Just to start off with, who uses Yelp for reservations any more? This is so dated and honestly emblematic of the experience we had. The setting of the restaurant is fine. Along a Mariana that has covered outdoor seating and plenty of parking. The food is terribly expensive and not good. I got the lobster roll thinking that no one could mess up a lobster roll but I was wrong. The lobster was over cooked and lacking flavor. The snow crab roll was inedible. The people who worked at the restaurant were friendly but a bit odd and like they didn’t really know how to work in a restaurant or communicate effectively. I realize there are not a lot of options on Shelter Island in the summer for meals but I would not go back here and I would not recommend.
Arrived off-hours (3pm on a Wednesday) and waited 20 minutes for a server before leaving. Other tables were asking bussing staff to find their waiters. Very poor service, but I can not speak to the food quality.
I wish I could give no stars. We had asked for a table which was a wait of 30 minutes. The hostess let us know that she will text once the table is ready. The hostess never called us, after an hour wait we had to leave since we never got the call or text.
I waited 10 minutes to get a table and was ignored by 5 servers.
My girl and I sat at a table for about 30 mins and no one served us. Meanwhile the table next to us who arrived the same time as us were able to order drinks and food. At least 3 different servers came by and no even stopped to ask if we were being served.
Long wait for table. Waitress was rushed off her feet and so we felt a little ignored. Food was good but pricey. I felt like I was only there to provide tips for the staff.
Awful experience. I walked in with my girlfriend on her birthday to a half empty restaurant and they had the gall to say, "Their kitchen is too backed up to take a walk-in." Are you kidding me? They can't serve us in a half empty place? Why because we are not from Shelter Island? I hope the board of Health closes this place down!!!! Not happy!
Have summered on Shelter Island for 30 years, many friends and family on the island. Have eaten at SALT several times and go to Shipwreck regularly. Walked in with my family of 5, with 3 young daughters, for a meal, no reservation early on a Thursday night in late August (530pm). It was not busy. We were seated, while my four year old daughter was taken to the restroom. Out of respect, I waited in the bar area for three minutes so we could all be seated together. I told the junior hostess this, and she agreed. During these three minutes, our table was given away by the rude lead hostess, who felt that customers with reservations, who did not show up on time, should be given the table we were already seated at, where our menus were already placed, and where we were told to sit. She knew our child was in the bathroom and that I was waiting for them, and did not care. It was embarrassing to witness the callousness in restaurant staff. The hostess had previously pointed directly at another diner as she walked in, to be maneuvered to her own table. Clearly pointing at people and maneuvering them around seems to be part of the SALT etiquette class. Spoke to the manager, he said she made a mistake. He offered a worse table, which I did not accept out of principle: you do not move people who are already seated for dinner, and your customer is the most important part of a restaurant. I worked in service for 10+ years and I have never seen anything like this, especially at a place that bills itself as a high end restaurant. Food is two stars because it looked good. Location is great on the water.
Horrible experience never returning. The wait was an hour and a half which was fine assuming we were waiting for an exceptional experience. The hostess sent us to the “immaculate” neighboring bar “Shipwreck” to get drinks and wait. It was the bottom of a sailboat surrounded by Costco patio furniture and yellow jackets. They were “unable” to make half the drinks we requested and instructed us to walk back to the restaurant to get them — same for tap water. As much as I want to pay $3 for a bottle of water I’d rather dehydrate. Wings were really good though. We finally got to our table on the dock next to a rambunctious group of about 18 people. Fine. The waitress has a terrible attitude from the start. She avoided eye contact, did not exchange pleasantries, seemed like she’d rather be anywhere else. But we just assumed she was stressed due to the large party next to us. We got 4 appetizers that we waited probably 45 minutes for. (Chowder, Bao Buns, Dumplings, Muscles). Chowder and Dumplings were alright. Bao buns were burnt and garnished with the chef’s hair, yummy. Muscles we’re mediocre for a dockside restaurant. Then we waited another 45 minutes for our entrees. Keep in mind we’ve spent more than 3 hours on these premises at this point. The waitress probably visited the table twice the entire time. Our hostess from earlier brought out our food and checked up on us more than anyone else for some reason. Two of us got chicken, two of us got burgers, and another got sushi. The sushi was good, standard. Can’t screw it up being you don’t need to cook it I guess. Both burgers were cooked well done or more if that’s possible. They were ordered medium rare and medium. We kept one because we were starving at this point and sent the other (medium rare) back, which I’ve done maybe one other time in my life. The replacement was also over cooked but closer. For a “Brisket-Steak Burger”, I’d almost die on the hill that it was a Bubba Burger. But edible nonetheless. The chicken was alright, didn’t look appetizing whatsoever and somewhat dry. Better off just getting frozen chicken thighs from Costco — they have more flavor. Our plates got cleared, we haven’t been visited by our waitress in probably an hour by this point. She seems to be gravitating towards the table taking up half the restaurant. Being we sat at a cleared table for as long as we did, we decided to go find the hostess to pay our bill. In short, we were here for the entirety of our evening and spent upward of $300 (plus an extra $200 at their bar prior to being seated) for an experience simply defined as garbage. Service was horrible. Food subpar. Do not waste your time and money coming to this travesty of a restaurant.
Everything was great but pertion are so small it’s not enough to eat well
Only good thing about this place was the atmosphere. Otherwise everything else was horrible. Food was horrendous and extremely overpriced for the quality. Service even worse! Clearly they cater to their regulars/locals and could care less about any newcomers. They pretty much ignored us the whole meal and never asked how the food is or if we needed anything else. We had high hopes but were greatly disappointed!
The food was mediocre, the lobster roll was dry. The mussel order was small & came w 4 small slices of bread. When we asked for more bread they brought two burnt slices & when we got the bill we’re charged $2 for the bread - offensive. Go for a drink($18 for a small pour in plastic cup) & eat elsewhere
Terrible service! Food was good but the service wrecked our entire experience.
Burger was horrific . Over cooked, dried out, hockey puck, no flavor and extremely salty. $28 for non edible burger. Give it a miss.
After waiting 30 minutes at the bar without being acknowledged as regulars got served behind me, I asked the bartender what I needed to do to get a drink and was told "maybe try not being so rude". The bar was infested with yellow jackets and the bar was disgustingly filthy with empty cans and bottled piled up everywhere. The staff was young, rude, inexperienced, and full of ego. Avoid at all costs.
