Opinions de Fish Guts San Diego
Fish Guts in Barrio Logan is the kind of place that proves you don’t need a fancy setup to serve outstanding food and drinks. The space itself is pretty simple, but what comes out of the kitchen absolutely delivers. On a recent Friday evening my partner and I grabbed seats at the bar and shared a few different tacos: the De Espada (swordfish), De Coco (shrimp), and the Estilo Baja fish taco. Each one was excellent in its own way. The swordfish taco in particular stood out, but honestly all three were fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. We were served by a friendly young waiter whose name I unfortunately didn’t catch. He mentioned he grew up in the neighborhood and was genuinely warm, attentive, and outgoing. Service like that always makes the experience feel more personal. For drinks, I had the Pepino Santo, which I highly recommend. It was refreshing and perfectly balanced. My partner tried the Smokey Mango and enjoyed that one just as much. If you’re used to grabbing tacos across the border in Tijuana, the prices here might cause a little sticker shock at first. But for San Diego, and especially for tacos of this quality, the pricing really isn’t surprising. One small tip: if it’s a chilly evening like it was when we visited, you may want to sit inside away from the open windows or bring a jacket. Great tacos, great drinks, and a relaxed neighborhood vibe. We’ll definitely be back.
This place was recommended by a local so we decided to check it out after a trip to the SD Zoo. So glad we made the quick detour, as this place is a gem. Just a handful of counter spaces indoors and a long counter outside but a great vibe and excellent menu. Blackened local swordfish, Modelo battered white fish were our selections, topped with slaws and sauces that were over the top. Wine margaritas with house made syrup completed the effect. Super fresh food, delicious cocktail, great service made this a memorable experience.
Hands down the best thing we ate during our entire girls weekend trip! It was two of us and we had to wait to be seated for about 15 minutes since seating is limited. The servers were great, efficient and friendly. And the food!!! I got the coconut shrimp tacos and swordfish tacos and wow! So flavorful and fresh! I got the hibiscus sweet tea also which was so floral and pretty! Highly recommend a visit here!
Fish Guts’ website is a little misleading in its description, but I will tell you that they execute a taco like no other. A definite step up from your traditional street taco, Fish Guts’ portion sizes don’t mess around. The fresh corn tortillas are *chef’s kiss*. The slaw gives it a perfect crunchy freshness. And the two tacos per order is plenty. Highly recommend the Estilo Baja (beer battered fish) and the De Coco (coconut shrimp). The little extra wait is totally worth the fresh seafood, some might say, masterpiece. Easy drop in for lunch for some tacos and a beer… can’t get much better than that.
This is the BEST fish tacos in town!!! Hands down. Amazing service, amazing micheladas, good margaritas, dessert was yummy (coconut pudding), fish dip was perfect. Highly recommend
So good I went back two days in a row. The fish tacos are beautifully cooked, well flavored, and made fresh to order! 10000% recommend, anything you get will be amazing. My favorite is the coconut shrimp taco and smoked fish dip—both are perfection (and the staff are so, so sweet!!)
The tacos were delicious but the fish dip is the standout!!! Fun, quick service and casual space, including outdoor seating with optimized people watching. Highly recommend visiting and bringing a friend so you can try multiple tacos. Definitely order the fish dip if they have it!!!
This place is a hidden gem! No misses - the entire menu is perfection. We tried every item and loved them all. I love the De Coco tacos, but you can't go wrong. The margs were so fun too! Alejandro was a wonderful bartender/server - so sweet and helpful. We will definitely be back soon. I wish we had Fish Guts in NYC too.
Alright so I've driven by this place multiple times and there is ALWAYS a line. So today my daughter and I got there before they opened which was at Noon. We got in line 5 minutes before opening and we were #7&8 in line. The hostess/waitress was very nice and explained the menu since it was our first time. We ordered the Jarritos, and their Hibiscus Sweet Tea . The Smoked Fish Dip was FIRE 🔥🔥it came with some spice. It was SUPER fresh and paired with the Ritz crackers was PERFECTION! Now I ordered the Estilo Baja. It was OUTSTANDING. That chipotle aioli was WONDER. It definitely packs some heat. My daughter ordered the Fish and Chips. Their version is a little different than most cause it was like a potato salad. Definitely different, but FRESH and tasty. Overall 10/10 would definitely return when they open so I don't have to wait in line long. They do not take to go orders so the only way to enjoy this freshness is to wait in line. As we were leaving the line was down the block. Try them out. You won't be disappointed.
🍜 Food: Artisan fish tacos. 👩💼Service: Personalible, friendly. 🏠 Atmosphere: Small, cute date vibes 💸 Price: $20 - 40 per person
The best fish tacos and margaritas we had from our long list of taco places recommended by friends. Fish was incredibly fresh and cooked properly. Tortillas were homemade and the slaw used on each taco was unique and complimented the fish well Drinks were made to perfection. Cucumber margaritas was our favorite. Service was warm and friendly despite a line out the door both times. Even if you have to wait to get a table, it’s well worth the wait.
The shrimp taco was a die for! And the homemade tortillas were just the icing on the cake!!! I wish they sold them separately so we could take them home 🙈 Here’s a tip. We drove by on the weekend and there was a line every time, but when we came during the week during the day, we got to walk right in and sit down. Obviously, only some people have time to do that, but I do believe that even if you do have to wait, it’s worth it.
Hands down best fish tacos in San Diego. Very fresh fish and everything is made to order. The coconut shrimp taco was so flavorful with nice jumbo local shrimp. The blackened swordfish was cooked perfect with fresh crisp slaw.
Stopped by Fish Guts today for lunch with a good friend from high school, and it did not disappoint! I ordered the De Coco (coconut-battered Baja shrimp with Mexican coleslaw, pico de gallo, and chipotle aioli) along with the De Espada (blackened local swordfish with jalapeño slaw and spicy aioli). Both tacos were packed with flavor—crispy, fresh, and perfectly balanced. To top it off, I had their Agua de Hibiscus Sweet Tea, which was super refreshing and paired perfectly with the meal. The service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was laid-back but inviting—perfect for catching up over good food. I already know my next order will be the Fish & Chips… can’t wait to come back! 👉 Highly recommend checking this spot out if you’re craving fresh, flavorful seafood with a twist!
The best fish tacos in San Diego. Their renditions are slightly elevated than the average and they are absolutely delicious. The swordfish taco was meaty, well-seasoned, and balanced with a fresh creamy slaw. Their mushroom and manchego taco was also incredible. Every taco is served on a thick, tasty corn tortilla. The corn flavor is not overpowering and compliments the various fillings well. The dining area is clean and simple, though not particularly spacious. Expect to be seated near some other people, but that’s okay - everyone was friendly!

I've driven by here countless of times and I wish I would've tried this restaurant out a lot sooner. Fresh, local caught fish and handmade tortillas. They don't add any preservatives or offer to-go orders, which was very interesting, but it shows how much pride this restaurant and their employees take in their food. I tried their smoked fish dip and blackened swordfish tacos with a Mexican craft beer. Our waitress, Ariana, was very pleasant and friendly; impeccable hospitality. I'll definitely be coming back here before I move.

I order a drink with ice and got mostly ice so my serving drink was without ice and I could taste the hibiscus 🌺 more tacos worth it the whole menu is simple but tasty
Such a cute indoor–outdoor taco spot! We showed up at 12:10 on a Wednesday and it was already half full. I love a small menu — you can tell they’re focused on doing everything really well. We ordered almost all the tacos: the shrimp taco, fish and chips, swordfish, and the estilo Baja. Everything tasted super fresh, and the house-made tortillas are excellent. The service is also so quick and efficient! I loved their take on the fish and chips taco, and the blackened swordfish was especially delicious. The fish is clearly fresh, the tacos feel nicely elevated, and the service is quick. The tacos come out as they’re ready, which I know is totally normal, but I personally prefer them all at once so I can try everything together — just a small personal preference. Otherwise, everything was really great.
It was our first time here and the tacos are really nice. I ordered the Fish & Chips. I asked how the potatoes would served as there are no fries on the menu and this did not disappoint at all. I let my friends try the potato salad topping and they ended up ordering another to share. The tortilla were soft and fresh and the fish was seasoned well. Very nice spot.
A place with phenomenal decor and great food! Unique tacos! The tortillas they use are made in house and great! The bets taco is definitely the coconut shrimp and the vibes are great. Usually a line but it moves quickly!
A quaint little restaurant with patio seats that permit people watching. The coconut shrimp taco was 🔥 and the Jamaica iced tea to top it off was perfect. Would recommend for lunch or a quick snack, not dinner.

Very good tortilla and a solid fish taco. The Baja could’ve been crisper, and I always appreciate the option of a hot salsa—strangely, they don’t offer any salsa at all. Service is casual table service and it works. I’ll definitely be back because I love the barrio, and the food was delicious—but I can’t call it the best fish taco in town.
I was so so so freakin excited to try Fish Guts but left utterly disappointed. I showed up a few minutes after 12 and the place was almost full but I got a good seat at the counter. I asked the waitress if they had the fish sandwich back but she didn't have an answer and said it's basically still off the menu. But later I spoke with SD locals who said the waitress was wrong and the sandwich is there. So I don't know who to believe. I started with the smoked fish dip. This was fine. You can't even tell it has fish in it. Which might be fine for someone who doesn't like fish, but when you're at a fish restaurant ordering a fish dish, you want to taste the fish. This just tasted like a serrano dip because the heat from the serranos overpowered everything else. Now for the baja fish tacos. More like coleslaw tacos because there was so much spicy coleslaw on these tacos you wouldn't even know that you're eating a fish taco. The tortillas are fantastic. Actually, the tortillas are perfect. They're soft, warm, chewy, and flavorful. But the rest is a mess. The fish itself is flaky and soft but the batter was soggy and mush. And the size of the fish is like a chicken nugget compared to the tortilla. I'm not expecting a whole filet on here since these are "Street tacos" but c'mon. two bites and the fish was gone, then you're just eating tortilla and coleslaw. There is so much coleslaw that you don't taste anything else either. After talking to others, everyone said the baja tacos are not the thing to order but rather you should order the sandwich (if / when they ever bring it back) and the swordfish tacos. I don't know if I would return but right now, I wasn't fond of this spot.
