Let me start by saying 'Thank you god for sending us here'. This cute little place served the best buritto sandwich I have ever had as a vegetarian - Soy chorizo sandwich for breakfast. The salsa was fresh! Nachos were great. My husband got a scramble burrito and tofu con veggie fajitas tostada. Quantity size was great. We had to pack 2 of them to go. Which we enjoyed as dinner. It kept us full the whole day. The service was great too! My greedy heart could easily have had more free nachos 😅😅.
So yummy! Family style Mexican. Best Flautas I’ve ever had. And Elda our server was top notch
Luis was our server and he was personable, kind, helpful, and funny! The food was wonderful, I got the shredded beef tacos and I loved them.
Love this place! It's great because if you're vegan, it's a place you can bring your non-vegan friends to. So... we always bring our friends and family here when they visit. The service is great, it's dog friendly (outside patio), and everyone is so nice. We've been coming here for over 7 years and love everything about it.
We came here after walking by a few times. The staff were very friendly and knew their menu inside out. The horchata was amazing (my daughter said it tasted like Christmas!) and we were able to order bespoke burritos with no problem.
We went here on a whim and were so happy we did. The food was fantastic. The service was top notch the woman serving us (possibly the owner) was super friendly and helpful. Everything came out hot and fresh. I wish I would have taken pics of the food but I forgot. I did get a picture of the margarita flight that was delicious. My daughter got a strawberry smoothie and it was also delicious. All of the drinks tasted like they had fresh fruit in them and the delivery was beautiful. Price was reasonable. I would definitely go back if I was in the area again.
No better place for two vegans and a vegetarian who wanted Mexican food! We had a reservation, but really did not need one on a Saturday night. We were seated promptly and the chips and salsa were put in front of us. The chips were homemade I believe and the salsa was spicy. We ordered a larger bowl of guacamole to go with that as well. The atmosphere is nice, colorful and decorated the only thing missing is a piñata. The service was wonderful from the owner I believe. She talked to us for a while about some of the ingredients in the food. The menu has about 1/2 devoted to vegan and vegetarian items. Many proteins are supplied in vegan form for the dishes. Many different forms of beef can be obtained in vegan versions. That is a really nice thing when you’re eating Mexican food. It is much appreciated. A variety of the Mexican dishes are made with vegetables, including eggplant, mushrooms, and many other things. Vegan cheese is available as well. The three of us had different entrées. One, who was not that hungry had Spanish rice, black beans, and pico de gallo. Said it was all wonderful. Second person had a quesadilla with soy chorizo and vegan cheese. Also delicious. Third entrée was an enchilada trio, vegetarian with one cheese, enchilada, one tofu, enchilada, and one bean enchilada. One of them had a wonderful authentic molé sauce with cocoa, roasted peppers And not sure what else, but it was terrific. A cold Modelo Negro on top rounded out the dinner. There are many desserts, including both vegan and non-vegan forms of rice pudding. Would definitely come again prices are very reasonable.
Hugo's was my first date after baby #3. All I wanted was Mexican food and I am so glad we chose Hugo's. The food was exceptional, with top-quality meats that were perfectly prepared. Every dish was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with high-quality ingredients. The margaritas were soooo smooth, perfectly sweet, and incredibly refreshing...and they have the cutest vibe both indoor and outdoor, we ate on the patio, it was so serene.
The food and service was great. Most places only offer 1-2 vegan options but this gem has a full page dedicated to vegan/vegetarian dishes. They even have a vegan horchata (not on menu). I had the vegan fish, birria, and shiitake tacos with beans and rice. I wouldn't order the shiitake tacos again, they were a bit bland. The other two were fantastic.
What a wonderful place! Let’s start with the fact that the staff is wonderfully friendly and the service fantastic. Add to that the plethora of Vegan options on the menu (literally dozens), and the dishes bursting with flavor, and you have a perfect place for vegans and non-vegans alike. We had the tofu enchilada with vegan cheese, a pineapple tamale, and birria taco made of jackfruit and mushrooms (it was a daily special). Everything was stellar and the margarita flight is also highly recommended. Can’t recommend this place enough!
Good food, especially the Enchiladas trio is definitely to try for. Vegan and vegetarian options are great as well. The staff is kind and friendly. The ambiance is also relaxing and great inside and outside. Service is fairly quick. Be mindful that the credit card service charge is there. Equally cash discount does exist but not much.
Hugo's Cocina , the family-owned Mexican restaurant located in the heart of Ocean Beach, San Diego, is a great place for tasty Mexican food, whether in a small group or large. The owner, Georgina, and her staff, are outstanding. The menu at Hugo's Cocina features a variety of traditional Mexican dishes, as well as SEVERAL vegan and vegetarian options. The food is made fresh to order, and the portions are generous. The prices are also very reasonable. We had a reunion of nearly 50 of our college friends at this place a couple of weeks back. Georgina worked with us on the menu, catering to every group needs, on the seating, the decor and other arrangements. She was proactive in suggesting options that would make the experience unique. Georgina and her staff were friendly and attentive despite the large group. We would definitely recommend Hugo's Cocina to anyone looking for a great Mexican meal in Ocean Beach. Here are some of the highlights of our meal: The chips and salsa were fresh and flavorful. The guacamole was creamy and delicious. The enchiladas were made with fresh, flavorful ingredients. The margaritas were strong and refreshing. The service was friendly and attentive. We would definitely recommend Hugo's Cocina to anyone looking for a great Mexican meal in Ocean Beach.
This has to be the most vegan-friendly Mexican restaurant we have ever been to Hugo's offers vegan cheese, vegan chicken, vegan chorizo and even vegan fish which was so spectacularly prepared in their fish tacos They are horchata is to die for. The portions are really huge and the food is not as spicy as I expected perhaps it was meant for tourists however make sure you ask for the hot sauce and which are all homemade. They do take out and they deliver and frankly it is one of the best Mexican vegan restaurants we have ever been to.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 4.0/4.5 — Hugo’s Mexican Food (Sunset Cliffs, O.B.) Stopped by Hugo’s Mexican Food off Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach, and it honestly hit the spot. The food was authentic and on point — from the Carne Asada Torta to perfectly crisp chips to the flavorful salsas. Everything tasted fresh. The service was friendly and attentive, and the server was professional ,polite , & friendly. made the experience even better. If anything, the only thing I’d suggest is maybe adding a bit of music or background ambiance to match the great food and atmosphere. It would take the vibe to the next level. Overall, definitely a solid spot in O.B. for good Mexican food. ---
I really wanted to like this place, but overall it was a bit disappointing. I came mainly for their extensive vegan and vegetarian menu. The staff was very friendly and welcoming, and they even recommended their most popular vegan burrito when I asked. Unfortunately, the burrito was underwhelming and just didn’t taste good. I’m not sure if it was my choice or just an off day, but it missed the mark for me. It would have been helpful if the menu clearly highlighted popular items. I also ordered the tamarindo margarita, while it was strong, the flavor was below average. That said, the ambiance was lovely, colorful, aesthetic, and inviting, with cute outdoor tables that added to the overall vibe.
Food was good and when we went, there was plenty of seating since it was slow. I give it 3 stars because they don't offer any pork on their menu. Can you be Mexican and not have carnitas? When asked, they said it's a food safety thing because they offer an extensive vegan and vegetarian menu and cannot cross contaminate with meat and would be required to have a separate grill. They cited food safety regulations, but I looked it up, and it doesn't seem to be a thing for normal restaurants. But, if you keep kosher, it's good to know. Also, they serve other meats, which I'm sure they share a grill, so there's that is you are strict vegan. Food was good. Service was good. Cocktails were okay. Kid friendly for sure. I would give it 4 stars if it wasn't for the carnitas thing.
Well it is personally difficult to grade a place that just does not make the cut. The atmosphere is so appealing. After Ortega’s closed down, I started the search for a new “ortega’s”. Unfortunately, this is not the place. Per my standard move, I went for the combo that can tell you everything about their recipes. I found it very bland and unexceptional. Not real character or spicy 🌶️ like flavors with authentic Mexican. Needless to say, it wasn’t what I hoped for. I understand it is focused on “healthy” dishes. I’d rather risk a flavorful taco somewhere else. On goes the search.
I went for the vegan food (heard it was good) and the food was horrible. I feel so bad for saying that, but the food wasn’t it. Very bland and no flavor. The sweet potato quesadilla was recommended and it was like a can of mixed vegetables mixed with tiny pieces of sweet potato and the tortilla wasn’t good all the way. It was so gross it went in the trash. I also got the Birria taco and I’m not sure what the sauce was (tasted like taco sauce from a jar with spices added to it. It was not good either. After that, I cx my order for the Carna asada burrito . The waitress was nice. The place looks like it could use a good deep cleaning.
I’ve avoided this place for a very long time, because I’d heard of too many instances of cross contamination and finding meat in vegan orders. This week, I decided I’d give them a try, and I guess I’m glad to report that I haven’t been missing out on anything. I have pretty low standards for food. If something is “just okay”, I’ll likely return. Unfortunately, almost every item I ordered was bad. Nopale tacos - bad. Sweet potato tacos - bad. Veggie tamal - bad. Vegan pollo taco - not bad, but found myself questioning if it was real chicken or not. Still unsure, and still quite uncomfortable about it. Not to mention the “convenience fee” of ordering online? First time I’ve seen that - not convenient at all. The only redeeming quality was the rice and beans - these were very tasty, but probably not suitable for vegans. And I am very very grateful for the separate vegan menu. Not enough places offer this. I don’t like leaving negative reviews. But this was a bad experience, and I do wish I could get my $70 back. (forgot to mention, we paid extra for potatoes on the side and never received the potatoes)
This place used to be my go-to. Over the past couple of years I’ve seen their prices increase as quality of service and food decrease. Today was the final. They put dairy on my food. I’ve been vegan for about 20 years and know when it’s real. They argued with me about whether it was vegan and then said something about how they are inspected by the city and therefore cannot use non vegan items. Um… the health department doesn’t care about veganism. Also, they are not 100% vegan so they absolutely can (and do) sell dairy items.
