Opinions de Oscar’s seafood San Diego
Overall very good, was immediately greeted and offered a soup as we looked over the menu. We ordered two battered fish tacos (3.75 a piece) a battered shrimp taco (4.75) and a smoked fish taco (7.50ish) they were all made in house and delicious! Service was great and there was plenty of seating.
Sure fish tacos came from Baja originally and sure it was probably angel shark and thresher before cod/halibut/haddock/flounder/wahoo, but there is something about the simplicity of fresh corn tortilla, fresh fish beer battered, thinly sliced cabbage, crema, salsa, lime. With TJ influencing it's very common to see avocado/guacamole added. Oscars keeps it original and keeps things fresh. They season the fish, beer batter which most places don't. Most places rely on the acoutremounts. I personally wished they didn't offer flour tortillas or used red onions and used a seasoned crema, use guacamole more than avocado slices. It's a bright, clean place that's simple. The burrito is the one dish that I like flour versus corn and which can actually hold full bites of ingredients. Cucarachas are good, but could use garlic (would really do well if it was more of a North Shore style). Garden Seafood salad is solid as it's a little bit like a ceviche. Their ceviche is one of the places that I consistently get the scallop more than the shrimp. They smoke their own fish for their torta de oscar and the fishermans torta is fantasitc with spicy, texture (skip the cabbage here) . It's pricey, but when most places skimp on the seafood and freshness you don't regret spending the money here. I really want them to have a campechana. Service is pretty good for how casual it is and you'll think you order too much because it looks and sounds so good, but I've never left stuffed to the gills even eating a burrito, torta, ceviche.
An excellent spot for Mexican-style seafood: ceviche, tacos, tortas, etc. Their ceviche is excellent, the fish and shrimp ceviche are traditional, the blue fin ceviche has an Asian twist - soy sauce, ginger, sesame seeds. The tacos are excellent and if you are in the mood for something lighter then I recommend you pick your favorite grilled fish over a salad. Don't forget a homemade agua fresca with your meal.
Hands down the BEST shrimp tacos I've ever had- Happy Hour specials! I ordered 3 thinking they would be small and I was pleasantly surprised by the flavor and quantity. The place filled up quickly as we ate. Fast, friendly service and absolutely worth the stop! Definitely recommend!!
Whenever I visit San Diego, I will try to make it out to Oscar's just to get the beer battered fish tacos. It's even better if you can make it for happy house. The tacos are a must try and their sauces are really good. I've had a breakfast burrito once and it was so freaking good. The ceviche is also worth trying. It can get really busy here and parking is a nightmare. But trust, it is worth it for the food!
Great casual Mexican seafood spot. Authentic. Set up is great for take out, but enough tables for around 20. They offered fish soup samples, which had excellent broth and plenty of meat and vegetables. The grilled octopus taco was balanced and substantial. Others in our party enjoyed fried fish and smoked fish tacos.
This was the first place I ate at after arriving in San Diego for the first time. The lady behind the counter was so sweet and helpful, as were the other members of the staff. The torta I had didn't hold back in size and taste, and every scoop of the shrimp cerviche was packed with flavour and zest.
Oscar’s is easily one of my favorite spots for Mexican seafood in San Diego. The fish tacos are next-level—fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. Our favorites are the especial, octopus, battered shrimp, and grilled spicy shrimp taco. Don't forget to use their freshly made sauces in the fridge along with an assortment of other hot sauces. Their fish stew is also surprisingly fresh and savory. Portions are generous, prices are fair, and the casual vibe makes it the perfect stop whether you’re grabbing a quick bite or hanging with friends. This location has inside seating and easier parking since it's located in a strip mall. A must stop it you're in the SD area.
A sincerly nice joint for a great bite of seafood. It's lovely food, made with love, with fresh in-house made salsas and agua frescas. I will say due to its popularity and the small size of the actual resteraunt, it *does* get super crowded at peak eating times. But what sets this place apart from other wonderful eateries? Veronica. She's almost always the cashier you speak to at the register to order your meal, and she's a literal angel. She's sweet, kind, and sp patient. She'll call you "sweetie" or "mija/mijo" and she means it. She's happy to tell you all about the menu items, and never skimps on twlling you how *she* likes it (spoiler alert: she's always right, imho). So come to Oscar's for the amazing mariscos (the fisherman's torta is INSANE) but stay for mama Veronica, because she's the heart and soul of this place. ❤️
I thought this place was great. We started with the ceviche which was awesome. They only had shrimp so we tried that. 5/5 I ordered the skirt steak, surf and turf and smoked fish tacos. My fav was the surf and turf. All were good but the surf and turf was exceptional. The smoked fish was unique and good but not something I’d order regularly. 5/5 Atmosphere was counter service with outdoor dining 3/5
My favorite fish taco spot in San Diego. The veggie to protein ratio is balanced so 2 tacos are pretty filling. My favorite is the chipotle aioli sauce. The guacamole needed a little salt. The horchata was sweet and tasty. Overall, a hearty meal. Our 4 tacos, 2 horchatas, and chips with guac came out to $40 with tip.
We got lunch and were so happy to get the variety and flavors of all the food. We went to go and try the smoked fish tacos and came away with every item that interested us. The octopus taco was amazing! The service was slow but there were a high number of people there and we weren’t in a rush. They offer free fish soup for all patrons. It’s really hot temperature wise so be careful to not burn your tongue.
Nothing screams San Diego more than some good fish tacos and Oscar’s is the place to get them. Everything on the menu here is delicious and cooked to perfection. There’s a lot of intense competition for good tacos in SD but you won’t be let down by this spot. The battered fried fish tacos here were super fresh and well constructed. The sauces they offer on the side paired super well with everything we ate so I would recommend trying them all as each is slightly different. However the underdog star of the meal was the smoked fish breakfast burrito. I’ve had breakfast burritos and smoked fish before but never in a combo like this and the flavors here were incredible. If you only try one item make it this. Staff at this location is very friendly and plenty of parking was available. Can’t wait to come back.
Absolutely the best tacos I’ve tried in San Diego. If you’re here order the surf and turf (recommended by them) - the combination of steak and shrimp was out of this world. You would definitely want to take another to go. Other really good ones was the mixed seafood trio taco and the baja fish taco (a little dryer than the other two, so have this with the sauces provided).
We planned to have ramen at next door and it was closed. So we walked into Oscars, and it is Taco Tuesday today! $1.99 for a big fish taco!!! The fish is so fresh and nicely fried. I highly recommend anyone who loves fish tacos to try this out. For this price, I can’t complain anything and plus it actually is very delicious. I also tried a vegetarian soy chorizo taco, it was a little bit too salty for me. I will skip this the next time.
Parking at this location is tough! The surf and turf torta is just OK but falls apart with the soft bread. The meat is exceptional and the sauces are delicious. The ceviche is excellent, plenty of seating, and good customer service. The food comes out quickly too.
Great service. Was given a cup of their seafood stew while we were deciding on what to order. Very hearty seafood stew with a chicken base. The taco especial was particularly great. Surf n tuf, which is usually my go to at taco shops was a little disappointing. I guess it goes to say that they are a seafood establishment and each and every seafood-based dish was fantastic
Oscars is a cute, no frills, taqueria specializing in seafood tacos. The menu was relatively simple, with not too many options, but enough for most palates. You walk up to the register and place your order. When ready, they announce your number and you pick up your food from the counter. The person that took our order was not personable or particularly friendly. He was very matter of fact, making the service average (neither good nor bad). We had the fish and shrimp tacos. The fish and shrimp were fried. The cilantro and onions were plentiful and fresh. The tacos were solid. They definitely would have benefited from a lime wedge, and I highly recommend using the sauces on the table for additional flavor. The chips and guacamole were made fresh. The chips were excellent! The guacamole would have been delicious with an addition of a bit of salt. Personally, I would have preferred a non-fried fish and shrimp option, but that was not available. Overall, the food was tasty and would recommend. Know, it’s not the “best ever”, but it’s really good.
