Sycamore Den is a popular neighborhood bar known for its friendly bartenders (Danielle, Jasmine, Shayne, Eileen), great cocktails, and cozy, retro vibe. Happy hour and free popcorn are big draws. Music can sometimes be loud.

This place gave me a divey vibe for all the good reasons! KP was an awesome bartender amidst trivia night, and prices were way too fair. Definitely give this place a look! Modest outdoor area too if trying to catch up with an old friend amongst the crowd inside.
Good times on Thursday for sure!!! Small, hipster spot. Super nice!
Great cocktails, great ambiance. Newest back patio is fantastic. Also, I am a certified God at the ring game.
So this was my first time at the sycamore den, and the king hahahah and Jon were awesome! They welcomed me and my husband with open arms, and they served us all afternoon! They had great knowledge on drinks and they were fast and efficient with service! Highly recommend!
The space is modern retro that feels warm and comfortable. Low lighting and great music selection. Bartenders were spot on with recommendations and drinks were as good as advertised. Laid back vibe, craft cocktails and beer. Great neighborhood hangout.
Love love love! Bartenders are attentive and music is always on point. I catch myself dancing like I am in the shower alone and I have to stop because I realize it's way too much for the general public to appreciate.
Probably the best spot we've found in San Diego for low key day drinking. The drinks are great and the bartenders are creative and nice. The popcorn is definitely an added bonus. If you're looking for a chill place to spend some time (especially on a warm San Diego afternoon), this would be a great call.
The cocktails are great, try the wolf ticket or an old fashioned. I prefer to go early when it is quiet but they also have a lot of events like drag bingo, live band kareoke, burlesque, and trivia.
I came during Adam's Unplugged. I've been here a couple times before and was satisfied with the service. I hit a few bumps on this last trip here, but ended up being totally satisfied with the outcome. Garrett was my server the entirety of my visit and he was very attentive and friendly. I also was able to order food, which comes from the neighboring bar named Burnside and took a little over 40 mins to arrive. I'm a very patient guy, but this was a little more than I'm use to. Garrett was very apologetic and said that the food was on him. I would've taken a discount, but he went beyond and understood the inconvenience he put me through and comped the food. From what I saw from the rest of the staff, they were very friendly, easy going and attentive. I would definitely come back. It's definitely worth the trip.
we stumbled upon this gem while visiting San Diego and staying nearby — and what a find! The moment we heard Blink-182 playing as we approached, we took it as a sign we had to check it out, and it did not disappoint. The vibe was laid-back yet full of energy, with a great mix of music, ambiance, and personality that immediately drew us in. I ordered the Pisco Sour craft cocktail, and it was absolutely top-notch — perfectly balanced and so refreshing. Cody, our bartender, made the experience even better. He was friendly, attentive, and clearly knows his way around a cocktail shaker. Being within walking distance of our Airbnb was a bonus, but this place is worth going out of your way for. It’s officially on our list of must-visit spots whenever we’re in San Diego!
Turning into one of my favorite spots for an after work drink. Cocktails always executed perfectly, bartenders always friendly (shoutout to Jasmine, Shayne & Eileen), and free popcorn to munch on. They also have a great happy hour!
Love the vibe, it's cozy and retro with well priced drinks and a good happy hour. They sometimes have live music on the weekends (website says every Thursday but we were there on a Saturday night and they had a band playing.) The patio out back is great too!
Quant little bar with an old Western flare. Friendly upgrade service and a get DJ in the house in this night. Nice patio in back and I love the wallpaper in the bathroom. Very impressed with the quality of their popcorn. A must try.
A cozy cabin with a delightful patio and signature drinks that tie it all together! Despite the rush and limited staffing, drinks still came out quickly and to the highest quality.
Updated for 2022: the pandemic didn’t touch this neighborhood gem. Still charming, old-fashioned but laid back bar. No dress code, low prices, and cheesy movies on the screen. An easy recommendation.
Fun place to go. Great drinks and service. Had fun playing music trivia bingo.
A+ bar in normal heights. Sometimes the music can get so loud it’s hard to have a conversation, but still a really fun atmosphere. Street parking only.
Great cocktails, friendly service, quality cocktails, some fun games (if that’s your thing), and super cool homey vintage vibe. Cocktails are $3 cheaper on average than, say, Polite Provisions. Give this place a go! PS— free popcorn!

Just had a couple of beers there, nice venue with some arcade games, much more peaceful than Rabbit hole
One of the few bars in SD with consistent, amazing service. Everyone is so friendly and attentive, very refreshing. Great atmosphere and drinks as well :)
I just recently moved to the area and had been to some other places on Adams. Last night was my first time at the Syc and I had a great time. Danielle was my bartender and she was polite, friendly and professional. The service was absolutely top notch and worth every bit of the $3 tip I left. Even the bartender who clocked in to relieve her was on point. She clocked in and literally turned around and asked if I needed another drink. She was ready. I will definitely be back often and see myself being a regular here. Atmosphere was very chill. I was alone so that’s what I was looking for. They had live music which was very entertaining and fun to watch. I love this place! P.S. I was kidding! I did not leave a $3 tip. Please spare me 😭
Great happy hour that runs every day from 5-7. Cold beer and fast service. When Eileen plays music it takes the bar to another level. Thank you !
Just moved in to the neighborhood Justin kp Eileen made feel home! Can’t wait to be back
The best cocktail bar in Normal Heights, hands down. Fantastic, friendly staff always make it a fun night.
Stopped by Sycamore Den for a quick drink, and I have to say, it didn’t disappoint. The vibe was laid-back with great music, and the place had just the right energy—not too loud, not too quiet. I started with a Whiskey Sour, which was perfect, and followed it up with a Wolf Ticket—smooth, easy to drink, and made just right. The bartender was on it, making sure my glass didn’t stay empty for long. It’s little touches like that that make a place stand out. If you’re looking for a spot with solid drinks and a chill atmosphere, Sycamore Den is worth a visit!
I absolutely love the atmosphere here! 😍✨ The whole place has such a cozy, retro vibe that instantly makes you feel comfortable. It’s the kind of spot where you can relax, unwind, and just enjoy the moment. The drinks are reasonably priced, which is always a bonus, and their happy hour deals are definitely worth checking out. 🍹💸 They also host live music from time to time, which adds so much character to the experience. 🎶 The website mentions shows every Thursday, but when we visited on a Saturday night, there was a band playing and the energy was fantastic! It made the evening feel even more special and lively. Another highlight is the patio in the back — it’s a great space to hang out, especially when the weather is nice. 🌿🌙 Whether you’re inside soaking in the retro charm or outside enjoying the fresh air, this place has a vibe that keeps you coming back. I’d happily return again! 💛
It's perfect, don't come here! Great dive and cocktail bar mix. Great crowd and amazing bartenders! Order a beer on tap or an espresso martini, the range is top tier here!

The food tastes good and menu gives you lots of options. All of them sound tasty. I had fried chicken and waffle and my boyfriend had croque madamme. Both taste good and mine was a big portion for me. The service was not satisfying. They are busy and it is hard to get refilled.
Solid happy hour, but they try and scam you on the tips.
I didn't get the food. We just went for drinks during their regular trivia night. We liked the vibes, the service, the seating, the option for refillable self-serve popcorn. It was clean with a lot of options for drinks.
This place has a great vibe and great selection of beers and creative cocktails. Typically the staff is pretty friendly as well, but they can be a little moody. I asked what they recommended once and got a pretty pretentious answer. It's North Park though so, it's kind of what's to be expected. It didn't turn me off from returning though. The whiskey concoctions are worth it.
The first time we went it was cool. And I wore a Hawaiian shirt and I looked at every inch of the decor from top to bottom. I was enchanted by the stories/hype from multiple publications and wanted to taste for myself what it was. The drinks were stiff. The bartender friendly and the hearth illuminated our multiple drinks. Life was good. Months later. The second time impromptu I wasn't wearing a Hawaiian shirt, it's a hot San Diego day with a non AC house to come back to and the crowd was a little stiff. This time the drinks tasted different and there were 3 candles lit in the hearth. The place feels trendy. Was it me?
They serve great drinks at reasonable prices. The interior is nice and isn't divy; when its not packed or crowded, there's ample seating. If you just want a drink go early in the evening or during the week. If you want to mingle in a crowd, then Friday and Saturday evenings would be for you. Warning, when it gets crowded, it's hard to get to the bar or even get the bartender's attention.
I would say it is a simple place, which will definitely matching various moods. However, there was a slight issue with a shaky table. The staff made a commendable effort to address and resolve the matter promptly. Overall, a decent experience.
This place had a great lay out and vibe. Great selection of beer and craft cocktails. 4 stars because I happened to be there when a band was playing, which cramped the bar. The stage is right beside the door so it became hard to come and go, and just too loud to have a conversation. I'd go back on a night without a band, for sure.
Fun places to grab some craft cocktails on Adams. It is a very cozy and nice space. Perfect for a date or a group outing. The popcorn they have at the bar is a good complement to the drinks. Haven't tried any of the snacks, but I have no doubt they are as good as everything else.
Hipp Hipp hipster. I loved it. Cocktails were amazing! Two entertainers were great! Very kitchy
Only walked in to check out more options in the neighborhood. Was super busy and live music playing when I was there...which added to it's ambiance. I'm willing to give it a try.

This place used to be great. Good cocktails and good vibes. The last few times I’ve been in have been terrible; attitude-forward service, inconsistent drinks, poor selection of drinks and boring generic cocktails passed off as “Craft”. I know these guys can do better. I hope it improves.
Have been going here for years as go-to spot to relax and have a drink with friends or a nice date night, but recently the music is played way too loudly that you can’t hear anyone talk without screaming at each other. Drinks are good but now the atmosphere is not great.
Sadly, under the new management things have taken a turn for the worse. I say this as long time customer and even musician who’s played on their stage. I’ve seen this place go through about everything a bar CAN go through. So it was truly sad when all of our drinks that weren’t beer or wine were just not good. That in and of it self would be ok but then the DJ started and all of it together Was just not a good experience. And that sucks cause we loved that place.
Used to really love this bar - but it seems they have changed owners or something, because it suddenly feels very corporate. They got rid of the ski ball and pinball machine, the drinks menu has become super basic and lame, and drinks not very well made, the music is beyond terrible and too loud, they keep the front door open no matter how cold and say they are not allowed to close it.. The hip vibe of this place seems to have been removed. Sad.
They put an extra drink on my tab and refused to correct it
The new owners ruined this once amazing spot. The bartenders are out of their element and clearly don’t fit the vibe of what the bar was just months ago. They’re clueless. You’ll be sitting at the bar waiting for a drink for at least 20 minutes. And then you’ll have the bartender give you either a horribly mixed drink or something you didn’t even order. Or if you’re lucky she’ll ask you again what you ordered and then you’ll get the wrong drink still. This happened both on a busy night and a quiet night while under new ownership. The music has also changed and that was my favorite part about the bar. No more Joy Division, Morrissey, etc. Oh and the new menus while nice don’t even have prices, which have gone up. Stopped by trivia for the night and the place was a ghost town, which is unheard of for Sycamore Den trivia night. All the original bartenders are gone and it seems their regular patrons as well. This place has become a bro PB bar and I’m pretty sure that’s what the owners were going for. I also miss the skee ball and pinball machines as well, which were removed for more seating which I totally get. Two of those skee ball machines were broken anyway. But yeah, this bar has lot ALL of its soul and it is a sad time for Adams Ave and Normal Heights. What a shame.
Staff was super rude. The girl bar tending makes you feel like you’re stupid. I was just trying to ask for a recommendation and she literally told me Im asking too many questions. I asked the other bartender if I could order with him when he was just standing there looking into space and seems so bothered when I asked for help. Cool bar bad staff definitely not coming back.
Have NEVER been treated so bad by a bartender in my life. WILL NEVER GO BACK. He literally asked people who had just walked up to the bar for their drinks when I had been waiting 20 minutes, he then said I see you man and gave me the just wait finger. Chose to serve all the ladies first, then asked me to leave and said I was being "aggressive". No, girl. He just didn't want a big gay guy up his straight bar, and I'm not the only one according to others on Yelp who've also heard his homophobic BS in the past. Listen up you sheltered little ginger, you have no idea what aggression is. Your job is to serve, and you suck at it. Aside from him the atmosphere is terrible. The drinks were weak. The whole place feels like it is trying way too hard to be cool. Terrible.
I ordered a Moscow mule and then took a sip. It was bitter and contained no alcohol. I asked the bartender if she put alcohol in it and she looked me in the eye and said yes. Epic Fail

Place is terrible now compared to what it used to be. So sad. UPDATE/EDIT: The owner’s response asked for specifics, so here they are: I’ve visited this bar many times over the years and it used to be great, but the quality has shifted. One of my specific issues was being charged for a double that I personally watched the bartender free-pour, fill with mixer, and end up being weaker than a standard single. When a customer pays a premium for a double, it isn't “berating” staff to expect the basic effort of a measured pour to ensure they get what they paid for. If management’s first instinct is sarcasm rather than addressing consistency behind the bar, it confirms my original point: the place just isn't what it used to be.
