Opinions de Lucky Creation San Francisco
Located in the heart of Chinatown, Lucky Creation is the best of the Chinese vegetarian restaurants in San Francisco. While not the biggest or necessarily the cleanest, it has terrific food at good prices that can’t be found anywhere else. From their delicious dim sum (e.g., turnip cakes, bean curd sausage, dumplings, steamed buns, seaweed roll, gluten stuff) to their wonderful dishes of taro-stuffed tofu, eggplant, and green bell peppers with a sizzling black bean sauce, bean curd curry with bok choy, and lemon bean curd skin on their voluminous menu, you are sure to come away not only fully satisfied but also plotting your next visit. Too bad they don’t have a brown rice option. Lucky Creation is truly a gem in the rough. [Update: March 2019] I go here whenever I can and I've been doing so for about a quarter century now. Although not everything is strong on their really big menu of veg Chinese food, there are some foods that are simply outstanding. I especially want to shout out my fav: #18, Stuffed tofu, eggplant, and pepper (stuffed with a taro mixture) in a sizzling black bean sauce. It is not only excellent, delicious, and filling, but you literally cannot get this dish anywhere else in the world. I typically like to eat in and have tea with my meal, but today was a quickie, so I got some dim sum to go. I seriously can't get enough of their dumplings, but the turnip cakes, tofu skin rolls, seaweed rolls, and other stuff is really good, too. I always walk in hungry and happy, then eventually leave full and happy. As it should be.
IMPORTANT: CASH ONLY -- NO CARDS. It was very crowded when we got here, so it took some aggressive maneuvering to be noticed. When we were they told us wait and cleared us a table as soon as one opened that was big enough for the five of us. When we sat down, they were quick to bring us tea and menus. We all ordered pretty quickly and the food came at different times, but very quickly. It's a vegetarian only restaurant so as a vegetarian, I was thrilled. Two of the five of us weren't vegetarian and they still found things they enjoyed. I got the meatless chicken fried rice and it was delicious and for sure enough for one person. I'm glad we found this place and we will be coming back next time we're in town!
Potstickers and Chinese broccoli were especially tasty... And the stuffed eggplant with baked tofu entree was an interesting and yummy blend of textures. I wasn't a huge fan of the chow mein, but I was definitely a huge fan of the way this spot matched a craving for quick Chinese eats with needs for veggie options. Not my favorite, but glad it's there and would go again.
I liked their vegetable dishes. Lots of choices. Staff is very friendly. Their Daikon cake & walnut dessert is my favorite.
This place has been such a staple in my life, such a go-to place, it never even occured to me to write a review - I'd rather just go eat there again! But seeing the ridiculously low current rating for Lucky Creation here (only 4.2) I wanted to do try and nudge it in the right direction - UP. Listen, I get it: The place isn't fancy. To non-Chinese customers who've never been there before, the service may seem gruff. But they have been dishing out an incredible, delicious variety of very affordable vegetarian Chinese food since the world was young. My experience there has always been more than good. Example: When I lived in SF I ate there several times a month. Then I moved out of state and didn't get back to LC for four or five years. When I went back the first time after that break, and was standing outside, one of the waitresses saw me, recognized me (!!!) and waved me inside - AND she asked me if I wanted my favorite dish, the Sweet & Sour Pork. AFTER YEARS she remembered all that. So, for me, as a white woman, I can say that those customers who are put off by the service...Give it time. These are actually some of the nicest restaurant owners I have ever known. And the food is ALWAYS AMAZING. Sweet & Sour Pork, Almond Chicken, the Gluten Puffs, etc. It's the only thing that makes me wish i still lived in SF.
Great food and fast service and reasonably priced. I can't believe how good the food was
I'm not vegetarian but I love this restaurant. I came here with my mom a lot as a kid since I went to middle school nearby. (She isn't vegetarian either) Some of our favorites are the Wheat Gluten Puff Combinations which comes in curry sauce, sweet and sour sauce, and a vegetarian oyster sauce. I'm gluten intolerant now and this would definitely hurt my tummy, but you know what.... I think it's worth it! And it's pretty easy to get it as takeout as well since they have it upfront at the counter. Other dishes I really like are the Paopei Tofu and the Rice Rolls, both of which I vividly remember thoroughly enjoying as a kid. One important thing to keep in mind is that they are closed on Wednesdays, which has caught me off guard a few times when I wanted to get something on hump day. Parking is okay nearby, can be a little difficult since it is in Chinatown and on a hill, but there are parking garages nearby as well .

This might be my favorite restaurant in the world. Everything is at delicious, especially the eggplant, pepper, and bean curd stuffed with taro! Their gluten meat is fabulous. It's the kind of little hole in the wall, mom and pop place that I dream about. Very cozy and lived in. They just want to make you delicious food. The omnivores I've taken here love it, too! So good!!!
Very cute cozy hole in the wall place We tried the hot and sour soup, the Singapore noodles and the kung pao Good flavors but not super spicy Sweet servers, great service
We got the vegetarian char siu baos, and they were so so good!! The filling is very tasty. Couldn’t find where they’re at on the menu. We had heard they had some, and just directly asked them.
Great, simple food, all vegetarian. The hostess was really nice and welcoming. She answered a lot of our questions. We had Taro soup, ckaypot mushrooms rice, dumplings and a noodle dish. We also took sushi to go. The place was very busy fir takeouts - constant stream of people walking in for food to go. Dining area is very small but we had a good experience. Just 2 blocks from cable car museum.
So much yummy food and really great prices. I love getting gluten puffs and buns to go, $10/lb of puffs and the buns are only $2 each! The sushi rolls are also delicious, I've never had peanuts in sushi before but it hits the spot. The restaurant is small which is also why I like takeout. Very nice employees, my biggest complaint is just the limited hours. I had one bad experience with the lemon chicken that tasted like dirty dishwater but have have many good meals otherwise so I think 5 stars is still warranted.
Amazing!! Cash only so get some before you go. We got the spring rolls, chicken fried rice and chow mein. It was absolutely the best chow mein of my life! The chicken in the fried rice had a super real consistency and texture. Very reasonably priced and just an awesome place overall. So glad I found it and highly recommend!

My husband and I are vegetarians, and we loved this place! The owner was very kind and made recommendations. The portion sizes were huge so we had enough for a second meal. Great hole in the wall find!

Small place but a gem for vegetarians in the busy Chinatown. It was past 3:30 with the place closing at 4, we were still seated and order taken. We ordered the hot and sour soup, noodles and rice with curry and spring rolls, tasted delicious, was piping hot, freshly made and very filling. Highly recommendand will definitely visit again the next time we are in town. I think it is family owned and hope that it continues on. Every city needs unique places and little businesses to thrive.
I have enjoyed visiting Lucky Creation whenever I'm in Chinatown for over 20 years. This is not the best place for a sit-down meal (no-frills ambiance) or Chinese-American vegan (my vote would go to Oakland's Nature Vegetarian). My rating is for the dim sum is it is excellent! What more can you ask for than an abundant box of dumplings, char siu bao (my childhood favorite!), yuba rolls, and fake meat for under $10?! Take it to go and enjoy it while wandering up Grant to Columbus. Thank you Lucky Creation for your service!!!
Excellent restaurant! Highly recommend! Very tiny. I used to eat gluten and their mixed glutens are delicious. I miss eating them. But there are plenty of non gluten dishes too that are also delicious. Get a bag of the candied walnuts!!! Addictive tasty!
Ask for walnut soup. Can blend your own raw from sprouted nuts. And crispy noodles. Great generous display case. 'Pork' buns if correct. Rice ball/bun. Daikon 'cake' Great sweet, sour, savory tofu.
This is our favorite Chinese vegetarian restaurant in SF. They also have already made food you can buy to take home. I only gave four-star for service and atmosphere, because it is very Hong Kong authentic, if you know what I mean. :)

This is a surprisingly a great place to eat for all vegetarians or not. They use no soy sauce or msg, nothing that raises the heart rate. I ate the tofu dish with enoki mushrooms over noodles. Very good flavor, nothing was overpowering and nothing was salty. Good "hole in the wall" place to eat.
Taking a star from Service only bc I think prices are expensive, but the food is out of the world, staff is nice, and I like the hole in the wall vibe here
We ordered three things with 2 bowls of rice: 1. Hot and sour soup — probably my favorite of the three. More tomato than other ones I’ve tried but the flavor was great. 2. Sweet and sour pork — uses gluten as the protein and the sauce was on point. Gluten could use some stuffing in the middle as it felt like it could use some substance on the bite. 3. Tofu eggplant stuffed with taro — I enjoyed the interesting combination but it felt a bit heavy. Flavor was good though. The restaurant is more on the hole in the wall type of vibe, but service was fast and the staff was fast to help. I would stop by again to try more dishes as a vegetarian.
Although my wife did not like the food I thought it was passable and decent food. We ordered 5 dishes including the appetizer (large) given four of us. It was good but a bit too sweet. We also ordered “fun” or the wide noodle dish which was good particularly with some hot sauce which we asked for. We also had the bean curd rolls with black shiitake mushrooms which I liked but my wife didn’t as she felt it was too saucy. Another dish was the eggplant bowl which we all liked. Finally we also had the minced bean curd with noodles which I really liked. Overall a mixed bag and while my partner would give this a 3, I felt it deserved a 4. Service was good but she was quite busy.
I love the atmosphere of mama-papa place. I love the people and the concept. But the food we got, we didn't really liked. The taro fish has a strange taste and the imitation pork was also not well seasoned with soggy texture. I'm sorry to say so, but the expectations from this place were higher. Hope other people like it and they have customers. This place looks legendary in San Francisco. Good luck with everything.
As a vegetarian, it's nice to just go to a restaurant where I can order anything on the menu with no dietary restrictions. I found this spot from a simple Google search after being in the area and craving Chinese food. I was hoping for more options but like shui jiao or jiao zi but I just settled on the Lucky Creation Fried Rice. The waitress was friendly and the service was very fast. The food didn't blow me away but it was good. They also seem to have items available that aren't on the menu like bao zi. So it's worth inquiring about.
It's a small restaurant, but cozy & fun. We enjoyed all the food. I particularly loved the vegetable dumplings. Prices are reasonable & staff is nice. Will definitely come back next time we're in town.
The restaurant was really nice, with great ambiance and excellent service. However, there was one thing that bothered me. The waitress suggested a more expensive dish without telling me beforehand. When I tried the cream corn noodle soup, I found that the broth didn't have much flavor and there was way too much corn, which made it overpowering. On the bright side, they served a big portion, but it was so much that I couldn't finish it. But if you're looking for something different from the usual lemon chicken, I highly recommend trying their vegetarian lemon chicken. It's really delicious!

Once Lotus Garden closed waaaaay back in the 90s I started looking for a place that made the same sort of Taiwanese vegetarian "fake meat". Lucky Creation was that place. It's not nearly as good and doesn't have the variety that Lotus Garden did, but it's adequate. While I've eaten there, that's not why I go - I pick up the various fake meats, sold by the pound at the entrance. They're generally very good but you have to figure out which ones you like. They're also expensive.

We were looking forward to eating there since we are both vegans and visiting on a cruise ship. The entire experience was disappointing. The food was mediocre to say the least, service was fast but not friendly or welcoming. Prices are high which would be fine if the food was better. Total disappointment and would not recommend.
I had high hopes for Lucky Creation Vegetarian Restaurant, but it didn't quite live up to expectations. The place had an old, rundown vibe and didn’t look very clean, which was off-putting. The food was too greasy and didn't taste great. To make matters worse, the service was practically non-existent; we felt ignored the whole time. Sadly, I can't see myself going back or recommending it to others.
I’m not a fan of different-shaped, highly processed plant proteins already, and the restaurant made it even worse by serving some items lukewarm. The staff seemed a bit impatient with any questions: I was trying to confirm whether there were any dishes with animal products. (FYI, all of their menu items are vegan.) The hot and sour soup was mediocre and full of thickener, and the kung pao chick’n didn’t taste right at all. After eating there, I didn’t feel well. I will not be returning.

If bugs make it into your dish, the kitchen is swarming in dirt and bugs. This bug was found in my dish near the end of my meal. It is disgusting to find bugs in food, and is completely unacceptable. Not very vegan! I recommend to not come here under any circumstances, and to avoid this place. If there was a bug in my food, the chances of a bug in your food at the same restaurant is also high. Now doubting if the fake 'meat' is even vegan now too. Lucky creation turned into unlucky creation
