Today we went for lunch, it was our first meal at The Great Western and we weren't disappointed! We received a warm greeting as soon as we walked in, the service throughout our visit was very friendly and the food was outstanding. My husband had the fish and chips and I had the burger and both were excellent. For pudding we had the sticky toffee pudding and the bread and butter pudding and both were delicious. They have done such an amazing job bringing this once forgotten and run down pub back to life, you get such a warm and welcoming feeling and it's brilliant to see the little train going around the tracks in the pub as well. And an added bonus, you can buy sourdough bread from Corner Cottage Bakery in the pub.
Haven’t been to The Great Weston for 35 years, and today we returned for a lunch time meal, as soon as we stepped in we were welcomed with a friendly hello, shown to a table, and soon staff asked us what we’d like to eat and drink. A lovely atmosphere. I really enjoyed the haggis pie, and my husband said the fish and chips were scrumptious. 😋 had to wait for a little while but we were told that on arrival so our expectations were met. Loved the attention to detail with the decor. We will be back and won’t leave it so long. Lucy S
This place has recently been bought and refurbished. Food was fab, good flavours. Decent enough portions though one of our party, who requested no vegetables, would have preferred more chips with their pie. Priced for locally sourced products (to be commended👏), so some dishes a little more expensive. We went for a lunchtime meal, but equally you can just go for coffee, cake or a croissant. Range of dishes on menu for all sizes of appetites. Ambience is gorgeous. Warm, friendly setting with open fires, board games and the train that runs around the ceiling. Lots of seating indoors and outdoors (fab in the summer), though booking is definitely advised. Has a ramp to the lower level and toilets which makes it an accessible pub 👏👏 Nice ladies toilets - always a bonus in my eyes! Staff very pleasant and helpful.
I have visited the Great Western on numerous occasions now( at varying times of the day and days of the week!) and The staff are always very friendly and welcoming no matter how busy the pub may be. The food is always delicious and their ‘Specials’ menu offers variety on a weekly basis so I’ve never had the same meal twice. With its open fire, a wide variety of areas to sit and eat & drink, every visit feels warm, welcoming & unique, yet at the same time not unfamiliar. Hats off the team that has achieved a remarkable renovation that still acknowledges the buildings past. Keep an eye out for the train as it does its rounds above your head! Paul
My first visit and I can’t wait to return. The restaurant looks beautiful but I sat in the dog-friendly bar. Well kept pint of UBU, tasty and well-seasoned sausage and mash (kudos for the al dente veg), and the Sticky Toffee Pudding was DIVINE!! Visit made all the more enjoyable by friendly service from Maisie 👍
Delicious lunch in the newly refurbished pub. Staff were all friendly & smiley and there is a really relaxed atmosphere. Compliments to the team & chef, the pesto chicken dish was spot on! Looking forward to coming back with family & friends very soon! 🚂
The Great Western is a good lovely pub the staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was lovely and nice I had fish and chips and for puddings I had the chocolate brownie. Looking forward to going back again.
Excellent service and delicious fresh food. We visited for suspended model railway that runs throughout the bar/restaurant, but it currently isn’t running and they seemed unsure when it would be active again.
A lovely family Sunday lunch which was actually better than when we came a few weeks ago. Service was efficient and very friendly and my granddaughter absolutely loved the train. It’s so great to see your hard work paying off. Thank you.
Called in for a quick pint. What a beautiful pub. Lovely to see the little train passing over our heads. Food being served looked gorgeous. Next time, will definitely have food.
Bar staff were very well manard. Mazie our waitres was lkvely and she also new about the history of the pub in its past life. I will return when visiting family. Also made to feel very welcome 👍
Perfect service from start to finish. So glad to see this beautiful renovation filled with happy faces. Mixed breads, olives and garlic to start. Sausage and mash to follow... Sticky toffee pudding to finish perfectly made with love. Well done all 5 stars
Stopped in for a coffee at 11 this morning, lovely flat white prepared with almond milk, served at just the right temperature and very friendly, attentive staff. Decaf options available including decaf breakfast tea. Didn't eat today but there were tempting looking croissants and pastries with the offer to serve them warmed. Cosy log fires and comfortable seats. Would highly recommend for a coffee catch up with friends!
Excellent freshly cooked and very tasty food. Pleasant staff and a good selection of beers. Will definitely go again! And the train is great brings back memories of going there years ago
Came for dinner tonight, and the food was yummy! Everything apart from one dish was gluten free on the menu - which is a rarity. We had a very warm welcome, with happy smiley faces. And the pub itself, well I can’t believe the transformation in the space of time - what an incredible job you’ve all done - will be back!
The Great Western is a gorgeous pub with a lovely atmosphere and a big heart. It’s been lovingly restored and the space is now welcoming and warm with gorgeous attention to detail. There is a yummy menu and great wine list, all served by friendly and attentive staff….. we enjoyed a fab evening there and will definitely be returning. We’ll be back for Sunday lunch next time please x
We had a table booked today to celebrate a friend's birthday. We had heard great reviews and the Great Western certainly didn't disappoint. Great refurb and great atmosphere. A very warm welcome by all members of staff, followed by incredible food. We all ate a different main and each plate was delicious and clearly made with high quality produce. Decent portions too! I already have another reservation booked for an even larger group.
So glad this is our new local! We’ve eaten here twice - the first, a week after it opened and tonight. I have to say we are so happy with how it’s come on! We forgave a few teething problems the first time, but the speed of service has rapidly improved and the quality of food has been consistently high. We recommend the burger, chicken and pies. Only reason for 4 stars for food is that the desserts were a bit too big for us, but of course for others that isn’t going to be an issue. Our server was friendly and checked we were happy with everything and we didn’t have to wait ages for the bill at the end. We will keep coming back!
We visited for an early dinner on a Saturday afternoon - it was buzzing with a lovely atmosphere. The staff were all super friendly and attentive, and the food was excellent. Very happy to see this lovely building bought back to life and providing a great place to eat and drink for the community.
Visited this evening with my family to celebrate my daughter’s birthday. Really good evening-highlights were very professional staff, very good food, good selection of drinks, beautifully refurbished premises and of course the train. Great to see that all the hard work and investment has led to a great local pub. Look forward to visiting again soon.
Had a meal out here and they've done a fantastic job with the renovation! The food, drink and service were amazing, faultless infact! It's a pub/restaurant done properly with plenty of character and a party trick up it's sleeve, look up at the ceiling and you'll see! ❤️
Visited last Sunday when on way home from a day out. They were fully booked for Sunday lunch but still managed to find room for two of us. The food was very good and great service. Will definitely call in again if passing.
Staff were friendly and welcoming. The pub itself looks great, the hard work put in on the renovations shows. I had fish and chips, and the fish was beautiful cooked and excellent batter.
A group of six gentlemen interested in railways ate there yesterday and the general verdict was very positive. Food was tasty and well presented. Good choice of proper beer, including local Fosse Sisters Of Mercy - excellent. Service in all areas was great. Hope to be there again sometime soon.
Lovely pub with delicious food, friendly staff and whimsical decorations. The little train track running around the ceiling and other little railway details are wonderful additions. Would definitely come again.
Really lovely pub with a lovely vibe and lovely friendly staff. Enjoy trying something out of the ordinary And the bhaji starter and main course with pineapple sauce with my main course definitely were worth ordering. Drove from Coventry to visit here and intend to visit again to try a Sunday roast.
Absolutely fantastic. Staff, food and ambiance, just perfect. I took my 2 granddaughters who loved their chicken strips and burger, homemade soup and pie for myself, couldn't fault it. Well done to you all for getting this lovely pub back on the map, and to those negative people, slip ups happen, that's life.
Went with three friends all had a wonderful lunch great food, great service from a fairly young staff force, very happy atmosphere. The only thing wrong for me is I live in Kent and sadly only come this way about three time a year otherwise this would definitely be my local and go to place. Thank you Great Western for a lovely food experience.
After seeing this lovely building standing derelict and watching the renovation work going on for a few months we decided to go and try it out and I wasn’t disappointed, from entering the building to leaving it was amazing, the staff were all lovely and attentive , the food was amazing I had pie of the day and it was delicious. I will definitely be returning and bringing friends and family. Keep up the good work
So we live locally to this pub and have been several times for a drink as the atmosphere is cosy and friendly. We went for Sunday lunch after recommendation from friends and it was one of the best roast dinners I have eaten in a pub. I make a great roast dinner at home so always find it hard to find somewhere that lives up to my high standards especially when nowadays it's not cheap. The beef was cooked perfectly medium/rare ( in my opinion perfect) gorgeous fluffy/crispy roast potatoes and amazing homemade horseradish sauce. The service was friendly and attentive, gave 4 stars for service as the wait for food was about 45/50 min but it was well worth the wait!! Great selection of wine and also unique non alcoholic alternatives. Portion size was great and they did a smaller roast dinner for my 11 year old. This is a fab addition to our neighborhood and we will be regular customers. Heather F
We popped in for coffee last week and decided to come back for lunch today. Well, everything was splendid! The service was friendly and welcoming, the food was very good - my fish and chips were cooked just as I like it, and my wife enjoyed her burger! Puds were also yummy - sticky toffee pudding and bread & butter pudding, both superb. They have some local beer on so I tried a Fosse Way Brewery beer that I'd not tried before. They also have their own Combustion Coffee which is very good. You can even buy bread and pastries from the amazing Corner Cottage Bakery if there's any left! And of course there's the model train 🚂 running around the place - brilliant! Our visit was great, absolutely no issues whatsoever. We will happily return again soon. Oh and it's dog friendly 🤗 Highly recommended!
First time back in The Great Western since it reopened and we were not disappointed. Everywhere was really clean and the staff were super friendly and attentive....and what can I say about the food, it was incredible!! Both myself and my friend had the pie (steak and ale) and can honestly say it was the best pie I have ever had, super light pastry and crammed full of steak. I also had the lemon posset for pudding which was a delight! Kids has the burgers which they both enjoyed and of course, watching the train go round was a big hit too. I highly recommend this place and I can't wait to return.
Here’s a short, intelligent, punchy review based on your points: ⸻ Had a brilliant experience at the Great Western Pub in Deppers Bridge. Warm welcome, seated straight away, and the newly overhauled interior is stunning—calm, considered, and effortlessly relaxing. I dropped in between meetings looking for good coffee, natural light, steady Wi-Fi and a bit of background buzz, and it delivered on every front. The Operations Director even noticed I’d forgotten my Mac charger and loaned me one without hesitation—five-star service in action. I left impressed enough to return a few days later during a busier spell, and the service was just as sharp. A genuinely standout spot.
Absolutely fantastic pub. Everyone was so warm and friendly. I accidentally booked the wrong day and they couldn't have been more accommodating. It was very busy but they worked really hard to fit us in. The food was delicious, served in beautiful surroundings. I will definitely be going again and will be telling all my friends about this wonderful pub. Thank you to everyone for making it such a memorable experience.
First visit today to celebrate a birthday. We opted for the Christmas menu when booking. The food was very good but could have been hotter. That aside, the staff were delightful. So pleasant and helpful. The decor and ambience is fantastic. Lovely place with plenty of free parking.
Fantastic food, great service and atmosphere. We used to go here when I was yunger so its great to see it back, especially the train! The food was perfectly cooked and looked amazing, with something for everyone. Staff were helpful and friendly, the pub was clean and warm with a lovely rustic feel.
Second time this week visiting The Great Western! We came on Wednesday for a family lunch and came back today to try the Sunday roast — it didn’t disappoint. The food was great, staff super friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was really nice. Two of our friends are vegan and were really happy with the options — they loved their food too! Definitely recommend.
Really nice new pub, great to see it open. All in all a really nice place, friendly staff, food was served quickly and presented well. Chips were great. Some constructive feedback on improvements that could be made: 1. Get some curtains or soft furnishings - At lunchtime with most tables full, the echo in the room makes it hard to hear your own table. Some soft things on the walls like curtains should dampen that. 2. Drop your prices by about £2 per dish (mains and sandwiches) - They are higher than most restaurants in the middle of Leamington right now, so people will be less likely to keep returning after the initial inquisitive rush and Christmas rush if this isn't changed soon. Changing it later will be too late as people don't come back when they've moved on and you will be wondering why bookings are down. 3. Add at least one more veggie option to the lunch menu (currently just brie sandwich or chip butty). Also brie sandwich was a bit strange - toasted bread, but the brie was cold. It should either all be all cold (soft bread + cold brie) or be toasted with melted brie, so was kind of a mix of both which resulted in the impression that it was a stale sandwich instead of a toastie. 4. We didn't notice the ploughman's platter until we were leaving. It wasn't on the lunch (sandwich) menu, and we didn't look over the main menu because we were just wanting a lunch. So a missed sale there :)
It’s great to see the Gt Western back in the map and I’m delighted that we can have a well served and lively local here. The atmosphere is very nice, staff that served me were polite and smiley and the draught Napton cider is a big bonus I can see that a lot of care and attention has gone in to the vibe of the place , the little train is back 🙌 after a full refurb and refit The owners are also marketing the place as a WFP (great idea) as there’s a WiFi connection and tall tables and areas to have a coffee and cake (if you can afford it!) Which kind of leads me on to the small but important grumble! I had carrot cake. It was delicious but it was £7 a slice!!! I might be being a bit old fashioned, but if you want to encourage WFP customers… please reconsider what is a viable price for a nice slice of tray bake / cake. £7 is a bit in the Chelsea High St overpriced side I think. Good luck with the new venture 👍🏻
The renovation of the Great Western is a very welcome addition to this part of Warwickshire. Decor and seating/ tables in tune with the building. Lunch menu just right with many customers enjoying the pub and attentive staff service.
Came to check out the reopened Great Western for a late Sunday afternoon lunch. We had a table of 4 and we all had the roast beef. Overall the taste and quality was great and we all cleared our plates completely.. Only minor request would be for bigger and better yorkshire puddings (mine was tiny and rock hard) and some consistency on the thickness of the (single) roast beef slice per each plate. Two plates had rather thin cuts which left the recipients craving for more!! We all had desserts and the apple crumbles and sticky toffee were spot on. But the cheese plate was extremely dissapointing- We think the kitchen had ran out as all we got was a few scraps of "cheese rind" which was borderline inedible. We should have sent back. We even pointed it out to the waitress who said "yes, i had spotted the lack of cheese on your plate"..?? Then why give it to us??. But it was a small blot on an overall good meal and we will put it down to opening week teething problems.
Lexi the waitress was brilliant, she whizzed around the busy restaurant, very attentive and professional. That’s where our great experience ended I’m afraid. The food speed out of the kitchen was dire. The starters were delicious yet quite slow, the main course was well over an hour to follow, two of the mains (cod with couscous & the burger) were very dry and either overcooked or had been on the pass under the hot lamps waiting for the third main (sausage & mash) which was lovely. The crash from the kitchen 15 minutes before our food came out was suspicious. Disappointed as we brought my mum in law out for her birthday.
We were looking forward to the visiting the great Western pub. My partner had good childhood memories visiting there. When we arrived the car park was full, and the place was vibrate. As entering the pub, the staff was prompt ,and so welcoming. The pub didn't disappoint with its lovely atmosphere, and they had famous model train working. The staff was very prompt and so friendly, couldn't ask for better service. Looking at the menu it was very basic, but I I thought if done well it could be a winner. My son ordered the burger and chips, my daughter ordered gammon egg and chips, my partner ordered pie and chips. And myself ordered one of the specials cod with giant couscous. The food and drinks arrived in good time. Now comes the reson the star rating is in my opinion 3 not a 5. The food was hot, but the my dish was so bland, the real issue is the price £19 for the standard of the food/ taste. My son burger was standard, my partner pie was tasty, but he would of liked thicker gravy. My daughter did love her gammon with the lovely source on the side. The bill came to the best part or £100. With 2 house wines 1 Guinness 1 coke and 1 lemonade. Unfortunately we wouldn't return, we couldn't justify the price of the food and drinks, even though the service and atmosphere was lovely.
First time visiting The Great Western, after a family member had been and said it was lovely. The pub itself is beautiful and you can tell a lot has gone into making it look as nice as it does. Greeted with a smile and taken to our table, that was where the problems started. First, we were given the Sunday menus and told the specials menu was still being printed and we would be given them shortly…they didn’t arrive. Unfortunately, the soft drinks tap wasn’t working so we had to change up the order. Even after the pump was sorted, the drinks still tasted more of soda than the actual drink. Food, after ordering took far too long to arrive. Rustic bread with confit garlic, found in the “While you wait” section of the menu (comprising two small slices of granary and the same of white, only slightly warm, with half a cold head of garlic which definitely wasn’t confit, no matter how much oil was on it. Confit garlic should be able to spread, whereas, what we were served was solid). Why it took half an hour to warm up two bits of bread and heat up a bowl of tomato soup, I don’t know! Taste wise, the tomato and pesto soup was a hit, however the bread was more of a miss. Two tables arrived around an hour after we had and were still served before us, which I can only assume, was due to a lack in communication between the front of house and the kitchen staff. Having worked in restaurants and pubs myself, I know this is a big no no. Having said that, the mains arrived and were very nice. One scoop of ice cream for an infant also took far too long to arrive, by which point, said infant was too tired to eat it. The staff serving our table were attentive, albeit a little lacklustre when it came to thinking about what comes next or interpreting the customer’s needs.
Visited with a group of car enthusiasts - the pub opened up as a car breakfast meet venue. Nice newly refurbished pub, very tasteful decor inside. Staff very friendly. Ordered a coffee, and a veggie sausage cob - grossly disappointed. £3.20 for a small coffee (no size option available), and £6.50 for 2 cheap mushy vegetable sausages on a cheap cob! Was at least expecting meat substitute sausages (Quorn / McCartney / Richmond) at that price. Overheard others complaining that the bacon cobs were disappointing for the price. Shame, thought they would make more effort for this new venture.
I really love the story behind this pub and the fantastic hard work that has been put in to restoring it back to a beautiful venue. However, the menu is pretty uninspiring if you’re vegetarian. I used to love the veggie sausages with mash but for some reason this was discontinued, so disappointing. Even a veggie burger on the menu would be good ! Not sure how difficult it is to keep frozen sausages then cook as needed.
We went last night for a Birthday as a table of 8 (7 adults and 1 child) and arrived early at 5:30pm, we asked straight away for the kids meal to make sure she got fed quickly. Given the pre order we expected faster service but this wasn’t the case, it took 45 minutes for a single soup starter, then another long wait for the mains, we then had to chase the desserts. Ultimately for two courses it took 2 hours 15 minutes and we left early before the bill given our daughter. The place wasn’t very busy when we arrived. While the atmosphere was lovely, it was let down by the poor organisation and speed of service. The food quality also wasn’t good for the price, given it’s a fixed menu. I was very disappointed by something that cost a lot and didn’t deliver.
Initially the manager welcomed us. Bought the drinks & menus to the table. We were then forgotten and a couple arrived after us ordered 1st. They both rejected their meals as the mashed potatoes were cold, with the excuse that they'd be produced in the morning and hadn't been reheated adequately. For some reason they had removed the Ploughman's platter from the, less than week old menus, which we decided that we'd order on arrival. My wife had Brie & Cranberry sandwich, which was at least mediocre and I had an extremely bland, and tasteless fishcake. With a pint of shandy and a small lime & soda, we thought that £28.70 was a con. Won't be going back. It's a shame as we'd looked forwards to it reopening after so many years. The train became derailed and stopped while we were there. That says it all.
(Arrived at approx. 12:15, Friday 03/10) Approached bar and was told waiting staff would be sent over "in a moment" to take our order (12:20) Had to approach the bar again after waitress took an order from another couple who arrived a couple of minutes after we did. (12:25) Waitress came over. We asked how long on an order of sandwiches (as we were out on lunch from work), was told 15-20 mins. (12:45) No sign of our sandwiches. Couple arriving after us though received theirs. (12:55) Still no sign of our sandwiches. Partner has to chase up waiting staff to try and get an ETA. (13:10) Waiting staff never retured with an answer. Got up and told them we were leaving. A hangry return to work won't be productive! Will not return to The Great Western.. Terrible first impressions for a relatively new business. A shame, venue seemed nice.
Having watched the refurbishment from day one we were looking forward to a visit. Last night 7 of us (all local) booked a dinner. The pub looks amazing and we sat at our table with a drink at 7.15, we ordered and waited and waited. 1and half hours later still no food! Waitress very embarrassed said she would bring us some free bread and olives, 20 minutes later 4 pieces of bread and 6 olives arrive (between 7) when our meals finally arrived the food was terrible. 3 ordered steak, none were cooked as ordered, one was smaller than the burger, maximum of 10 chips, two cherry tomatoes, no veg, no salad. Two of us had fish, mushy peas were cold, l had sausage and mash, 3 small sausages, and a spoon full of cold mash, no veg! We were given 20% off bill due to wait, but the food was not worth waiting for, we won't be back!
