We went here for the whiskey selection but loved everything about the place. We started with the chicken skins and they were so good! I could have just ate those all night and been happy. My husband got the Asian whiskey flight and the waitress brings the bottles for you to see with the drams and gives a short explanation (much better than a lot of wineries/distilleries we visit). I ordered the Desert Flower cocktail which was just amazing! For dinner, I had the pasta dish and my husband ordered the pork chop. The pasta was delicious but the pork chop was out of this world! My husband also talked to the waitress about what he likes in a whiskey and put in some specific requests and a price point and she hit the mark with the one she brought back for him. We were just overall very pleased with our experience and will definitely return when we visit DC.
I had a great (albeit very short) visit in DC and stopped by Jack Rose Dining Saloon. The cocktails were excellent — especially if you enjoy whiskey — and their weekday happy hour is a great deal, including their appetizers. Overall, the service during my visit was fantastic and I’d highly recommend this spot 👌🏽 Update: There was an unfortunate billing issue after my visit, but management handled it kindly and resolved it quickly, which I greatly appreciated.
This isn’t just another overpriced New American restaurant! I didn’t come for the whisky selection per se, but the seasonal cocktail I got was one of my favorite cocktails ever. It was a pumpkin infused whisky drink that was incredibly spirit forward and not too sweet in any way. I also got one of the single barrel cocktails. The deviled eggs, tartare, and Mac and cheese balls were all wonderful appetizers. I got the pork chop as my main which might have been my favorite pork chop ever. My two friends really enjoyed their crab cakes, although they are small so maybe don’t order if you’re very hungry. The flash fried Brussels were great too!! Katie and Michael were both fantastic servers!
Jack Rose Dining Saloon is a fantastic spot. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about whiskey, the atmosphere is warm and cozy, and the service is outstanding. Highly recommended.
Amazing spot for drinks and dessert. Beautiful bar and setting for an elegant night out. Incredible bourbon and scotch selection that you just won't find anywhere else!
Great whiskey selection staff very knowledgeable on each whiskey. But they didn't have Southern Grace Distillery whiskey very disappointed. But staff was incredibly. Only this didn't like was food was not good at all. But can here for the whiskey and tasting and drinks not food.
“Jack Rose Dining Saloon is a true gem for food and whiskey lovers alike.” The ambiance strikes a perfect balance between upscale and cozy, with a stunning wall of rare whiskies and a warm, inviting dining space. The food is exceptional—creative yet comforting. The bone marrow, duck breast, and bourbon bread pudding were all standouts. Every dish felt thoughtfully prepared and beautifully presented. Service was professional and knowledgeable, especially when it came to whiskey recommendations. The staff made the experience smooth and memorable. Whether you’re a whiskey enthusiast or just after a memorable dinner in D.C., Jack Rose delivers on every level.
If you love whiskey, you have to go to Jack Rose when you're in DC. Amazing selection, and beautiful bar! I had to try the house single barrel flight, and it was delicious. The bartender was very friendly and informative at first so I was very surprised when the bartender didn't ask me what I thought, or even which one I liked better. Highly recommend, will return
My boyfriend and I traveled to DC for Jack Roses extensive bourbon selection for his birthday. We had an awesome time. The food was amazing. The selection of bourbon was great. The best part about it was the bartenders. They are incredibly knowledgeable and really go out of their way to make sure you’re having the experience you want.
I absolutely love this place! If you're relatively new to whiskey (like me) and you don't really know what you like yet, go to Jack Rose. If you've been drinking whiskey for some time and you're looking for something new, come to Jack Rose. If you're a whiskey connoisseur and you just want a dram of something you can't find locally, come to Jack Rose. The great thing about Jack Rose is that you can customize your own flight(s)! I've been able to avoid SO many bad purchases by sanpling them here first. I've also come across a few surprises that ended up on my home bar, LOL. That said, the food is good and the service is great. I always order a bite to eat before I dive into the whiskey flight selection. And I always end up meeting a new fellow enthusiast while sitting at the bar. If you've never been to Jack Rose Dining Saloon, you should get there immediately!
Great service, great food and great whiskey if not a bit expensive
This place is fantastic and the whiskey selection is unmatched across the entire country. The barrel picks are standard setting as well. If you have a chance to grab a bottle or two in addition to your meal you'll be quite happy. They also have semi regular events, tastings, and more. Parking is a tad rough but with a short walk you'll be fine.
Had an absolute lovely time! The food was on point and the staff was super friendly from the get go. We were celebrating our anniversary and they were very accommodating. We had the seared tuna and a very tasty beet salad. The fry cake dessert was scrumptious. Of course you go for the bourbon and they didn't disappoint. Some stuff we were looking for were out, but Matt was able to suggest similar bourbons that were awesome! If you want to have a great time and try hard to find bourbon, stop by!
Amazing food! Great drinks! Super knowledgeable and attentive staff
Don’t snooze on going to the basement while you are waiting for a table, they have a great collection available for sale. If you’ve heard of it, they have it available for a drink. A far superior bourbon bar to any other I’ve seen.
Jack Rose is a must-visit for whiskey enthusiasts in the Washington DC area. Despite some initial option paralysis, navigating the mobile menu and searching “Jack Rose” under the whiskey section reveals affordable specialty picks. What sets this place apart is the unique experience – when you order whiskey, they leave you with the bottle, allowing you to savor and enjoy the pour. Adam, a helpful and friendly staff member, guided a (my gf)whiskey newcomer to intriguing options. Also arriving around 7:00 PM, post the after-work rush, provides a more relaxed atmosphere. Overall, a fantastic experience worth repeating.
Every time I'm in DC I find an excuse to come here. The food is excellent but this is the best Bourbon bar in America for variety, with pretty decent prices as well. It's hands down my favorite bar. The rooftop is cool and open while the saloon area is dark and cozy. The staff is extremely knowledgeable about bourbon and the bartenders are amazing. You must go here if you enjoy bourbon.
Perfect place for Whisky or Whiskey aficionado. They have exclusive and rare bottles on the menu. I would suggest first timers to look at the menu in advance because it has a selection of approximately 3,000 different bottles. The atmosphere and food is great, the service is very good but it can get a bit slow on busy days.
Sometimes, when you go somewhere and have a good experience, the second visit isn't as great. But, my second visit to Jack Rose was SO DANG GOOD!!! The food was delicious and the drinks were amazing. We went downstairs to the cellar and bought one of their rare bourbons to take home!! We chatted with the owner for an hour and he was wonderfully pleasant and knowledgeable. What a memorable experience!!
The sheer volume of whiskeys is only slightly less impressive than the incredible knowledge of the whiskey sommeliers that work here. Recommendations and information were eagerly given, with thorough explanations every time. Everyone was very attentive and quite helpful. I would recommend this to all who enjoy a tasty drink.
Awesome experience, really enjoyed chatting with the whiskey expert. The olives, shishito peppers, calamari, and scallops were delicious. Very big alcohol menu! Make sure to give your waiter/waitress some background info on what you like to help them better pick something out for you.
Holy grail and Best place in Washington DC/America to explore the world of Whisky, Bourbon, Scotch & all type of liquor with mouth watering snacks. Name any drink around the globe they get it for you.
Fantastic atmosphere and service! Our waiter gave great recommendations. It reminds me of a library, just with alcohol. lol. It’s pricey, but worth it, and the appetizers were yummy. Such a fun night out!
The Whiskey/Bourbon and Scotch list is 80+ pages.... Spirits from here to Japan and Beyond.
If you find yourself looking for an amazing whiskey, rye, bourbon, or craft cocktail experience while wandering in Washington DC, look no further. This location has an amazing selection of various spirits, some dating back to the prohibition era. Some items offered are not available in the States or are no longer made. Yes, you may pay up for your experience, but you definitely are getting what you pay for. I highly suggest trying a flight of spirits. There are flights mentioned on the menu. However, the mixologists working here can put a flight together for you to satisfy the experience you're looking to have. The mixologists here are very knowledgeable with the various spirits in stock and can provide you with a little history about the spirit of your selection. The food items offered on the menu are very delicious and provide a little soakage to further enjoy the various spirits on hand. This location has a good feel, very knowledgeable and awesome staff, an amazing selection of spirits and good food! What more could you ask for? Definitely stop in. This spot does not disappoint.
The best whiskey bar in DC hands down. Super knowledgeable staff, picks for any palette, and great vibe. Highly recommend a stop here for the novice whiskey drinker to the bourbon conossuier.
Such a beautiful bar and atmosphere. The decor is amazing, and it is very spacious inside. The happy hour specials are fantastic. Highly recommend the whiskey sour’s, loaded baked potatoes, and fried Mac n cheese. The staff is very friendly and service is excellent.
Update, 6/28/24 – enjoyed another top quality experience here with a friend, we both had a whiskey expertly curated by the bartender. The selection of whiskey were excellent, and the food divine. Enjoyed 2 whiskey flights and dinner before seeing Hamilton at the Kennedy Center nearby. The flights were expertly curated, and the food was delectable! I had the Halibut, which was expertly cooked and was tasty and juicy. My friend had the rabbit ragu that had great texture and was also tasty. Came here again after the show for cocktails and they were well balanced and delicious! Chris, the whiskey advisor, was great and led us to some tasty choices.
This place is great! Bartenders in the first floor are SUPER knowledgeable. I recommend that you ask them for recommendations. They love finding the right drink for you. Whiskey is my drink and they helped me refine my palette and vocabulary when talking to whiskey heads. Beyond the free education, it's also got a sweet vibe and decor. Downstairs is more what I expect from a whisky bar. Upstairs is more of a sports bar vibe Either way, this is a great DC staple.
Make reservations! Expensive but worth it. The food was really good (not great). The whiskey selection is literally #3 best in the world, so concentrate on trying obscure ones and not your grocery store variety. A perfect location for a date (plus the popsicle place around the corner). Eat dinner on the ground floor, then head upstairs for drinks in the multi-section seating. The speak easy downstairs is closed, but they opened a second location a few buildings over that specializes in the cocktails that they are known for.
Hard to believe that a bourbon bar can be exemplary in quality of pour and service from the kitchen. Follow the advice of the server and the visit is memorable.
Jack Rose offers an endless variety of whiskeys and bourbons. I honestly recommend letting the bartenders know what you like, including geographic distillery locations and if you prefer single or double malt and let them do the rest. I love the unique and exquisite options and the presentation is second to none. I highly recommend visiting Jack Rose if you are looking for a gentleman's watering hole.
I am not even a grade 2 in whiskies but a place that has more than 3000 bottles of them is somewhere you must see. The appetizers were really well made and generous. The entree was delicious and cooked to the perfection.
What an Amazing Whiskey Collection!! We had a night out of drinks here with our friend who was visiting us and we absolutely loved the place and the collection of whiskeys and bourbon and so many other stuff! The bar tenders are so friendly and knowledgeable about everything! I said I love fruity cocktails with either Gin or Vodka and instant cocktails were created! Must visit in DC
Over 2600 different Whiskies in their inventory. Great selection of rare whiskey. Great cocktails, service and food. This was a busket list bar for me. Itcwas the worth the trip.
With an amazing enormous variety of whiskeys in the main library bar on the ground floor, and three other bars upstairs with their own separate rotating cocktail menus, you'll find it hard not to catch a buzz here. Food is wonderful and it can get really crowded on the weekends as the spaces seems to be made for large groups. I can't wait to come back here again.
one of my favorite whiskey bars. in spite of the huge deep collection of whiskeys, some incredibly rare, this place has no pretension. the staff is incredibly knowledgeable and is there to share…no brow beating if all you want is a cocktail…but if you ask, they will go deep and converse. the room is warm and inviting. sit at the bar and listen in on the banter and advice. the food is pretty good, too.
Went here on a sat evening around 11pm. They close the kitchen by 11pm. So did not get to taste their food. We got chairs at the bar. They have a very good collection of Whiskey's. The bar tender was very knowledgeable and the service was quick. We tried two Tasting Flights, 1. Diversity of Japan (smooth and fruity) 2. Shades of Peat - More on the very dry side. We also tried the Hibiki 17 and Oban 18. The latter was much smooth than Hibiki. I would highly recommend this place if you are into Whiskey's. I am definitely going here again. The decor of the place is also elegant.
Went here on a busy Friday night and was VERY impressed. Despite being busy, service was excellent! Speedy, no glass was ever left empty. AMAZING atmosphere - so much whiskey on the wall, I wanted to try everything!! Tried 3 bourbons, they didn’t have their JR Blanton’s, but that was fine. Server actually helped me with a third single barrel recommendation since they didn’t have that one and I was very impressed. I’ll be back! Oh and I also had the housemade pork rinds - A-MA-ZING!! Who would’ve thought you can even present pork rinds to look great!! Most places would’ve just thrown them in a bowl and gave it to you, not JR. Presentation was great and they tasted even better!
The food isn’t bad but their whiskey selection if phenomenal! The servers are really nice and for a place that is usually crowded they are very attentive. I’ve been a few times and the experience is consistent.
While visiting D.C. we had an excellent experience at Jack Rose Dining Saloon. A close friend that used to live in the D.C. area suggested we have a meal here since he knew we appreciated fine bourbons. The staff were very professional and knowledgeable, while still being friendly. The service was excellent, with little wait for placing our order and the meal was prepared and delivered quite fast. We had the Spring Salad and added the Blackened Grilled Chicken. The salad was very fresh and included oak lettuce, asparagus, english peas, radish, feta, spiced sunflower brittle, with a delightful herb vinaigrette. The salad was very filling and is highly recommended. We also had the English Pea Risotto which came with a healthy portion and was perfectly prepared. Both are highly recommended. The restaurant decor has the perfect vibe. It has a somewhat speakeasy feel to it, but also has just the right of modern touches to make the space very attractive and yet comfortable. The woodwork, the exposed brick, high ceiling, and even the tables add to the attractive decor. The walls, yes multiple walls, of floor to ceiling bottles are what make the space truly impressive. The space is cozy and time spent here is quite enjoyable. The bourbon and whiskey selection is simply amazing! It is almost overwhelming with the variety of rare bourbons that they have available for pours. Highly recommended to stop here if you want to enjoy a hard-to-find bourbon or even for a great meal.
Jack Rose Dining Saloon is an absolute must-visit for any bourbon lover. Hands down, the best bourbon selection I’ve ever seen—it’s not just extensive, it’s curated, thoughtful, and clearly built by people who genuinely care about whiskey. You could spend hours exploring their list and still not scratch the surface. The service was outstanding—knowledgeable, friendly, and genuinely enthusiastic without being pretentious. The staff made great recommendations and elevated the whole experience. The food? It was fine, but honestly, I didn’t come here for the food—and that’s not a knock. Jack Rose is about the whiskey, the atmosphere, and the experience, and on those fronts it absolutely delivers. If bourbon is your passion, Jack Rose is a bucket-list destination. I’ll be back—many times.
Jack Rose Dining Saloon is such a cool spot for whiskey lovers and anyone who enjoys a cozy, rustic atmosphere. The selection of whiskeys is seriously impressive—there’s something for everyone, from beginners to connoisseurs. I loved how the bartenders took the time to recommend drinks based on my taste preferences. The food pairs really well with the drinks. I tried the pretzel with beer cheese dip and the pork belly—both were delicious and perfectly seasoned. The ambiance is warm and inviting, with beautiful wood accents and a relaxed vibe that makes it easy to settle in for the evening. Service was friendly and knowledgeable, though it got a bit busy, so things moved a little slower than usual. Overall, Jack Rose is a fantastic spot for a night out with friends or a casual date. I’ll definitely be back to try more from their extensive whiskey menu!
If you love, or even like Whiskey (Whisky), this is a bucket list experience. Not only do they have the largest selection in the Western Hemisphere, the staff is top notch and very knowledgeable. If you’re there on a night when Chris is working, you’ll be blown away by his wisdom, service and kindness. Can’t say enough good things about this place…oh, and the food is also great!
A must for whisk(e)y lovers visiting DC. This is the Library of Congress for whisky. Exceptional selection and friendly staff make this a fun place to try out new drams. We found a table on a Thursday evening! You can spend as much as you want here because they have it all, including normally unobtainable whiskies that aren't widely available as bottles. (Over two visits we tried Springbank Amontillado Cask & Local Barley, Cadenheads Campbeltown Enigma, plus Dailuane and Ledaig Independent Bottlings.) But you can enjoy without breaking the bank by looking at their $10 drams. The bartenders have good knowledge of their library - set your price and state your preference for a recommendation or check out their zillion-page menu, which includes scotch, bourbon, rye, and world whisk(e)y from Ireland, Wales, England, India, and the USA. SMWS (Scotch Malt Whisky Society) members will find a selecting of their bottlings here. Don't be put off by the offer of ice, you can get a water dropper but you have to ask. More in the way of education could be offered here. It might require more staff but it might be fun for many patrons to have a built-in learning experience (maybe online guides to types, regions, and flavors).
Jack Rose is a D.C. institution. It's in Adams Morgan and comes with plenty of seating and an impressive whiskey selection. On top of that, they have lots of cocktail options. For my birthday, my wife got us a small private room on the second floor with our own bar. It was beautiful and more quiet compared to the main space. It was the perfect place to end my birthday weekend.
Jack Rose is primarily a whiskey bar. Most people come here because they either are genuinely a high-end whiskey connoisseur with lots of money to blow, or they want other people to think they're a high-end whiskey connoisseur with lots of money to blow. Aside from that, the fried chicken skins are one of my favorite guilty pleasures - and the only reason I come here. All of the food is good, but it is also overpriced. The attached pictures below show their $29 scallops entree (3 scallops on polenta grits), $11 roasted olives, and $9 chicken skins. While there is nothing offensive or inappropriate here, it would be in very poor taste to bring children.
This is a very popular place I could tell from the crowd that was in the restaurant even after the kitchen had closed. We had the "Jack Rose Barrel Picks" flight, the "Time in a Bottle" cocktail, whiskey Wings and fries. The whiskey selection in the flight was great, the cocktail and the wings were good as well, however, the fries were not seasoned or salted at all. Service was good but the host could have done better. He just stood there without greeting or anything so we were not sure if he was part of the staff. Upon asking if he worked there, he said he did after which we asked for a table and he led us to one. :/ Parking can be a hassle as the restaurant is in the heart of DC. There is street parking but finding a spot is up to luck.
You definitely go here for the atmosphere. None of the food was as good as cheaper food in Chicago, but they had a lot of non alcoholic drinks, which were nice for someone like me. I tried the Rosé and it was tasty. I also tried the scallops. I can make better at home and not spend ten dollars a scallop, so that was disappointing. Lastly, I ordered the mac and cheese. The format was fun, but the taste was not comparable to good old home style Mac. I'd say, go for the drinks and atmosphere, eat somewhere else.
I LOVE a whiskey bar vibe! I had really high hopes for this place - a pdf of 82 pages detailing all their whiskey??? Yes please!! We're my expectations too high? Maybe. My drink was good - an interesting experience but not something I'd ever order again. But the biggest reason I'm rating low was the noise! It was so loud in there! Not quite the whiskey bar vibes I was expecting when this place was recommended.
