The Unthank Arms

Been in a few time over the years and always been a great pub, local but friendly! More recently I have been enjoying the Mon/Tues offer off pasta and a drink (wine for me please) for £12. Now, you're not going to walk away stuffed, but thats not the point. (You can walk away stuffed if you order off the normal menu). I've never been disappointed by this offer. The flavours vary all the time, there's a meat or veggie option, and it's always lush! I've been stung for £12 for a large wune before, so i believe this is great value and even greater quality. It's a real kitchen, they're making this and that's what makes the difference. The front of house/bar wench's are also really friendly and professional (sorry wench's I mean no offence 😀😃). So, yeah, give this place a go. Great pub, great staff, great food, and a really good £12 offer.

We had a lovely work Christmas do here. We booked for 12 of us and one cancelled on the day. They were so accommodating. The choices were incredible. The food portions were great value for money. Drinks were reasonable. Small car park but some parking around the area but very limited. Staff were friendly.

We had our wedding reception at the Unthank Arms and it was wonderful. We cannot speak highly enough of the pub as a venue and the whole team. Throughout the planning, Ben and Adam were incredibly helpful, efficient and communicated really well. It made the whole process so much easier and we really appreciated it. On the day, the whole team working were amazing. They were friendly and welcoming; all our guests were praising how relaxed and fun the atmosphere was, which is exactly what we had hoped for. They made sure everything ran smoothly, checking in regularly and helping us make decisions in the moment (like when the rain started and the speeches had to move inside!). And this is all before we mention just what a beautiful location it is to have a celebration! Can highly recommend for anyone who wants a pub wedding; the Unthank provided the perfect celebration.

First visit to this pub, we were having a works Christmas meal. Located in a private function room upstairs with it's own bar. Food was very good and service quick and friendly.

We hired the venue for a small, intimate wedding reception last week. The food, staffing and venue were all incredible, and everyone in attendance has said they have plans to go back there to eat in the future. Totally faultless and contribute to our amazing day. Thank you!

We had our wedding reception at the Unthank Arms recently. The staff worked very hard to make us feel comfortable. The food - absolutely amazing! All our guests enjoyed it! The manager was very accommodating and helped us sort everything. They decorated the room for us, we only dropped the decorations off the night before and they did a fantastic job! I would definitely recommend!

Been here a few times and always had a nice time. Good little pub to have a drink and a catch up. Always friendly and welcoming.

Just wanted to say a huge thank you from the Cowtower dippers 30 of us came last night for our Christmas meal the food, atmosphere and service was outstanding. Thank you.

Wonderful place for a celebration or just a pint. We were a party of 12, who wanted to decorate and have lots of fun. It was the perfect place. The staff were so kind and accommodating. So many pubs are falling down on that, the Unthank was exceptional. Nice menu choices, cocktails and wine list. Would highly recommend. Thank you!

The food here is really good except the carrot cake, we thought it was too hard and dry….

Great Sunday Roast. The trio was absolutely huge, and unfinishable, but all really tasty. Nice atmosphere and attentive staff.

The place was amazing. To be honest I did not have any clue it existed before. The food was absolutely delicious. The portion was really good as well. The only thing I will suggest is that the place is a bit pricey or overpriced. If they can serve things for a bit affordable prices then it would be much busier and popular.

Family sunday lunch. Excellent roast meals and pleasant atmosphere.

A fabulous community pub/restaurant with a pub feel and restaurant quality food.

Top notch Sunday roast, excellent vibe and competent service. A great first impression. My old man was particularly impressed with the tempura ice cream. He wasn’t hungry but he just had to see it. An alternative craft cider is the only way it could improve for me drinks wise and the children’s burgers were a little too chargrilled and chips a little too salty for kids unfortunately but they ate around it and had there fill.

Very nice food with excellent portion sizes in a very nice pub.

The food was only really pub grub, nothing special, but friendly, attentive staff (plenty of them too) & a pleasant venue. Reasonably priced soft drinks for drivers too - £1 for a soda & lime. Conversely, The York down the road charged 3x as much for the exact same drink - which is really just taking the piss.

Attended a friend's 60th birthday. Service, food and atmosphere were brilliant

I had my birthday party here in the function room. The staff were all fantastic. I did a pub quiz for my friends and Adam on the bar helped me switch between various devices to play music as required. Ben was also great, communicated well throughout the process. Everyone enjoyed the food. I'd fully recommend the Unthank Arms if you're looking for somewhere to host a party.

Decided to pop in for a sunday roast, we had pork and chicken, which both were served hot with plenty of veg and gravy to go with it. Staff were all friendly and service was prompt. Food was good

I had the fish in green curry and it was fine, but not great. Other food was ok too - apparently the chicken burger was a bit dry but the loaded fries with steak were good. Staff were super helpful however.

The roast dinner was fantastic! The only thing that let it down was the chicken, it was tasteless, no seasoning or herbs on it which was disappointing! But apart from that it was fantastic, the people who had the beef said it was fantastic! Good portion sizes too! Went again and had the pork and it was delightful!! Really good roast!

Good food in a cosy Victorian pub. Pasta nights on Monday and Tuesday where you get choice of bowl of pasta and a glass of wine for £10. Popular place, so advisable to book in advance on the website.

2nd time here in two weeks, so good the first time we came back a week later. They do a meal deal on a Monday night a bowl of pasta and a glass of wine for £12. Excellent value with the size of the bowl of pasta. The deserts were sublime. The garlic bread was £5 extra, but enough to share between 2. Unfortunately this time I had gnocchi, the other three had spaghetti, and they forgot mine so I had to sit and wait, then when it turned up it was a lot bigger portion than everyone else, so it took a while to eat, and then the second last mouthful had something gritty in it, possibly egg shell, but it felt bigger and thicker than that, so I left the last few, but by then I was already getting full. The lemon tart with raspberry sorbet was very good. Last week they had a roaring log fire going and we thought it was maybe a bit too warm, this week the fire was still glowing when we arrived at 6, but it slowly went out and two different people asked if they could put more logs on and we were told they were not filling it back up, so it gradually got colder, and when we left the fire was out and it was getting on the uncomfy side of cold. Despite any little niggles I'd quite happily come here again. Adnams low alcohol ghostship ~£5, Pasta meal deal £12, garlic bread £5, desert £8.50. Total ~£30.

Food at weekends is now provided by a local Italian restaurant, Al Dente. See pic for menu. Expensive for pasta in a pub setting, but I must admit it was very good. Thought charging £1.50 to have cheese on top was very cheeky, but thankfully they forgot to put it on the bill. Recent revamp of the pub is tastefully done, but part of me yearns for it to return to it's former role as a community pub with good, cheap, interesting food that attracted local pensioners as well as others

I had the vegetarian roast which was really nice, it had 5 different veg a Yorkshire pudding and some really good roast potatoes and a nutroast which was a little stodgy for me, all the puddings looked delicious too

We had a great works Christmas do upstairs. Well looked after.

The Unthank Arms is located at 149 Newmarket St, Norwich. The outlook of this restaurant is quite attractive. The seating area is comfortable and feeling warm with real fireplace on Ground Floor. Variety of food is limited, mainly burger is offered. Pumpkin soup is too salty, lacking smell of pumpkin. In fact, it is a bar, most of the customers drink beer.

Service not with a smile. Had Christmas lunch and the girl looked the least impressed I've ever seen. The food was mediocre, soup starter was more like baby food, roast potatoes were tough and chewy, one of them the fork wouldn't even go through. Measly veg. Anemic pig in floppy blanket. Sausage stuffing that looked more like spam. Christmas pudding was chewy, I don't know how, but it was a struggle to cut through it. Table was nicely decorated at least.

We dropped in for some food on a Sunday late afternoon. My husband had the roast beef and I had the whipped Goats cheese crostini. My dish was tasty but lacking something, maybe a drizzle of balsamic vinegar would have elevated it, where as my husband's roast, at £20, was very lacking! Beef was ok, nice large Yorkshire pudding, but the veg - or extreme lack of it - and all 2 of the roast potatoes, were very disappointing. Not sure what was going on here as no one checked back on us. As locals we have had such mixed experiences here with food so rarely come any more, and we'll definitely be going elsewhere for a roast!

Lovely pub with a great atmosphere and decor, and the staff were nice. The roast dinners were just really underwhelming. The potatoes were tough, the gravy was watery and thin and the veg was unseasoned. My nut roast tasted like nothing and my partner's Yorkshire pudding was burnt. He did say his pork and chicken were well cooked but the beef wasn't great. I've never gone for a roast and left hungry. We actually went home and made our own roast for dinner! With the roasts on offer in Norwich, they really need to up their game I'm afraid. I would come back for drinks though.

Average at best Sunday roast. Pre made Yorkshire pudding ! I mean really. Beef so tough we had to request steak knifes. We did tell staff who were apologetic and said it would hopefully be better next time. Who are they kidding, slim to no chances of next time!
