We went to bouboran dinner. It was very good.
This restaurant really deserves a visit. I got the bison meat loaf and my wife got the fish. We opted for the vegetable sides which were fresh and delicious. Food was so good and was hot and fresh. Quality ingredients and the serving sizes were impressive. Not to mention the deserts. Brownie Sunday and shortcake were on another level. Regardless of what you’re in the mood for you will not be disappointed. 10/10 - special thanks to Sam the waiter.
My family has enjoyed going to this restaurant for four generations that I am certain of. If my great-grandfather were the one who first took my grandfather to it, that would make five!! The historical decor cannot be adequately appreciated by reading mere words of a review. Upon first entering, you feel history all around you. It even has the scent of welcoming and dependable establishment. The food is terrific and very reasonably priced. I very often get their SCROD as I've never found it better elsewhere. But their prime rib or lobster casserole is calling me! Although I grew up nearby, I moved to IL in 1975 for school and never got a chance to move back to Massachusetts. However, whenever I'm back visiting family, it's always on my list of "must-do re-dos!!" Enjoy!!
Wonderful historical venue. Interesting view thru a drop in time, nice displays of furniture and information. Creamy "comfort" food. Slightly uncomfortable seating, but apropro 😉. Service always friendly and attentive.
Great lunch! Food was delicious. We sat in dining room and there was a fire in fireplace. Waitress was great. One person had a dairy allergy and she checked with kitchen on this order. Not our first time here. All rooms are cozy and fabulous. Staff are all very welcoming.
Delicious food and a very historic atmosphere as you would expect yet 5 star dinning with plenty of room for large groups
Did not stay over. Had dinner with friends. Filet minion was perfect.
I went for a bridal shower. We had two rooms upstairs that were just beautiful. The food was good. The staff was great and the whole event was lovely
What a treasured piece of history! The buildings and grounds make you feel like you took a step back in time. So many different dining areas, rooms to stay and absolutely delicious food! The Yankee Pot roast had such a terrific flavor, the clam chowder, burger, chicken fingers and fries were also good and the rolls and cornbread were divine. The service was top notch and our every need was met. Would love to come back in the summer to see the gardens! So glad places like this were saved from development. The Chapel and Grist mill were added in the 1900's by Henry Ford, but seem to just fit in with the area and help give a glimpse of a time long gone. Would 100% recommend this Inn!
Don't miss the ambiance of this place! The staff were really friendly in telling stories about this remarkable treasure. Thank you!
Good food, good and powerful drinks, good service! Beautiful surroundings! Tons of colonial charm! You can almost imagine how it would feel if you were a colonial coming in for a drink and some food! We looked around, had some lunch, and visited the grist mill! We didn't have a room so it was just a day trip! Thoroughly enjoyed the visit!
I have dined here many times over many years, the food is always very good, but yesterday was exceptional. I ordered the baked scallops and they were the best I have ever had in my 69 years on this planet. Very flavorful and perfectly cooked, tender and delicious. Very good and friendly service just added to the experience. The chocolate mousse dessert was also excellent. The early colonial ambiance is fun, too. Can't recommend this place too strongly. Go!
Exceptional experience, from the picturesque grounds, to the timeless charm and serene beauty. Felt like stepping back in time, with its private spaces, rich wooden accents, antique furnishings, and cozy fireplaces. Every corner exudes elegance , history and warmth. The staff deserves high praise for their genuine hospitality and attentiveness. The dining experience was nothing short of extraordinary. The ambiance is inviting, and the food is outstanding and expertly crafted. And don’t forget to stop into the pub for an inviting step back in time and engaging conversations and drinks! This inn surpassed all expectations and is an absolute delight!
Every visit to the Wayside Inn is magical. The history is palpable, the buildings are classic, and the scenery is a masterpiece. We've given out 500 piece puzzles made from photos of the infamous Grist Mill to many family members. My wife & I lived near the other end of Dutton Road for 5 years until 1992. We loved the history of the area and brought every visitor to see the Inn, Grist Mill, and Chapel! Stonewalls were a constant talking point with our visitors, along with "which house did Babe Ruth own?!" The Night before Patriots Day: We made our reservation the moment April opened up! We wanted to enjoy as much of this 250th Celebtration as possible, and that included the Wayside Inn. We asked for the Old Kitchen room, but unfortunately it was taken by a family party... we still made our way in to take it all in. Our friends and their families were from the Detroit area, and many had worked for and retired from Ford. The Old Kitchen was where Henry Ford would entertain his guests when he owned the property. We loved spending time with the past Colonels of the Sudbury Militia who gathered this evening - our dear friend, Ron McInnis, was colonel in 1988. They graciously allowed us to use Ron's mug for a beverage as we mingled with the past colonels. What an honor! Our meal was nice and the service was fine, except when I didn't like the taste of a glass cabernet, and I was asked by our server if I "had ever had a glass of it before?" EXCUSE ME!!! Quite shocking. Her attention to us after that was pretty minimal... But, we did encounter Dr. Prescott soon after to discuss his busy weekend full of historic moments [and soon his ride to warn the colonists that "the Regulars are coming!"], which returned us to the reason we were staying in West Concord for 5 days, and our friends from Michigan were here for 11 days! Incredible American Revolutionary History!
In August of 2022 my wife and I celebrated our 48th wedding anniversary at the Wayside Inn. They offer a package deal of a night at the Inn, dinner, and breakfast. Our meals were excellent, well prepared, and delicious. The wait staff are very good, being attentive without hovering. They are also courteous and friendly. Our room was very nicely appointed and the bed was very comfortable, as well as stately and appearance, being a four poster with a canopy. We were in the original section of the Inn; they do have a more modern wing. The Wayside Inn itself is a fascinating place with a long history going back to colonial days. Although it was not known as the Wayside Inn when Longfellow visited there, he used it as the basis of his book of poetic Tales, Tales from a Wayside Inn. We will be back again!
This beautiful destination was the PERFECT venue for my Husband and I to get married at. If I could give a million stars I would and they deserve each and every one of them. The Longfellow Wayside Inn's character and charm speaks for itself once you step foot onto this property. All of our guest could not stop raving about their experience and how they will be back because they could not soak enough in during our wedding day. Alongside the beautiful venue, the people that work at this property go above and beyond. There is not a single thing I would change that they did, they were on top of everything...and I mean everything. I never had a single doubt and the team executed the day seamlessly, it was beyond impressive and my guest even commented on the proficiency and kindness of the staff. I was constantly checked on throughout the night that I was able to get appetizers, drinks, food, anything at all. I cannot mention enough how pleasant it was to have such a great team creating this special day. And the FOOD--oh my lord do they know what they are doing!!! I was full at cocktail hour, as were a good chunk of my guest and then the actual dinner spread itself was mouth watering good. If you aren't getting married you at least need to take yourself on a date to go enjoy some of their cuisine. And if you are getting married you HAVE to ask for the chef's special meatballs as part of your night! To the entire staff: I cannot thank you enough, I will forever replay the night in my head that you seamlessly ran as the best night of my life and no amount of thank you will ever cover how thankful my husband and I are.
very nice location! a kind man taught me how to play vinefera's song and symphony of horses for only 100 silver! would recommend!
Went to this wonderful place for lunch. I haven't been there for 50 years. Just missed lunch but we were directed to the pub by the sweetest person at the front desk. My friend and I were met by Chris the bartender and server. Chris made our experience unbelievable. We sat by the fireplace and ate delicious appetizers and had a beer or three for more than 3 hours. Chris was so accommodating and the nicest guy. He packed up our leftovers and was so kind. Honestly this was a perfect moment in time. As we get old, things mean so much more. The Wayside Inn is amazing, but a staff like Chris made it a heartfelt memory. ♥️
A favorite of the family for decades as we're originally from Sudbury. Beautiful and quaint inside and out. The food is always excellent, especially the prime rib!
We went there for the restaurant and the food was great. Friendly service and warm atmosphere.
This review is about dining at the Wayside Inn: We absolutely adore dining at the Wayside Inn. We love the setting, the traditions and the hospitality. The food is consistently prepared perfectly to order with guests allowed to make substitutions to accommodate dietary needs. The entire staff amazing. In particular, Marina who has looked after us for years, is fantastic. She always remembers what you like. For example, when she serves us the basket of house made rolls, she always remembers that my husband does not use butter and immediately brings him a dish of olive oil.
I believe I’ve already reviewed this spot, but after such a great meal and experience, I had to leave another! Once again, it felt like stepping back in time—beautiful ambiance, plenty of character, and excellent food and drinks. Our server tonight, Matt, was top-notch. Despite a busy night, he had a warm and personable attitude, making us feel truly welcome. He also shared a fascinating history of the inn, which made me eager to return again soon.
Lovely place to eat for any special occasion. If you love history and classic New England charm, you have to visit!! They offer a variety of foods. I highly recommend the meatloaf and butternut squash. On Wednesday nights in the summer they have a reenactment band come through which is delightful. The grounds themselves are lovely. Make sure to take a stroll through the garden and to the lake. There is also the grist mill, chapel and schoolhouse to check out before or after your meal. Overall, the food and atmosphere are great!
Very friendly people when you ask questions they'd answer them very professional everything was delicious
My mom and I had lunch at the Inn today. It was the best lunch we've had in decades! Neither of us are spring chickens. The beef was cooked to perfection with the most delicious fruit cup to accompany the meal. The waitress even offered to box our food. The ambiance was superb and the staff top notch. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Here for an event. Good food, delicious, staff friendly, cozy atmosphere
My husband and I went here today to both celebrate his mental health and our anniversary, we missed the chance last year due to my grandfather's medical issues and the passing of both my grandmother and my husband's grandmother (Mine: 12/18/2024; His 1/13/2025). Longfellow's is a time-capsule in the future of chaos; life feels like it slows down when your here, and although we haven't rented a room as of yet; We can tell you that the lunches are very delicious as they look like they have been made from scratch; the coffee was one of the best coffee's I have had as it definitely appeared as if it was brewed on a fireplace and had a smoky wooden taste that brings you back to the 1700s. Prices were very fair for the experience and the excellent service that you get from the waitstaff; Susan is a very dear and courteous front desk staff member, and while I don't personally have the names of everyone we encountered, my husband and I felt warm and welcomed and they even provided us a cupcake in celebration of our anniversary. $100 for 2 people is certainly a steal when you think of what you truly get out of your time here. As was explained to me $220 gives you overnight stay with breakfast for (2 people) not many places give you a place where the halls are echoing with the memories and ours was just one of the many. We plan on coming here more often and perhaps rene our vows when the money, time and country gets back to a feasible opportunity. I would highly recommend the Boston Baked Shrod and the Crunchy Brussel Sprouts (the portion is large enough to share with your special someone) were truly a delectable choice and take it from my husband the Yankee Pot Roast was the best he had in the entire state. Remember: All proceeds from the meals and time there go towards preserving this piece of history.
the food is amazing. i love the pulled pork shepherds pie.
We look forward to visiting Longfellow Inn from out of state at least once a year. The food is delicious. The Inn is historic and charming. Staff is friendly and welcoming. One time we visited there happened to be a colonial reenactment that day. So we could sit in the tavern and enjoy our meal with guests in colonial garb.
NEW 'Chef Jeffrey' at the Wayside Inn is bringing his modern culinary expertise to classic American cuisine. The Longfellow’s chicken pot pie, house brewed beer, roast duckling and filet mignon are remarkable; encouraging repeat visits. Being the oldest continually operating inn in the United States (1716), it still creates a comfortable dining experience in the heritage setting. The service is welcoming and attentive. Our server, Marina, is outstanding and greatly contributes to the delightful casual dining experience.
The food was amazing and the staff was awesome. Of course, the history is appreciated.
Went for dinner last Saturday night and the food was terrible. The steak was ordered "rare" and it was over cooked. The waitress was disturbed to have to bring it back to the kitchen. The replacement steak was not much better. The green beans were canned green beans and the mashed potatoes were cold. My bill was $225.00 for 5 people and it was he worst food we ever had. Thank you for allowing me to express my opinion. You need to do better, improve the food and improve the service
Longfellow’s Wayside Inn will always hold a special place in my heart and my family’s history. When my grandmother first moved to Massachusetts, she and her children stayed at the Inn. Over the years, it became a tradition for my mother to take us back to experience the fife and drum performances that brought the history of the place to life. Some of my earliest and fondest memories are tied to those visits, standing outside with my family, taking in the music and the sense of heritage that filled the air. Years later, when we gathered to celebrate my grandmother’s life, Longfellow’s Wayside Inn once again provided a home for our family. They hosted her funeral reception with warmth, respect, and an attention to detail that meant more to us than words could ever express. Beyond the personal memories, the Inn itself is a treasure. Every corner breathes history—from the creaking floors to the timeless atmosphere. Whether you’re visiting for a meal, a stay, or a special event, Longfellow’s Wayside Inn offers something truly rare: a living connection to the past and a space where memories are made.
I've lived in the area my whole life, and I can't believe I never visited this historic venue before. It was great—we called ahead for a reservation, and they were able to accommodate us sort of last minute. We were excited for dinner! Overall everything was great: table service, meals, and atmosphere were wonderful. I'm not super picky about my food if I'm getting traditional Yankee cuisine (I was raised on it), so I was pleased with the meal. It was comfort food to the max. Would definitely recommend, just don't expect fancy cutting edge dishes, it's traditional home style cooking.
me and my kids came true to be a garden and we absolutely had an amazing time. We had the pleasure of having a bartender name Michael Carly, who is that great need of our service not only did he serve me fresh cold beer and my wife, some wine, but he was very attentive with my children Talking to them trying to have conversations and also given them snacks. The prices are very reasonable and I definitely recommend that he works the weekends because he told me he doesn’t work Saturdays right now, but I come every Friday and Saturday and I absolutely love him.
Perfect for history buffs. We arrived during a celebration by Revolutionary War re-enactors. Continentals and Red Coats mingling in the dining room. Very cool!
This message is to Margorie (our server) and Management: I cannot thank you enough for a fantastic and memorable night on 04/05/2025. We had my Mom's 80th birthday party in The Longfellow Parlor Room. There were 11 of us. What a beautiful room! Decorated so beautifully but not crowded w/ furniture so we were able to mingle around during drinks before dinner. Margorie, our server was so sweet. She had a big smile each time she walked in the room and didn't rush us through dinner. She is a gem and I hope Management knows what a special lady she is. Our food was fantastic, tasty and fresh. Everyone had whatever they wanted on the menu such as scallops, salads, onion soup, pot pie, shrimp, chicken and beef. The portions were plenty and the sides very New England. Some of our guests hadn't been there before and was so thrilled to have this new experience. This was such a memorable evening and it couldn't have gone any smoother if it wasn't for Margorie and The Wayside Inn! Thank you!
My friend & I went for lunch Thursday. Reservation made for 12:30. Wayside Inn. I hadn't been for many years ! Seated straightaway. They ordered turkey dinner w/ mashed & squash & I ordered the Sherried shrimp dish w/ green beans & mashed. Delish! Our waitress, Loretta was awesome! Went to New City Creamery down the road for an ice cream. Yummy! 😋
Ate in the restaurant for a late Mother's Day lunch this Saturday and the food was amazing. We arrived just after they opened and there was no wait, still early so we had the dining room almost to ourselves for a little while then it filled up. The food was amazing so was the atmosphere and service. My mom and I both had the apple and beet salad with Salmon and Dad had the Turkey Cranberry club and clam chowder. It was all wonderful.
We had a family dinner in the Innkeepers Room. Caitlyn, Leeann, Micheal, Amanda were all welcoming and friendly. The room, the food and the service exceeded our expectations.
Classic colonial New England Inn. Our visit was only to the bar, a small historic room with fireplace, beamed ceilings, and a handful of tables. Drink menu features several historic beverages. Bar menu was also nice - could easily make a nice meal with a cheese board, shrimp cocktail, and several other options. You need to go to the bar to order - but service was fast.
We had a delicious dinner at the Wayside Inn restaurant. My favorite dish was the roast duck and the basket of small muffins and rolls. For desserts, the strawberry shortcake and apple pie were yummy. Thomas was our nice waiter. I had been coming here for the past 20+ years and nothing to complain about.
Absolutely lovely!! This gorgeous piece of American history is a delight! Built in 1760 s. Service was great attentive but not intrusive We had a small room for the 10 of us and it was definitely worth it. The fireplace was warm and comfortable on that cold Sunday afternoon the candles ( battery operated) were charming in the windows and at the fireplace The food was delicious from appetizers to desert… scallops were sweet and tender. The pot roast yummy. My son in law loved the turkey dinner. Of course the kids menu was full of kids meals. The gift shop had a few unique items that I put into the adults Christmas stockings We also took pictures at the grist mill and took everyone to the candy store @ Fords general store. All in all a wonderful afternoon
I went for lunch with a friend of mine.... We each had a couple of drinks which were made perfectly, and the lunch we ordered was excellent! The staff were very helpful and our waitress did a great job. It's too bad it's so far at the drive for us because we'd love to go back a lot more often. We didn't stay in the hotel part though we just had lunch.
We were 24 folks for a Christmas party for our club. The food, their famous roast beef top notch. The room is long-ish and not that wide so it's very difficult for the servers. In spite of that, they did a great job.
The Wayside Inn never disappoints! The Staff is terrific! Food is always amazing! A few favorites are the Thanksgiving panini sandwich at lunch and the prime rib at dinner. Our favorite rooms to dine have the fireplaces. Love the history! The grounds are always a delight to walk around. Seeing the Gristmill, Martha Mary Church & Mary Had a little Lamb s Schoolhouse!
The Wayside Inn is a historic inn in Sudbury, Massachusetts, United States, included on the National Register of Historic Places as part of the listed Wayside Inn Historic District. It became an inn called Howe's Tavern in 1716, making it one of the oldest continuously operating inns in the United States. Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (first American to completely translate Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy and was one of the fireside poets from New England) visited the Inn in 1862, probably where it got its name ( I think but not sure). If you love history of America this is one of the places to make a quick stop. They also accommodate vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and other special diets and also offer a hotel to stay overnight.
Attended a wedding here and the venue was excellent. The chapel did a great job of maintaining the 1700s feel while clearly being updated. The cocktail hour and reception/dinner where held elsewhere on the grounds and again were set up very well and the staff was very attentive and helpful.
A beautiful site for afternoon adventures. I was there for a Fife and Drum Muster, including Corps and Bands from around the Northeast. The scenery is quaint New England at its finest. Enjoy the beer tent for, well, beer and also pretzels. There are your typical tchotchkes at the store, asking with apples and apple products. Nothing to shy away from and lots of fun to be had!
The restaurant is like stepping back into time. I returned to my home state and have not been to Wayside Inn for 20 years and it exceeded my expectations on the food, the atmosphere, the history and just a great lunch time experience. I built this place up to my family and what a testament to the staff and management that it's still great. The food is so good, our server was so personable. Hopefully Wayside will never change. I highly recommend you experience this gem in Sudbury, Mass.
Keep in mind this is a historic hotel. If you are looking for modern this is not your place. If you want retro with convenience may be. But you are someone that appreciates history, and likes to immerse as if you where back in that era then this is your place. I will be writing a letter to the management of my great experience and I will include names of staff in that communication. In the mean time, what I can say is do not wait and just make your reservation. You will want to go back. Enjoy, relax and make new memories.
Everything was wonderful! The food was very good as was the service! Special thanks to the awesome concierge who helped my husband who is 87 get into the car safely on this cold, icy night!

Enjoyed a Mother’s Day brunch at Wayside. The food was delicious. Had clam chowder, prime rib and banana cream pie as well as oysters and scallops wrapped in bacon for appetizers. My sister got the filet and lobster bisque and she enjoyed hers as well. The apple pie tasted like it had too much nutmeg but the other desserts were good (crème brûlée, strawberry shortcake). The service was very slow which is why I gave 4 stars but it was very busy because it was Mother’s Day. We were seated in one of the back rooms and it was very loud so at times it was difficult to hear each other. Cosmopolitan was delicious. There were people in period costumes greeting at the front door which was a nice touch. Overall very enjoyable lunch and would return in the future.
Visited on the day after Christmas. Place was very busy but they did not seem to be utilizing every table due to staffing. This worked in our benefit for having a small dining room to ourselves. We were a party of 8, and the only other tables in the room were 4 seats each and went unused. Overall it was very nice. The place gets an 11 on a scale of 10 for atmosphere and ambience. The food was OK. Most at the table agreed that it was pretty standard with several of us being very underwhelmed. (Fish&Chips and Prime Rib). The sides were all very good. We did struggle to keep water glasses full and get beverages (stafffing?) and the wait for food was longer than usual. We have come here probably 60 times in the past 2 decades so we have a good baseline to to work from. There was a large party seated in the next room so that may have had an impact on our wait and service. We will visit again at a less "festive" time and see if this was a outlier or if it persists.
The food was very good. We reserved a private room for our party, and we loved the antique building. But it came with the temperature issues you'd expect in a colonial building; it got very warm towards the end of our meal. Our room was an alternate access to the next private dining room. It didn't bother us, but we would have appreciated a head's up when we booked the party. The wait staff was stellar.
Just went to the restaurant. Food was delicious but nothing crazy. Service was good. Not a fast paced environment. Brought my 2 1/2 year old and it was a mistake. Staff was kind enough but after about an hour my child started to lose his patience. The location itself is what makes it. Looking around transports you back to another time.
Great dinner in a perfect family setting. Service was eh, but courteous
This review is about the restaurant only. This was our first visit since moving to Marlborough. We made reservations for noon on a Sunday. The parking lot was plowed and sanded, yet still a little slippery. You are allowed to drop off guests at the walkway to the entrance, which was nicely clean. We were seated across from the kitchen entrance, next to a closed off door. There was a slight draft, but the heat was on and the temperature was good. The positives: Our waitress was Marina, who was extremely pleasant, polite, and always had a smile. (It was also her birthday). She made sure to get our table set up with rolls and butter (we would like to suggest that you add a small dish of jam or honey if you serve the corn muffins as it just adds a nice touch). The drinks were served hot and delicious (we feel that $6 for a 6 oz of hot cider is a tad expensive since you can buy a gallon for less than that.) The coffee was excellent and did not need additives of sugar or creamer to make it taste better, in my opinion. The calamari was perfect and didn't have that overly greasy feel or taste. The amount was perfect and was very worthwhile. The schrod was perfectly cooked as was the butternut squash and bake potato. My daughter had the roasted duck with green beans and everything was cooked well and served hot. The lobster bisque was creamy and perfectly seasoned for me (I don't like things too salty where you can't actually taste anything but the salt). We ended our meal with the Indian pudding for dessert - a first for us - and found it interesting. I am not certain we would have it again, but it was flavorful and fun to try once. The negatives: Due to our position in the room we were in, we were witness to several "outbursts" by the staff that made the outing less than perfect. One waitress told a waiter that he would need to get his own bar glasses due to what the bartender told her (which she used an unflattering mimic of their conversation) and he was a bit snarky in his reply. Then, a group of four who were seated in Sally's area, left to view a few of the rooms after ordering drinks. She came to give them the drinks and found their table empty and made a big production of how rude it was for someone to take them on a tour. She was not pleasant about it to the hostess and complained quite loudly. The group did apologize and she said it was all fine - but I don't believe that is what she really thought. You can request to be seated in a specific room, however it may not be accommodated. It would depend on the number of people, time of day, etc. Reservations are suggested, based on how busy it got and the quality of the food.
Went for dinner Charming classic New England Inn I reserved a table and got one by one of the fire places gas- :-( There is a real fireplace in the bar! Dinner for two brussel sprouts were delicious app the lobster bisque not so much thin watery Scallops and baked potato were fabulous prime rib was Fred Flintstone big and appreciated Chocolate pecan bourbon pie was great but not served warm? Get the multi course meal save yourself a little bit of money did not stay at hotel/inn great service from Joe

The atmosphere is fantastic, but it does not make up for expensive food which was mediocre and the service was slow. I ordered a $125 bottle of wine and it came out warm, not even room temperature…
This review is for the restaurant ONLY and it breaks my heart to have to provide a bad review how the Wayside Inn. We have been coming to the Wayside Inn for literally ever. My parents as well as my husband and I celebrated our marriage at the Wayside inn. Before I get lengthy I am going to bullet. For those who like to keep it quick and simple. 1. Deeply dirty carpets 2. Dirty glasses 3. Filthy restrooms (build up of scum, slime and mildew on the sinks) 4. Hair in stuffing 5. Inattentive waitresses Last evening we thought it wild be a treat to celebrate my new job by having dinner at our favorite special spot. We sat in the main dining room. The first thing I noticed were the carpets. They were beyond dirty and smelly. It looks like they had not been cleaned in quite some time. I don’t remember this from our anniversary dinner last fall. The rest room was dirty. Not just a little out of sorts from a days use, but filthy. There was literal scum build up on the sink faucets and around the perimeter of the sink. It would take weeks of not correctly satanizing to get to this level. Our water cups were dirty on the outside because the gentleman who was bussing the tables was the same one who pours your water and he had very dirty hands. One of our meals had hair in the stuffing (it happens but is still gross). The server was inattentive but polite. She told us at the very beginning of our dining experience that our muffins were warming up. We asked about them 20 minutes later she told us they were taking a while. When she finally brought them out they were cold. She never checked on our appetizers or meals. One of the cooks walked by and corrected the issue with our stuffing. I have slowly noticed the dining facilities decline and it is super sad. I hope they do something to correct it soon! I would hate for this beautiful historically rich Inn to close their doors.
I have always loved this place and so when it came time for our company to have a small gathering for dinner I naturally recommended Wayside Inn. So disappointing... We were jammed into a back room directly over a heating vent. We were told to put a menu over it if it got to hot. Our waitress was less than pleasant and had absolutely no personality. When we asked for her opinion on the food it was a lack lustre response of we make it here it is all good. She never came back and asked if we wanted additional drinks. My food was awesome but others were not happy. the mixed vegetables were over cooked and dry. the potatoes au gratin where tasteless and the bread pudding was bland. Everyone thought that the food was just average. Because we were hidden in the back area it was dark and uninviting. Everyone left disappointed and said that the meal and service wasn't worth the price they paid. I felt embarrassed that I suggested the Wayside Inn which normally has great service and food.
this review is for the restaurant well i was expecting a better experience....have not been here in years...a lovely place with lovely grounds and a lovely antique building and some museum area and walking trails, service was pleasant BUT well, i ordered a vodka gimlet, awful......we ordered the calamari, it was not calamari at all, mostly chilis and onion pieces fried up together...my other had the reuben, she thought it was very good, i had the chicken sandwich, interesting but the chicken was tough and rather flavorless.....sooooo, not a good experience at all...disappointing!!!
This place did not live up to the hype. While it's a charming location and lovely inside, and the service was very good, the food was just not deserving of the praise I'd been hearing from others. The clam chowder was excellent and the potatoes that came with my meal were great, but the rest of it was decidedly average. If you go here, you are going for the experience of eating at a historic inn, not for the food itself. Not something I'd recommend unless you are really into location-based dining.
I was disappointed sadly. We had to send back the prime rib as it was on the colder side when served. Mg duck was overfried and hard to cut I ate half and left it. The waitress was not happy overall that we sent back the prime rib so I didn’t dare say anything else about the problem with my duck.
My family likes to heat at the Wayside Inn because of the atmosphere, but recently I am not happy going there because I am a vegetarian and have not found their options for vegetarians to be very satisfying. The Vegan Risotto Cakes were not very tasty or good. I think they should come up with a better dish for vegans and vegetarians. And the Vegetarian Potato Gnocchi would be fine for a side dish but to eat a whole meal of them gets really boring! The two above options have been on the menu for a long time. The veggie ravioli they used to have was better. Or they could have manicotti or stuffed shells for vegetarians. I suggest some warm grain bowl--with quinoa, veggies and maybe veggie "meat balls" and some nice sauce on it. Please take those two current options off the menu and come up with something more interesting and delicious. THANK YOU!
I would really want to give them a 4, but some of their dishes and their desserts just aren’t that good and the service is always extremely slow or lacking when they are busy. Prime ribs and steak are always great, and their bread are also good. They do claim their flour are from their own mill but I saw bags of flour they use are from a different place with the name and location printed on them. The have 20 something rooms and they are on the smaller side.
The service was good, my husband’s prime rib was good. I had chicken pot pie which was terrible. The gravy and chicken had no taste. It looked like chicken and vegetables thrown in a dish with a pastry puff on top. The mashed potatoes and squash were good. We ate there a few years ago and was excellent. What happened?
Yikes. Sooooo tired. The carpets should have been replaced 7 years ago. Food is average. Service was great. Ambiance isn't enough.

Stopped in for dinner a couple weeks back, on a bit of a lark while we were in the area. A generally pleasant facility but the dinner was remarkable blah. Not necessarily bad ... just not well done. The "shrimp casserole" was merely shrimp, swimming in fat & breadcrumbs, doused in a heavy pour of sherry ... which tasted heavily of alcohol. As in, the alcohol didn't burn off during the cooking process. The butternut squash was simply pureed squash -- no seasoning, spices or herbs whatsoever. It's like the kitchen didn't even try. But what made it worse was our server, Silvana, who, after she realized we were not consuming alcohol, became very brusque, dismissive and condescending. The other servers we interacted with were very pleasant; Silvana, not so much. In fact, we hurried up and left as soon as we were done eating to escape the cloud of negativity she brought every time she came to table. Worth going to once, but not going back there ....
Very disappointed in the dining experience. The drink was wrong, soup luke warm, and chicken was dry with no flavor. The only good part is my parents enjoyed the atmosphere. Should have sent everything back, except the dessert.
The service was terrible on thanksgiving. Our waitress was not impressive. Janice needs a motivational training session.
Many a good time has been shared at the Wayside over the years, with the exceptional food and atmosphere. It has been the site of birthday celebrations, anniversaries and Mother’s Day dinners. I’m not sure if there has been a change in the management, but the service has really taken a turn for the worst. Would be happy to share other details with management.
This hotel is great and most of the staff are spectacular but I had a negative interaction with a female staff that was flat out not friendly. I tried to book a room online and because of the front desk’s communication delay in booking the room someone else booked the room. I was told I could book two room instead of the one I wanted because of this. She tried to quote laws as to why I couldn’t book one room (accommodating my family). I questioned her about this because I felt she was being dishonest and she started to deflect, talk over me and tried to prevent me from speaking. Also being politely disingenuous in her responses to my frustration about the situation. Very unfortunate to have a conversation like that and kind a put a downer on my family’s plans. At no point did she try to work with me to fix their mistake, it was a do you want the room or not attitude.
Have long wanted to experience this historic restaurant, and finally went for our 30th anniversary (Oct 2025). The grounds are amazing and the history even better. That said, the meal itself was terrible, and ridiculously expensive ($45 for a steak). We were seated in a large, in need of updating dining room with only one other couple, yet there was notable food on the floor at the table where we were seated, in spite of ample employees walking around the lobby area. Glad we went, would not recommend for a meal.
Lovely historic inn with a resistant always somewhere I like to bring guest from out of town. I made reservations so we would be sure to have a seat and service Monday. We were sat and served promptly but food took over an hour and a half to be served. Mine was cold so I sent it back and my guests prime rib was also cool and very fatty. If a restaurant cannot serve 30 people they shouldn’t seat 90. Poor experience. Zero compensation for and $80 lunch. Don’t see how I go back again.
We went to the restaurant with friends mid week. Now, I have been going to the Wayside Inn for over 50 years and it has always been a very special place. This visit was not so special, unfortunately. The food has become average. The prime rib was good, but not top-notch as it used to be. The lobster casserole was good but not the tender, succulent lobster of years before. The rest of the meal was just average. I really hate to leave such a negative review but the food was, frankly, a major disappointment. On the positive side, the service was excellent! Waitress was great!

We went for mother’s day 2024 at lunch. We took a reservation weeks in advance as it was high on my wife’s list to have mother’s day lunch there. When we arrived we’ve been greeted by people dressed in colonial style and got shown our table quickly. The place was full but almost no one had food on the table except for bread baskets. We waited at every step of the way. We were expecting some delay as it’s a busy day, but we sat at our table at noon and didn’t get a bread basket before 1pm… when we asked for it. We waited another 1h15 before getting the main course. On one hand, they served frozen vegetables that were still cold and had no seasoning (and tasted like forgotten bag of frozen veggies). Mac and cheese was warm at best and looked and tasted like kraft dinner. On the other hand, the lobster was so overcooked that it turned into rubber! Scallops didn’t came much better. We walked out of there after a solid 3h waiting. We were not alone as about every table around us expressed frustration. Clearly something went really wrong that day…
Can I give. Zero star? Long, long long wait last night for cold food. A wrecked birthday dinner for my wife.
This review is for the dining experience only. Went tonight with my family. Had asked when booking for one of the old rooms and that request was honoured. Table was not prepped. We were missing napkins, bread plates, condiments etc. Waiter forgot to bring my drink for a very long time. Service was appallingly slow. Husband ordered chicken pot pie, which was served without the crust!!!! My husband asked why this dish was considered a pie if there was no pastry. The server had just not noticed that this pie was in fact not with its lid! Clearly this pie is just heated up and then the top put on. Not how I would make a pie. One of our group is vegetarian, and the options are scant. The vegan risotto was hard and overcooked in places. No-one really enjoyed their dish. The pot 'pie' was taken off the bill and an apology made, but my husband didn't reorder bc everything took wayyyyy too long. The party at the table adjacent were dropping f bombs galore, just what you need when out with a young daughter. Not the restaurant's fault on that one, but a crappy night. The waiter didn't bother to offer coffee and dessert. He got that right! We couldn't wait to leave and we won't be back ever!
We were excited to be back, and celebrate birthdays w family from out of town. Sadly we were disappointed. The staff is so friendly and welcoming. The cheese and crackers and bread basket was different than I had years before. And I was excited to get the Sunday dinner special “Turkey dinner” it was not hot when it came out. My family had the leg of lamb which was overdone and also cold. We also got dessert, I was excited about the apple pie and he ordered the Indian pudding. Again lack luster, not so tasty and overly molasses flavor. Sadly my out of town family felt the same. The dining room was empty when our food came out so I’m not sure why our food was cold. Not sure we will return. Too bad beautiful grounds and such history there.
Don’t be fooled by food pix. The cuisine is the worst. Diner food is better. Thrown on plate with barely a spoonful of sides, all cold and unappealing and tasting like we just got robbed! So extremely disappointing; especially when you bring folks who had never been to share this historic site. And, then ordered full meals …dishes that were cold, tasteless(unless you love salt) and unappetizing. The only other rip-off are their prices which add insult to injury. Final words: don’t bother!!!
We’ve dined here before and have always enjoyed the food, but our experience this weekend was incredibly disappointing due to how a tipping situation was handled. At the end of our meal, our server approached our table and stated, “The tip isn’t included in the price.” My father-in-law responded that he was aware and had left one. The server then looked at the receipt, stormed off, and within earshot of our table said, “It’s usually double that, this is embarrassing.” Regardless of what someone believes an appropriate tip should be, publicly shaming guests is unprofessional and uncomfortable. It created an awkward and unnecessary scene that completely changed the tone of our visit and unfortunately ruined what was meant to be a relaxing Sunday meal with family. We understand that servers rely on tips, and we always aim to be fair and respectful. However, respect should go both ways. We hope management addresses how situations like this are handled in the future
My family and I went to the bar and ordered egg rolls the day after Thanksgiving. I had glass in my egg roll that chipped my tooth. I got compensated for a few drinks for my extended family, but now I have to have dental work done. Even though they don't make the egg rolls, as the manager said, I don't feel like that was a proper response to something that could have caused internal bleeding or worse.
The wayside inn failed to deliver on every front. The abysmal service, combined with the revolting quality of the food that took 2 hours to be served, makes this establishment one to avoid at all costs!! Save your time, money, and taste buds. Dine anywhere else, as there is absolutely nothing worse than this place.
Went to the wayside for a nice dinner for my mother’s birthday since she loves historic sites. The experience was very typical as we have eaten there a few times, however this whole experience was tainted by our waiter at the end of the dinner when they began to act passive aggressive about the tip that was left. Just felt like something that should have been cried about in a private space instead in front of my mother and our party on her birthday. That sort of temper tantrum is revolting and really changed my opinion of the establishment. Either pay the wait staff a livable wage, or to set expectations to them before they take the job that tipping is a gift and not a requirement so don’t expect perfect tip percentages every time you wait on a table.
I used to come here all the time for family events. And each time I come back the experience is worse and worse. It legitimately makes me very sad. This restaurant was my favorite place to go for years, from literally the age of 5. The most recent visit, sadly my last, brought my fiancée for the first time. I had talked it up and was incredibly excited to show him this restaurant as I had such fond memories of this place. Unfortunately, it was incredibly disappointing. The servers were doing the best they could but they were super understaffed. Also, we had a large party[8 people] and were not told until we ordered that we would not have side options. It was only mashed potatoes or squash since we had a larger party. This was very disappointing as the price was the same and a few people in our party were diabetic and on diets and did not want to order mashed potatoes and squash. The servers were very kind and were truly trying their best, but the food was cold by the time we got it. Rip, this place used to be a solid place for special occasions. I honestly hope this place can turn around for the better. It would be a shame to lose such a Massachusetts classic.
