Opinions de Casa Rio Bonham
We wanted to eat along the Riverwalk. This place looked festive and has a long history so we chose it. I had the regular plate( chili, cheese enchilada, pork tamale, rice & beans and thought it was excellent. My wife had chicken flauta plate and liked it as well. Service was great and it is a very nice setting along a channel looking down another.
I had an absolutely amazing dinner at Casa Rio! This place deserves more than 5 stars. I ordered the Deluxe Dinner and it was spectacular—everything from the cheese enchilada to the tamale and the chili con carne was incredibly flavorful and authentic. The Watermelon Agua Fresca was the most refreshing drink I've ever had, and finishing the meal with the Sopapillas (hot, fluffy, and sweet with honey) was the perfect ending. If you are on the River Walk, you MUST eat here. The history of the place makes it even more special!
Casa Rio was extremely busy when we visited—on Friday evening, right after Christmas, with heavy tourist traffic and schools being out. We were originally waiting for a River Walk boat ride, but the line stretched to the street and would’ve been a 2+ hour wait, so we decided to dine instead. This was our second visit, and the main reason we chose to come to the River Walk despite knowing it was peak season. Casa Rio quoted an approximately one-hour wait, but we received our text within 35–40 minutes, which was appreciated, given the crowds. The service was professional and respectful, and the food arrived quickly once we were seated. I had tacos and enjoyed them. The flavors felt closer to the authentic Mexican food we were used to back in California, which has been harder to find locally, and is why we’d return again.
Best restaurant on the river walk, hands down. The wait was decent on a holiday (~15min). Our server was so kind & prompt - every item came out on a respectable interval, given how busy the restaurant was. And there was just so much food. The guac was so fresh. Salsa was so good. Everything was great. I will definitely come back on my next visit.
Casa Rio continues to deliver amazing food for decades. It was so amazing. Our server was such a sweet and kind person. The weather was a little chilly so we ate inside. The band would stop by to see if you would like to hear a song. Overall, I highly recommend this location if you are near the river in San Antonio.
Great Mexican restaurant. Prices are very good considering it's location on the river walk. I had a special called the deluxe plate, it was very good. The chili con carne was a pleasant surprise. Our server Alva provided excellent service. The margaritas are great. The salsa with the chips and salsa is some of the best I have had.
I wish I had discovered this place sooner. This is my last night in San Antonio and I would have eaten here every day for at least lunch or dinner if I had known about it. They have amazing food, for a big city in a touristy area they have great prices, and the best atmosphere in the mainland! I walked by this place right after lunch and made the correct decision to eat here for dinner 🍽️ I think most of a bad reviews of this place are from competitors. About 77% of their 1 star reviews are from locals (San Antonio) claiming to be from out of town. They also mostly mention the same buzz words. A few of them even have pictures of a different restaurant 🤦🏽♂️
Dinner at Casa Rio is a total must! It’s a right of passage to eat at a cheesy Tex Mex spot right on the water! It’s basically the Riverwalk’s grandparent. I played chef and ordered a shrimp bowl with rice and cheese (highly recommend) and, because this is San Antonio, we hired a mariachi band to serenade us right at the table. And absolutely, it made the meal taste even better. Service was almost too fast! I was enjoying my time!
We decided to get a margarita here and we weren’t sure if we wanted to eat. The hostess Rebecca was also our waitress and she was very friendly and quick. They offered a flight of margarita’s which we decided to try. I highly recommend this. They have quite a show delivering it on a lit up airplane. The margaritas were good and it was a great way to try different flavors. We also ate off the appetizer menu and got the trio which included chips, queso, guacamole and salsa. It was very good and we couldn’t eat it all. We really enjoyed the food and drinks. We didn’t pick up our phones because we were busy talking about the different flavors of the food and drink.
Decent Mexican restaurant on the riverwalk. We got the queso and chips and beef tacos with rice and bean side's. The queso was more like velveeta than traditional queso, it did have a good flavor. The chips were good, light and crispy. The tacos were not that good, the meat was barely seasoned and the taco shells were very thick corn shells which were ok at best. The beans had a good flavor but they were skimpy on the cheese on top. The Spanish rice was very good, light and fluffy. Serivce was good and very attentive. Overall a good place to eat but not if you are wanting unforgettable mouthgasm's.
It was our first time visiting Casa Rio. We chose to sit outside; the pigeons were readily available to clean up anything that may hit the ground. This didn't bother us but if you are not a bird person sitting outside won't be an option for you. Our waitress came to the table with a smile and checked on us throughout the meal. I enjoyed the Chicken Fajita Nachos (minus the beans) and my husband had the Crispy Tacos with beef. The tacos were a more greasy than expected but overall we enjoyed our meal.
Apart from being the oldest and the nostalgic view I was not super impressed but Rio. The wait was like 45 mins .. you can get drinks at the bar while you wait. Drinks were mediocre… I have had better back in Georgia :) no free chips you have yo pay! Food was just ok I was not even getting the Mexican flavors. Not Mexican hot salsa nothing. Enchiladas were blah … the only thing cool was the view. I came here thinking of the Mexican experience and was disappointed … I could do a better version myself at home. Oh and the dessert was not that great either
Good Mexican singers and the food is awesome. Exactly beside the Riverwalk. Service is really good too. I notice that older white Americans love this place because it gives them a nostalgic sensation of the good old days.
I've been wanting to eat here the past few times I've been to the San Antonio Riverwalk and I finally did! Yay, the colorful umbrellas! I got the street tacos and my son got kids chicken with rice and beans. The salsa was not bad, the tortilla chips were good, my tacos were pretty tasty, the rice and beans were okay, and my son ate some of his food. He drank all of his white milk and my horchata was great; not too sweet! The atmosphere (we ate outside right by the water) was amazing, the service (Matthew) was good, and the only sad part was watching mother nature being unfair. Overall it didn't cost too much, we had a one of a kind experience, and I'm glad I can now say I've been here!
What happened to this iconic San Antonio Mexican restaurant on the Riverwalk? It had been 10+ years since I’d eaten here. Used to bring my kids here when they were younger. I’m here on business, so I decided to stop by and have a quick dinner for nostalgia’s sake. Kind of disappointing. To be clear, the service was still very good. Super friendly staff. And the atmosphere and location is good — I mean, it’s on the Riverwalk for heavens sake. But the food was really just average. To be specific: Chips - 3 out of 5 Queso - 4 out of 5 Pollo Asado w/Poblano Sauce - 2 of 5 Refried beans - 3 of 5 Mexican rice - 3 of 5 Flour tortillas - 4 out of 5 (fresh and hot!) Seriously, there are so many other Mexican places to choose from, that Casa Rio needs to go back to their roots and figure where they lost their way. Sorry to be so blunt, guys.
We went there for 2 main reasons: vegetarian options and riverfront views and were happy with both. The server was ok and so was the food - we expected more flavor. The rice was really good. Just FYI, chips and salsa aren't free but they are very reasonably priced. We ordered the following: Salsa - fresh Queso - good Guac - ok Veg fajita - decent Veg Enchiladas - ok Vegan chalupa - ok, got tostada Veg nachos - only bean and cheese, got charged extra for adding jalapenos for flavor
Outdoor dining right by Riverwalk. The vibe is good, the service was fine besides the limited English with the waiters. Asked them how big the plates/servings are and they only replied with "It's Healthy" 🤦♂️ the food was cafeteria-level at best. We ordered half the menu and it was essentially the same 5-6 "Mexican" food combos. Shrimp tacos was good and everything else was on the level of Taco Bell.
Service was ok. Waiter was kind, but very crowded small tables. The table next to us looked like they were part of our table that's how close they were. As for the food, TERRIBLE worst tacos 🌮 I have ever had, meat had alot of fat, tortillas were drenched in oil dripping. Beans tasted burnt and rice was not fully cooked. My daughters fries were uncooked and bland. Chicken fajitas dry. None of us were satisfied with our meal, and I don't think I'm picky but this place was definitely horrible. Only ok thing was the horchata drink and I would give if a 4.
After waiting 51 minutes for our cold bland food, most of us had filled up on chips. Salsa: more like chopped canned tomatoes. Guacamole was decent. Tacos not worth the price. Husband said street tacos were terrible. To me, it looked like stewed meat from a can covered in sauce. If you want real good Mexican food, then do yourself a favor: go to Guajillo's off 410. We came here because family came to San Antonio and stayed at a hotel on the Riverwalk and chose this place. Kids enjoyed the chicken strips and fries.
This was my first time here, and it will also be my last. I arrived expecting an enjoyable experience, but unfortunately, it was quite the opposite. The food was truly unpleasant, and to make matters worse, the waiter Gerard was rude: he brought us the bill without even being asked, as if he was rushing us. This kind of behavior reflects a lack of professionalism in the service at Casa Rio. What a disappointment. I hope that anyone looking for good food and respectful service never considers this place as an option.
