Opinions de Chez Max Dublin
Nicely tucked away in the corner of a busy Dublin city center, Chez Max was a lovely place to dine. Quiet area, hole in the wall spot. My partner and I had no reservation prior to visiting but they were still able to seat us outside. Menu was either a two-course or three-course meal. Not to pricey considering the quality of the food and service. I slyly requested a little birthday surprise for my partner and they obliged, no hesitation. The consistent check-in from the waitress and other servers was so appreciated! Overall a delicious meal on a quiet night in a secluded yet easy to access location. Can’t complain—would eat here again!
Had a wonderful experience at Chez Max! We had the 2 course for dinner and it was amazing! The food was absolutely delicious, the wine selection was impressive, and the staff made us feel right at home. The ambience is warm, cozy, and perfectly romantic, ideal for a date night. Highly recommend!
I love my husband’s birthday dinner at Chez Max in October. Food was amazing, I could say it was the best Creme brûlée I’ve ever eaten! All friendly staff and cozy atmosphere!
Delicious food. Tried escargots for the first time and they were wonderful. Duck main was sublime as was the perfectly balanced crème brûlée. Lovely French bistro restaurant tucked away, just off Dame St. I got so much joy from this meal. French food is just the best.
A wonderful French restaurant nestled against the walls of Dublin Castle. What a pleasant surprise. The staff was wonderful and attentive. The food was fantastic. I love French food and it's hard to find. It was such a treat.
A little gem hidden outside the crowed center. Quick and prompt service. Delicious food! We didn’t drink any wine but tried the Irish beer Aphouse ( I think) Jordan the waiter was the best!! Thank you for an very nice experience!
Had a great meal Saturday before Christmas with my Family if 5. Everything was just perfect. Thanks so much
Brilliant food and service. The waiting staff were so warm, friendly and attentive and went above and beyond to make sure we had a great experience, our food was incredible, we would highly recommend the duck and the beef bourguignon. The atmosphere was lovely, we sat outside and were so warm and dry even while it was pouring outside, their outdoor area is fully heated and covered. We got a wee free drink after our meal (possibly port?) which was a lovely touch. We would definitely come back next time we visit Dublin.
Very good food! I’ve been France 5 times and I ate the best crème brûlée of my life at this restaurant! Cozy atmosphere and friendly staff!
Had an anniversary dinner at Chez Max and oh là là. What a wonderful experience! The atmosphere is romantic and authentically French. The staff was caring and looked after us really well. The food was nice although not mind blowing, but for a special occasion I definitely recommend.
Went in with my wife for a birthday dinner. Seated quickly inside and our waitress was ready for our drinks order immediately. Food came out quickly but we were never rushed. Would recommend the French onion soup and crème brûlée. Lovely outside areas at the front and back if the weather is accommodating.
Felt like I was back in France. The best creme brulee I've had in years to name one thing. 10/10
We wandered upon this delightful French restaurant while walking around Dublin. We sat outside on their patio which was absolutely lovely. Their menu had so much to offer and the price point is reasonably priced, especially because the food was beyond amazing. Our French Onion Soup was perfect. The Croque-Monsieur was the best I’ve had since visiting Paris. The service was attentive but left you in peace to thoroughly enjoy your delicious meal. We ended our meal with hot tea with their lemon sponge and Pavlova. Delicious!
It's a very rare time when you ask for a medium rare ribeye steak and It's done to perfection our server was a very bright and bubbles girl makes the meal even more enjoyable thank you Chez Max for having us
Lovely dinner on our first night in Dublin - the place is cozy, well-run, and the food is phenomenal! I had the steak frîtes, because yum, and my husband had the chicken Provençale. We both cleaned our plates, then demolished the pavlova together. Our server was delightful (from France) and the ambiance was perfect. Such a lucky find!
A French restaurant in Dublin city center. I celebrated my birthday here with a 3-course meal. The food and services are highly recommended. The food was not only beautiful but also delicious, and it was a great portion. I will definitely come back again 💖.
Perfect spot for a bistro lunch after seeing Dublin Castle. Great atmosphere to slow you down for a delicious chicken and truffle sandwich. Brendan took great care of us. Get the hot chocolate! 🥖🇫🇷☘️
Beautiful restaurant, amazing food, great service, its so pretty , great quality food great prices. Highly recommend
Lovely French bistro in a little corner on the outskirts of tourist area. Service was great and staff was friendly, atmosphere and mood was charming. Food was good. In France it would be 3+ but for outside France i will give it 4/5. Still a nice find and I will go back. The magret de canard was delicious, doesn’t need the sauce. Was a little disappointed with the escargot, not bad, but not great. Creme brulee was spot on. I saw many ordering the French Onion soup which probably would have been better than the escargot. Despite the very minor critiques, chez max is a nice find and I would highly recommend it.
Nice food, good vibe, great waiters, amazing dinner
This restaurant was a recommendation near the meeting spot for the Viking Legacy Trail Tour. It did not disappoint. Service was lovely and my waitress was very friendly. Food was delicious - I finished it all and normally that’s a feat! And the coffee was superb, wish I could have tried dessert. They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner with fine French cuisine, I didn’t know what to expect as I randomly walked in, but it did not disappoint!
Love this restaurant! As a french person it truly feels like home, the food is incredible and the service is quite fast, congrats to the chef! Will definitely eat here more than once!
We went back and it was superb again. We were outside, heaters kept us warm as did tye mulled wine, and the atmosphere was festive. Love this place and strongly recommend it. We were tucked into the only outdoor space they had, but it was cute and the atmosphere was great. Their food is terrific. Especially their pate, and their dessert platter. Wow. Only issue was that they ran out of the wine we were drinking, but I think that was our fault, not theirs. We were making up for the lost time during Covid. We will be back!!!!
most definitely going to become regulars here !! one of the best restaurants i’ve ever been to in dublin. the staff were all so amazing and they made sure everything was perfect during the whole night. the food was just perfect, from starters to desserts it was all just perfect !! inside is absolutely beautiful and so clean. would definitely recommend to everybody i know and everyone reading this review. thank you for the amazing experience :))
a lovely french restaurant loved the decor and the food and staff very friendly
You need to book first. We went as a party of two and chose to sit outside. Despite the cold weather, the outdoor seating was warm and comfortable, which made for a pleasant experience. For starters, we ordered the Soupe à l'oignon and the Ballotine de Foie Gras de Canard. The soup was good, though not remarkable, so I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. On the other hand, the foie gras was delicious, and the bread served with it was excellent, complementing the dish perfectly. For the main course, we had the Confit de Canard with Pommes Sarladaise & Choux Rouge and the Boeuf Bourguignon. The duck confit was outstanding, with tender, flavorful meat, a fantastic sauce, and beets that added a special touch. The boeuf bourguignon was also wonderful, with the meat melting in the mouth. To finish, we tried the Crème Brûlée. We had tasted it elsewhere before and weren't big fans, but here it was a pleasant surprise. The crust was perfect, cracking under the spoon as it should, and the flavor was spot-on. We would definitely return to this restaurant!
Chez Maz is criminally underrated. I booked an outdoor table for the first weekend of February and even though I had hesitated at first my nerves were instantly gone upon my arrival. The outdoor seating was well covered which kept the area warm and cut noise level of the bustling seating to a minimum. The option of blankets behind our chairs was a great option but they weren’t considered as the space was toastie. The staff were amazing and interacted with us that helped us settle down quickly. We decided to get two option course, and our main course were the steak Entrecôte & Frites “maison” and the Suprême de Poulet & Cassoulet de Haricots Blancs. Seeing the review beforehand I decided to get the steak. It was a 7/10. The dish lost points on having no veg along with the chips and steak. This could have turned the dish to an 9/10. The last point would be if Bearnaise sauce was an option and especially it being a classic French sauce I was hoping to see on the menu. Both additions would easily bring this dish to an 10/10. The biggest surprise of the night was the chicken. My partner offered me some and even though I didn’t want it it was still put on my plate to eat. I can see why she was so reluctant for me to try it. I cannot thank her enough for giving me a taste to a flavour that I have experienced before. The Pork Belly and Merguez Sausage added so much flavour that the chicken wouldn’t even be needed. After having a sample, I demanded more it was that good! I would easily travel from Cork to Dublin just to taste this dish. The white beans helps bulks the meal but it gave it a nice texture change as well along with the succulent chicken. The dessert option we choose were the Ganache au Chocolat noir et Sorbet Mangue and the Café Gourmand. What stole the show for the dessert was the Ganache au Chocolat noir. It has a darkness of 70% and once it’s in your mouth don’t eat it but let it slowly melt. With the lime biscuit crumble it helped provided a punch of sour lime that helped cut the richness of the chocolate. I will be back for this dessert. I got the Café Gourmand, and it was worth getting but the various options were smaller than expected. The different options suited each other but at the end of the day the Ganache au Chocolat noir was too good. Overall experience was a 9.2/10. This can be increased by the options I suggested above.
We had a wonderful meal Christmas Eve. The food was really superb and despite being madly busy the staff were cheerful and full of fun. We had a great meal and slowly savoured each bite. What a joyful way to celebrate. Thank you all so much.
What a lovely and genuine place. It feels like the rest of the world doesn't exist when we're here. No modernised or pretentious extravagance, just the most unique people, superb food and the sweetest of atmospheres.
Chez Max is a wonderful dining experience. It is important to note that although the restaurant is located in Dublin, it runs on French time, so expect that slower paced service to come as part of the package. The staff, the food, the interior, everything was beautiful!
Absolutely gorgeous restaurant. Every bite of every dish has always blown me away. The staff are very friendly and the atmosphere is nice a quiet. Couldn’t recommend more highly.
Book for a birthday meal. What a great night…the only issue is what to order as everything so delicious! I love this place…it’s like you are transported to a little side street in Paris! Can’t wait to revisit!
This is just such a great place. We had a 6pm reservation and the place was buzzing so the atmosphere was great. I had the onion soup and chicken cassoulet which were very tasty and my the friends had something equally delicious. The staff were very professional (and very authentically French).
my boyfriend and i ate at chez max today, we got moules mariniers with fries, a vegetarian roasted vegetable sandwich and creme brulee. the food was absolutely delicious, beautifully seasoned and presented, and the waitresses were all just so completely lovely. i had a weird run in with another person who was dining and so i told a waitress who proceeded to move us to another table no bother, they were extremely kind and polite to us the whole time we were eating, and a lady who i assume was a manager had given us a little treat at the end to cheer me up. just so completely lovely. don’t miss this restaurant if you are ever in dublin - the food is authentically french, the restaurant itself is presented gorgeously and in a parisian kitschy style, but the best thing about the place is the staff. all such gorgeously kind and hard working honest people. i hardly ever write reviews but i am very touched by the kind gesture and understanding from the staff. thank you so much i won’t ever forget my visit <3
Chez Max was an exceptional experience. My mom and I were visiting Ireland on vacation and we went to Chez Max 2 out of the 5 nights. Not only was the atmosphere and customer service amazing, the food itself was unbelievable. I highly recommend and will be coming back every time I come to Ireland!
A must-see special place for a special night. Great vibey atmosphere, lovely friendly attentive service, and even better food: I’m still dreaming of that succulent duck confit. Thank you for taking such great care of us this Valentine’s.
Food amazing. Wine list for the most part, decent. The riesling tastes like bad apple juice. Would Not recommend. The wine glasses they served our white wine in were ugly and cheap, but the other tables got adult glasses. The champagne on the list, the only one is great. Escargot and Foie gras, impeccable. The trout and the duck confit, also really great. Staff for the most part friendly and enjoyable.
Chez Max – Allo Allo vibes without the need for ear-cheese A charming little faux-French café tucked beside the castle. We popped in for lunch, but I’d wager it does a decent evening turn too. Think Allo Allo – but without anyone sayng “I will say zis only once,” and with better tea. It’s quaint, slightly cramped, and just the right amount of kitsch. Service was friendly, though we were left to marinate a bit before anyone noticed us. Tea? Good. Baguette? Also good. René? Sadly absent. Conclusion: Cosy, quirky, and worth a stop – whether you're hungry or just hoping to spot a resistance member in a beret.
Chez max is a very serene place to have a bite and escape the fuss of Dublin city. They have great service and coffee. The food is worth its price except the quiche (dish of the week or day) which was rather small to be a full filling lunch option. Three days later we came back this time I had a cafe gourmand for 9,50 euros and ly partner the croque madame. The croque madam is around 11 euros and is very tasty. The cafe gourmand was really nice although I did think the macaron and small chocolate tart were just fine. The crème brûlée on the other hand, amazing. Overall I would definitely recommend this place because of their fair pricing and calm setting. A bonus is the option to pick more pricy but very nice looking and smelling dishes. Just don’t forget they do make u pay a service fee around 4 euro’s!
We had a two course meal each and the housewine with that. The price for the 2 courses is reasonable and the portions are good. The food was delicious and the venue is very cute but quite crowded. We booked in advance at peak hours and would recommend to do so. Tho the staff made it clear after an hour that the table needs to be cleared soon, which made us feel rushed. However I would still recommend trying this restaurant as the French food and wine selection is great.
Had a beautiful meal, 2 weeks ago.Walked in with no reservations. I was made to feel very welcome. The food was very appetising. Not expensive Also, the waitress was very pleasant and a great help with dicscribing the dishes . We enjoyed so much, we have a reservation for this Saturday evening. GO... You won't be upset.
A straightforward and easy to read menu. The choices for Christmas lunch were limited but there was something for everyone. They cook a delicious seared entrecote. Nice mini cheese board and French onion soup. Pleasant cosy atmosphere. Recommended.
The food was absolutely amazing, and the service was great! Unfortunately, I am not giving 5 stars because the coffee tasted a bit off, and more importantly, the tables are way too close to each other. I felt like I was also dining with the two tables on either side of mine, offering absolutely no privacy and a noisy environment.
Had a lovely night at Chez Max on Friday night, a little slice of France in Dublin. Food good, smoked salmon starter especially. Cafe Gourmand was a lovely end to a lovely dinner. Service was great from everyone that night.... quick, efficient and attentive without being overbearing. Only thing...wine too dear.... well north of 40 euro for most bottles.
It's a charming bistro. A good menu of traditional fare in a quaint space. Service was a little mixed but the waitress was new so we'll give it the benefit of the doubt. Most of the food was excellent. I'd go again.
A Hidden gem, by Dublin Castle. French by name, french by nature. I enjoyed a delicious flame grilled Ribbye, which came with very tasty thin fries and an exceptional jus on the side. Dining partner had the main size portion of Moules Frites. While they were tasty, the mussels were too small. This is a universal issue in Ireland now, not just at Chez Max. I really believe that if Irish restaurants cannot source nice plump mussels, then they should not have them on the menu. At chez Max, the addition of some bread to mop up the creamy broth would be a nice touch. Overall, a lovely café/restaurant, with great menu and attentive staff. Will return soon
For a three-course meal for two, we paid €90 + €10 (felt a bit pressured to add). The food was overpriced and didn’t live up to expectations. While some of the staff were lovely, the French girl was not very welcoming — perhaps because we’re not French. I had big expectations, but unfortunately, we don’t plan on returning.
For that price... Sat outside, cold with a plant in your face. All 4 plates, bar the stew, were extremely mediocre. Steak and chips more akin to TGI Friday's than an expensive restaurant. Chips slapped down on a plate. We only discovered there was a green sauce with it at the end, since it was hidden underneath the chips. A child probably assembled the place. Charged us 5 euro for water without offering tap.
I am truly disappointed with this service. I had onion soup during my trip to France before, and it was absolutely delicious. But the onion soup I had here was really not good at all — the taste was completely different and unpleasant. On top of that, the staff were very rude, especially the male waiter. After we finished eating and they he clearing the table, he very rudely asked my bf, “Did you like the food? Are you sure??” in a disrespectful manner.
The place is very sweet. Service was very slow. The french onion soup appetizer was wonderful! However, the entrees were inedible. The beef bourguignon tasted very heavily of bacon (overpowering). The steak was very overcooked, over-salted, and so tough I was not able to cut through it. We were not able to get the attention of a server, so just sat there and waited 45 minutes for them to come and clear our untouched plates. We then went out for pizza. A complete waste of money!!!
