We wanted a dog friendly burger place and this was perfect. Quite a few pooches on the outdoor patio and they bring special water bowls. Good service and great burgers...nice char and chargrilled flavor. Not fun to get to with road construction, but it was worth the trouble.
As always the food is solid and good. Haven't been here in a while and decided to go today. Warm and cozy environment, great service and honestly the BEST FRIES in Houston! We got meatloaf but the chicken mill valley is also one of my favs. They even can split the portions for you and know that the portions are HUGE!
Come hungry as the portions are huge; especially the salads! Hands down the best French Dip 😋 and they're not kidding by the title "world's best chocolate chip cookie". Excellent dessert options.
Went to Barnaby’s and had a great experience. Started with the nacho chips—paired with an amazing, flavorful salsa. The kids’ meals were solid, especially the sliders and crispy chicken, which they really enjoyed. We also ordered the iron skillet steak, which was cooked well and full of flavor. Finished off with the chocolate chip cookie, and wow—absolutely delicious! Overall, great food and a family-friendly spot we’d happily visit again. 😋🍪
We had a wonderful time at Barnaby’s Café. The moment we walked in, the atmosphere felt friendly, relaxed, and welcoming — the kind of place where you instantly feel comfortable. The staff were amazing: attentive, kind, and very professional. They made sure we had everything we needed and checked on us just the right amount. The food was absolutely delicious. Everything came out fresh, flavorful, and perfectly cooked. You can really tell that Barnaby’s puts care into every dish. It’s the kind of meal that leaves you happy and satisfied. The combination of great service, tasty food, and a cozy environment makes Barnaby’s Café one of those places you want to return to again and again. We truly enjoyed our visit and highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great dining experience.
My Barnaby’s Revelation at 1701 Shepherd: Salad, Sips & Chocolate Heaven! Okay, Houston foodies, listen up. I finally made it to Barnaby’s on Shepherd dr. (1701 Shepherd dr., to be precise!) after hearing the buzz, and wow – it absolutely lived up to the hype. Forget just a meal; it was a full-on flavor experience, and three things absolutely stole the show for me: the Chicken Caesar Salad, the Strawberry Lemonade, and that legendary Chocolate Addiction Cake. Seriously, buckle up. First, let’s talk salad. Now, I know what you’re thinking: “Caesar? Really?” But trust me, Barnaby’s Chicken Caesar Salad ($17.50) is NOT your average limp lettuce situation. This was a masterpiece in a bowl. The romaine was *perfectly* crisp and cold, tossed generously in a Caesar dressing that hit all the right notes – creamy, tangy, garlicky, and anchovy-rich without being overwhelming. The croutons? Golden, crunchy, and plentiful. But the star of the savory show? That grilled chicken. It was incredibly juicy, seasoned just right, and piled high – seriously, no scrimping here! It wasn’t just a topping; it was a proper protein powerhouse integrated beautifully with the greens and dressing. Every bite was a satisfying crunch, a burst of savory flavor, and that delightful chicken texture. It felt indulgent yet somehow still fresh. Hands down, one of the best Chicken Caesar Salads I’ve had *anywhere*. To wash it down? The Strawberry Lemonade ($4.50). Pure, simple, refreshing perfection. None of that overly sweet, artificial-tasting syrup water. This tasted like real lemons got together with ripe strawberries and decided to throw a pool party in my glass. It was tangy, fruity, perfectly balanced, and ice-cold. Exactly what you crave on a Houston day (or any day, really). I might have ordered a second one… no regrets. Now. The grand finale. The reason you save room (or, let’s be honest, make room): The Chocolate Addiction Cake ($12.00). The name isn’t lying. This slice is iconic for a reason. Imagine layers upon layers of incredibly moist, deeply chocolatey cake, interspersed with rich, smooth chocolate mousse and finished with a decadent chocolate ganache frosting. The texture is pure bliss – a perfect marriage of dense cake and airy mousse. The flavor? Intense, pure chocolate satisfaction, but not cloyingly sweet. It’s sophisticated, rich, and utterly, utterly addictive. I savored every single bite, and by the end, I understood the cult following. It’s less a dessert and more a chocolate experience. Worth every single calorie and then some. The Vibe? The location at 1701 Shepherd has that classic, cozy Barnaby’s charm – eclectic, a bit retro, bustling but not too loud. Service was friendly and efficient, which is always appreciated. The Verdict? Barnaby’s on Shepherd Dr. delivered a fantastic meal. That Chicken Caesar Salad is a revelation – proof a salad can be both hearty and delicious. The Strawberry Lemonade is the ultimate thirst-quencher. And the Chocolate Addiction Cake? It’s not just dessert; it’s a mandatory Houston food pilgrimage. I’m already plotting my return, probably just for the cake… and maybe *another* lemonade. Highly, highly recommend! 5 stars for these three superstars alone!
Great service, pet friendly, prices are up to par with the quality of food, expect no less than great quality, make sure to ask the server for recommendations as well as any other requests, they do have a patio seating area next to the main entrance, with lots of shade and an air humidifier, they even have dog menu available, staff are super welcoming, the strawberry lemonade is on point as well as the strawberry -rita I would suggest that you give it a try, parking is available on both ends, the patio seating has shade and umbrellas, to enjoy a nice hot summer afternoon with with your pet friend, breakfast options as well available with delicious options, please make sure to try the fries with blue cheese
Great service from the waiters and cooks. Food was deliciously tasty and delivered fast. We went during a weekday for lunch and place was packed of regular customers who frequent the place and know the staff. We will probably visit either this or another restaurant of the franchise in the future.
I've been going to this place forever and from the desserts to entrées, it's never let me down. My go-to is the Bison Burger with Sweet Potato Fries... YUMMM! The burger is huge and the mountain of fries is always more than enough. The wait staff is very attentive and helpful and the place is well kept. They have a Dog friendly patio as well, it's always full on nice days. The Parking Lot is small but there's plenty of street side parking available. My only "gripe" is that I wish it were closer to me. I live in Sugar Land and this restaurant is in River Oaks, so not exactly down the street from me. Oh well, the drive is always worth it so it's all good!
Dining Experience @ Barnaby's Cafe. . "Barnaby was a big sheepdog who went to heaven when I was twelve". This poignant story in a single sentence is haunting and bittersweet. . So it is that the proud owners of Barnaby's Cafe named their first outlet after the beloved sheepdog in December 1992. . Didn't expect their Chili Dog (USD $17) to be a foot-long version! Between fluffy soft hot dog buns with bready sweet flavour sits a snappy juicy foot-long grilled beef sausage with meaty savoury salty herbal spice flavour, to which we topped with chili con carne, grated cheddar cheese, and spring onions. . Served alongside crisp Cajun spiced potato waffle fries with starchy salty spice savoury flavour, yum. . Loved the Apple Pie À La Mode (USD $10), with its flaky crumbly texture to the pie crust and juicy crunchy tender bite to the spiced green apple filling, carrying smoky bready fruity sweet sour spice flavour. Served with a creamy smooth vanilla ice cream with floral milky sweet flavour.
My recent visit to Bernaby's Cafe left me pleasantly surprised with its generous portions and satisfying flavors. I opted for a salad, while my husband indulged in a big cheeseburger, and we both left with contented appetites and even some leftovers for the next day. First and foremost, let's talk about the salad. The portion size was indeed impressive, offering excellent value for the price. The freshness of the ingredients was evident, with crisp lettuce, vibrant vegetables, and a delightful medley of flavors. The combination of different textures and the thoughtful arrangement of toppings made the salad both visually appealing and enjoyable to eat. The dressing provided a perfect balance, enhancing the overall taste without overpowering the natural flavors of the ingredients. I appreciated the fact that the salad was substantial enough to leave me satisfied without feeling overly stuffed. On the other hand, my husband's choice, the big cheeseburger, was a hearty and indulgent treat. The burger patty was juicy and cooked to perfection, nestled between two soft and toasted buns. The addition of melted cheese, fresh vegetables, and a tangy sauce elevated the classic burger experience. The portion size lived up to its name, ensuring that my husband's hunger was adequately satiated. It's worth noting that the accompanying side dish, whether it was fries or another option, perfectly complemented the burger and added to the overall enjoyment of the meal. One aspect worth mentioning is the friendly and attentive service we received at Bernaby's Cafe. The staff members were courteous and prompt in taking our orders and ensuring that we had everything we needed throughout our meal. It added to the overall positive dining experience and made us feel welcomed and valued as customers.

We found this place because our dog was with us in the trip and we was needing a place to have a breakfast! we didn't get dissapointed! as we came in a very kind lady receive us and gave to Matz (our dog) a cookie and water. The place is very nice and the food pretty tasty. The place is clean even with the dogs that visit! we know that is a hard part, we have Matz in home so I can see that they take care of that. The ladys taking care of us awesome! service 10 stars!
After the Houston Half Marathon, my friends and I went to Barnaby’s Café on S. Shepherd for a well-earned breakfast. The room had an upbeat neighborhood energy, lively without being chaotic. Amelia took terrific care of us from start to finish. Warm welcome, quick refills, and just the right amount of check ins. Kudos to Amelia for being outstanding. The food was excellent across the board, and the clear winner was the Chicken Fried Steak & Eggs. The crust was crisp and well-seasoned, the gravy comforting without feeling heavy, and the eggs were cooked exactly as requested. It was the perfect recovery plate after a long run. We also enjoyed the French Toast Breakfast Sandwich and a classic Breakfast Plate. Both were executed cleanly, with fluffy eggs and hearty sides that felt thoughtfully prepared rather than filler. A special note on the salads. No matter what you choose, you cannot go wrong, especially because the portions are big. Fresh, balanced, and satisfying, they work as a full meal or for sharing. All told, this was another great visit. With food that overdelivers, portions that satisfy, and service that makes you feel looked after, Barnaby’s remains our go to spot for a post-race breakfast.
I could have easily given 3 stars based on the multiple mistakes made when ordering my meal which was the breakfast meal which I ordered scrambled eggs with cheese, bacon extra crispy and grits. My server brought out my plate with hash browns and no grits, plus no cheese on the eggs. She proceeded to return with cheese on the eggs and after asking the grits. Later on I realized my wheat toast was never bought out, so my waitress came back with it. My server was very friendly and kind, and the food was great. My waitress stated they had some new staff in the back, so I was cool about that. My lady had a side of chicken sausage which I tried and was great along with hash browns which she liked. The waitress later gave us a cookie and a rice crispy treat for the order issues and that was sincerely appreciated.

Staff was friendly when we walked in, and the wait staff was attentive at first. Service slowed down later in the meal, and it took quite a while to get a refill and eventually our check. The food itself tasted good, but unfortunately both my wife and I experienced digestive issues a few hours afterward. We hadn’t eaten anything else before or after, so it was likely related to the meal. Overall, an average experience and a 3/5 for us.

I’ll start with the acknowledgment that I only ever went once and tried one thing - so my review is inherently flawed. Please read with a grain of salt. But since I am turned off from the idea of returning on the basis of that one experience, I’ll go ahead and leave a review already. I ordered the healthy plate. The server was lovely and accommodating and the service was prompt. The food was quite simple - which is not a flaw per se, if the price is fair, which I think it is in Barnaby’s case - but the experience was not great. I had the weirdest chicken sausage of my life; it tasted so strongly of cinnamon and nutmeg it invited comparison to a Christmas-time cinnamon roll, but in an unpleasant way. It also had the texture of bits of ground rubbery tendon-y chicken parts, so I ended up swallowing the first bite out of politeness but not eating any further. The cold scrambled eggs seemed to completely lack seasoning - not even salt. And the fruit cup contained just old, wilty, room-temperature fruit, so I ended up not touching it. In total I think I took maybe two or three bites before abandoning my meal. Another thing influencing my opinion was my perception of the cleanliness of the place. The bathroom kind of gave me the ick when I went to wash my hands and some of the mirrors and tables were a bit dirty. I’m something of a germaphobe so bear that in mind, but it ended up having an additional negative effect on my experience of the food. If you too have the cultural conditioning of an east European immigrant mom with respect to hygiene, I give a fair warning that you will not love Barnaby’s. All in all, service was great and I tipped fairly (25%) but I would not recommend Barnaby’s to someone looking for a new eatery.
I ordered the mushroom swiss burger and my girlfriend got the chicken & waffles. When the food came out, we didn’t get any utensils or napkins and I had to get it from an empty table. When we finished, I had to go ask for the check and a container at the front because nobody checked up on us. The food was decent but on the bland side. The decorations were nice though. The overall experience did not live up to the reviews we read.
I’m a regular and the last few times I have just been so disappointed. I suggest if you want your food done right and actually taste good you should dine in. I tried contacting the restaurant but the number wasn’t working. The burgers were way overcooked. Fries soggy before I reached my car and I placed order there and it took a while for my order to come out. It just feels like no cares were given at all. The lemonade hasn’t been good the last few times either it’s watery or has a weird taste and doesn’t taste like or give me lemonade at all. The onions and pickles were old. Forgot the mayo on side. Bread tastes old. Waste of $50. Just dine in if you want good food from them. After trying with them so many times I don’t even think it’s worth going back. The service is great and they are really nice. But the food…it’s a no for me.
