Opinions de El Rey Taqueria Houston
I love this place! Their coffee is so so good and such a wonderful price too, and it is consistent from location to location. The food has always been good, even after going to this establishment more than 10 times now. The service has always been really friendly, very nice, and very helpful. The atmosphere is wonderful, accepting, and calming, feels sort of like home. If home we're a busy restaurant. 🙂 I highly recommend El Rey's for its coffee ☕ and morning fares 🍳. I'm sure the afternoon food is just as good. I just haven't gone in the afternoon.
Taqueria El Rey has been my go to spot in Houston for years. Their food has been incredible ever since time I go in there for almost 2 decades. I opt for the 3 amigos plate most time due to the selection of old school tacos they present ( no over sauced foo foo tacos here). Ingredients are always fresh and they actually have a chicken rotisserie that roast at least 50 at a time. Horchata is a guilty pleasure I can’t resist most times. Seating is kinda small so beware- but not so small to make uncomfortable. Centrally located for those late nights in town. Been there many times and will continue for many years to come.
Been coming here for years. Bertha and the whole team are always so friendly and helpful. The Cuban/Mexican menu items remind me of Miami. The King of great food.
I have been a customer of El Rey Taqueria for five years. Cuban fast food with a Mexican twist ….I love the food and the employees that wait on you. They all have a great attitude. Everything that I have ever tried is great. They also have coffee and espresso and fresh squeeze juices. I visit frequently at least 2-3 times a week. 👍🏼
Don't know what it is but this is a nostalgic place that brings memories of my younger days. Love em
I had tacos and chips and guacamole. Everything I had was good. They sell individual tacos so you can get whatever combination of tacos that you want. They also have tortas, rotisserie chicken, quesadillas, and various other plates.
My favorite coffee in town and the best breakfast tacos 🤩
I love going to El Rey Taqueria after my hikes at Memorial Park. Nothing like a couple Vegan Cuban tacos after an arduous walk in the Texas heat! Light and fresh, but packs generous protein with the black beans! Yum!
Tortilla Soup was awesome. It will be a part of my ongoing life!
Great food and salads. Coffee is good too
A common stop whenever we visit this area of town. El Rey is consistently delicious. Great value. If I really want to skimp, I will buy a kids meal for myself while my kids enjoy a delicious tortilla soup or quesadilla. This morning my daughter fabulously enjoyed the breakfast.
I enjoyed my first experience here! The staff were attentive to helping with the line as it formed. I don't eat meat (pescatarian) and I decided to try the Cuban vegan tacos. They were delicious! He didn't mind that I wanted one corn tortilla and one wheat tortilla either! I shared chips and salsa with my friends, as we ate after going to a local bar. GREAT food AND service. I didn't know it, but they called me by name for my order. My only regret is that I did not tip! I can't wait to come back!
At first glance the price was a little intimidating at almost $4 per taco. It was truly worth it, the fish taco was so good and the tacos Pastor out this world! The horchata was creamy and not to sweet. This is definitely worth the $70 I spent. (The picture doesn't justify how good it is)
Everything I have gotten from here has been phenomenal! I’ve probably came here atleast 10 times in the past month! Salads to tacos, tortas, and their fresh drinks! 10/10 recommend! Also, Roy one of the managers has been there almost every time I’ve gone and he’s been so hospitable and friendly!
The food was good but I was disappointed that the Cuban sandwich wasn’t a better made more authentic sandwich. This was take out and the rest of the food was on point. Will try again to see if I missed something when ordering but... this Cuban sandwich was just some cold cuts on a piece of torta bread. Would not order this again.
Hello I came here the other day and I wanted to let you guys know that Nathan was a wonderful person he helped me with the menu & he was really nice with my family.
First time ever being..staff was extremely friendly and helpful with the menu. Food was delicious.
Everything I have tried I liked. The atmosphere of the place is very cool.
Great food but limited space. Excellent coffee.
Outstanding breakfast and coffee location! Loved the large mugs the coffee is served in, and the service is top notch. They go above and beyond to make your visit the best!
Before goin out, we needed food! We r not from here and had to google “restaurants” and only a couple places were open and we decided on this Cuban restaurant. This place was delicious. Service was fast. Didn’t have to wait long for our food. We dined in after 10pm. I couldn’t decide what to eat so I had both, the Grilled Shrimp Taco and the Cuban Taco had my choice of fajita meat, black beans, plantains, with a touch of sour cream. My boyfriend had the quesadilla. We both liked the green salsa better, with a perfect spice. We will definitely eat here again.
Love coming here...I always order the Cuban tacos. As you can see, my taco is a bit messy but that was totally my fault. It's a flavor explosion. The platanos maduros are also pretty good. The Cuban sandwich lacked a few extra slices of meat but we didn't complain. Parking is sometimes an issue, but it's worth the hassle.
The food is extremely good and fresh!!! Their coffee is outstanding forget your lala land and Starbucks! And service is top notch!!! HIGHLY Recommended 10/10
Taco Tuesday is the best night! Buy 2 get 1! The prices on google maps are not accurate. Grilled veggies are $4.25 for example. It’s a nice portion of mixed veggies. They have good vegan choices and a wide variety if you aren’t. They usually deliver good food and service. I wish they would get rid of the styrofoam. Besides that, I can’t complain
The breakfast tacos at El Rey were excellent. They have a large variety of breakfast tacos as well as other lunch and dinner options all at a reasonable price. The thing I most noticed about the tacos were that they felt very fresh. I will definitely be coming back here to try more items on the menu.
I am obsessed with their chicken tortilla soup! Hands down the best I have had anywhere. It has the perfect amount of spice, broth, and delicious rotisserie chicken. I generally get mine via Uber Eats and they package the tortilla strips, cheese and avocado separately. I also order extra chicken to give me extra protein, so it's loaded with chicken. This is the perfect soup for a cold day or if you are feeling under the weather. I will start trying other things here but for now, this soup is everything!
Very delicious food, customer service and food were very quick. I ordered two meals and both came out hot and delicious, definitely recommend this food if you like fusion hispanic cuisine. The maduros and fried yuca are essentials with every one of my visits.
Can never go wrong with the Cuban protein bowl. Not stingy with salsa either. Love this place
When you're craving a torta and it tastes so good! Even after being delivered. Will definitely order again
Bertha and Wendy are the best example of what service should be… courteous, friendly and know how to make good coffee…. Only reason i go back,.almost every day !
Consistently enjoy drive-through pick up of lunch for our office. The food is an interesting fusion of Cuban cuisine with a Mexican flare.
Came in for breakfast before heading into a meet a Buyer client. Ordered Eggs & Fajitas taco and a few bacons in the side. Fresh and delicious taco. Bacon crunchy - just right! Great food and services at El Rey. If you know anyone looking to Buy or Sale a home here in River Oaks, I can be there Trusted Realtor Jeff.
We love coming here. For breakfast, getting tacos. They use real eggs !!!!, we almost always come after the Sunday morning bike ride. The coffee and food are great. Excellent value for money, super friendly staff and a great atmosphere
This place serves up delicious fresh foods quickly at very reasonable prices. The fresh lemonade is excellent. The Cuban beef fajita taco was outstanding, as were the guacamole, plantains, and the grilled salmon. Brian at the front counter was very hospitable and gave service better than many sit down full service restaurants. I can't wait to go back and try something new there! The flavorful food tastes so fresh and is made to order quickly.
The roasted chicken and shrimp salad was delicious, with a great combination of flavors and generous portions. However, the dining area is rather small and can become quite crowded, making it more suitable for takeout orders. The service was satisfactory. However, it would be beneficial if the staff had a more comprehensive understanding of the menu items.
Great spot for tacos and tortas. The new rotisserie chicken garlic torta was great (especially with added fresh jalapenos). The service was fast and friendly. The dining area was clean and the bathrooms were extremely clean which is unusual for restaurants these days. Overall great experience.
Close to my work and I go here sometimes I usually get the half chicken but this time I tried the fajita torta. They have a new way of doing it now and it was real good! I got it at the drive thru and had no problems. The drive thru here is weird if it gets backed up it will overflow onto Shepherd. If this happens just pass and enter on Washington and park.
I’ve been eating here for over a decade, this is my first review. The food is consistently delicious. And this may be a bold statement but I think they have the best shrimp tacos in houston. The plantains are always perfect. Parking is a challenge and the drive thru can be a pain but it’s worth the chaos.
Professional, and friendly staff. They are clean and handle your food with care by taking extra measures to wrap and seal it properly. I ordered delivery recently and was more than satisfied. I had all condiments and my precise directions were followed. Thank you for always being on point, delivering great service, and taking safety measures with the handling of the food. Great JOB 👍

I had the three amigos. I chose two salmon tacos and a grilled chicken taco. Black beans and rice. It was pretty good and for the price I'll go back for sure. It was filling as well. I had togo and it was pretty good. I ended up eating one of the tacos before making it home. Nice flavor to everything. I want to try out more of the menu now.
The food is fantastic. But the atmosphere needs lots of work. The music is too loud and the lights are too bright.
I stopped by for a quick bite and was intrigued enough by the menu to get something else. The Havana plate turned out to be a great choice. The pork was tender and flavorful. And the fried ripe plantains were delicious too. I intend to try out other menu items whenever the chance comes around. The setting was casual, and complemented with quick and friendly service.
Great place to grab a delicious quick bite, portions are great! Initially thought the location was a mexican taco place, having the Cuban options definitely made this stop worth it!
I really enjoyed the food it is a little pricey not much at all very much worth it. Very clean restaurant with attentive polite staff. I recommend this place if your in the area and looking for a mix of Cuban and Mexican
Remember the buy two get one free Taco deal on Tuesdays. The beef, fish, and shrimp tacos are on point. Don't bother trying the chicken tacos, nothing special. Each Taco is between $2.5 and $4, depending on the meat. The convenient drive thru makes a huge differences as the lines inside the store can get long. Ample parking available.

I had ordered multiple meals for my family to go and while most were fine the nachos left much to be desired. They weren’t bad but they simply weren’t that good either. The queso cheese as opposed to more traditional melted cheeses made many of the chips soggy; additionally neither of the 2 nacho orders had the sour cream that was asked for on the side. To give credit where it’s due they were plentiful with the beef and the guacamole which did not go unnoticed :) . Unrelated to the food despite ordering 6 to-go meals we only received 2 sets of to-go cutlery prompting logistical issues. Overall not a bad experience and the food was good but definitely a few strokes shy of a preferable experience.
Been going here for years. Quality has gone down hill. The queso is consistently terrible. Cold, so thick it breaks the chips, even though they’re stale. Tonight it took 20 minutes to get through the drive through and they still had to ask me which order was mine when I got to the window. Not even that crowded. Pretty disappointing for $16 for 2 tacos and queso.
This is one of those rare reviews I actually sat with for a few days before posting. I wanted to make sure I got my thoughts across clearly and fairly. I also chose not to include photos. Not because the food didn’t look good—it did—but because pictures wouldn’t really capture what my experience was about, and I didn’t want to do the place a disservice. This is strictly about my experience, value, and overall takeaway. Food-wise, the flavors were really good. The Cuban–Mexican fusion works, and everything we tried tasted well-seasoned and thoughtfully prepared. No complaints there. The service was also excellent. Our server was friendly, helpful, explained the menu well, and genuinely did a great job. That part of the experience was solid. My issue is strictly with portion size versus price. We spent about $50 on two plates and two regular drinks (this was lunch, not dinner). One plate came with half a chicken, while mine had three small pieces of pork, noticeably less rice and beans—and somehow cost more. While the plate may look full at first glance, it didn’t feel like a full plate, especially for the price point. For what we paid, I left feeling like I could’ve gone somewhere else nearby and gotten more food for the same money. The flavor is there, but the value just didn’t match. I’d consider coming back because the food and service are good, but the portion-to-price balance really needs another look. When you’re charging at that level, consistency and value matter just as much as flavor.
I came only for the Horchata. Sad to say, it doesn't taste as good as it used to. Maybe it's good for the white people around here??? Extra star for the "Large" size actually being large though. Also, they no longer have the Torta Al Pastor. ☹️ Side note: you know this place is legit ethnic food when the damn email is AOL 🤣
OK down to earth place for Cuban and Mexican favorites. The Café Cubano y el Cortadito tasted weird on this visit. Not bad, just different. May be the type of coffee they used. The ropa vieja was good and so were the fried pork chunks and the rotisserie chicken. Black beans were OK. Big serving of fried plantains with each plate and that's really good.
Food was great, service wasn't. Rude cashier through drive-thru and I had ordered the Cuban super torta- they forgot the top bun...
The food is edible but that’s about it. Doesn’t have much flavor and not memorable plates. Tried this location a couple of times and I’ve left a little disappointed. I thought one thing they would do decently is the flan but a store bought flan would have been better. If they change up their recipes I will come try them again😫 Stay was very friendly and location including restrooms were very clean
I ordered a three taco dinner. One with the Ropa Vieja, one with beef fajita, and one with chicken fajita. The beef fajita was so cold, and the meat was tasteless, the chicken one was cold, but tasty, and the Ropa Vieja was actually very tasty. I feel it was not worth the $20 for the meal. I also ordered a Topo Chico water, which was as warm as it was when you pull it out of a box. This trip was far from being satisfying and filling
The portions are very small, and they charge a lot for the plates. For that price, the portions should be more generous.
I’m just here to complain about the lack of RICE in thier portions. I spent about 17 dollars for rice chicken and beans. The rice was not even enough to feed a toddler. I get it they’re a franchise. This was my first time ever trying El Rey. I could barely finish my meal cause there wasn’t enough rice to compliment Everything else m. 2 to 3 spoonfuls and I’m finished with the rice. Such a turn off I will not pay for an extra little portion of rice if that’s what they consider a portion. This is the literal reason why I will probably never come back to this place. It’s Usually establishments like this that are very generous with rice. For a Cuban/Mexican place. I get it. It’s franchise owned and they’re never going to change anything about it. I get it but I felt disrespected when they gave me enough rice to fill a 2oz sauce cup. Tried to mention it to the front, but of course the semi on the spectrum gentleman said that he would tell the people in the back. As if that would do anything It’s the manager that needs to be aware. It’s the owners that need to have a little bit of pride in what they put out. Also, the manager on duty there from what it looks like. I didn’t like her attitude. She said that the garlic sauce was dressing… She doesn’t know the difference. That was the best thing I had a here the “garlic dressing”
Im not sure what has changed but we are very disappointed. Our full size guacamole was spoiled and brown with long onions in it and no chips. The tortas tasted old and not fresh. The soup was good as usual thankfully but everything else was disappointing. We've been coming here for years and love to support this place. We usually come a couple times a month, however the last couple visits the quality has gotten bad, today was the worst we have ever had.

PSA Taco Tuesday promotion is no longer a good deal. It used to be buy 2 tacos get your third one free. With the recent hike to $12 for the taco Tuesday promotion you’re basically paying for each taco now. Go down the road to Laredo Taqueria instead.
I ordered two tacos one cuban taco, one rotisserie chicken taco flour tortilla and they were both cold and old tortillas. The food really has no real flavor to it .This was my first and last time eating at this establishment. I thought I would try it because I live just walking distance from this place but I know now the food quality is poor and the food temperature was cold and most items are very overpriced, go somewhere else you will find better food elsewhere. Bye. The food really Sucks. Prices way out of range and I know your trying to cover your overhead but just close down and go out of business do everyone a favor.
Just because you put the Cuban Flag 🇨🇺 does not mean it’s a Cuban restaurant. I ordered the Cuban sandwich, and it’s the worst ever. No mayo, no mustard no Mayo Ketchup. (Latinos from the Caribbean will know) Then you charge nine dollars for you guys that are really not fresh. They were too cold. Just not worth it not the Cuban restaurant that you thought it would be you should change it to Mexican and Cuban not advertise the other way around.
Super expensive food for a below moderate dinning experience. To sum it up 1 plate / 1 torta / 4 tacos with no drinks, $55, wow. 1 plate alone was almost have the entire bill and they give super small portions of meat, beans and plantains.
Do yourself a favor and do not order the ropa vieja torta. I called after (eating half of my torta) and noticing little meat it had. All for the staff to tell be the torta is supposed to have 4 ounces of shredded beef. A dissatisfaction and disappointment of how this was handled. Staff told me it was because I asked for the slaw on the side that my torta looked like that compared to the fajita torta my friend ordered. A total of $30+ with Two Tortas and Two Horchatas.
Dude. I ordered three tacos at the drive through. Cuban with beef. AL pastor. Rope Veja. I got home to eat and all 3 tacos had been stuffed with random stuff. Instead of a Cuban with beer, I got rope veja meat tossed on black beans and drenched in sour cream. The other two taste rancid. Everything is freezing cold. Thus is inexcusable, and I'm never giving the company another dime.
El Rey "count your days.. I ordered the Cuban style burrito. Not only is this the wrong burrito. This Mexican style burrito is over filled with rice...where is the meat? They actually charged me extra... I paid $18 for everything I wanted, and this is how they treated their customer. The cashier smiled with delight, we started small talk and all! I can't help but feel betrayed because she confirmed that she checked our order. Also, she insisted that I could only get 1 "creamy green" sauce And that I could not purchase any extra "creamy green sauce", she insisted it was "one" creamy green sauce per customer and gave me a surplus of the sauce I didn't prefer. We still treated them nicely.. I'll never forget to double-check the bag or trust their devious smile again.
