felt like walking into a secret locals only spot. took a seat at the counter and was greeted by our server soon after. fish is fresh and the chefs are sweet.
** Important to note: this spot is cash only! ** A superb hole-in-the-wall sushi spot in Sawtelle that deserves a spot in your sushi rotation! I had walked past this spot a handful of times, but never gone in. Oh my goodness, the salmon nigiri might be the best I’ve ever had. Such buttery salmon, we had to order more before we left it was so good. The wait staff were friendly, the food was prepared quickly, and the interior was decorated nicely!
I booked a tiny chef’s counter and appreciated the personalized attention: the chef explained each piece and why it was paired with a specific sauce. Fish tasted fresh and the rice had a good balance of seasoning and temperature. It’s not cheap, but the intimacy and quality justify it for a special night. The room seats maybe a dozen, so it feels exclusive without being showy. Reservations recommended
From the moment I walked in, I felt welcomed. It was a packed house yet there was one open seat for me at the sushi bar. The sushi and sashimi were outstanding. My sushi chef was a charming fellow named Akasan (sp?). I did not feel rushed. It was a most excellent experience!!!! Best sushi I can ever remember having!!
Probably my favorite sushi restaurant on Sawtelle. All of the food is very fresh and high quality. They have a large nigiri menu and that’s what I recommend going with. Outside of that, the dynamite scallops are delicious. There is a valet parking lot, so that is a big help. My two things to make sure of when going here are 1) they will not seat your party until everyone is there 2) cash only so make sure to be prepared
Hide Sushi is one of my favorite sushi restaurants in the area. They have very good selections of sashimi and sushi, and the fishes are incredibly fresh. The service is exceptional, and the staffs are super friendly. They do have other hot dishes like Teriyaki chicken and beef as well as dynamite. This is a perfect place for date night with cozy ambiance without breaking your wallet. Quick tips: Cash only place and they have valet parking in the back of the restaurant. They also have ATM machine inside the restaurant.
A wonderful CASH ONLY local sushi spot that hits all the marks. Japanese speaking staff. The seafood is fresh, varied, and large pieces at a great price. Really liked the sweet shrimp where they fried the shrimp heads, the juicy scallops, the mackerel, the sole aka halibut, and unagi (freshwater eel). The monkfish liver was quite unique, a little like crab roe. Great nigiri set and sake. There's also a small free parking lot. The service is fast and cordial. The ambiance has a warm inviting aura.
Our best sushi experience so far in Sawtelle! Sashimi was fresh and tasty, grilled beef was tender and delicious, great tempura too! Even gave us a couple of appetizer dishes. Chef asked us for our feedback when we finished. Would definitely recommend! Complimentary guest valet parking available.
Was craving some sushi tonight so stop by after work. I wasn't disappointed at all, they have a big selection of sushi which were all soo great quality 👌 Started with Salmon Skin salad, tempura and then jump into sushi. Ordered Ika, Salmon, Tuna, Tabon Ebi, Salmon Belly, Scallop and Salmon Belly. Also ordered Mentaiko and California Roll which were also delicious. All the sushi were fresh and yummy. I had to wait for about 20 mins to seat but it was worth the wait. A server name Seika helped us and she was very helpful and super nice 👍 Will be back for sure!
Great sushi - best I’ve ever had and best value - I always go when visiting LA. Does anyone know if they reopened?!!! Please say it ain’t so!!!! Attaching photos of their incredibly fresh and delicious sushi from past visits about 10 years ago. By the way, I am a sushi “purist” (I hate Americanized Frankenstein type rolls dripping with spicy Mayo, deep fried, and that pack more calories than a Big Mac!) — you won’t find that at Hide — the sushi here is so high quality and traditional - a simple menu but everything is perfect. UPDATE: Apparently there is cause for optimism for a reopen once the pandemic peters out! Someone on Yelp yesterday claimed to have spoken with the owners who will reopen once everything is back to “100% normal” (assuming no more social distancing) so they don’t have to keep closing and opening. UPDATE: OMG I just heard they are back!!! Hallelujah (sushi is almost a spiritual experience for me). Looking forward to going back.
2024-3 visited again. Still good quality. We had a lot for two people. I am satisfied with the food quality. It’s my first time to have monkfish liver and it was pretty good. I also like urchine, eel and the white tuna. About 140 for two people including tips. Several things you need to be careful: 1. They are pretty slow on preparing food. 2. They only receive CASH. They have an ATM in the restaurant but it requires 1% service fee. 3. There is a free parking lot but you need to give them your key, because they need to move your car if needed.
In A Nutshell: -Hide Sushi is a legit sushi restaurant. -Here you'll find the OG sushi chefs who look like they've been cutting up fish for decades. -This is the type of place you want to go for healthy raw fish diet. -It's very small, but if you can get a table the service is very expedient. -I like to sit at the sushi bar to order straight from the chefs. -The size of the fish for nigiri are very big, so you don't feel like you are getting ripped off. -The fish is very fresh w/ great color too. -Their lunch tempura + chicken teriyaki special is a nice deal, their tempura was really, really good. Overall, I enjoyed my meal at Hide Sushi!
Customer service was great, everyone was super friendly and attentive. But the sushi itself was pretty underwhelming for me. I’ve never seen portions that small, and the flavors were just a little plain. It wasn’t bad, just not great, and definitely not what I expected for the price. Overall, good service but the sushi needs improvement.
Customer service was great! The sushi was not. Quality over quantity. The sushi cuts were tremendously thick and the rice under each sashimi piece was a mountain. I couldn’t taste the fish as I was getting smacked with the large amounts of wasabi under each sashimi piece. The spicy tuna hand rolls were the same just large portions with lack of flavor very disappointed. Had high end and mid end cuts. Had to take home the hand rolls as I couldn’t stomach it!
I am local to the area but I think they must have thought I was a tourist. I saw beautiful fresh sushi and the tables around me and when my food was served it was old looking dry and the fishy taste lingered in my mouth the rest of my evening. I didn’t want to be rude so I forced the tuna and salmon down but had the busser take the rest (I have never sent food back or complained at a restaurant in my life and this review is the first negative thing I have ever expressed) I thought about ordering something else but before I could they put the bill on the table. I said I’d like to order dessert and they said I wouldn’t like it so I just paid and left. I was so disappointed and disgusted with the roe that was shriveling the way old blueberries would. I was expecting to find a new favorite place near home with an authentic experience and unfortunately I am instead writing this review, also a first but it was that bad. I will stick to sushi in East LA or head north. My mistake for going in first place.
