Opinions de Tam O'Shanter Los Angeles
Stepping into Tam O’Shanter feels like walking straight into a storybook version of old Los Angeles. Open since 1922 and part of the legendary Lawry’s Restaurants family, this charming Scottish inn has managed to preserve a kind of magical, slightly kitschy nostalgia that is increasingly rare in LA. The moment you walk in, you’re surrounded by tartans, dark wood beams, and cozy nooks that feel like they belong in a Highland pub—or perhaps in a Disney film. That connection isn’t accidental. Walt Disney was a regular here when the nearby Disney studio was in its early days, and there’s even a special table where he and his animators frequently dined. You can reserve it for a prix fixe experience, which makes the whole evening feel like a little piece of Hollywood history. We visited on January 7th and were thrilled to find the restaurant still beautifully decorated for the holidays. The twinkling lights and festive décor made the whole place feel extra cozy and nostalgic. We opted for the holiday prix fixe meal. My husband ordered the trout meunière and thoroughly enjoyed it. I went with the holiday turkey platter—turkey, gravy, stuffing, cranberry, and vegetables—classic comfort food that felt perfect for the season and was absolutely delicious. Because this is a Lawry’s restaurant, and prime rib is what they’re known for, I couldn’t resist adding a slice to the meal. It absolutely lived up to its reputation—rich, tender, and the perfect indulgent addition. We didn’t have cocktails this time, but the bar menu immediately caught our attention, especially their impressive whiskey and bourbon collection. My husband was already planning a return visit before we even left so he can explore it properly. Places like Tam O’Shanter are special. It’s nostalgic, a little whimsical, and filled with the kind of character that makes you feel like you’ve discovered a living piece of old LA. We loved every minute of it and can’t wait to go back—next time for the bar menu and maybe even that famous Disney table.
We had a fabulous time. The Walt Disney history is so cool. We were told he used to come here almost every day. His studio was just down the way at one point. It is totally charming and definitely worth the visit. You'll want to come back!
Tam O'Shanter isn't just legendary for being one of Walt Disney's old haunts (they even have a plaque at his favorite booth). It's legendary for it's immersive atmosphere, which needs little imagination to understand Walt's fascination with the place. It takes its name from Robert Burns's 18th century poem telling the story of drunken farmer riding home from the pub. Tam stumbles upon a church of witches, warlocks, and the Devil playing bagpipes. They give chase until Tam crosses the River Doon, impassable for evil creatures, and escapes with his life. The restaurant really leans into this Scottish tale with an old cottage feel with exposed beams, low lighting, and stained/bottle glass windows. There are paintings and portraits of British folk, framed tartan (plaid) pair with its clan name, long stemmed pipes and tankards, flags, crests, and all sorts of paraphernalia. There is even a painting of Tam O'Shanter himself. The bar area has its own scaled down menu and has open seating. The restaurant proper requires reservations. The serves are fast and friendly across the board. The food is pricey but worth it (you'll likely need a to-go box). The drinks are tasty as well, but not too boozy. Over all, if you love British history & literature, good food, and drinks, Tam O'Shanter will charm your socks off.
Great old world pub feel, like stepping back in time. Absolutely loved our dining experience. The Toad in the Hole was amazing as was the Tam o'Shanter cut Prime Rib.
This was fantastic! The outside was still decorated from the Holidays and there was a lovely fire 🔥 in the fireplace! Food was good! The French Onion Soup not so much ...
I had the fish and chips from the pub menu. Now I'm not a big seafood eater but I do like it. Anyway, the cod was just a bit fishy in taste, but over all pretty good. The Old Fashions were the bomb. The night we were there was when they celebrated Robert Burns and his ode to haggis...a delightful evening.
We booked a reservation for Walt's favorite table here at the Tam O'Shanter and the food/experience was the best! We enjoyed the hearing about the history and ate some really good food! If you are a Disney fan, or in the mood for some prime rib, this is the restaurant for you!
I hadn't been to Tam O' Shanter in probably 30 years. I love it here. It's well over 100 years old but kept up nicely. It's dark inside which I love and is reminiscent of an old world Scottish tavern. Delicious food. My husband and I were there on a Tuesday mid day, so it was our lunch/dinner. We ordered the brisket burnt ends served with BBQ sauce, the prime rib sandwich and an order of the fries with fried cheese curds. All delicious and great portions. Also, the sticky pudding dessert Ala mode was scrumptious. Our server was friendly and very helpful. This a great place to bring friends or hang out at the bar for fun conversation and good food. We left very full and happy!
We were hesitant to return because at our previous visit, the food and service were very disappointing; however, we decided to give it one more try and are so glad that we did! Tony was a fantastic waiter who went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed the delicious food and experienced the wonderful hospitality that this restaurant has built its reputation upon. Today we were offered bread and butter, the prime rib was cooked perfectly, our drinks refilled before we had to ask, and he brought us a free trifle, even though it wasn't a special occasion! (The "doggy bag" was even better quality.) Thanks to Tony we will continue to patronize the Tam and hope he is recognized for "saving the day!" Countess Yola
We had the prime rib dinner, it was excellent! The bread roll was a little uncooked inside, but it was edible, that's a tic I have with undercooked breads. The prime rib, medium rare, was done just right, I might get it more medium next time. It wasn't full of fat but had enough to add great flavors. The drinks were not watered down, and of a generous size. The history on the walls, and ceiling, everywhere, was very interesting to read and study. The lighting was just right, not dark but not bright and overwhelming, very soft. All the staff are friendly and very courteous. $9.50 for valet parking. I enjoyed being able to have conversations with the other friends at my table and not being overwhelmed by blaring music that some restaurants play. They do not rush you in and rush you out, they allow you to spend your time there and enjoy the atmosphere. Kids friendly and they also enjoyed it. Definitely a place to put in your must go book.
Had a great dinner and evening on a tuesday. Was PACKED. still recieved great service! Prime rib was EXCELLENT. hot fudge sunday was a great treat. Pricey but PERFECT outing for a date or family if you can afford it. Highly recommend. If you get a steak make sure you order it one level above the cook that you want. For example if you want a rare steak order it medium rare, they tend to cook it lighter. Reservation highly recommended
This place was decent. I had heard of this place somehow someway, I can't remember how. Anyhow, the place had a great atmosphere. Food was decent and price was what I expected. I had the Tam O'Shanter cut with spinach and mashed potatoes. It was delicious. I think it was a little more than the 10oz but it also had the bone. Either way, good place for a date night or just for decent food and atmosphere. Would go again if in the area.
What an amazing experience! We requested table 35 where we were told Walt and Lillian, Disney used to have their private dinners. They started with sourdough bread; very crispy crust super soft inside. My husband ordered the prime rib and loved it! I ordered the roast chicken. It was also fabulous, and it came rather quickly. Service was good and the atmosphere in the restaurant was just super cool. If you go check out the photos and memorabilia in the lobby before you are seated.
Amazing place! I've lived here all my life and never came here until today. I brought my 76 year old dad here for his birthday and unfortunately we didn't have reservations. Donna went out of her way to somehow squeeze us in and it was one of the best birthday dinners ever! We've gone to the Smokehouse forever and this place was not only better atmosphere-wise but the food and service is far superior. We will most definitely be coming back! Highly recommend.
We did the Table 31 Experience! So great and was to much food. We had the Bacon wrapped Dates, deviled eggs, Wedge Salad, Chilli (amazing!!!) and the Walt's Favorite Burger and fries. We also had one of each of the dessert. So much food. And our waitress was super sweet she had lots of information about the history of the table.
For anyone interested in early Disney history, I would absolutely recommend the Table 31 experience. The first impression of Tam O'Shanter feels like a fairy tale cottage. High gables, old wood, thatched textures, huge fireplaces, flags, weapons adorning the walls. We were seated, and our server was very friendly and knowledgeable, walking us through the 4 courses with little bits of history and trivia throughout. The food itself was decent, if a bit underwhelming or basic, with the exception of the prime rib. Most steak house steaks disappoint me, but the prime rib roast here was genuinely one of the better cuts I've ever had at an establishment like this. Absolutely delicious. If the Walt Disney history isn't enough, this is also the first restaurant opened by the Lawry company, later of the seasoned salt empire. So much history under one roof, and you can taste it. We will definitely be going back to check out the standard menu.
I've been meaning to come to the Tam O'Shanter for years and finally made it! This is the type of quirky place that you just have to give 5 stars just due to the fact that there's nothing else like it! You have to visit at least once! I would recommend the room with the flags! The food was good, but I will say it's for sure overpriced for what you get... but I think that's just part of the price you pay for the experience. It made me want to give this a 4 star review... but when you factor in the experience... I think you have to give it five. It's ALL about ambiance here. The pictures do it more justice than anything else. Also... they have a GIANT collection of rare bourbons, scotches, and other types of drinks... so much so that there is a QR code because you can't possibly fit it all into a menu (I think they said they have 700 rare bourbons)!!! We enjoyed the Prime Rib, which again... was good but maybe a bit disappointing for the price. I've had a lot better for a lot less. The creamed spinach were fantastic and actually the garden veggie blend was REALLY good! The service was really good too. Our waitress was great and we were encouraged to walk around and take in the different rooms. You can't leave LA without experiencing Tam O'Shanter at least once! Places like this have been dying away and I hope it has a long life ahead of it!
Stopped in for lunch, and had a wonderful time. The staff was attentive and fast, and the food was top notch, one of the very few places that serves rarebit! That said, I would have loved to see more traditional dishes, pasties, meat pies, etc. The atmosphere is lovely, dark and with tons of details. You can hear yourself think in there. Highly recommended!
Fantastic gem and historic location with casual elegance. Parking is limited, But they do have a small lot, which is covered by Valet Service for dinner. Menu is varied, but high quality that leans into rich old Hollywood history of location. Much of it is comfort food done well. Large rustic outdoor patio, ample bar area inside, and dining rooms are carved up in such a way to make the location feel more intimate. Service is good and usually familiar enough with the history to tell the stories about where you are sitting or what you are ordering. Don't miss the experience.
If you’re craving prime rib, this is the place to get it. They have a great selection of different types of prime rib to choose from, like the traditional or thin cut. They have a sides are well made, and the ambiance is perfect. They also offer a good selection of drinks in addition to their wine list. Dress code is business casual and they offer valet parking. It’s best to make a reservation in advance. This is a sister restaurant to Lawry’s in Beverly Hills.

Perfectly cooked prime rib and the creamed spinach was a wonderful surprise. Service was wonderful and friendly with Melissa.
Our 2nd time here and love the history and character of this place. We didn’t get the Walt Disney table as requested unfortunately. Food was good, but not great. We go to Laqry’s quite a bit and hard not to make the comparison. Our prime rib was tasty but a little under cooked and corn didn’t seem as fresh as we’re used to. Not terrible by any means, but when you get served off of a giant cart I guess the food will be fresher and on point temperature wise. Other items were delicious, like the mashed potatoes, Caesar salad and shrimp cocktail. We are a little closer to Tam than to Lawry’s so will keep in rotation, but will try non Lawry’s items next time, like the corned beef and cabbage :) Don’t sleep on the soufflé. Very much the surprise of the night!
Ambiance is really cool with some interesting history since it's been there for 100+ years. To be fair I'm not a prime rib lover but my fiancée is. She gave it 5/5, I'd give it 4/5.

I got the Tam O'Shanter prime rib, was probably the blandest tasting prime rib I've ever had. It tasted like I had COVID there was nothing there. My wife got the shepherds pie, which wasn't a shepherds pie but a cottage pie. It was also very underwhelming. The decor and theme of the restaurant looked pretty cool, but unfortunately the food quality was so bad that we would never be back

We ordered our thanksgiving Prime Rib this year, like we have the past 4 years. Previous years were excellent. This year was not great at all. The to go order left out the Yorkshire pudding which was something we all looked forward to. The main problem was that the prime rib was really really fatty: to the point of being pretty much non-edible. Guests mentioned it and I was embarrassed to say the least. I took pictures because I was so disappointed and wanted to be sure I was not crazy. There truly was so much fat that you had to cut away just to find a bite of meat. To be fair, I believe you need to know so that you can have better quality control with your meat buyer. Sandy Markus-Litvak
