A friend and I were passing through town and decided to stop by for lunch; no regrets! The smell from outside was enticing, and we weren’t disappointed. The staff were professional yet friendly, and the food was nommalicious. Don't expect high-end cuisine, but rather a family friendly / bring the buds and watch the game kind of vibe. I would absolutely stop here again!
I had the bear pit make me my Christmas dinner for 20 people. I have recommended them to everyone. They are the best when it comes to brisket.
Our for sure family stop by when we visit the valley from the antelope valley. Bbq beef sandwich on the famous garlic toast cheese bread, side of bbq beans and hot french fries... yeah im hungry again!!!! Can't wait to come back to this savory sandwich!!!
Was visiting from out of state use to go there all the time whenI lived in California. Was as good as I remember. . Got the beef sandwich with swee sauce on garlic toast. So yummy. Fries could be a little better. Excellent service too.
Classic BBQ done right! The ribs are tender, smoky, and full of flavor. The service is fast, and the portions are huge. The old-school vibe gives it character. Definitely worth the trip if you love BBQ.
We initially stopped at cocos for a late breakfast early lunch but there was a pretty long wait. As we were walking up we smelled some delicious BBQ and decided to eat here instead. We ordered the ribs and chicken combo, I definitely liked the ribs better but the chicken was still pretty tasty. We also ordered the Cub burger which was a pretty large size for a kids meal, also very good. We got onion rings, fries, coleslaw, baked beans, and an order of pickles, all delicious! And we also got a slice of the tuxedo cake with our coffee. Everything was very good and I am happy we came here instead of Coco's! Our server was also very nice!
Review for March 2nd 2022. The Bear Pit Barbecue Restaurant is located in the heart of the Mission Hills California. It's in the Los Angeles County within the San Fernando Valley. Adjacent to the 118 freeway and Sepulveda Boulevard. Let me start off by saying that I absolutely appreciate the customer service. It goes without saying that the barbecue ribs here are absolutely to die for. I'm not guilty, to say that I love BBQ ribs. Thank you so much for the attention to service that you guys provide and all the great quality food that you have. Also perfect spot for a coffee with your lunch.
The Bear Pit is something my wife has talked about for years, we finally got a chance the visit it tonight. Food was great, wife had a lamb sandwich and loved it. I had a huge sample platter, with beef and pork short ribs plus sliced beef and ham. It was fantastic. The ribs are not coated with rub or sauced but they give you alot of sauce to apply as you wish.

It's hard to find old school BBQ places like this anymore. Most of the Chris 'n Pitts places are gone and places like the Bear Pit are far and few between. The baby back ribs were tender and tasty, and I love their barbeque beans! It isn't cheap, but you get what you pay for. Great place!!
Really good food! I just have very high standards........( most would probably give 5 stars) My lunch was great, ate every bite. To me, just a bit too sweet. The BBQ beans, & sweet BBQ sauce were a bit over the top for me. However; the regular flavored BBQ sauce just lacked in flavor. The garlic toast is AMAZING! Got it with my brisket sandwich. The best $0.75 I've ever spent. If you like wood smoked BBQ......... this place is worth your time!

The phone service is generally OK haven't eaten inside in a while but overall they do a decent job. Sometimes the meat is dry if I give it a scale between one and 10 I wanna say 7 1/2.
I went today and except for take out the restaurant parking lot was empty and I didn't want take out so I left. I'm guessing they are remodeling but I'm not sure. Call before you try to go there fo…

2024 Update: Under new ownership. The food tasted a little better this time. The Kodiak with brisket sandwich and spare ribs was the perfect size for two adults to share. But the ribs were still dry and over cooked for my liking. No meat falling off the bone here. 2018: An old relic from my childhood, but not the same Bear Pit I remember as a kid. It's been cleaned up a bit, which sadly, means no more sawdust covered floors :( The food was just meh... Pork sandwich was dry and spare ribs barely had any meat on them. BBQ beans were pretty tasty though.
I was brought here by someone who had fond memories of this place and they have been waiting for years to bring me. Let's just get into the good, bad, and everything in between.\n\nThere is plenty …
raditional AMERICAN BBQ cuisine which leaves plenty to be desired. The place is properly decorated to resemble a bear pit, with pictures of bears everywhere. Not my favorite, but it works for the place. It was my first time and my friend, who recommended the spot, wanted to order her favorites for me. You are given pickles, celery and carrots as a free appetizer as you wait for your food. We had Turkey sandwiches on garlic bread, chilli, sausages, macaroni and cheese, baked beans and iced tea. Before I even get to the food, I must say the place was empty and near closing so I feel like our food wasn't freshly made, especially the garlic bread, so this significantly contributed to the food quality and overall experience. The macaroni was just awful and overcooked. Think mushy cheese. The Turkey sandwich was bland and the hard garlic bread didn't do it any favors either. I surprisingly liked the chilli, which had a smoked thing going for it, and the sausage was pretty good as well. After being disappointed with the food I nearly lost my mind when the $90 bill arrived. I DO NOT comprehend the cost associated to such lackluster food. Our server was tired and cleaning up so we had to wait a bit to track her down. This was a little disappointing as the food was pretty cold to begin with. I must say that the hostess and the server were nice people, and I APPRECIATE that tremendously. Overall, this was my first and definitely my last time eating there. I had high expectations and left with bubblegut. Definitely not worth the money or sacrifice of tastebuds.
The food was horrible!! Dry chicken and ribs, the little potatoes were supposed to be crunchy and were soggy and had no seasoning. The Cole slaw had too many celery seeds and the Mac and cheese was…

My family and I have been going to the Bear Pit for over 40 years. It used to be so good. The last few visits have been a bit disappointing, but we decided to give it one last try. BIG MISTAKE! O…
What a disappointment. I ordered a 1/2 lb burger and all you get is meat and bread for $21.00 I asked the waitress about lettuce, tomato and pickle said it doesn't come with that, it was my job to ask for it. The burger does come with cheese however the waitress asked if I wanted cheese like it was extra charge. So bottom line it was not a good dining experience.
I do apologize in advance if this review doesn't feel good, but being from Kansas City, Missouri I feel obliged to speak up after trying the shredded pork on garlic bread with coleslaw, baked beans and a mini carrot with a side of their sauce. I told the buyer and flyer that if they didn't have any burnt ends I was gonna pass, but they brought me the aforementioned in a well secured plastic to go container entirely unmindful of the fact that I am a native KCMO Chiefs fan and smoked a brisket for the 4th of July all day and can't brag enough about how we do BBQ. And you folks out here in SO CAL don't know any better but The Bear Pit should, and therefore ought to be ashamed of themselves for claiming their BBQ is anything like how the folks in Missouri do it, and do it regularly in their own back yards, at the American Royal, at Gates and Sons, Arthur Bryant's, Jack Stacks, and Joes KC BBQ to name just a few. We don't stand up when the east coast is craving Philly Cheese steak Sandwiches, or Brooklyn Style Pepperoni Pizza because we KNOW better but I take it The Bear Pit assumed they were a safe enough distance from Missouri for anybody to call them out on thier B.S. (and that doesn't stand for Barbeque Sandwiches but it might as well.) I can't even believe that the pork in my sandwich was smoked. Was suspect from the start when they failed to provide burnt ends off a smoked brisket on the menu. The garlic bread left me scratching my head until a very unflavorful bite explained everything except why the red stuff in the to go cup is perpetrated as barbeque sauce. If you know, you know. If you don't, it's not your fault and it's just wrong. I will put my life's savings on the present owner having NEVER stepped foot in Missouri. SoCal's got Baja Tacos, Sunshine, Sand, Newsom and traffic jams-they don't care about what they don't have and it's okay. Bear Pit- We live in the Woke ages now. That means your in the right place at the wrong time.
