Excellent Food. Excellent Drinks. Excellent Service. Excellent Prices. Found this gem on a whim passing town and I loved the authentic decor and music. I ordered the Ribeye and it was cooked perfectly and the sides and sauce were amazing. Definitely with be back.

La Charla is amazingly authentic and consistently delicious! The staff, but most of all, Pepe, the manager is so kind and professional... He makes the most delicious guacamole, margaritas, and always has a smile 😃 on his face... lots of parking in the lot behind!!! 👍🏼😋

Excellent food (upscale Mexican fare). Tortillas handmade right next to us made such a difference. Only gripe was that I only ate half of my costillas (short ribs), which were delicious in a seriously flavorful sauce, and asked to have it prepped to go. When I got home, the remaining meat from the costillas was all there, but without ANY of the sauce, which I had purposefully left half of to fully enjoy at home. I can only assume this happened because the wait staff maybe just didn't understand the dish, which they should. But they were very nice and we were otherwise tended to very well. It's more expensive than the Mexican food we usually go for, but it was a nice treat and definitely worth the money. Will go again if ever in the area.

La Charla- your hot sauce was so good- you should serve it on the side with all of your orders, so people know about it! We went there lastnight, because the outdoor seating sidewalk was spacious enough for us to feel comfortable- we don't feel comfortable right now with Covid in alot of restaurant spaces, despite them being outdoor. The food was very good, as was the service. We ordered a shrimp quesadilla and the baja fish tacos. Taco orders have 4 tacos instead of 3, which was good for the two of us. We also ordered the grasshopper tacos, which were good with sauce on them, but are an acquired taste I think. *Ask for the hot sauce- it's sooo good, very unique, and has a gentle heat that's medium and not intense. The drinks are good too!

Menu is good for all palates from mild to adventurous. Spice level is geared to white people but talk to your server because they're very accomodating. The grasshopper tacos are delicious and also bursting with avocado. Tasty red sangria and good desserts too.

Oh my god DELICIOUS! Their margs are tasty and strong, and their birria Thursday’s are phenomenal. It took everything in me not to devour the whole plate in 30 seconds. I highly recommend!!

This charmingly appointed Oaxacan-themed Mexican restaurant is one of the more upscale offerings in downtown New Paltz. Hardwood is everywhere, giving the place a charming rustic look. The large and beautiful bar offers over a dozen Tequilas, along with a full complement of liquors. Staff is very friendly and attentive; they seem to genuinely enjoy working there. Try the chicharrone tacos for perhaps the most unique dish in town.

My wife took me to La Charla, a Oaxacan Mexican restaurant, for my birthday last week and we enjoyed a fantastic meal and service! From "soup to nuts" every course was top shelf. While we don't consider ourselves "foodies", we know a great meal when we have one (and it's rare, even at far more expensive restaurants in NYC, for example). I began with a delicious raspberry margarita large enough to bathe in. La Charla's ceviche is spicy superb. And the savory chicken molê is to live for! Presented perfectly grilled, slightly blackened and moist inside, the dish is appropriately served piping hot with a picante peanut - chocolate sauce that I spooned up like dessert. Speaking of dessert, the caramel flan melted in my mouth, a perfect ending to a perfect meal.

Visited here last night with my boyfriend, a must go! It was taco Tuesday so they had a great $11 for four tacos special( I got shrimp)! The guac,salsa,ellote were also great 😊

Picked this place randomly from google while driving on 87 based purely on google star rating, and boy is it good. The enchiladas mole are delicious, and the homemade guac is excellent (not spicy so ask for spicy if thats your bag). Service was delightful. If I ever come back to New Palz, I will be returning.

We had a party of 15 and they were able to accomodate us within a couple days. The food was incredible, service was outstanding, and the waiter was the best! Thank you all for a wonderful evening and we can't wait to come back next time we are in the area.

Food was absolutely phenomenal. I got the spicy peanut mole chicken, I've never had anything like it. Flan and elote were perfection. Excited to try the rest of rhe menu.

This is some amazing authentic Mexican food. The detail put in to the food here is phenomenal. Table side guacamole, hand made chips and tortillas, freshly made queso fresco, literal heaven. The prices are high but the food is deserving. This is not a place for a cheap greasy taco, no, this is a sit-down restaurant with fine food. I'm glad they opened. They have a full large bar with wonderful cocktails and specials, fine wine and beer. They are new in town as of writing this, and although there were some kinks at my last visit with the server, what really won me over is that the manager and the owner both were on site talking to guests, correcting mistakes and paying attention to detail. You can tell that they expect a high standard and will work hard to achieve that. I'm proud to have La Charla in my town and give it my highest regards.

Best Mexican in NP, not even close. Best guacamole in 100 miles. Pepe is awesome and makes everyone feel welcome. Pro tip, I find the margs a little weak but the Michelada is super tasty. Also strong nod for all burritos, the enchiladas nortenas, and the soups!

Amazing food and service at La Charla. My family and I had stopped at this gem previously while visiting our daughter at the campus. We enjoyed the drinks and each meal including camarones a la diabla, huarache, burrito, and chamorro. The meat was so tender and exquisitely delicious. We enjoyed the food so much we went back a 2nd time at our next visit. This time we were greeted and served by the owner herself. She was the sweetest and took such great care in ensuring our food and drinks were perfect. We enjoyed the guacamole with a side of chapulines. My husband's rib was perfectly cooked and falling off the bone. My dish, Tampiquena Brava, was absolute perfection. My daughter enjoyed her torta de milanesa while adding guacamole and chapulines. My other daughter's devoured their enchiladas de mole and shrimp fajita. Dessert was also impeccable with the flan and churro basket. Eating at La Charla will definitely be a tradition for us whenever we are at New Paltz!

So much to say about this place. Cozy Ambiance, friendly staff, amazing drinks. The food is unique and delicious. Our favorite go to for a great margarita and table side guacamole. I’m gluten free and there are so many choices.

Ceviche was over the moon yummy. Tacos and entrees were cooked to perfection. Delicious cocktails and staff super friendly. A bit pricey but still a good value. Need to have more servers as at times we were waiting but overall can’t wait to go back.

The food was great and presented beautifully... Nice vegetarian options. Beet salad was so good...needed more beets. The waiter was very happy to bring me a whole bowl of beets on the side. He wrapped to go package very nicely! These little touches go a long way!

Went for dinner with coworkers. We all had tacos, chicken, Carne Asad, and pork. The service was a bit slow, however they only had 2 servers and they were packed. The young lady Jillian was great and very helpful.

I’ve came here multiple times with my partner and friends, and I can say it has been a 10/10 experience!! Pepe has made every single one of my visits amazing, Margaritas are always made with love !

Staff is nice, food is good, drinks are good, prices are great, especially during happy hour. Spent a lot tho because it was a group of us (hence the review money price being up).

Yum, yum, yum! Authentic Mexican food. Clean. Great staff and owner. Handmade corn tortillas. Mostly gluten free menu items. Decorated with custom tiles, glasses, the works from Mexico. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the prices were typical restaurant prices and not like your favorite taco joint prices.

The food is good but this last visit wasn't as impressive. It's Taco Tuesday! We showed up an hour AFTER they opened and they still didn't have the steak ready for steak tacos. The other meat was good but we really just wanted the steak ones. No excuse for not having it ready in my opinion. There were only 2 tables being occupied at the time we went so it's not like they were busy.

Great food, nice people. My only gripe is that it gets busy from time to time and chips and salsa are not included with the meal. It's like $3 more.

Very generous serving sizes. Menu apparently includes locally unusual yet authentic popular recipes from Mexico. It's a good place to visit if you have an adventurous pallet. Of course it also offers plenty of "normal" Spanish/American entrees.

The food is quite good. Service was slow but there is only one waitress for the whole room and she did her best. My complaint was the tip situation. Keep an eye out for the added service fee. The service fee was added maybe because we had a group of six, which is reasonable, but there are 2 opportunities for you to tip an additional amount on top of the amount WITH the tip already added. Our bill was 250. They added 20% so it was around 300. On the Check there was 10 15 and 20% that you could add on top of the 300. Which of course is the amount with the service fee already added, so you would be tipping on top of the tip Then when I paid with the credit card, they brought an iPad out and the iPad had the $300 amount with the 10, 15 and 20% option, so you get a second chance to tip on top of the total amount for the food and the service charge. I think a lot of people don’t pay that close attention when they’re out with their friends and a big group and they probably get some extra tips as a result. I’ve just never seen anything quite like that.

This is my first time eating here and I will say I am planning on coming back. I did takeout and it was empty since they just opened. The server at the bar I think his name was Pepe-loved his energy he was super cool and sweet. I got the Baja tacos, Elote, lemonade and guacamole with chips. The food was good but I felt like the fish in the tacos could use more seasoning. It wasn’t terrible but I don’t think I would get it again unless the recipe changes. Everything else was good and fresh. It was also beautiful inside the decorations and set up was really cute.

Not bad. Not awesome. Good was fairly good, service was a little lacking. Atmosphere is a little brightIy lit for my tastes - more like a fast food place than what I'd expected. Background music seemed a little loud. I enjoyed trying the grasshopper tacos. I'd say middle of the road in terms of the overall experience.

The staff could not have been nicer or more helpful. We both enjoyed our meals. Good mexican food for a good price. Loved the atmosphere. Good energy for sure.

For my bday. I wanted a dessert and a drink. I went with a coconut margarita and a tres leches cake. It’s bright and open. There are booths, tables and seats at the bar. The drink was lovely, the cake was moist and delicious. My server was attentive and a native Spanish speaker. I would recommend and I hope to return for an entree.

I stopped in for taco Tuesday to try this spot. We were seated immediately and service was on point and courteous. We ordered the chips and salsa to start with and those were great. Fresh, warm, and lightly salted chips. Salsa was thick and a tad salty, so we didn't need to dip a ton. The amount of salsa to chips ratio was great. In addition to that we ordered the Baja fish tacos and the birria beef tacos. The fish tacos were nice but only came with a tiny container of salsa. We weren't a huge fan of the tortillas they used. Not sure if they were old or fresh and not our type. The birria tacos came with a beefy thick sauce that was overly salty. It was difficult to eat or dip the tacos in. There was also a small container of what seemed like a spicy bean dip. I had a really nice kick, but the fact that it was more bean based threw things off. The beef wasn't as tender as I'd prefer and had more chew. I wish there were more balance with tomatoes, cilantro, onions, peppers, etc. But maybe that's just how the Oaxaca style is and I'm unaware. Overall, if I come back it'll be for drinks, chips and salsa, and not necessarily the tacos we ordered. Chicken might be the better option.

We stopped by there for some mexican on our way to New Paltz Started with drinks, their Margaritas were really awesome, we loved it. But the service was quite slow even when the place was almost empty. Food wise, we ordered Tacos and it was good , i took the chicken ones which i felt was too dry, but their authentic beef ones was very nice also the shrimp ones. We waited long for cheque too, probably he forgot so wasted quite a time.

Food was pretty good and the atmosphere and service was very good. Oddly expensive for some things that would be complimentary at the vast majority of Mexican restaurants. Tacos were relatively normal priced, same with quesadilla, nachos and drinks but you have to pay $4 to get chips and salsa for the table and an extra $4 to add refried beans to a $14 enchilada. Rice came with the enchilada but most places serve beans with it for no additional cost. Menu not descriptive at all but the food was pretty good so I gave 4/5

Very disappointing. Upscale setting and prices, but disappointing food. The meat in the taco was dry and tasteless. But the owners seem to care, so perhaps they will improve over time. For now, go to Mexican Kitchen down the street for better food at wholly reasonable price.

While I do not dissuade anyone from coming here themselves to validate my claims or perhaps their own experiences. If you are someone looking for explosive and complex flavor, I do not think you'll find it here. The food while plated and presented professionally and the staff amazing and friendly, have a lack luster choice of food which one would argue means they are specialized in what they do make, I saw no significant flavor profile in any of the food sampled. The dish was cooked competently and well but it does not make up for a lacking flavor profile. If you are coming for drinks, then by all means but if you wanting something of substance and flavor I'd recommend elsewhere.

Just another American version of Mexican Food. Very Bland. Store bought Tortillas! No sides. They charge for chips and salsa. Not even excited about thos place. Will not be coming back. There are much better "Mexican" Restaurants out there.

Just wish the food was a bit better and service was mediocre at best. Loved the bartender, but the waitress was not very personable and gone for long periods of time. Had to go to bar myself for another drink.

The food was delicious when we finally got it, but the service here is incredibly slow. We walked in at 4:30 on a Saturday afternoon. There were only 2 other tables, but somehow we waited for over an hour for our food. I have no idea whether it’s the kitchen is slow, or the waitstaff, but I will say our waitress often disappeared for long stretches of time. The place was never full the entire time we were there. If it were busy we would have been more understanding, but this was a joke.

It's ok. Food fine. My chile rellenos tasted like freezer. But the guacamole was delicious. Service failed to tell us about happy hour when we sat down..only told us after we order a few drinks. I think it was because someone overheard them talking about happy hour to another table. Overall it was fine, I would eat here again.

Nice ambiance. Nice staff. Food is a bit flavorless and dry. Have eaten there maybe 4 times and it seems to be getting less good over time. Vegan options are just not flavorful. Tres leches cake was just not good at all. There IS a way to make delicious food that doesn't fight you. La Charla may have lost some of its mojo in the past few years.

Nice new Designer Mexican on Main St. So my buddy Mike asked me if I wanted to take a chance on this brand new place that's been open for a week. The decor was real pretty the ambience very nice, lots of decorative ceramic tile, warm, and very well lit. Our server was just as new as the restaurant, but also very nice, a kid named Carlos. We were brought chips and salsa, like most Mexican restaurants. The Aztec soup I ordered was good, but big on cheese and low on other ingredients like the avocado. The surprise came with the Chile Relleno I ordered which came on a fancy plate as a presentation with sauce poured as a display. But where was my rice and beans? There is none I was informed. It costs extra, do you want it now? No thanks, by the time I get it my food will be cold. My friends who ordered the enchiladas got the same disappointment, just enchiladas, no rice and beans. So none of the dishes come with the usual rice and beans, a Mexican staple. My suggestion would be to make this crystal clear on the Menu, as I was told "other people have asked" Of course they have! Really beautiful place, and I'm sure they will have great success as they iron out the "bugs" so to speak. I wouldn't hesitate to go back as the food was good, just be prepared to spend a little more than you thought if you want "typical" Mexican.

Great food! The place feels artsy, comfortable and great ambiance. Wall art is amazing. Definitely worth going in for the look and the color authentic Mexican food. However the waitstaff need to show more attention to their guests. I feel that they might have been short staffed but it felt neglected. Would I go back yes! Always able to give a spot a second shot!

The first Mexican restaurant I've been that doesn't provide free chips, and left me hungry with a main dish. A $24 Camarones a la Diabla comes with only 5 shrimps, a sadly few slices of avocado and tiny bowl of rice in a huge open plate! Other dishes are small as well. A Mexican restaurant with dishes not with regular Mexican portion.

We got here around lunch time. There were only 2 other tables. We ordered our food and a margarita. The drink was watered down and took about 15 min to get to us. Our dinner came out seperatly. My dates dinner came out first, and then after about 5 min the kid, food runner, brought my plate to another table. Then the person told him that's not what they ordered. So my plate was on their table for a min, then was brought directly to our table. No apologies or anything offered. I think it's rediculous when there's only 3 tables during lunch, and the staff can't figure out what goes where. The food itself was delicious, and the ambience is nice inside, and is why I gave it 2 stars. I would never come back here for their overpriced water down drinks. The service here was bad all around!! So if you wanna try thier food, i would suggest to do a takeout.

I was here when it first opened and then again recently. I agree with another reviewer that the portions are small, the food is bland and they charge more than what it is worth. Our last visit there (8 adults), the customer service was terrible. The server would never follow up and he constantly needed reminders for things that were already asked for. Upon asking for a second round of chips and salsa, we were told we now must pay $1 for every round after the first one. I guess we weren't as lucky as the 2-person party next to us that didn't need another round because it was only the 2 of them. I gave it 2 stars because the ambiance is nice and it's really tastefully done inside. Maybe I would've given it more stars if I had drank more but I couldn't find the server...

Disappointed to say the least! The food was meh, and the service was so slow. Other people seated after us were served their appetizer and main dish before we ever got our appetizer. We had to ask another server for our utensils, as well as bringing our appetizers. We do not recommend, save your time and money , go elsewhere.

The food was exactly how cartoon movies depict expensive food. The price was high and the amount was low. I ended up paying $28 for an 8oz cut of skirt steak. I understand that steak can be expensive but I wouldn't pay $28 for what I got again. My friend ordered the tacos and the entree ones are barely enough to call it an appetizer even though it's an entree. My other friend ordered the enchiladas and it comes with 3 of them. They are small, expensive, and bland. Not sure about the rest of the menu but I won't be finding out. Not to say this place doesn't have good qualities. Service it great and everyone is very friendly. The restaurant itself is nice and they give you free refills for sodas. They also will accommodate anyone with an allergy in anyway that they can. That being said, people with dairy and gluten allergies should probably look for somewhere else to go. All in all, there are better restaurants in New Paltz. But if you still want to go here then prepare your wallet.

My enchiladas with mole sauce looked amazing but were undercooked and bland. The other 5 entrees my party ordered had mixed reviews, some good and some bad. The service was worse than the enchiladas, although she was very nice. Good atmosphere

I was here with my family of nine celebrating my wife’s birthday. The previous times that we came was okay, however this time the food was cold and my mothers food came out about 15 minutes after our meals came out. We also order “micheladas” a Mexican style beer drink, it was poorly made. Over all we felt that for the price the quality was lacking and the bar service was not trained. We were also told that some side dishes were served cold (because we asked), again, went my mothers dish finally came out the side dish was hot. This made the food inconsistent and showed the staffs lack of knowledge in there menu.

I came in to meet some friends. The bartenders looked at us numerous times, but decided we weren't worth their effort. So no drink 10+ min. Eventually, the owner noticed and instructed the bar tender to serve us. He gave me the sloppiest, most disgusting chamoy margarita. Amidst this, our party of 6 has been waiting to sit. They give us a table and proceed to ignore our entire table for 30 mins. We had to leave. Even after 30 mins and asking for a waitress, we were completely ignored. 6 people. Seated in the middle of a restaurant. Absolutely PATHETIC At least learn how a restaurant operates before you open a restaurant. Everything you do is nasty and sub par

Ordered Nachos with nothing meat wise on them and clarified that + asked for no jalapeño peppers and after waiting 20-25 mins got given chicken nachos with jalapenos peppers to go and since it was dark out I ended up eating about half of them before noticing and I’m vegetarian. Bad service and the food was very small portions for the price

NEVER AGAIN! Last night I ate here and the service was terrible. Vegetarian options are extremely limited - with a choice being over salted grasshoppers. But what really influenced my decision to never return was watching the waitress spill an entire glass of sangria on a customer, then seeing her catch an attitude with the customer like it was her fault. The waitress was nasty when I asked questions about side dishes. The food is way too salty, the prices are high, and the service is not friendly. Stay home and cook!

Second time visiting this establishment. First time was shortly after they opened and my family and I chalked up the experience to the staff and cooks working out the kinks. However, not much has changed after this recent visit. Chips were cold and somewhat stale and food took approximately 40 minutes to get two taco dishes and a kids menu item — restaurant was nearly empty. Food lacked flavor and server did not return to check on refills for drinks. Also, table behind us took a few bites of their dishes and left. We live in the village and would like to see this place do well, but a good manager is needed to ensure customer service and food is of high quality.

Writing a bad review because they are dishonest. I had a small tortilla soup and bought a margarita for me and a friend- the soup and margarita were $36.72. I tipped $7, which is 20%- a fine tip as this was bar service for a 40 minute stay. I just reviewed my credit card statement and see the server gave herself an extra $10- instead of the bill being $43.72, I was charged $53.72. (I always write the tip I gave and total on my copy of the receipt). I guess waitress Sharai felt she deserved a $17 tip on a drink and soup. Be warned they are dishonest. I have disputed the extra $10 with my bank, tried to call the restaurant but can't seem to get through. Make sure you check your credit card statement if you eat with them.

We ordered a vegetarian torta, which in the past has consistently come as a chile relleno torta. We noticed the carnitas torta is listed at $15, so we were surprised to find that our vegetarian torta—after a short 7-minute ride home—cost $24 and arrived as a soggy, greasy mess that was completely inedible. It is unacceptable to charge a $10 premium for a sandwich with no meat, minimal vegetables, and no real substance. It’s hard to understand how something in that condition was allowed to leave the kitchen, let alone be priced at $24. To make matters worse, the automatic tip brought our total for just two sandwiches to nearly $63. This entire experience was incredibly disappointing.
