Opinions de Red Fern Rochester
I’ve eaten here more times than I can count. The food is always very good. The service is great as well. The food doesn’t take long to prepare and the staff are super friendly. I even ordered a delivery birthday Brownie for a friend and they wrote Happy Birthday on the to-go box! Red Fern is the best.
The place is fantastic nice and cozy on the inside. Service was great people were wonderful. The food was incredible vegans and none vegans alike loved the food. We ate everything on the plate. Mac and cheese is wonderful creamy and rich. Salads are fantastic one with a light vinegrette and the other had sundried tomatoes. We had a fantastic sandwich. And to top it off we were so full we took dessert to go and wow. The peanut butter crisp fantastic. The lemon ginger bar gone. The cookie was great just a little dry. We will be back wish they would deliver to Annapolis. My 17 year old is leaning towards RIT so she can eat here on a regular bases.
Vegan restaurant (with meat imitations) which offers a take on the Rochester-original “Garbage Plate” with an alternative, the “Compost Plate” which I very much enjoyed. They have other less bizarre options as well if you’re not in the mood for an odd assortment of temperatures and flavors in one dish.
This place is WONDERFUL! We have become “regulars” during our two week stay in Rochester. We have LOVED every single thing we have ordered and we haven’t even tried a dessert yet. People seem to order a lot of desserts at the counter and take them home—we are always way too full after our meal to even think about it. The service is wonderful—the waiter recognizes us now and he is warm, attentive, and genuine. He is working his tail off but never fails to pay attention to the details. I recommend sitting outside because it’s a great corner for people watching. Back to the food. We have ordered the following: Bahn Mi Special(5 stars), Rainbow Salad(5+ stars) with an added Lentil Burger(5+ and massive)for protein, Burrito Bowl special(5+), Mac and cheese(5), Nacho special(5+ amazing) shared, watermarking/strawberry/lime spritzer(5+), and “The Swamp” green juice drink(5). The prices are incredibly reasonable. I just don’t think you can go wrong here with anything. It’s our favorite place in Rochester!!
The only mark against this place is that parking can sometimes be difficult. Otherwise, I have no notes. I used to eat an entirely plant-based diet. Now I eat whatever, and this place is still one of my absolute favorite eateries. Don't even get me started on the desserts. OH MY GOD! Try the tahini cups. I'm drooling thinking about it right now.
I spent a short stint in Rochester and this was one of the restaurants I had on my must try list! The service was extremely friendly and welcoming. Ambiance was lovely (I sat outside and people watched) the food was outstanding. I tried the low dough wrap with tempeh - it was very well balanced, flavorful & filling. 10/10 recommend even if you’re not vegan!
Love this place! I’m a vegetarian, and my spouse is vegetarian and has a gluten allergy, and the Red Fern was able to accommodate with no issue whatsoever. We even had our choice of bakery items to choose from, which is practically unheard of. Only downfall is the staircase to enter, so it’s not particularly accessible, but they do have plenty of outdoor seating on the ground level.
First time here, food was delicious even as someone who's not vegan. We'll be back!
I was visiting from out of town and was very happy to find this place! The food is excellent, and the atmosphere welcoming. I felt comfortable hanging out by myself. The price was very reasonable. Even if you are not vegan, still 100% recommend.
Forever grateful for the amazing vegan options you offer and your friendly staff provides always a pleasant experience
One of the only vegan places in town and it does not dissapoint. Variety of sandwiches, dishes and desserts to choose from. Seating is also tavailable at a bar. The portions and pricing are ok. Staff are attentive and friendly. Do note that it can take a while to prepare your food when it is busy.
If I lived in Rochacha this would be my new favorite restaurant and it wouldn't even be close. It's in the top 3 best vegan restaurants I've ever been to, and I've been to a few! We'll be back next time we're in town!
Excellent food and friendly staff. You will have a great meal whether you are vegan or not. If you are vegan you won't have to worry about finding what is safe to eat because on this menu you can eat it all. It's refreshing to have so many choices. Save room for dessert. You'll thank me later.
awesome vegan and allergy-haver friendly place to stop for a smoothie or a sweet treat, or have a full sit down meal !
When I say 5 star, you say rating! 5 STAR..rating!! Phenomenal experience for my first All Vegan menu. Outside seating was money. The service was exceptional. As authentic as you're gonna get (I'm a rookie but I know authenticity when I see it). First off, the place is dope. Located right on the corner, reppin a huge rainbow flag. This place embraces who they are and I'm here for it..at least for my 1st Rochester visit. Food was delicious. I had my first Vegan Quesadilla and I'm was more than impressed. Cheddar, Vegan sausage, kale, fermented garlic and pickled red pepper all worked so dam perfectly together. The cheddar was oozing with deliciousness and had me wondering, "should I start eating Vegan More?" The answer is yes. Yes you should J. And don't even get me started on the lemon aioli for the dip game!! My side salad was green and leafy and great with just the right amount of balsamic? dressing on it. My fiancee enjoyed a delicious cold zoodlei pesto salad (the PZL)..i know it was delicious cuz I ate some like a boss. Our friends enjoyed the steak bomb sandwich (didn't try but the bread looked out of this world and he said it was great) and the lentil burger (another fine report). I have entered the realm of Vegan and I ain't goin back! I'll be exploring my options when I go out to eat in NYC. Oh and the drinks were amazing, light and refreshing. More blessings on blessings.
Edit: The owner contacted me and they were extremely professional and understanding and everything was resolved. We will be back soon! Our visit today had multiple issues but I’m actually only upset about one thing- our server knew we were celiac because we said it multiple times and we were getting 2 cake pieces and 2 cookies to go because we already weren’t having a very good experience and when he handed them to us he gave us a completely different kind of cake that was not gluten free and when I mentioned it to him he acted super annoyed and took our boxes back then came back with the correct cake and my sister asked if the prices were the same because she paid already and he literally lied and said yes so I went to the counter and pointed out the cakes he charged us for were $8 each and the ones we actually got were $5 each and when I said something he acted extremely annoyed like it was our fault. It was super weird and uncomfortable. After having gone here for over 10 years we will not go back which sucks because it was one of the first good gluten free places we went but they clearly do not take the allergy seriously
I dont easily give out 5 star rating and honestly it wasn't until eating my dessert that I paused to consider just how good the food was and that there wasn't anything I would want better! The Food was soooo good. Okay the sweet Potatoes was cold that I didn't like. But he brought out both my orders together and I order them at different times.
The Red Fern is everything wrapped up in a perfect little package. The food is amazing, the customer service is just as amazing and you can sit outside to enjoy a delicious meal. There's just such a positive vibe at this place they really make sure you have a positive experience. OH! Make sure you try the deserts!! Everything from cheese cake to my favorite, TAHINI CUPS!! Absolutely delicious 🤤 Prices are more than reasonable. Parking is not bad, mostly street parking but ,that just gives you a little time to enjoy the area. Keep up the excellent work Red Fern!
I had the PHENOMENAL Low Dough Burrito! Substituted tempeh for lentil, which gave me that hearty, meaty filling I’d craved (but without the meat, per usual 😉). Comes with peppers & onions, coconut brown rice, spicy sour cream in a wheat wrap, all 100% vegan — and you can modify if you have Gluten or even soy sensitivities. By the way, the spicy sour cream was not that spicy at all, just in case those that enjoy a little kick are reading. The wrap comes nut-free and you can make it soy free if desired. The brownie was heavenly; Red Fern makes them so moist, which isn’t always guaranteed when looking for vegan pastries! Can’t wait for my next meal.
Incredible restaurant that we LOVE to visit! Everything is vegan and they do an EXCELLENT job of labeling allergies and offering a variety to accommodate any allergy or restriction. We got our wedding cake and appetizers here and they were LOVELY! The cake was absolutely gorgeous and went above and beyond the inspo pics. I’ll edit to add a better picture when it gets to us!
Awesome Vegan and Gluten free menu! Desserts were also fantastic! Nice place and the staff was great! We will be back for sure!
I am from a rural mountain town and to visit the city and get to order online with the friendliest and sweetest customer service was truly so exciting for me! These donuts were one of the main highlights of my visit and I will absolutely be back every time I’m downstate for more! Delicious- brought tears to my eyes to be able to eat donuts for the first time in years since my celiac diagnosis! Thank you so very much you talented, lovely, creative people!
I went to The Red Fern Today and I was very impressed on how the owner took the time and sat with me to help me figure out a meal I could eat with my temporary food restrictions. Also they have separate menus for people who have different food restrictions as well. I have never been to a restaurant that had this before .... I was super impressed!!! they treated me very well and the service was very good. Everyone there was super nice and very helpful. if I could give this place a rating it would be much higher than 5 stars. :)
Oh my! The food here is delicious! It is a bit difficult to find parking as it seems to be near a college or at least college housing, however the food made up for it 100%! They have an array of desserts and sandwiches, salads, a soup of the day, etc. The wait staff is friendly. There isn't a whole lot of seating, but I think it was just right. The inside looks cool. You can call ahead and order (their menu is online) and pickup if you want to. Completely vegan! Amazing and yummy!!
BFFs at Brunch! We all ordered the same meal: the tofu egg sandwich. It's described on the menu as: tofu 'egg' patty, scallion cream cheese, roasted tomatoes, balsamic field greens on focaccia; and it sells for $9.75 as described, or you may make some changes to the recipe with an upcharge. My upcharge was the sweet potatoe salad: yum! The sandwich was a taste treat, and light but filling. Having enjoyed my own smoothies all summer, I also opted for the classic peanut butter banana smoothie. It was good. The waitstaff are super friendly! By the way, get there early; parking can be a challenge (many people walk there as it's a popular neighborhood eatery), and there was a steady stream of customers attesting to the loyalty this brand has earned for its quality and conscientious attention to detail.
My best friend loves and raves about The Red Fern and she finally brought me there, and I can see why! This restaurant is tucked away in what feels like a funky, cozy den—reservations are typically recommended but the owner squeezed us in. Many of the dishes are reinspired comfort foods with an eclectic vegan twist. SO much emphasis on spices, texture, and flavors, which is really important to have an excellent vegan dish. We’re big fans of the garbage plate (which you can customize) and vegan nachos that came with Mac and cheese on top. I ordered the special that night which was a buffalo cauliflower bowl with chickpeas and puréed celeriac—I only wished there was more! Really looking forward to coming back whenever I’m in Rochester.
The Red Fern vegan fare beats the taste of 90% of any other restaurant you've been to. It beats on texture, looks, and smells. We had four people, four different meals, all were great. Check out the Steak Bomb, but I had the Warrior Wrap. Potatoes were oh so good, asparagus was awesome, grilled perfectly. Again, go there. I'm a meat eater, and I was completely satisfied.
Excellent food and options! Everything is vegan and there are a ton of gluten free options. I tried a lot of desserts and they were all good. They have done in and take out options. Seating is limited so make sure you make a reservation! The staff are very nice and helpful. The wait wasn’t too long, either.
Red Fern is one of my FAVORITES in Rochester! 🫶 Their food and service is top notch and I love the fact that they have so many options to cover a wide range of dietary restrictions. Last night I got one of their specials - which was a pizza with pickled red onion, celery, Brussels sprouts, and coconut bacon covered with buffalo sauce and ranch. 🍕 It was out-of-this-world delicious! 😋 Highly recommend Red Fern - 10/10 always! 😃
All the YES. Breakfast pizza, absolutely! Stopped in earlier today to pick up cookies for customers and ended up ordering the breakfast pizza and beet juice for myself. Obscenely delicious for someone who loves savory breakfast foods. I would go on and on about it but just go and thank me later. 💚🌿 Breakfast pizza needs to be a nationally recognized food item.
THIS PLACE GIVES VEGAN FOOD 10 THUMBS UP. We had such a wonderful experience, mid-COVID, and were very happy to see this place reopened. Got a “compost plate” (a vegan twist on the Rochester garbage plate) and promised myself I would never eat another garbage plate ever AGAIN. Worth every cent. Very affordable and a delightful crew to match. Very happy and would highly recommend desserts!
Loved this quirky spot. Great decor and vibe. I loved the mismatching plates. I am not vegan, but the food was amazing. The quality is really good and felt like I was eating a home cooked meal.
They were busy and it seemed hectic... but the treated us very kindly and gave us great service. Food was excellent. I am thinking even though i am over an hour to get there from where I live- I would consider going back to the town to do something else just to then end up there again. My family and I loved it.
Man where do I start? In case if you’re wondering how their food is, IT AMAZING!!!! Hands down!!! This place gets a 5 out of 5!! If it was a 10-star rating, I’ll give it a 10…so whoever is reading my review, this place will get you approval. You will (ALWAYS) come back.
Extremely friendly and accommodating. My Fiancé has Celiac which can make it really difficult to eat out. The Red Fern knew exactly how to handle it and they have a separate kitchen prep station. On top of that, the food was spectacular! We will be making a point to eat here whenever we visit!
I'm not even vegan, but I love coming to the Red Fern for dinner. A great restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, the staff is always understanding and makes sure to take care of my allergen concerns. And the deserts here are absolutely great even if I always have to get them to go because I'm full from dinner!
We love Red Fern!! First time reviewing, but we’ve been several times. I am vegan and totally appreciate a fully vegan restaurant: no tricky navigating or customizing dishes. We live 1.5 hrs away and make a point to visit RF when we go to a show in Roch. And the DESSERTS!!! A vegan’s dream restaurant. Cozy and quaint and they update their FB page all the time! Well done, y’all!!!
I love The Red Fern and make a point to eat here every time I visit Rochester. The menu offers a wide variety of both familiar and creative dishes, the food is fresh, delicious and healthy. I'm not big on desserts but there's usually a steady stream of customers dropping in just to buy cookies & baked goods to go. Whether it's busy or not, the staff are friendly and make you feel welcomed.
Amazing vegan food. We love the strawberry fields salad 🍓, the fruit and cheez platter 🧀, the quesadilla, and all the delicious desserts. 🧁 So far we tried the maple tahini cups 🍁, the mango 🥭 rhubarb cake, the chocolate walnut blondie, and the lemon 🍋 blondie. Everything was delicious and the service was excellent!
This restaurant was great! We were seated immediately. Our server, E, was friendly and attentive, even remembered all our orders without writing anything down! The food was delicious, came out quickly and the portions were generous enough that we all had leftovers. I wish we lived closer to make this a regular restaurant, but for now it'll definitely be a stop when we're driving through Rochester.
This is a great restaurant. That just so happens to be vegan. I am a known non-vegan but the flavors and textures are definitely there and you cannot tell. Happy to support a cute place with good food at an affordable cost, guilt free. We had their pizza special which tasted exactly like cheese and salami. The Buddha bowl had sautéed kale and it did not taste like grass or straight iron. They give you good portions and you will not have any sluggish feeling after. Make a reservation if you can because they are definitely busy for a reason. It’s a park ave staple.
We went to the Red Fern on a Thursday for lunch and were seated quickly on the patio. It was a lovely spot to sit and watch the people go by. This restaurant deserves all the good reviews. It's not just good for a vegan restaurant, it's just plain good! The menu was super diverse with lots of options for all preferences. I had the special which was a mexican rice bowl and our other guest had the chicken caesar wrap with sesame sticks. Both meals were outstanding. Delicious, ample portions and very fresh and flavourful. Our server was pleasant, timed his visits well and looked after us perfectly. I would definitely go back ... loved it.
This place is amazing! As a newly vegan,, I'm missing the flavor and seasonings of what I ate for so many years, I'm so happy to have found Red Fern! The taste of their food is delicious I had a "Compost Plate" Alkaline drink, cheese and fruit tray & my daughter had a Buhdda Bowl! We were not disappointed at all.
The place was a bit small but very cute and “hipster” vibe. The food was beyond amazing. Unlike anything I’ve tasted. Pretty much 100% of the menu could be made gluten free. I tried there GBLT with gluten free bread and sweet potato. Oooo, I also had their gay sugar cookie and chicken salad! The cookie was super , (maybe even too), sugary, but yummy :). The salad was HUGE , $10 and worth everything 😍 the “chicken “ was 100% GF and super flavorful. The sweet potato was cold but very flavorful mush, (kinda like mashed sweet potato), so keep that in mind if you were hoping for fries!!
We ordered food to go. The harvest salad, lowdough burrito, autumn leaves salad and oatmeal ginger cookies. Everything was amazing, especially the cookies. The waitress/ cashier was friendly and helpful with menu items. Love this place. Definitely are go to for vegan meals. I ordered more cookies to take back to Los Angeles.
100% vegan place. The baked goods were the star of the show for me. Absolutely delicious, with the oatmeal cookie taking top marks. They also have a savory menu, but this was a bit disappointing. I had the Mac & cheese with an adder of faux steak. Neither half of that combo was as good as standard supermarket offerings, such as Mac & Chao. I think the steak might have been Gardein tips, but if they were, they could have been cooked a little crisper and seasoned a bit more strongly for better effect. Still ok (though some salt at the table would have really added), just not particularly memorable. But again, be sure to head to the bakery case!
I was pretty surprised to see that there is a vegan restaurant in Rochester, and it definitely met and exceeded my expectations. The interior is small, but they make good use of the space. The entrees were all very delicious, and the desserts were great too. I will definitely make a decent effort to come back here if I’m in the area again
I'm not vegan but went with friends last night and was able to get reservations short notice. Food was amazing, my friends from out of town were so happy with the large selection for a vegan restaurant and me a non-vegan was really impressed with how great everything tasted. Their compost plate is now in my top 5 for Rochester plates and their vegan Mac and cheese nachos were fantastic. Fair prices all around and their desserts are wonderful. Would definitely recommend even for non vegans. Definitely call for a reservation on weekends, probably won't be as lucky as I was to get last minute on a Friday.
The best reasonably priced vegan restaurant. $50 gets you a main dish, a couple of drinks, and a killer desert including tax and tip. For $19 including tax and tip you can still be really satisfied.

Thank you so much for the food & services. Red Ferns food and desserts are great but I had to mention this unpleasant experience that happened twice in a row. Almond cherry chocolate: energy ball This is the second time in a week I & my husband once ordered and other time picked up these balls, there is a very weird smell and taste that’s coming, I feel the nuts put in here are eliminating a Flavour & odor which is very unpleasant. I ordered this yesterday 03/16/24. I could not reach out to them immediately as we ate this later and by the time we inform Red fern they were closed and they remain closed until Monday. I will be there on Tuesday with the energy balls. Kindly Please check the balls and then serve.
My friends tricked me into coming here because I didn't know it was vegan. But oh well, I can be vegan for one meal. The food was good, tasty. I had the lentil burger. The only problem I had was that, since it is vegan but the names on the menu still say things like "steak" and "mozzarella", I asked the waitress what is the mozzarella made of, since it's not dairy. She had no idea, she just knew the name of the brand. I would recommend just knowing those small details that may be important .
For a person who thoroughly enjoy meat and everything about it, I can fairly say I am very fond of this place. The staff was extremely nice and the food was extremely fresh. I can really taste it was made with effort and love. My favorite thing that I ordered was the Strawberry Alarm Clock (the orange drink). My companion and I ordered the Quesadillas (added mushrooms) and the out the menu special which so happened to be a delicious flatbread. In addition, I had the pleasure to try the chocolate Oreo mint cake and the coconut ice cream peach dessert. YUM! I could see myself returning here especially since it provides such a lovely atmosphere. SIDENOTE: you should try the Ginger Citrus Cider
My first visit and I would definitely return! My only real complaint is for the "composte plate". It needs fewer greens and more of the tofu and other yummy stuff. Looking forward to my next visit!
I was really impressed with the look and feel of this restaurant. It has a super old vibe and I loved it. It’s in a really awesome spot near Park Avenue so lots of other places to walk grab coffee and desserts if you would like. I’m not a vegan, but I was impressed with the menu Options. Really enjoyed the food we got. If you are looking for “normal menu options“ but need them to be vegan this is an excellent place to try I would definitely come back with a vegan friend.
Let me start off by saying that the service was excellent, and everyone was so attentive and sweet. The food itself was just ok, a little bit hit or miss. The chicken bacon ranch salad was amazing - Mac and cheese would be a skip for me if I came back. We tried a few deserts and they were also so so, brownie was very good, cookie was a little hard and not super flavorful. I would recommend trying specials or asking the staff what they like to try some new things.

Food is good but pricey; staff was nice at first but got a bit flustered when it got busy; tried to stop at front display case on way out to get a desert, made eye contact with 3 different staff and was not even acknowledged so left and went to Get Caked 5 mins away to get some great vegan baked goods.
The place is small but clean & tidy. The menu is vegan and varied. Service left me a little disappointed. The wait time was way too long even for getting some ice. It was clear that the servers are not trained /experienced. However, so far this is the only purely vegan place around this area as of August 2018.
I ordered vegan nachos with jalapenos, Buffalo Tempeh and the cheese burger pizza. The nachos were delicious 😍 I think it was walnut meat and tempeh, noodles, zucchini and the cheese was actually stretchy like dairy cheese. The cheese burger pizza was as terrible as it sounds. Cheese burgers should stay cheese burgers and pizzas should stay pizzas 😣. Didn't get a chance to try the deserts or any drinks. 3/5, very cozy atmosphere. . . But Wouldn't say it was warm and welcoming. Probably will go back for cookies but not to dine in, too cramped for me.
Food was ok, too much vegan cheese. Service was fast. ambience was loud
It's all about the food, ordered takeout when visiting family in Rochester. The Compost plate and the lentil loaf for my wife. The online ordering system was very good but i didn't get an update that the order was being prepared well ahead of the time estimate that was given. Resulted in the order being lukewarm by the time I brought it back. In addition the flavors didn't work, it may have been bad menu choices on our part, but neither of us liked our dish. On a positive note portions where very generous/huge and the staff I interacted was friendly. The restaurant was attractive when I did pickup the order in a great neighborhood which gave it initially high points for atmosphere. Unfortunately the interior and windows were plastered with political statements which detracts from the atmosphere. When I go out just want to enjoy a meal and escape politics, even if I agree with the causes, especially for a quiet date night.
Normally, the service is great. Tonight, I ordered from the app. I came in when I got the text that my food was ready. I waited for about a minute (not long) for the woman whose back was to me turned around. She never looked back. I said, "Excuse me." Twice! She did not turn around. I figured she did not hear me. There were people eating, so yelling never makes sense. I walked over to her to get her attention. (Note: no one was at the counter!!) She snapped at me with "What did I want! I am on the phone!" Wow! I told her I got the text that my food was ready. She called someone from the back to get my food. There is no excuse for rudeness in this business. I've been coming for years! I may need to rethink.
Food was way too salty. Customer service was terrible. The front attendant did not greet me, never smiled, and questioned whether I needed a bag while holding two plates. The interaction felt unnecessary and disrespectful. I ordered the seitan steak plate and a seitan sandwich with a side of mac salad. The noodles were hard.
I'm not really against vegetarian food, but I don't really eat much for vegetarian food. I probably could have enjoyed the meal more if there was the option to use butter and honey. Also why the heck do you try to disguise food to taste more like meat if you don't eat meat.
My food tasted like lined paper. Yes, like spiral bound lined paper. Staff was friendly and attentive
I placed my order to go. Used the restroom. 1. The carpet in the hallway should have told me to CANCEL MY ORDER !!! Dingggggyyy The food lacked favor & imagination. I’m grateful that I didn’t get food poisoning or diahrhea. I love vegan food but this fell short. Went hear because of the 4.7 reviews. I don’t know who’s voting. The lentil burger, was like a warm mushy cow patty, slopped onto 2 thick pieces of ciabatta. The greens were good. My Buddha bowl was a thumbs down. The cookie was tasty!! Perhaps this place should only be a coffee shop.
Great service and atmosphere but food did not taste good. I’m personally not vegan but wanted to give this place a try after watching Derek Sarno vids. I got the steak and potatoes and the kale was sauced in a very sour and bitter sauce, the steak was really gross. I couldn’t finish my food and gtfo. “1/5”- MN. I’m sure the food is as good as it gets for vegans, but man thats a dystopian world if the food ends up being like this in the post-apocalyptic vegan future.
3 words bland burnt rude I wish my phone wasn't dead because I wanted to take pics to show yall smh If I go to a vegan restaurant I am obviously aware the items are vegan I felt because I have brown skin the server wanted to let me know in case I forgot where I decided to spend my money. I won't be back. Black Lives Matter signs in windows are a cover up smh bc the non brown skin folks seated next to me said it was their first time and the server welcomed with open arms and never reminded them it was a vegan menu My friend told me she had a similar experience when she went and I should've listened because I left there dissatisfied, offended, and wasted money on leftovers my dog refused to eat! Steak bomb seitan and bread were dry and tasted burnt
