Opinions de Frontier Café Yucca Valley
If you’re looking for that authentic high desert feel, this is it. The vibe is great, the crowd is chill, and the service is genuinely warm. Had a killer tuna melt and some excellent black coffee today. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like a local, even if it’s your first time. Highly recommend.
We tried both the regular egg sandwich (with arugula and tomato) and the veggie sausage egg sandwich and loved them both. Maybe the sausage had a slight edge since their veggie sausage is SO good. Wait times were significantly longer on Saturday morning than on Friday or Monday. We'd love to return!
Fantastic food! Service was great, especially the very nice cashier with purple hair. I loved that I was able to ask questions about ingredients and they had that info right at the register. It helps SO MUCH when you have food restrictions. The food was fresh and tasty. Wonderful food and vibe. Thanks for a great meal!
Yummy and healthy food options made with quality ingredients. The sandwhiches are well served and quite filling. They don't skimp on the protein servings. They also have a lot of drink choices and they're more than happy to adjust to your preferences. I ordered the Golden Milk with oatmilk on my last visit and the cashier suggested I add a shot of Espresso and substitute the honey for agave (i.e. Claudia's Way). It was soooo good. It'll be my go to drink when I stop by in the future.
Frontier Café is a great local spot with a warm, welcoming atmosphere. The food was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care, and the portions were very satisfying. Service was friendly and attentive, making the whole experience relaxed and enjoyable. It’s the kind of place that feels authentic and comfortable — perfect for breakfast or a casual meal when you’re in the area. Definitely worth stopping by if you’re around Yucca Valley!
Busy but spacious spot with filling food (4/5 Green Stars) I arrived at what was probably close to peak time – around 10 AM on Sunday. The line was quite long and the food took a good while to arrive. I would have been wondering if it was forgotten except that I could see that everyone’s food was taking around 15 mins to come out. I didn’t mind – I had my coffee and excellent people-watching entertainment. The clientele ranges from locals in cowboy gear, rainbow gear, or tats and baseball hats, to tourists, UCLA hotties in faux fur, and geeks on laptops (that’s me). The contrast is pretty funny. I appreciated that the server at the counter took a minute to explain that they only use veggie sausage in their sandwiches so there’s no chance of a mix-up. My breakfast sandwich (veggie sausage, egg, and cheddar) was very filling and the side of veggie bacon (seitan) was tasty but salty. (Pro-tip: take some veggie bacon for your hike as salty snacks are good to replenish your electrolytes). The coffee was just okay – I just had a drip and it seemed over-roasted to me (I’ve heard others say this about beans from Joshua Tree Coffee). A medium/light toast would be better, in my opinion. Prices are reasonable and there’s a nice mix of cool inside seating and sun or shade outside. Props to the friendly staff. I’m giving the Frontier Café 4.5 Green Stars for social and environmental impact, based on the following: • A large amount of the menu is suitable for vegans and vegetarians. • It’s actually a genius move to just replace regular sausage with veggie version and make that standard in the breakfast sandwich. It’s an excellent way to show people who might otherwise never try the veggie option, that meat substitutes are pretty good these days. • Cool homemade items like vegan bacon (seitan) and vegan cookies. • Coffee beans are organic – from Joshua Tree Coffee, I believe, since they sell their beans there too. JT coffee is above-average in terms of environmental impact. • Food is served in compostable trays. • I like the little details like fair trade certified sugar and the interesting United Sodas drinks for sale. • Inclusive place that feels welcoming to everyone and, through this, brings people together. • Room for improvement: ditch the beef. It has much larger environmental footprints than other meats.
Loved this quaint little cafe! Recently stopped in with a group of friends (new to the area), and we were all very impressed with the menu options. Prices in California in general are higher than our Midwest norms, and this cafe was no exception- but it was worth every penny. I ordered the grilled cheese (added avocado), a hot peppermint tea, and a couple immunity and vitamin C shots. Laidback, cool atmosphere- overall great experience! Captured one pic of a friend’s egg sandwich (below).
We have stopped by the cafe three different times twice for breakfast and another time to pick up some to go salads. The breakfasts were outstanding. We had avocado toast and two breakfast sandwiches, the classic and the sausage, grilled cheese and a bagel with crewm cheese. We also purchased three sandwiches to go and enjoyed them after we hiked 4 miles at Joshua Tree. Be prepared to wait it might take a little bit of time, but it's well worth the wait. All the food was very fresh.
I just stopped by to get a warm cup of coffee, the place is really nice, charming, very clean, great for hanging out with anyone, and don't worry about bathroom, there are like 3 I guess, very welcoming and friendly people, there was a line but in not time at all it was my turn to order, the girl who took my order is very friendly. I had a pistachio latte, 16 oz for 6 bucks, I really love the flavor, well combine the coffee and pistachio flavors, so creamy. Service is very fast and my latte came up very fast despite the place was packed.I would definitely drive 2.5 hours and try their sandwiches and other lattes . Highly recommend this place to anyone visiting This area whether coming from LA or nearby areas.
Sausage, Egg, and Cheddar: 4/5 This was a great deal. It tasted like a sandwich you could make at home in the best possible way. I really like veggie sausage patties, so brace for it since it’s the main protein. The mayo they use was tasty and did not overpower the sandwich. I loved the very small salad of arugula on the side, a great way to brighten a normally very heavy breakfast. Americano: 4.5/5 Strong, dark, and not acidic. My perfect Americano. If you like something with lots of complexity, especially fruity notes, you may not like this. Tempeh Bacon: 3/5 This was a side order and they give you a good amount! It was very smoky, maybe a little too much liquid smoke, and salty. While I know it is trying to emulate bacon, it wasn’t crispy at all. It was just kind of wet and salty, mot my favorite. It was very tasty crumbling it into the potato salad though, I would recommend doing that. Potato Salad: 3/5 Flavor was decent and very traditional. I’m not a big fan of celery so I was glad this did not have any. The dressing tasted fine, but it was strangely separating/curdled. Also, the potatoes tasted old, you know when they get kind of leathery and shriveled from being in the fridge for too long. Ambiance: Casual. It has a desert hipster kind of vibe. Service: The staff was nice but food came out painfully slow. We waited for almost 20 minutes for a sandwich. Parking: Street parking on a wide street.
The food and coffee are always top tier and never disappoint! The staff are nice and the bathrooms are always clean and there’s 3!! HOWEVER… whilst I do understand that this is a small business and costs are high, and they largely rely on the tourist crowd, over time the prices have simply become inaccessible to the locals. The rich LA and other visiting people of course have the money to spend but this is one of so few wonderful good quality healthy options that now we just can’t really afford :(. I still come in and get the odd coffee however a simple sandwich will cost you around $20. In addition I absolutely hate that all of the cutlery is not only plastic, but also each utensil is in its own individual plastic wrapper which just creates an insane amount of unnecessary waste !!
We went here for breakfast and we were not disappointed. One has to order at the counter and we had the classic egg sandwich ( this was yum), cream cheese bagel, salted caramel iced latte ( this was great) and a regular latte. Service was very quick and there's ample seating indoors and outdoors. The place has some really nice paintings too.
Paid 10.00 for drip coffee and a bagel toasted with almost frozen cream cheese on the side. They could at least put the cheese on so it's warm. The music could be better choreograph to set the vibe. I like the layout and the super small clean toilet. They should find higher quality bagels and croissants for me to comeback..
I really wanted to love this local Joshua Tree coffee shop. It has great local vibes and a broad, yummy-sounding menu, which initially drew us in. Unfortunately, our experience was frustrating due to service issues. After paying over $30 for both food and drinks, our food order was forgotten. We waited a total of 30 minutes from payment to receiving our simple food order (a bagel with cream cheese). When we brought it to their attention they said it would be another five minutes (to cut a bagel?). During this time, no staff member apologized for the oversight or offered any compensation, which was disappointing. If the owners could focus on better order management and improving customer service training of their young staff for unexpected issues…this could significantly elevate the experience for future guests. I hope they take this as constructive feedback to improve, as the potential is clearly there.
