Tip: The robata dishes are highly recommended, but consider grilled or cooked options over rolls. Some reviewers recommend trying the Omakase by Chef Diego.

I used to think I didn't like sushi, but that all changed after I had dinner here one night. The food was so incredible that I went back the very next day for happy hour. Whether it's night or day, the atmosphere is always great. But what really stood out was the bartender who served us—he was so sweet and helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable.
I went to Azuma with a group of friends and the experience was pretty good. We arrived and we didn't have to wait since there was a table available. The service was okay, maybe a little to improve. All the food was excellent, we ordered a series of dishes for the table The Spicy Edamane, Red Devil Roll, Lobster Roll (one of the best), we also tried the Duck Ramen very good, the Chicken Katu delicious and a good option if you don't eat fish Another of my favorites was the Azuma Sushi Combination, the ocean roll okay, the fried calamari good but nothing out of this world, but one of the stars was the Combo Fried Rice, super fresh and delicious. The atmosphere is beautiful, good decoration and I love that you can see the chefs making the sushi, truly one of the best in the city.
I eat here at least once a month. It’s a little more expensive than some of the other Sushi restaurants that I eat at, but in this case, you get what you pay for! For starters, this is the only Sushi restaurants that occasionally has fresh Wasabi! There is a noticeable difference between fresh and the stuff that comes out of the tube. I’m pretty simple when it comes to Sushi, so I tend to focus on freshness. And today everything was super fresh! Today I had a combination Nigiri and Sashimi consisting of Tuna, Salmon, Yellow Tail, Fresh Water Eel (don’t knock it till you try it), and it could not have been better! Try this place sometime! Oh, and this is one of the few Places you can get fresh Uni!!!
This is my first time at Azuma. I will note that my experiences with sushi are typically at AYCE joints or somewhere cheap/affordable like Oishi. The food has been really good. Even though the sushi/fish is more expensive than I’m accustomed to, they have a wide variety of hot and cold appetizers that my friends and I really enjoyed and filled up on. Special shout out for the fried calamari at a mere $8. (This place easily warrants at least two $$s in terms of cost) I wanted to make a special mention to our server Cha-Cha (please excuse the spelling) - she is absolutely incredible with superb service. Very welcoming and revisiting at the perfect cadence, we never wanted for food, drink, or water. If I may be so cheeky, I would recommend her as your server if you do come visit. Atmosphere is super cozy. They have some inspiration from original Japanese architecture that really helps the restaurant stand apart from the plethora of other Houston restaurants. Do you like cocktails? This is a great place to have fun with friends and coworkers over an array of fun cocktails! Well mixed and modestly strong, I will definitely be revisiting this establishment with friends.
First time tried Omakase by Chef Diego for my birthday and it was astonishing! Previously went for sushi rolls and loved it (despite the restaurant being far from my house), but after trying the chef chosen variety of appetizers, sushi and sashimi will be back more often. The dishes we tried were so distinct – fusion of Japanese cuisine with modern touches. Plates were decorated as art creations; taste surprised and satisfied the palate, the textures were marvelously fused. Perfectly combined flavors and highest grade seafood were perfect for celebrating my special occasion, want to return for more. The place may not appear luxury or chic but food definitely is the top quality. It has been open for many years and still provides excellent quality and service (as sushi connoisseur I noticed the trend for quality to do down for many high end sushi restaurants). Definitely will be back and highly recommend as best place for Omakase in Houston.
The service and atmosphere was very good. The crazy Irishman roll was super good! The cooked salmon inside was very juicy, and I didn’t expect it to taste so good. The seafood nabeyaki udon wasn’t as good as expected, and the fish, the shrimp, and the scallop didn’t look very fresh or tender. The katsu don was ok, but there wasn’t enough sauce and the meat wasn’t very crunchy. I didn’t expect the egg to be on the pork. The takoyaki is different from the normal ones, they have a different sauce and no fish flakes. I didn’t like it. Also, the portions were pretty big, we came as three people and we almost didn’t finish. Overall, it is ok.
Overall: a decent place to go for a date night (bc that’s more of the vibes imo) if you’re looking to eat Japanese food. Food: safe options to go for are the ramen bowls (either the house or duck flavor) as they’re both tasty. Skip the chicken katsu dish as it just wasn’t worth it and the sauce was a little to BBQ for my taste. The sushi was also really good but for the portions and price, not really worth it. Price: pricier than I’d like but if if you’re wanting a bang for your buck, go for the bigger plates like ramen as they were $16 each. The sushi was only like 10 pieces and should’ve been priced below $15 imo. Service: we got seated quickly but that’s probs because we came after lunch time ish. Our server was nice and our food came out within reasonable time. Atmosphere: I didn’t like all the dim lighting and dark decor as it gave off a more intimate and reserved vibe. Tables seemed to be also a little too close for my liking
Menu may have been created by a well-trained sushi chef, but the menu is massively asian fusion, nowhere near authentic Japanese. The cuts of Toro were of medium grade, yet, priced as if it was grade 9. In short, lots of sizzle, not much Japanese substance, for top tier prices.
Food was nothing spectacular. Just happen to be local and went for the convenience. I would visit again but the server turned me off. She was rude and unfriendly. She frowned when asked about the types of ingredients as I have allergies to certain ingredients. She seemed agitated so I stopped and ordered something else. I was trying not to be rude in front of my guest but even my friend mentioned how she was rude and unwilling to listen and took off. I spent over $100 for 2 person lunch and found it very distasteful that I spent the money and had to give her tip that she doesn't deserve for such unprofessional behavior. As for the food, I would go back only if I get a different server. I have few friends who had the same service issues which I was told few weeks back and i didn't think much of it. However, now that I too experienced rude and unpleasant services i may have to wait a while until I forget the distasteful encounter. Price and the quality is fairly reasonable like any other sushi restaurants in the area.
📌The restaurant is clean and hygienic, with spacious seating and soft lighting. It is suitable for couples, families, and friends to gather for dinner. 📌Personally, I think the ingredients are average, not as authentic as the sushi in local Japanese restaurants, and the portions of each meal are on the small side, which is a pity. 📌Generally, the quality of the food is good, and the price is on the upper-middle level. If you want to be full, this restaurant may be a little disappointing.
First timer at Azuma. Friday evening dinner. Surprisingly full of young kids, almost every table had 1-2 young kids. Not against kids at all. Decor is dated, bland, COVID features still in place (plexiglass barriers). Service was excellent. Food taste was above average to great. Fried calamari was crunchy but pieces were very small. Adedashi tofu had good taste. Pink Lady roll was excellent. And the fried banana dessert was large enough for 4 shares. We plan to come back for lunch bento box. Prices are reasonable.
I still give 2 star to this restaurant because of the Robata bar, thought the quality has declined so much. Check the photo I updated below: first two photos were took a few days ago, and the last photos were took in August 2015. The first one was the beef tongue Robata. Slices was cut in uneven thickness some were too thick to eat, and also the thick parts were too raw to eat. Compare the beef tongue before they lost the quality in cutting and cooking. The one I ate recently just like a non chewable steak instead of beef tongue. As for the pork belly it was not so disappointed as beef tongue. The fat part in pork belly is fine but the lean meat would definitely stuck between your teeth, they were over cooked. Personally for the Robata, the pork belly was too salty. And the vegts for each Robata items was much less than before. The restaurant seems like renovated recently but I have to say I’m not that happy to eat here vs before. You used to have a good Robata sensei but now the cooking quality has declined so much. After the last try I may delete this restaurant from my Houston’s favorite Japanese restaurants list...
Slow and terrible service. Coming to this sushi spot you might as well just call yourself a loser. If you take anyone on a date here you deserve to be ghosted. Trash establishment.
Subpar sushi - maki rice was watery, yellowtail in maki was ground up, table was sticky and gross, general atmosphere of a chain-type restaurant experience. Staff was nice but definitely not worth it with better options elsewhere..
Noisy. Also, rolls are very well crafted but totally flavorless. Bland! The spicy mayo was like regular mayo out of a jar... and AGAIN everything in the rolls was flavorless, including the shrimp tempura. Good ingredients but not well seasoned and adorned. We were quite disappointed.
A Dangerously Incompetent Experience – Avoid This Place I wish I could rate the food alone, which was admittedly tasty, but the catastrophic service and outright danger we were subjected to completely obliterates any positive aspect of this meal. This was far beyond a simple "off night"; this was a masterclass in negligence and unaccountability. Our experience was defined by one individual: our server, Santo. To call him inattentive would be a generous understatement. He was a menace. His service was painfully slow, but that was the least of our concerns. The critical issue was his complete lack of awareness and care, which directly put my children at risk. In the span of one meal, he nearly spilled scalding hot soup on my young kids and then actually bumped my son with a heavy tray. As a parent, watching a staff member's reckless behavior come so close to seriously injuring your children is absolutely terrifying. When I, understandably upset, addressed this with him, his response was not an apology. It was not concern. It was flippant, dismissive, and defensive. He had the audacity to claim the near-accident was my fault. His demeanor was so erratic and unprofessional that it was alarming. I don't make accusations lightly, but his behavior was so bizarrely irresponsible that it raises serious questions. Hoping for a resolution, we brought this to management. Their response was the final nail in the coffin. They were shockingly lax, dismissive, and failed to treat the situation with the urgency it deserved. Their apathy made it clear that customer safety and satisfaction are not priorities here. They are apparently perfectly comfortable employing staff who endanger children and then blame the parents for it. The food is good, but no meal is worth this level of stress and risk. This establishment has a profound failure in training, oversight, and basic standards of safety. I will never return, and I would strongly caution any family—or anyone who expects to be served by professionals and not hostile hazards—to spend their money and time elsewhere. An appalling, unacceptable experience from start to finish.
