Location: very accessible via public transit .If driving in make sure to check for a parking lot in the area (it a busy area and might not have street parking) Service: Just one sound - WOW .The staff is incredible and looks like they truly enjoy their craft which makes it a delight to watch them work. The team knew it was my friends' birthday and allergies, even had a special birthday menu printed so she could have a memento which I found very thoughtful Ambiance: Very intimate and relaxed, we sat at the counter and enjoyed seeing the team at work. The space is very welcoming Now to the most important part- the FOOD. We had the chef's tasting menu. The starters were light and fresh . The first starter with egg and caviar was so beautiful it was a shame to eat it, and it tasted like a hug. The handrolls were magnificent. Each one had layers of flavors and textures condensed to a single bite. My favorite ones were the Spicy Tuna with a crunch and the Chef's special with sea urchin. The handmade noodle and soup were a very nice savory dish , great on a cold day like today. For dessert there was an assortment of items, my personal favorite was the Coconut sorbet and lemon curd. But all were wonderful, not too sweet and perfect ending to a greateal All and all 10/10 definitely recommend for special occasions
Such an amazing place, perfect for any celebration! They made the night so special for us, we were celebrating a birthday. Highly recommend making reservations and doing counter seating (set menu). Food was beautiful and delicious. Staff was incredible. Thank you for the detailed touches and thoughtfulness! Note: Service was a bit slow in the beginning so don’t arrive starving.
Mari, a charming Korean hand roll restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen, offers an exceptional dining experience with its meticulously crafted tasting menu. Each dish is prepared with care, showcasing the finest ingredients and impeccable execution. The seafood, incredibly fresh, delivers a pure and delicate taste of the ocean. The main course, lobster kalguksu, stands out with its remarkable depth of flavor, making it a true highlight of the meal. The tasting menu concludes with a refreshing two-part dessert, among the best I have ever had in a restaurant. Mari is an outstanding choice for any occasion—highly recommended.
We recently hosted a company dinner at Mari, and the experience exceeded expectations in every respect. From the precision and balance of each dish to the seamless pacing of the service, the evening was executed with remarkable professionalism. The culinary program demonstrated thoughtful composition, refined technique, and an evident respect for ingredients. Every course was well-calibrated in flavor and presentation, reflecting a kitchen operating at a very high level. Service was equally impressive. I was particularly struck by the attentiveness and poise of Assistant Manager Oh, whose hospitality and attention to detail elevated the evening into something truly memorable for our team. An exceptional dining experience from start to finish. Highly recommended.
Very good food. It is inevitable that one might compare it to an omakase although some of the offerings might be more unique. Price wise you could probaby do two omakases for the price of mari. I was not a big fan of the sorbet but the rest of the desert was great. The egg +rice cake appetizer was the standout dish of the evening.
Always found my self walking by this restaurant and it looked so intriguing. Finally decided to try it and had such an amazing experience. Everyone was so friendly. The food was exceptional. Tried a red makgeolli which was new to us and delicious. But who really stole the show was our server, Jin. She was so knowledgeable, warm, personable, fun and enthusiastic. She made sure we had the best evening and we did!! Will definitely be returning to Mari and requesting Jin!
Very special tasting menu! The first course was immediately one of the bests - caviar over an egg cake in mentaiko butter sauce. All 7 hand rolls were layered with flavor and so elegantly plated. Works of art! The noodle + banchan course was a simple contrast to the rolls and had the most perfectly cooked shrimp. Lastly, the desserts were excellent. The service was very gracious, but the pacing a little slow so I’d recommend sitting at the counter to keep the momentum.
We had a great dining experience from food to service at Mari and recommend a visit for people who are interested in a blended experience of traditional and creative takes on Korean cuisine. From a service perspective, they were super accommodating with our time constraints and didn’t make us feel any type of way about not having as much time as what’s recommended. I don’t remember the bartender’s name, but he was super friendly and personable. The food was overall amazing, and in my opinion, punched above its weight class for the price point and star status. The bites played a lot with different textures, the layers of flavors were also very well constructed and thought out. The jjamppong broth was excellent, had a great kick. The banchan wasn’t a standout, but that also wasn’t the main point of the dish.
Another great dinner at Mari last night. Sarah was an excellent guide for our experience. So many excellent courses with complex flavors, it’s difficult to say which ones were our favorites. Akami special was outstanding as well as the scallop, zabuton, and mushroom Mari. We recommend getting the wine pairings. Each one complemented the food. Sarah did a great job describing the wine and how to worked with each course. Mari continues to be one of our favorite spots in NYC and can’t wait to return soon. Thanks again.
Mari is a small open kitchen restaurant where the best seats are at the counter. The service is very accommodating and flexible. The food menu gets you couple of starter dishes (solid opening act), make sure you'll get the extra course - koji marinated tuna with burnt leek sauce; this is a signature and probably the best item on the menu (why is that extra though?). The handroll section that follows is busy and some of the rolls didn't manage to raise to the level of the stars - what's common for all of them is that the level of complexity is there, but few of them felt a bit over-engineered. The main course was something I didn't really understand - individually all bites were good, but it lacked a common thread. If they'd added 4-5 more handrolls and skipped the main, I would have probably been happier. Despite the main course aspect, I'm still giving the whole experience a solid 5 stars as the feeling we got from our visit was overwhelmingly positive.
Amazing. Absolutely perfect night for me and my partners anniversary. They made a menu just for us and the wine pairings. YOOOOOO let me tell you. Best i’ve ever had. Really brought out the flavor on the food. Chefs were lovely, offered to take our picture at the end. Explained all our dishes and pairings thoroughly. Thank you prince as well for making it an unforgettable night ❤️
The food was exceptional. From the first egg and caviar to the very last dessert, not a single dish was not fresh. Not too much rice in each handroll and there was a wide variety: from tuna to Wagyu beef to mushrooms… all were so delicious. The big main dish wasn’t the stand out for me but it was still great pairing fish with sweet potato. The desserts were amazing: some refreshing others mochi donuts and coconut ice cream more rich. Only thing is that they kept rushing us for their next table… I feel like for the price we pay, the least they can do is let us take our time ? I’ve never finished a tasting menu that fast
The food was incredible—perfectly balanced with soft and crunchy, sweet and savory in every bite. Portions were just right, leaving room to enjoy the final dessert. The scallop roll with the tart was my favorite—so many flavors in one! The staff was wonderful and even treated me to a complimentary espresso martini with desert, which was outstanding. I’ll definitely be back next time I’m in New York!
Seated at the chef’s counter, I had the absolute pleasure of watching a team of incredibly skilled chefs work in unison; their technique, precision, and creativity on full display. It felt like watching a beautifully choreographed performance, each dish coming together in real-time before being served as a masterpiece on the plate. Every bite was balanced and thoughtful, blending textures and flavors that melt seamlessly in your mouth. I was even fortunate to try a dish off the menu that the savory chef was testing out. The wait staff was equally phenomenal; attentive, professional, and intuitive. Utensils were replaced between each course and the table was kept spotless, allowing me to stay completely immersed in the experience without distraction. The progression of dishes was perfectly paced. The egg and caviar was a rich, indulgent way to start, followed by the Kingfish Hwe Muchim , a light, refreshing, and bursting with flavor. The watermelon granita added a surprise twist: what looked sweet had an incredible spicy kick that played perfectly on the palate. The salmon, branzino, and mushroom Mari offered savory, earthy depth. When I requested a substitution for the scallop Mari, the chef presented a fluke over corn/seaweed tart with apricot jam which was beautifully balanced, fresh, and innovative. Standout moments included the Toro and caviar- The chef’s special, a luxurious blend of sweet and savory, absolutely a must-try. The spicy tuna Mari was elevated with crispy potatoes and a tangy aioli that perfectly offset the spice. The eel Mari with duck Pâté was bold and satisfying, a unique combination that worked flawlessly. The potato croquette, paired with the Korean pho and its dual infusers (mustard and chili), brought warmth and depth. The brisket Mari over mustard sauce took on new dimensions with a dash of chili, and the garlic broccolini was divine on its own, but transformative when dipped into the pho broth. For dessert, everything was refreshing and inventive. The apricot sorbet, oolong granita, and cherries soaked in a blossom syrup tasted like summer in a spoon; floral, light, and cleansing. The coconut sorbet with Philippine lime curd and zest was tangy and bright, while the motchi with caramel sauce was the warm, decadent finale. It was soft, sweet, and melt-in-your-mouth comforting, the kind of dessert you wish would never end. Mari isn’t just a restaurant, it’s a culinary performance. Every dish is artfully crafted, flavors are deeply layered, and the hospitality is top-tier. A must-visit for anyone looking for a truly elevated dining experience in NYC.
An absolute feast for my taste buds, this meal was and what a scrumptious one at that too! Every morsel of food I had as part of the omakase was truly amazing. It was elevated Korean Japanese flavours in a playful mix which made you feel, think and analyze, how are these two flavours working so well together! The attention to details from the start to the finish with everything be it the chefs, the amazing waiting staff and host n hostess. This place is truly unique and worth a visit.
Ironically, I stumbled upon this place which is funny now looking back (it totally deserves its reputation). Mari is of course amazing, the experience is wonderful, the food is superb, and the staff is incredibly friendly. I love Korean food, and Mari does a great job of presenting classic Korean flavors in a unique and engaging way. Everything was delicious, and I recommend sitting at the counter, watching the chefs work is a fantastic time. Highlight of the night was basically every hand roll (I can’t pick one, so please don’t make me choose). The lobster main was phenomenal and the portion amount was perfect. Will definitely be back when the menu shifts (it typically does)!
A little shop that does a Korean-inspired fusion tasting menu, focused on seafood and almost mini-hand rolls of fish an other tasty bites. A lot of the descriptions I could barely hear (the music/background was a little noisy), and anything spicy had a kick, but overall an interesting experience watching them prep in front of you and tasting some pretty unusual combinations. I'm not 100% sure I would be satisfied at the end, but they had a couple of desserts to top off what was a very filling night.
Highlights of the meal: egg and caviar, zabuton mari, salmon caviar mari, and mochi donuts. Overall, Mari was mediocre. Some of the dishes worked well with the unique fusion of flavors but most of them did not. The Dover sole was our least favorite dish. The flavors just didn’t work together. And the banchan that came with it were disappointing.
The service is extremely good but unfortunately, the food was underwhelming and failed to justify the tasting menu price point. I was genuinely surprised that this meal warranted a star. The concept is Korean hand-roll omakase Many of the dishes lacked the depth of flavor, often felt like a flurry of ingredients without a cohesive vision, and some were frankly confused. The quality simply does not match the cost. It felt like paying a premium for a concept rather than for genuinely exceptional ingredients Overall, nice presentation of the food but the taste simply just lagging behind
I recently dined at Mari, and while the food was genuinely good, my experience was marred by an unfortunate situation involving the service. I encountered an embarrassing moment when the server ( the server wears black frame optical glasses) asked to check my phone to verify whether or not I had received white truffle. This was completely uncalled for, and I felt humiliated. I don’t know if the mistake was on the server's part or the chef's, but it certainly shouldn’t have fallen on me to prove my honesty. Additionally, the server failed to communicate what happened with my white truffle until I asked him again, and that was after I had already finished my dessert! It's frustrating when you're dining out and expect basic courtesy and professionalism, which was sadly lacking during my visit. I won’t be returning to this restaurant.
